This day I love.......

My eldest daughter has often asked to go to Grandmas house, or to visit her cousins but recently she has started to ask for a friend of mines son, who is the same age as her.  She asks to go and play with him, or if we go out she asks if he is going to be there and sometimes when I ask her what she wants to do her reply is to go and see him.  I find this rather sweet and it got me thinking that perhaps at 2 years old she is starting to make friends.

I think it is more than she can say his name because she sees and plays with many children at nursery and when asked about her day she will say who she has played with, but so far has not asked for them.  I can see the excitement in her eyes and her rush to get dressed if I say we are going to see them, its a similar excitement to if we are going to see a family member.  It must be a friendship or as close to at 2.

I would love for her as she grows up to keep this friendship going, as watching the two of them develop and learn from each other is amazing.  They even gave each other a hug today.  I really think its the start of a beautiful friendship between them

This day I love friends

My youngest has been shuffling on the floor for a few weeks now, rolling back and forth to get places.  She has now however figured out crawling.  She is so happy with herself for being able to get places, every day is a new adventure to her and I love watching her face as she explores the room and empties toy boxes.

Today she got a little bit too clever and has started to pull herself up.  Being very motivated by food, she wanted to reach her sister's breakfast on the table and so started her escape from the chair attempt.

Adventure

I love that she has such a sense of adventure about her and that even the smallest things bring her so much joy.  I hope she never looses this and continues to explore the world around her.

This day I love adventure.

I have been tagged in a meme by Nichola from fabfortymum, a truly moving blog and a lovely lady.  Here are the rules:

  • Post 5 random facts about yourself
  • Choose 5 other deserving blogs with less than 200 subscribers to nominate and link their blogs in your post
  • Tell your nominees you have chosen them for this award by leaving a comment on their blogs
  • Answer the 5 questions the tagger has asked you and ask your own 5 questions to the people you nominate
  • No tag backs (I will try my hardest)
so here goes:

5 Random Facts about me:

1. I am a fully qualified scuba instructor
2. I am allergic to caffeine
3. I have a fear of falling from a great height [not the height itself]
4. I love to trampoline and can't wait to start lessons again
5. I have a masters degree in engineering

My 5 random questions from Fabfortymum

1.  What one personality trait about yourself do you like the most?
Loyalty towards my family and close friends.
2.  If you could meet anyone living or dead who would you choose?
This is tough because there are two people living who I would love to meet and two dead and its difficult to choose between them.  I would love to have met Alan Turing, if you don't know who he is you may want to google him,  but he is the reason why apple logo is as it is and in my eyes the father of all artificial intelligence.  Would he be pleased or shocked at the way technology has progressed?
The engineer in me would have loved to have met Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to see what he thought of his work today and how engineering has progressed.
In terms of living people I would love to meet Derren Brown, because his mind fascinates me, how he thinks, what he does I find it so interesting.  Finally and by no means least I would love to meet Eddie Izzard.  His mind also fascinates me intelligence and humour.  One of those people you would love to have for dinner as would be great company.
3.  What is your favourite city in the world and why?
I am really not a city person, I much prefer open spaces and greenery.  However if I am to choose a city it would be Vancouver.  It has the green open spaces combined with city bustle and everything just feels peaceful.
4.  What is your favourite song or piece of music and why?
Very tricky I love a huge variety of music and have a favourite piece of music dependant upon my mood.  My favourite all time song is Gone Away by the Offspring the lyrics speak to me on a personal level, its a little hard to explain.  I also like Barry White, You're the first, the last, my everything because its the song I wanted playing when my husband and I were pronounced man and wife and we walked down the aisle to it. Whenever I hear it it puts a smile on my face and I have to dance to it.
5.  Are you a glass is half empty or half full person?
Bit of both if I am truly honest.  I always try to be half full but sometimes it just is half empty.

My five questions are:

1. What has been the most positive thing about your blog/ blogging experience for you so far?
2. What was your first musical concert/event/gig who was it and where and who did you go with?
3. What is your favourite movie?
4. If you could be a fly on the wall where would you be?
5. What part of yourself do you see in your child/children?

The five lovely people I would like to ask to do this are:

1. James at Daddy's Space
2.Carolyn at Chai Tea Mummy
3.Wendy at Glitzy Gleam
4.Carolyn at Diary of a disorganised mum
5. Maddie at Gammon and Chips

please do not feel pressured into this, but it would be great if you would not mind filling it in, thank you.

As part of our crafty Christmas today we made mint stars and angels.  I wanted to do a bit of a practise run on making them as I will be making them again with my daughter as a Christmas gift for her nursery.  My daughter really loves making things and baking is something she often asks to do,   She was really excited to be making sweets.

Ingredients:

500g icing sugar
1 small egg white
2 teaspoon peppermint flavouring
4 teaspoons lemon juice
food dye optional

Method:

1. Sift the icing sugar into a bowl

sift

2. Mix the egg white, peppermint flavouring and lemon juice together and then add the mixture into the bowl with the icing sugar.

mix

3. Stir the mixture and then use hands to form the mixture into a dough.

stir

4. Create separate dough balls for each different food colouring using.and place balls into separate bowls [optional]
5. Add food dye to each ball [optional]
6. Sprinkle icing onto work surface to stop mixture sticking and roll out.until its about as thick as your thinnest finger.

roll

7. Cut out shapes

cut

8. Cover a baking tray in food wrap and place shapes onto baking tray.
9. If desired can draw patterns onto mint using an icing pen.

10. Leave to air dry until hard [approx 1 hour]

stars and angels

We had a lot of fun making these and will be making them again soon.  My daughter loved sifting the icing sugar into the bowl as she kept saying, 'its snowing Mummy'.  She had a lot of fun and they taste fantastic.

all gone

This day I love Mint stars and angels.

It was very wet and miserable outside today so had to create some indoor fun.  We did some colouring, some playing and watched DVDs   My favourite thing that happened today was singing and dancing with my daughter.  She loves to sing along to the songs and if there are actions she will copy and join in.

I have decided to upload a video of her singing the wheels on the bus.  The video is over 2 minutes in length. I wanted to upload as a way to remember today and what better way then watching it.

This day I love the wheels on the bus

My eldest is very creative and loves to make things.  I thought this year it would be great for us to make some items for Christmas.  The first of which are the Christmas cards.  So if you are a family member reading this and do not want to spoil what your card looks like I recommend reading after you receive your card!

So here is what you need to make the cards we did today:

A4 card coloured - we went for green but the colour choice is yours
Paint - again your choice of colour but we use jumbo paint pads

What to do:

1. Fold card in half.  I placed my daughters hands on the card to asses if the image would look better portrait or landscape and decided upon landscape, this may vary dependant upon age of child and size of hand

2. The angels dress is one hand print placed with fingers to the larger opening, if using landscape.  The advantage of using a jumbo paint pad is that you simply press hand onto pad and then straight onto card, its very easy and clean to use.  Hand can then be cleaned with water or a baby wipe.

3.  The wings are made using a separate colour we went for silver to stand out and are made by pressing a hand print onto either side of the dress print.

4. The head is made by painting a circle onto the dress.

5. Add eyes, a smile and a halo.  If you feel really creative add hair.

That's it finished! So simple my two year old made all these:

This day I love Christmas cards.

We have entered this card into a competition run by moneysupermarket.  For further details and to see the other amazing entries please click here.

After our disastrous day yesterday, my parents kindly offered to look after the girls tonight so my husband and I could go out to dinner.  We managed to book a table at a local restaurant.

It was really lovely to have 'grown up' time and be able to spend quality time together.  The food was really lovely which all in all made for a lovely evening.  For us what makes this night more special is that both girls were in bed for 6 and both are still there 4 hours later.

I am now thinking of taking the opportunity to catch up on some sleep!

This day I love date night.

Have you heard about Social Blog stalking? In fact the Social blog stalking app? No? Well read on...

NuffnangX is, in their own words, a Social blog stalking app. It allows users to receive updates on their mobiles and tablets as they happen from their favourite blogs.

top bar nuffnangx

The app its self is very easy to use. Sign up is free and its free to download. Once installed and logged in, if you own a blog you can claim that blog as your own. Its very easy to do simply select claim your blog in the drop down list under your log in name. Once claimed you can customise your own NuffnangX blog profile, engage in conversations and keep up to date with NuffnangX developments.

You can find blogs you follow in the search box by either using full URL or section of their name. I have had a couple of problems with the search box. I tried to find my friends blog http://theoliversmadhouse.wordpress.com, I could not remember the URL and forgot about the word the, so typed in oliversmadhouse and it said no results found. I then typed theoliversmadhouse and it found the link. You need to therefore search for the whole blog name or URL and it must be exact else it cannot find blogs. Once found select Follow. This adds the blog into your following feed. Now whenever posts occur they will show up on your mobile or tablet device in your feed. Great for keeping up to date with all the blogs you follow in one place even when out and about.

main feed nuffnangx

As a new blogger I find this great because I can keep on track with the latest blog posts from those I have started to follow, I can easily add to the list of blogs I am following and my email inbox is not filling up. I can read posts whilst out on my mobile quickly as they are all in one place.

Another great feature I like is the recommended section. NuffnangX recommends blogs based on certain categories I.e. Parenting, Geek, Gaming, film and tv and provides a selection of blogs from around the world. You see a quick screen shot and a brief description of the blog and are able to choose if you want to follow it or look further at it via its link.

recommended nuffnangx

A further handy feature is the conversations section. This is like leaving an email for the blog owner, so if I liked a post I could start a NuffnangX conversation. If the blog has Conversations integrated then these will be posted onto the blog itself, like leaving comments in the conventional way. The advantage is that is can be done from a mobile device, which was previously quite tricky to do. The aim behind conversations is as it would suggest is to create better conversations between blog and reader.

I tried to integrate conversations into thisdayilove, however when I did so all previous blog posts disappeared, not great. NuffnangX assures me this should not happen and previous posts should remain. I have reported it and the development team are great constantly wanting to improve the app and its functionality.

So although this app is still in its infancy and has a few teething bugs I believe its worthwhile signing up for now. The development team are great and friendly to approach with any issues. Its free to download and join and it provides convenience to keep on track with the blogs you follow, or if you like social stalking!

[I am still adding blogs into follow list, so if you don't see yours there I am sorry I have not forgotten I will be adding you shortly]

The girls spent the day with Grandma today doing some baking and generally having a lot of fun, as I have heard.  My husband and I had therefore planned to spend some quality time together, as it has been rather a while since we went out just the two of us.

Unfortunately for us our day of lunch out, cinema and chill [I catch up on sleep, he plays computer games] did not quite happen due to a series of unfortunate events.  As I would rather forget that these happened lets just say we ended up with a fish and chip lunch which was very yummy, watched a bit of tv together and then the girls returned.

Although our day did not go to plan it was still nice just to spend a little bit of time together and what made it extra special was the flowers and chocolates from my husband.  The chocolates have now all gone but the flowers are still making me smile.

This day I love flowers and chocolates

Dentyl is a brand that many of us are familiar with. It is an alcohol free mouth wash that you shake to mix the two parts together, and once rinsed out you can see the result highlighted in the sink. Dentyl have launched a new alcohol free Active Enamel Restore in icy fresh mint flavour and very kindly sent me a sample to try.

When purchasing a mouthwash I always try to find alcohol free as I have often found those with alcohol tend to leave a stinging sensation in my mouth after use. As Dentyl does not contain alcohol, thanks to its unique two-phase action, I found that there was no stinging after use and just a pleasant feeling of freshness. A little like you have eaten a very nice mint.

As Dentyl is alcohol free it means that it can be used in children over the age of 7. The Dentyl Active Enamel Restore mouthwash can therefore be used to help protect teeth from Enamel decay, which is on an increase by 16% in the age of 8 to 12 years and has risen by 13% in adults in the last 5 years.*

Dentyl mouthwash
Dentyl Active Enamel Restore can:

  • Help strengthen tooth enamel by replacing lost minerals*
  • Help protect enamel from acid erosion*
  • Help enamel become more resistant to acid attack.*

I used Dentyl as recommended twice a day and found that it fitted into my normal morning routine. I liked been able to see the mouthwash working as it removed any bacteria and debris, I found this some what reassuring. As it is suitable from age 7 upwards it will be a great part of any families routine.

My eldest daughter requested pizza for her lunch today.  I thought it might be fun if we experimented and made our own pizza.  Here is what we did

Ingredients:

Tortilla Wraps [we used 3]
Tinned chopped tomatoes
Grated Cheese
Toppings of your choosing

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180 C

2. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in the Tortilla, we went for stars, circles and snowmen

cookie cutter

2.  Place shapes onto baking tray and lightly cover with chopped tomatoes.  [We heated our tomatoes in a saucepan first just to squash them down a bit and make the sauce easier to spread, but this is up to you]

As new year approaches many of us will be spurred into a new fitness regime and in doing so we run the risk of sports injuries if we do not warm up or cool down correctly. Myself included fall into this category, I often fail to warm up or cool down after sports and as I try to loose my Mummy tummy I can see injury lurking round the corner.

Others may find the thought of sport alone a difficulty, with constant aches and stiffness causing significant pain and discomfort to their daily lives. There are however several products on the market to help with both of these concerns. Two of which are Deep Heat and Deep Freeze.

deep heat and deep freeze

I had heard of both of these products but always thought they did the same thing not understanding the difference between the two. If like me you thought the same I hope I can clear things up a little

Deep Heat

Deep Heat uses the effect of thermotherapy direct to the site of body aches to bring effective relief from pain. In effect its like placing a hot water bottle on the affected area, It is most suitable to help treat muscular pain and stiffness, which can include rheumatic pain, backache and sciatica. It may also be used before sport. Deep Heat MAX strength contains double the amount of methyl salicylate and is therefore suitable for rheumatic pain, backache, sciatica, lumbago and fibrositis.

Deep Freeze

Deep Freeze uses the effects of cold analgesia to provide relief from the pain of sprains, strains and sports injuries. It cools down the injured area rapidly to tackle to pain and its like placing an ice pack on the area. Cold analgesia is recommended during the early stages following an injury such as a knock, strains and sprains.

I was sent a sample of both to try. Both state that if pregnant or breastfeeding consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. So I thought best to play safe, as I am still breastfeeding, and allow my husband and father to try. Both commented on how easy the product is to use and its convenience  much better than carrying ice packs or hot water bottles around. Deep heat was a big success for both in easing muscle pain. Neither had a use for Deep Freeze but said they would not hesitate to use if they suffered a knock, strain or sprain.

Both Deep heat and Deep Freeze are available as rubs/gel, sprays and patches and are available from supermarkets and pharmacies.

Readers of surprises will know that I have been without my car due to a small accident.  I have been driving round in a small car which although lovely does not fit my pushchair in the boot or the dog in with the girls, so trips out have been somewhat limited.

My daughter was heartbroken when my car was taken away.  She asked over and over 'where's your car Mummy?' 'Car back soon Mummy?'.  Today when it returned and she saw it again she started jumping up and down and pointing making ooh noises.  She was very excited to see my car again and said 'Car all better now Mummy'.

I am so pleased to have my car back, OK it might not be a sporty number or anything fancy but it does exactly what I need it to do.  I can finally get my pushchair in the car and the dog and take everyone out once again.  I cannot wait for tomorrow to go out with the dog and the girls, I'm not sure who is more excited my eldest, the dog or me!

This day I love my car.

My youngest had a lie in this morning, which would have been great but my oldest was up at 4 am.  I decided to make the most of only having one up that early and sat in bed cuddling my eldest.  She then asked 'Mummy what are you doing'  I explained I was resting as I needed my energy for playing in the day.  She said ok and then got me the phone charger.  I asked her why she had brought me the phone charger and she rather calmly said ' No Mummy, its charge up Mummy Batteries for playing'. I had to laugh and give her a big cuddle.

We moved into our house earlier this year and one of the things I love so much about it is the outside space.  It backs onto trees and our neighbours either side each have a lovely Oak tree in their gardens.  Today one of the Oaks was due its dead wood removing and general tidy up.  When we went to get dressed upstairs my daughter could see through her bedroom a man in the tree which prompted the following questions:

'Why is there a man in the tree?'
'Why do we cut the tree?'
'Is the tree poorly?' [I think this is because I said he was cutting it]
'What's the man doing up there?'

Whilst trying to get washed I noticed we had no water, nothing came out the tap.  It transpired that there was a burst pipe in the village, just what you need with two small kids.  I have to say the water company were amazing and fetched us bottled water so that I could look after my daughters.  However this raised the following questions from my eldest:

'Where has the water gone Mummy?'
'Why does it not work Mummy?'
'Do we need more batteries for the water Mummy?'
'Can I fix it please Mummy?' [As she comes in with her play tool box, spanner, hammer and screw driver]

When we finally did get ready, we met up with my friend again for a late lunch.  We went to Yummy Yorkshire Ice cream and had some of my favourite ice cream.  We had a scoop of malted milk and a scoop of strawberry, my eldest really loved it but my youngest wasn't too keen.

I really enjoy Yummy Yorkshire ice cream so we came home with a tub of Dandelion & Burdock Flavour, I can't wait to try it.

When we cam home the water was back on, my daughter was pleased.  The tree man had gone, although this prompted several questions as to where he had gone and after yet another busy day I can't wait to recharge my batteries with my Yummy Yorkshire Ice cream.

This day I love Battery, tree and ice cream.

A day full of decisions.

My youngest today decided that rolling was not enough for her any more.  She has been rolling around to get to things for some time but today she decided to crawl.  At first she tried all 4's but decided that was too much like hard work so she has decided to army style crawl.  It is a rather cute crawl and she was rather happy that she can now get to her toys in the toy box and not just the ones I put out for her to play with.

My eldest goes to nursery today and usually when I drop her off she is not very happy but today she decided to say 'bye mummy come back soon' and waved at me.  When we came home she decided to go to bed as she was tired and normally getting her to sleep can be a struggle.

So here is my decision I had to think about what to write today as its been a very busy day and lots has happened.  From nursery, swimming, cooking dinner, crawling and playing.  It has taken me a while to write as I have wanted to capture the best part of the day and I think that was my decision to write this post in order to remember the busy day we have had.

This day I love decisions.

When my daughter was 8 months old I took her to her first baby sign class.  The company we decided to go with is Sing and Sign although there are others available.  It was something I wanted to do, as I have always wanted to learn sign language and I thought it would help my daughter to communicate with me.  The first time my daughter signed we were on a walk in the park she pointed at the ducks got all excited and signed duck.  Her face lit up when I said yes darling duck, that she hasn't stopped signing since.  Her speech however at the time was still on the Mama Dada phase.  So it goes to show that babies understand more than they can say and are just itching to communicate with us about the outside world.

Since those early days my daughters speech has come on and so has her signing.  She loves to sign as it often helps with others understanding her as she learns new words.  I think this has helped enormously in reducing tantrums and encouraged her to try to say more complex words.  She absolutely adores Mr Tumble on Cbeebies and signs along with him.  I will often buy her the 'Something Special' magazine as it has signs in for her to look at and fun things to do.

Today we bought her the magazine and it was a special Christmas edition, with some Christmas style flash cards.  She loved these and began copying the Christmas signs.  She signed:

sign reindeerSign Bauble
Sign Star
Sign Squirrel

Bauble - Hands at top move down in circle motion

Reindeer - Hands like antlers

Star - closed fist then opens out in air

And her favourite although not Christmas but she saw one on TV

Squirrel - Fists under chin

I love that she enjoys trying new words and can sign as well as talk and its something which I encourage her to do.  I am hoping that my youngest also picks up sign language as she watches her sister.  I always say the word and never sign alone so that she learns the spoken word too.

This day I love baby sign.

My daughter often asks me when we are getting ready to go out, why we don't put shoes on her sister. She seems rather confused that everyone else wears shoes except baby. I tell her its because she cant walk but the real reason is that I worry about shoes on such soft delicate feet. I have struggled to find anything with soft soles that allow for growth and flexibility and that allow her feet to breathe.

When I heard about Bobux shoes I was eager to try them. Bobux shoes are recognised by the American Podiatric Medical Association as contributing to better foot health for children. Their philosophy is that 'barefoot is best', something I also believe. So when I was kindly sent a pair of pink flower Bobux shoes to review, I was excited to find out if they could live up to their claims that they are designed to mimic the comfort and healthy benefits of barefoot freedom. I was not disappointed.

bobux in boxbibux shoe

The shoes I received are part of their Soft soles [baby] range and they are so very soft. They have a non-slip suede sole and thanks to the elasticated ankle goes on just like socks but stay in place even with the most wriggly of baby which mine is. The shoe itself is made from a soft, breathable leather, which you can smell when you open the box. Everything about the shoe suggests comfort and have clearly been designed with babies in mind, even having the image design on the shoe face baby so the images are not upside down to them.

bobux sitBobux open pleaseMy daughter, at 6 months, was very excited to open the shoes, I can see this becoming an expensive shoe habit as she grows older, and she was ever so happy to have them on her feet.

bobux open She had no trouble with moving her feet and I could feel that there was plenty of room for her toes allowing her to move her feet naturally. She managed to use her baby walker whilst in them and do her 'caterpillar' crawl.

bobux crawlNow when my eldest asks where are babies shoes when we are going out for a walk I can finally say here they are.

Bobux shoes are available to purchase here: www.bobux.co.uk and are also available in Step Up [first walker shoes] and i-Walk [ pre school].

The girls and I spent the afternoon at Cannon Hall Farm.  I love living so close to Cannon Hall Farm as there is so much to do there and my eldest loves it.  As we walk round she signs the animals and does the different animal noises.  We saw a whole variety today:

pigcow shed

goatcow

horseguinea pig

She is more than happy to stand and watch from a distance but if they move she gets very scared.  I am trying to help her with this and today she actually stroked a rabbit, I was very proud of her.

rabbit

As you can see she looked really proud of herself for doing so.  Cannon Hall Farm also has a variety of playgrounds but as it was getting late and kept raining we opted for one of the indoor activities of colouring:

colouring

My eldest has one request when we go to the farm and that's to see the pigs.  On our way out we therefore always stop off to see the pigs.  There had been some new additions and my daughter just wanted to stay with them.

I always love watching how happy she is when she watches animals and I love taking her to the farm.
