Organ donation - opt in or opt out?
As a Mum I would do anything to protect my girls. They are my whole world and if they need me I would happily be there. I cannot imagine not being able to help them, especially if they were poorly or worse. I find it hard to believe that 1,000 people die every year whilst waiting for a transplant, these people could have been so easily helped. Like 90% of people I believe in organ donation, and have also registered my details on the system.
This being the problem. Many people are not aware that currently, as the law stands, we operate an opt in system. This means if you wish for your organs to be donated after your death you must register. With today's society we are all busy and for the vast majority of us, registering becomes one of those things we can do later. We put it off for another day and often forget.
On the 1st December 2015 a new act will come into force in Wales which will be opt out. This new act means you are automatically registered and if you feel strongly about organ donation you can then opt out. I personally prefer opt out as this means should you feel strongly against organ donation you are motivated to remove yourself from the register. The advantage to the system also means an increase in the number of available donors and ultimately a decrease in the number of people who die needlessly whilst waiting for a life saving operation.

I really think the new laws are fantastic and every country should follow suit. I've opted in already anyway but think that unless it's for religious reasons or something everyone should donate - Who wouldn't want to save a life? x
