This day I love.......

2012 has been an amazing year for me.  I want to start though with looking back on 2011 from July, helps to explain why 2012 was so great.

July 2011 saw my return to work following a year MAT leave with my eldest daughter.  The next few months saw some changes and incredibly stressful times.  The first in August as we put our house up for sale after finding our dream home closer to our family.  September/October saw my job be made redundant and frantically searching for another.  After several interviews, assessment centres, presentations and role plays I finally secured a job the week before Christmas.  Oh and not forgetting discovering that I would be having a baby.

2012 therefore was a welcome change and a lot less stressful.  I started my new job, although within the same company.  With the accumulation of holiday days plus training courses and meetings I worked a handful of days before MAT leave started.

Our dream house sold, the day before we sold ours.  We had the highest bid in an auction but the vendor would not sell to us so we lost another property we liked.  Then our dream house came back on the market, the original one we saw back in 2011.  We successfully managed to secure it and moved into it when our youngest was 2 weeks old exactly.

We had our first holiday as a family and our youngest had her first Christmas.  Our daughters are growing up so beautifully I cannot wait to watch them develop and see what 2013 brings for us as a family.

I want to wish all my followers a very happy new year and here is to the start of something new.

I have to confess I have never owned a pair of Ugg Boots.  They have always been on my wish list, an item I would love to own but never have.

On Christmas eve I received a really wonderful surprise.  My daughter unwrapped the box and she was so excited.  'Wowee Mummy, are these for me?'  She promptly put them on, whilst still wearing her PJs and started dancing around the house.

Trying on boots

The boots are so lovely and soft and she finds them so comfy to wear.  She would not take them off all day and they did not stop her in anyway from running around, climbing or jumping from things.  I like the inner lining it is lovely and thick and feels incredibly soft.

We were sent a pair of Toddlers Bailey Button boots in Grey to review.  The boots look like the classic Ugg Boot but with a gorgeous addition of a wooden logo button.  They are genuine twin face sheepskin and really are so beautiful.

I often wondered if with the lining so thick if your feet would sweat inside the boot.  I can answer this with a definite no.  When I finally managed to get them off my daughters feet, I explained she could not wear them in the bath, her feet were lovely and warm but not in the least bit sweaty.  This is very reassuring as she does suffer from eczema when her skin sweats.

My daughter really loves her Ugg boots.  They keep her feet lovely and warm.  She is able to be an active two year old in them, running, jumping and climbing in complete comfort.

I often wonder where my girls get their energy from.  Last night my youngest had a terrible night.  I think she is cutting two more teeth, to bring her current total to 8.  I was expecting this morning to be rather a chilled morning but I was completely wrong.

My youngest has had her eye on the stairs for some time.  She often crawls out the playroom to them.  Recently she has been able to pull herself up to standing on them but that was as far as it went.  She today took it one step further, she climbed them.

Well that was it once she figured out she could climb them, every time I put her down she went straight for them to climb back up.  Each time giggling as she went and when she reached the top turned round to smile at me.

The climbing did not stop there.  My eldest was sat on her Trunki toy box so my youngest climbed on to it to sit with her and at my parents house she climbed onto the coffee table to steal some cake.

I think this is where the fun begins.

I love how my girls both know their own mind.  They know what they want and how to get it.  I love most of all how they think and work things out.  My eldest has just discovered the word why? or more to the point its use.  Following conversation in the car:

Daughter : 'What's that Mummy?'
Me : 'The Sun darling'
Daughter : 'No Mummy its the Moon'
Me : 'No Darling the moon is at night time and its daytime now'
Daughter : 'Why?'
Me : 'Because its not nighttime'
Daughter : 'Why?'

This conversation proceeded for a good 30 mins.  She has also learnt the word because and its use particularly if I ask her 'Why?'.  I love how at 2 she has her own mind and opinions and knows how to express them.

My youngest is also developing her own mind.  She has never liked the car, it doesn't matter which car, whose driving or what car seat.  She is happy to sit in the car seat outside the car but not in the car.  Today she decided to make her self into a very stiff star shape so as to make it near impossible to get her in the seat.

During our trip round the supermarket she decided to 'sample' all my food items.  I got a bit worried when I kept seeing the same person with a brush, then realised she was a member of staff following us round clearing up the mess my youngest was leaving behind, I paid for everything she sampled.

Upon our return home my youngest decided to empty all the toys out of all the toy boxes

empty toy box

She also decided that pulling up to standing is no longer good enough and now has to climb up everything, as she demonstrated by climbing into her sisters bed

Climbing bed

Her sense of adventure really is growing and I love that she is exploring the world around her.  I really love how my girls are developing their own minds and starting to think more for themselves.

This day I love my own mind.

I do love a good bargain, but I hate shopping in the sales.  I do not like having to rummage through clothes and other items.  I like things neat and tidy so that I can think clearly about what the item is I am looking for.   Also for me presentation is key, if it looks a mess I don't like shopping there and with two small children in tow time is a key factor, having to rummage takes up too much time.

I decided to brave the sales, as I needed some new lights and curtains for our house.  When we moved in the previous owners left their light fitting and curtains, which was great but some we wanted to change to better match our tastes and existing furniture.  I figured the sales would be a good idea for these items.

My eldest got a pushchair for Christmas and currently will only go anywhere with this pushchair so that came with us shopping.

pushchair

I must apologise to anyone in the shopping centre at the time.  Although she did do quite well and did not destroy anything in the shops with it.

We had a good look round and whilst there were some good bargains there were also some not so great.  I picked up my eldest some new Wellington boots for £4 from £20, which I thought an excellent buy.  My favourite reduction though was on a light original price £1395, Sale price £110, absolute bargain and a very very pretty light.

With all this shopping and bargain hunting my eldest did need to stop for a little sit down

Clothes sit down

I did manage to find everything I needed apart from one set of curtains, will have to keep looking for those.

This day I love Bargain.

After a very strange night which started with my eldest walking into my room and declaring the following statement ' Mummy, I have had a nice nap, lets go downstairs now' and taking me until 1.30 to get her to go back to sleep.  This then followed with my youngest waking at 2.50 am and was awake until 1pm where she had a 30 min nap given me time to get dressed.  Needless to say today I have been a bit tired.

I had planned to take the girls to a Welly Wander at Wentworth Castle today, however this started at 10.30 am and at that time I was not dressed nor functioning enough to drive a car or organise the children.  So the morning was a little slow.

The weather had cleared up a little so this afternoon I took the girls for a walk around the streets where we live, more to get some fresh air and just to get out of the house for a bit.  I am hoping that the fresh air will do the girls some good, maybe even help them sleep a little better tonight, we shall wait and see.

I enjoyed walking with them, it certainly gave me a little more energy after a horrible night and a slow start to the day.  Its amazing what a bit of fresh air can do.

Maps international  provide a large selection of maps to suit all tastes.  They have all kinds of maps including, personalised, old style maps and maps for children.  I was very kindly sent a glow in the dark map to review.

The map measures 841 mm wide by 594 mm in height and looks beautiful on our study wall.  What I really love about this map is that its not so grown up that it would look out of place in a child's bedroom yet its not too childish to look out of place on an adults wall.

The glow needs to be 'charged' in the light in order for the map to glow at night.  I found that the room needs to be very dark for the glow to show.  The map glows to show just enough detail and outlines all the major parts of the world.  It would make a welcome addition in a childs room to provide a small amount of light, to take the edge of the darkness, if they suffered from a fear of the dark.

I really love the detail on this map and will be using it to mark out our travels around the world with the children.

Both girls are still feeling a little poorly, and with the weather rubbish I thought a day at home playing with all the new toys and watching DVD was in order.

We played lots of games together.  My youngest has a bop and roll toy, where you use the hammer to knock balls through a hole and watch them slide down the ramp, she absolutely loves this.  My eldest spent ages playing with a peg farm and we built a tall tower from all the animal pegs.

Tower

This was the look on my youngest face just before attempting to grab/knock down the tower my eldest was building.  After the tower incident my eldest wanted to do some painting and sticking so I gave her a fish cutout, some glue, tissue paper and a sticky eye, and she went on to glue and stick paper onto the fish.

We have had a lovely day playing together and I even managed to tidy up downstairs and put away their presents.

As yesterday was Christmas I was a little too tired from the over eating plus excitement of the day to post, my apologies.

Yesterday marked my youngest first Christmas, it also saw the first Christmas for my eldest to say 'Father Christmas has been and brought me lots of presents'.  We also had a lot of 'Wowee look at that', lots of smiles and lots of giggles.  It was a truly wonderful day which we spent with family.  Lots of eating and playing with the girls and their fantastic new presents.  I think the best way to sum up our day is in pictures:

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas too

Its Christmas Eve and all day my eldest has been asking when Father Christmas is coming.  She is ever so excited and its great to see her getting into the Christmas spirit.  We made some cookies for Father Christmas ready to leave on the plate with his milk and a carrot for the reindeer.

Later we made some magic reindeer dust to sprinkle outside, so Father Christmas can find us and guide his sleigh to our house.  We followed the directions from Mum of three boys and my eldest thought it was absolutely magical.

The girls watched their videos from Father Christmas and my eldest just loved it.  She kept talking to Father Christmas as though he was on a video call.  We left our special Christmas key outside the door and my girls fell asleep as soon as they got into bed.  I can not wait to see their faces in the morning.

For as long as I can remember we always had a piano at my Mum and Dads house.  I learnt to play when I was about 4 or 5 and although it does not come naturally to me, like it does my sister, I still enjoy it.  My eldest seems to have a keen interest in music too.  I don't want to be pushy so am unsure as if to take her to music lessons just yet, but she definitely enjoys music.

Whenever we go to visit my parents she asks to go and play on the piano.  She knows how to switch the metronome on and as its an electric piano also knows where the demo button is.  I absolutely love watching her on the piano.  Instead of just hitting keys, she presses them individually and pretends to play along, whilst swaying to the demo music.  She seems to have a real flare.

I sat my youngest on the piano stool also today and she was totally mesmerised by it all, I am wondering if she will be as interested as her sister.

Some of my favourite childhood memories are visiting Center Parcs on our family holiday.  I would love to be able to give my children some of those memories also.  When I heard about the tots100 challenge to win a stay at Center Parcs, I thought I had to try.  All I need to do is write a poem about what I think it takes to be a good elf.

Easier said than done as my poetry skills are not that great, but I figured I would give it a go.

Here's my little poem, of sorts:

Empty mail sacks and sort out all those letters
Lovingly make the children's toys
Very carefully help Santa check the list, of naughty and nice girls and boys
Ensure the sleigh is ready to go
Spread Christmas joy to young and old

Whilst outside it might be a horrible rainy day, inside we have had loads of fun.  The girls and I finished all our shopping and odd jobs yesterday.  Only things remaining on Christmas list is a clean and tidy of the house, the scheduling of this keeps moving on a daily basis.

We visited some good friends of ours today and the girls had a good play.  When we returned home we decided to break out the paints.  My eldest had so much fun painting but then decided to eat the paint.  When I asked her why, she simply replied, 'because its chocolate Mummy'

Painting

I do see her point it does look like chocolate.  I had to explain that it was not chocolate and we should not eat paint.  At which I got this face

Sad Face

After painting I put on 'The Grinch' as a Christmas film for the girls to watch so I could clear up the paints.  I wanted to capture how still she sat watching it with her doll as this rarely happens

Watching film

She really enjoyed the film and kept talking about the dog who was dressed up as a reindeer.  This then prompted the question of our dog dressing up as a reindeer.  To which our dog gave a look of don't even think it and walked away.

The best part of rainy day fun is playing indoors.  The girls and I did row row your boat and played other games together.  Its quite hard to take a picture of row row your boat, the best I got was this:

row row your boat

We have had such a lovely day visiting friends, painting, watching Christmas films and most of all playing together.  We did want to bake a cake too but the girls were so tired we have saved this for tomorrow.

This day I love rainy day fun.

Firstly I want to start by apologising to both Karen at Women, Wife and Mum and Jaime at Olivers Madhouse, as they both tagged me in this Meme some time ago.  With both girls ill and not managing to get to sleep until 2am or some nights not even getting in bed, I have struggled to find the time to fit it in.  I am therefore making time to do it now, before I do anything else.  Hope you both accept my apology.

Here goes:

1. Bad Parking

I enjoy walking and will often walk with both girls in a double pushchair and our dog on his lead.  Sometimes I have to walk on pavements to get to either country parks, fields or play areas.  What really upsets me is when cars park so they take up most or all of the pavement, this therefore results in me pushing a pushchair with two children in it and walking a dog round the car on the road.  It is not too bad if its a little side street somewhere but as is often the case a busy main road.  It really upsets me.  Please when parking think about the space you have left and allow enough room for a pushchair.  I cannot replace my children but you can replace the wing mirror on your car.

2. Parent/Child parking spaces

The reason we have parent/child spaces is as follows:

 - provide extra room to get car seat out of car and back in again
 - Safety when loading children in and out of car and in and out pushchair
 - Safety to prevent weaving in and out of parked cars with a pushchair/small children

I get slightly annoyed when people park in them without children.  I do not mind pregnant ladies, because I struggled when pregnant getting in the car a few times if the person next to me had not left enough space, its hard to get a bump into a small gap.  I do mind those without children, or those sat in them just waiting or those with children who quite clearly are too old for a pushchair or a car seat.  On a separate note if there are no parent/child spaces I usually park right at the back of the car park to give myself extra room, I do not park in them because they are at the front of the store.

3. Indicators

It would just be really useful if people could let me know there intention of moving prior to the move taking place and signal this using those orange flashy lights at the side of the car.

4. Toilets

My two year old is toilet trained and will ask if she needs the toilet.  The issue is I do not know how long she can hold it for.  Sometimes its a matter of seconds sometimes minutes, so when she asks we go.  This is what gets me and has happened numerous times.  There is a queue for the ladies.  My 2 year old does not understand queues.  Whilst in the queue she repeatedly asks me for the toilet and I have to explain that its a queue and we will get there soon.  Please if you hear a small child asking for the toilet and you are in front of them in the queue, please let them go first.  Its not helpful turning round to them and saying, you are nearly at the front now wont be long, as they simply do not understand.

5. Manners

A please and a thank you, really do go a long way.  They cost nothing.

Phew, rant over.  Feel much better.  Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully still following.

I would like to tag

Claire at ninjakillercat

Helen at Mummy to the Max

Angeline at Daftmamma

Go on ladies have a good rant.

I always try to fulfil the wishes of my children, although sometimes it can be very difficult.  When my eldest is asked what she wants for Christmas her current response is Reindeer and an Aeroplane please.  Now I'm not sure how I can make this happen for her but I am trying.

Today I took the girls to Wentworth Castle.  Wentworth Castle has a special event on at the moment, Christmas at the Castle.  They have a really lovely family themed trail around the gardens in which to find the 12 days of Christmas.  My eldest however was more interested in splashing in the puddles

Puddle wentworth

The main reason I had decided to take them to Wentworth Castle was for the Deer feeding.  I am so glad we did.  There were Deer in every direction.  My eldest just did not know where to look and was amazed at how close they came.  She loved watching them eat.
Reindeer Feed

It really made me smile when she decided to sign Reindeer too:

Reindeer Sign

We ventured back inside the long barn where there was a selection of Christmas art to Colour and the chance to write a letter to Father Christmas.  Once we had written the letter we put it in the postbox.  After a short while we even got a reply back from him.  My daughter really loves that Father Christmas has written her a letter.

Santa letter

The girls and I ventured back outside and we found a house in the woods.  When we rang the bell we were greeted with a Ho Ho Ho, and an Elf opened the door, inside was Father Christmas.  I don't think my eldest could quite believe her luck that she had found Father Christmas again.

She once again asked for a Reindeer and an Aeroplane, but then said she wanted to go see the Reindeer outside.  I felt slightly happier knowing I had at least achieved one thing she wants for Christmas.

My eldest has been asking 'When Father Christmas coming Mummy?' she is slowly understanding Christmas and has picked up quite a lot.  If you ask her how do we know its Father Christmas she replies ' Red Hat, Red Coat, Red Trousers, Black Boots, and White Beard.' and what does he have ' Reindeer and lots of presents for me'.  We look all around for Father Christmas every where we go, today I took the girls to meet him.

I wasn't sure what the girls would make of visiting Father Christmas.  Last year my eldest just screamed at him and she is in the phase of people dressed up scare her.  It would be a new experience for my youngest too as it is her first Christmas.  I wanted to do something a little different and so I took the girls to the National Coal Mining Museum [NCM].

The NCM is probably not the first place you would think of taking two small children to visit Father Christmas, but it was worth every penny.  I put on my hard hat which my girls looked at me with confusion and we entered the lift to the 140m mine shaft.  Down we went into the dark, the girls looked a little scared but as we sang Jingle Bells and everyone was laughing they soon cheered up.

We got to the bottom of the mine and went through some doors.  The guides and elves kept shining lights into different sections of the mine as we all looked for Father Christmas.  Another door opened into a tunnel.  This tunnel was different though and decorated.  The tunnel glowed with magic and at the end of the tunnel was a little house, Santa Grotto said the door sign.  My eldest could not believe it, we had found Father Christmas house.  My youngest was looking at everything around her all the bright glowing decorations.

We patiently waited our turn and in we went.  My eldest eyes lit up when she saw him sat on his chair.  The room was beautifully decorated like a lovely living room, complete with a coal fireplace! 'Whose that?' I asked her, 'Father Christmas' she replied with a smile.  He spoke to her and she told him she wanted 'Reindeer and Aeroplane' for Christmas.  He gave her a chocolate and a present, which she could not believe.  Just before we left he gave her some Christmas magic in her hand, and asked her to sprinkle it on his reindeer outside.

Christmas magic

The other side of the grotto was just as well decorated with a sleigh, trees and reindeer.  We all got to sit in the sleigh and then my eldest sprinkled the magic onto the reindeer.  Back we went in the lift to the surface.  My girls both got a certificate to say they had seen Father Christmas and that they are on the good list.  Each got a lovely present too.

My eldest has not stopped talking about how she has seen Father Christmas today, she had such a wonderful time.  She held her hand tightly closed until 4pm, we saw Father Christmas at 11, because she did not want to let go of the Christmas magic he had given her.  She really did have a wonderful time, its a shame we could not take any photos but the girls will have such lovely memories of their visit today.

Both girls are currently a little poorly and on antibiotics.  My eldest has a chest infection and keeps coughing, my youngest is teething which has lead to an ear infection and a nasty cough also.  It means the girls are both tired as they are not getting enough sleep at night.

I wanted to take this afternoon a little easy with them both ill and spend a bit of time with them.  Whilst my oldest just wanted to watch DVDs my youngest and I decided to tackle the wrapping presents item on my to do list.

It will be my youngest first Christmas this year.  As a result she was a little overwhelmed by the whole thing of wrapping presents.  She loved the noise the paper made when she crawled on it.  Was amused that paper rolled and she could chase it round the floor.  Loved exploring how a roll of tape can fit over your hand.  Her favourite though by far was unwrapping the presents I had wrapped up.  She thought the noise of tearing paper was funny and giggled every time.  We even managed a game or two of peek a boo!

Wrapping presents is a job I normally hate doing as I am very bad at it but having my youngest to help really made me laugh and enjoy the experience with her.  It might have taken a few hours to wrap one present but it was definitely a lot more fun with her.

For some unknown reason my youngest today has worked out that if she has food the dog will follow her.  She has also worked out that she can follow him in her walker or by crawling.  As I sometimes give her bits to eat whilst she is in her walker, to keep her entertained, she has started following the dog around with one arm out stretched with food in it to make him come to her.  She then says gaga and gives him food.

What is even sweeter is she is now snapping food that she can in half so she can give a bit to the dog and a bit for her.  I think its an early start on sharing.  I caught her today snapping a biscuit and then trying to find the dog to give it to.  She has a piece in either hand.

sharing biscuit

My eldest will now say my turn, baby turn or baby first so she knows when to wait and when its her turn which is great for playing games and sharing.  Her signing has started to increase as well as she I think is trying to communicate with her sister.  When she is learning a new word and we are not sure what it is she signs it to be understood, I think its a similar principle.

Today I watched as she sat down with her dolls and read them all a book before bed time.  It was such a gorgeous moment and one I am glad I captured.  She told her dolls about Santa, his red coat, boots and white beard.  She shivered and went brr when she showed them the snow and she said the postman brings all the letters.

We finally finished our snowman!  Back on a toddler proof Christmas tree  my daughter and I started making a snowman at her request.  We had left him to dry and then would start painting.  Yesterday we finished a second coat of white paint and this morning he was dry.

The next step therefore in making the snowman is to stick on, eyes, nose and buttons.  We used pom poms in colours for the buttons, but you could just as easily use any other item including buttons themselves.  We used black pom poms for the eyes and smile and an orange pom pom for a nose.  I was thinking that for future we could have stuck an empty egg carton on for his nose so that it looked more like a carrot, but we went for the orange look similar to the snowman in the snowman book.

I wrapped a piece of fluffy material around the neck to create a scarf and then my daughter stuck some felt onto the head to create a hat.  She was very happy with the end result.

snowman finished

I found today whilst doing the weekly food shop some flashing ducks which you put in the bath.  The girls love water and having a bath and seen as they were Christmas ducks, I thought I would treat the girls.  When I put the ducks in the water the girls absolutely loved them.   The girls faces were so amazing and they spent their bath time playing with these ducks.

There is nothing more I love than listening to my girls giggling.  I love that if my eldest laughs my youngest has to join in even though she has no idea what she is laughing at.  They are becoming very close with each other and its so lovely to watch.

My eldest will often ask where baby is [she calls her sister either baby or sister and very rarely refers to her by her name].  First thing in a morning she goes looking for her sister rather than looking for me or her Daddy.  One of the things I enjoy at the moment is watching how they play together.

As my youngest is now very quick at crawling anything my eldest starts playing with she can get to rather quickly and investigate.  I think my eldest rather enjoys this.  They have played so nicely together today, my eldest has been really good at sharing toys and for finding toys for them both to play with.  My favourite today though was watching my daughter play with her dolls and watching my youngest play with her rocking horse.

I have been sat for some time trying to work out what to write for my review of Bits of Cargill by Michael Cargill.  I am not sure why I am finding it so hard to write, so I thought I would perhaps explore why this is.

Is it because the book is not funny? The book made me laugh quite a lot on most of the stories.  Some of the stories I did not find as funny as others.  I think that's the thing with humour though what one person likes does not appeal to others.  There therefore would be at least one story that any reader would find funny.

Is it because the book is not well written? The book is very descriptive and each story comes alive.  You get a real sense for each character.  Stories in which a character has a regional dialect are written with that dialect.  It is very easy to picture each character and become involved with that story.

Did the book cause offence or upset you in some way?No, although there is political and religious reference that may cause offence to some.  I guess that's true with most things these days

Would you recommend this book? I would recommend this to friends with a similar sense of humour to mine.  I perhaps would not to my close family simply because the book has a few swear words and I am still embarrassed by swear words in front of close family.

I think the reason I am finding this so hard to write is that because its a collection of short stories I could not 'get into' the book as you would with a novel.  I enjoy sitting in bed under duvet and get lost in a novel and I could not really do that with this book.  As a collection of short stories its a great book and if you want to pick and choose and have a quick read of a story than this book really works.

Welcome to This Day I love.

My name is Leyla, also known as Mum to my 3 humans and dog Mum to J. I have a passion for the outdoors and love to run. I can often be found off road exploring the trails and fells and covering distances all the way up to 50 miles. As a family we love travelling and discovering new adventures, as I try and run around the world!
