Review : Michael Cargill Shades of Grey

I absolutely loved this book.  Shades of Grey is a compilation of three short stories.  Each story is stand alone but contains a similar theme running through them.

The stories in the book are:

1. Shades of Grey

John has been kidnapped, he is not sure why and he is not sure by who.  Whilst reading this story you not only get a sense of being in the room with John, a fly on the wall if you will, watching the capturers torture him but also you can sense the emotions running through John.  It comes across as a true account and is incredibly gripping.  My only disappointment is that I was left wanting more.  I wanted it to continue into a full novel.

2.There and Back again

Follows the story of James, a solider in World War 2.  James is based in France and the story follows his thoughts and feelings as the War progresses.  The description within the story is so realistic you feel that you are there right along side James and his friend David.  I was moved by the emotions portrayed within this story and really felt as if the author had been there.

3. Down the Rabbit hole

Follows the story of a young boy, Tom, who has an abusive Father, Jack.  Looks at the relationship between Mother and Father, Father and Son, and Mother and Son.  Exploring childhood friendships and touching on the theme of bullying.  A really gripping read that I could not put down.

I cannot recommend Shades of Grey highly enough, I found it to be a truly gripping and exciting book that left me wanting more.
