A toddler proof Christmas tree

With the ice outside and living on a bit of a hill I did not feel much like venturing outside today.  Instead the girls and I started to make some Christmas decorations.  The first item on our list came as a request from my 2 year old.  When I asked her what she wanted to do she replied 'make a snowman' bit tricky without snow but I came up with a plan.

I took two balloons and tied them together, after blowing them up.  We then proceeded to paper mache the two balloons.  To make the paste I simply put child friendly glue into warm water and mixed together.  Once the balloons were completely covered, I tied string around them to hold the two together, as if to create two snowballs.  We then covered the balloons and string in paper and left to dry.

The snowman is currently drying and tomorrow we will finish him, by painting and making his hat and scarf.  I am not worried about the join between the two balloons as this will be hidden behind his scarf.  I would say that it is easier to coat the balloon in paste and stick the paper to the balloon than to get the paper wet and stick to balloon.  My daughter really enjoyed the sticky feel of the paper mache and had fun making a snowman.  I shall up date you on the progress.

Our next item for today was the Christmas tree.  I have a very active 2 year old and a 7 month old that since working out how to crawl is into everything and opens everything.  The girls are very lucky to have a 'play room' and I wanted a Christmas tree to go in it for them.  So we set about making a toddler proof Christmas tree.

making a tree

My daughter loves hand and foot painting so we used her hands to make the tree shape and her foot for the trunk of the tree.  The tree starts with one hand print at the top and then each subsequent line has an extra hand print.  I painted a star on the top of tree and my daughter then began sticking some pom poms on it for baubles.  She even stuck some glitter on to look like tinsel.

My youngest not wanting to miss out the fun also joined in and made her very own tree, which my eldest kindly decorated for her.

The trees are now hung up on the walls in the play room, meaning I can finally say I have put the tree up.  Slightly better than this is the fact I now have a toddler proof Christmas tree for the girls to enjoy and we had a lot of fun making them.

This day I love a toddler proof Christmas tree.
