This day I love.......

Christmas for me is the time of year when the family can all sit together and play the traditional board games. Winter is the perfect excuse for this, cold outside and a great way to unwind and have fun. With the children, galt toys have a wide range available to suit all ages.

We were kindly sent three to review and these are our thoughts on them.

Pirate pursuit

Pirate pursuits such a fun filled game that both my three year old and 19 month old enjoy and play together. It's a great way of encouraging talking about colours and counting money. There is the added fun of the wind up pirate ship!

Players add coins into their bags or take them away dependant on where they land on the board. The rules are very simple to understand and it has fast become a favourite.

Farmyard frenzy

We played this game once but the concept was sort of lost of my 3 year old. The rules are very easy to understand, you take your tractor around the board and add or subtract animals dependant on the square you land on on the board. The idea is to fill the actor with animals. The game is very colourful and I think in a few months time my eldest will understand and be able to grasp the concept of addition and subtraction. A beautiful game to teach simple maths.

Fun to write

My eldest is wanting to practise writing more and more. I absolutely love this and really highly recommend it. The cards each feature how to form the different letters and using the pen you can write on the cards. The pen is wipe clean and the cards can simply be wiped to be used again. The pen will also come out of clothes, furniture and off carpet easily! There is a notepad to practise letters also once confidence has grown from the cards. This really is a great set to encourage children to write. My daughter loves it.

The First Farmyard Puzzle from Galt toys has been developed along with Dr Miriam Stoppard, the UK's most trusted parenting expert.  The farmyard puzzle is made from wood and is a really lovely chunky tray peg puzzle.  There are 6 bright and colourful animals to pick up and put into the space on the tray.  The puzzle is suitable from 12months.  My youngest at 15 months loves to play with this puzzle.  She finds the pieces very easy to pick up, thanks to the chunky peg on the surface of each animal shape

picking up the pieces

The puzzle encourages hand eye co ordination, shape recognition and manual dexterity.  My daughter loves to pick up the pieces and look at the different animals.  She loves to try and put the animals into the different shapes and when she gets one right she loves to clap and looks very happy.

putting in the pieces

My daughter loves to think about each piece and we talk about what the animals are.  She loves to make animal noises with each piece.  I talk to her about the colours and the animals as we play with the puzzle.  Her concentration and thinking is clear as I watch her play.

The First Farmyard Puzzle is great for encouraging thinking, memory and naming, recognition and hand eye co ordination.  Its a great way to encourage learning through play and a lovely way to spend quality time together.

My daughter loves riding her bike.  A few months ago we were given a lovely red bike from Galt toys, which my eldest daughter simply adores.  This is a balance bike and is beautiful metallic red.  Sometimes my daughter will ask for her other bike, the one with pedals and I have had to keep saying no.

For my eldest 1st Birthday we bought her a Smart Trike , her face lit up when she saw it.  She loved it.  She had been on it less than 5 minutes when we noticed the pedal had fallen off.  Try as hard as we could we could not get it back on.  The actual inside of the pedal is broken, shortly after the other fell off too.  Which left the bike with two metal poles sticking out the side where the pedals should have been.

Smart Trike  kindly sent us a washer to try and attach the pedal onto the metal poles, but its the actual inside of the pedal that is broken and so we need a new pedal unit.  I came across a Smart Trike in the local charity shop today, so I had to pull over to investigate.  At £4.99 I thought it was an absolute bargain and figured for that price it was worth a shot at fixing our current Smart Trike.

The thing I did not count on, and perhaps rather naively, was my eldest coming home from nursery and discovering the bike.  At which point she runs over to me gives me the biggest hug and says 'Thank you Mummy I love my new bike'.  Slight problem as now I cant dismantle it to fix the original bike.  The good news is though that my eldest adores her 'new'/old bike.  I have not yet managed to get her off it and she is riding around the house on it.  My youngest has also took a shine to the bikes, I had better source some new pedals.

This day I love the bargain find that's love at first sight.

As a full time working Mum I understand the pressure of balancing work and family life.  I work 5 days a week, and between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm my girls are at nursery whilst I work.  I also have paper work to do at home usually a few hours every night.  Any time I do therefore get to see my girls I make the most of.  I refuse to do house work on the weekend as these are my two full days I get to spend with my girls and so as you may guess on an evening in the week, I'm tired have the house work to do but more importantly play with my girls.

looking in the barn
I try to make every second count on an evening.  Those 2 hours at the most (after nursery/after work until bed time) are so precious to me.  Latest research has shown that on average a busy parent spends just 56 minutes playing one to one with their children, read more here

Galt toys infographic

When I stopped to think about it, during the week this might be true for me, as cooking dinner eating dinner I guess don't count as play although I do try to involve the girls as much as possible in the process.  I guess there is no real solution to this, what I do try and do though is make sure the girls are involved with things like my daughter stirring and helping to prepare food or even asking her questions about dinner, what colour is the pepper? What shape is this? It's more about engaging them.

opening the barn

Dr Miriam Stoppard has recently teamed up with Galt toys to develop a new range of toys to encourage play time.  Each toy comes with a play guide to provide suggestions and give tips.  Which should help boost confidence to play and help release your inner child.

taking out animals

Galt toys sent me the fill and spill barn from the range for the girls and I to play with.  The barn is beautifully made of wood and very bright colours.  The roof comes off and is very easy to click back on again.  The girls and I explore the words on and off and with my eldest I discuss the colour red of the roof.  The animals inside are all brightly coloured and a great size for even my youngest who is 1 to pick up.  We love taking the animals out and putting them back in again, they even fit through the door of the barn.  It helps with co ordination and fine motor skills.

playing with the barn

With my eldest I often ask her to find a certain animal and what noise they make and my youngest is picking up on the animals,  it's a lovely way to learn animals and their sounds.  The animals will stand up unsupported so they often find their way into the sand pit or around the tables, as we play farm.  My favourite thing of all is to sing 'Old Macdonald' with the girls and then we pull out an animal at random from the barn and add that into the song.

The girls love the barn ever so much and it is what I use to play with the girls on an evening to help us all unwind and have some fun before bath time.  As we start to play with the barn our imagination begins to take over and what's great is that both girls can play together with me as I can tailor the game accordingly.

Something BIG has come to this day I love.  Its time to reveal, but first here is the background to the project.

A year ago we moved into our dream house, it had everything even a beautiful play house and swing slide set in the garden for the girls.  My eldest was keen to play on them and the first thing that happened was one of the rungs on the ladder broke,  We checked and did repair work to make it safe but the equipment and the house are 12 years old, never been painted or really looked after and so we kept doing more and more repairs.  We were then faced with a decision, do we keep making repairs or do we rip it all out a start again?  We decided that we would make do and mend.  We are incredibly lucky and grateful to have the equipment so lets restore it back to new.  Let's clean, fix and paint and get the girls involved.  Start a project with the girls so they can value their play equipment, want to play and take care of it.  More important let's get them outside playing.
looking out

So a project was born, lets Restore, Recycle and Renovate our outside play areas, so the girls can be inspired and motivated to care for them as they get older.  So they have somewhere safe to play and somewhere that will last as they grow older.

This bank holiday weekend we began our Project.  First up, cleaning!

Luckily we had sunshine for 3 days, day 1 was spent cleaning the playhouse and the other 2 days the swing slide set.

swing slide setwooden frame

dirt

My husband and eldest got to work with the Karcher K2 Pressure washer along with the Karcher Wood detergent to clean the wooden frame.  As you can see from the above pictures the frame was incredibly dirty  from 12 years worth of outdoor dirt.

My husband set up the pressure washer really quickly and got to work.  As the idea behind the project is that the girls help too, my eldest could not believe her luck when she got to have a go.  The Karcher is so light to handle that she had no problems with it.  My husband stayed with her just in case though.

cleaning begins

The power of water from the vario lance and cleaning power from the Karcher K2 was absolutely amazing, it made really light work of all the dirt and debris on the wooden frame.  My husband did this patch in less than 20 seconds just to show me how good it really was.

spot differencegetting there

Due to the Karcher K2 light weight and compact size my husband found it really easy to manoeuvre round the swing slide set.  The long handle made it really easy to push or pull.

karcher k2vari lance

Although it took 2 days to finally clean the swing slide set it would have taken a lot longer had it not been for the amazing cleaning power of the Karcher K2.

Of course my eldest did not want to clean all the swing slide set what she wanted to do was play on her bike from Galt toys.

red bike

She absolutely adores her bike, she loves the bright red colour and how easy it is to move.  She loves that it is as she puts it 'a proper bike'  It so easy for her to steer that she was riding up and down the patio for most of the day

bike

I love how well made it is, and that it is helping her gain better balance.  As she was having so much fun on her bike I could get on with the sanding whilst my husband cleaned.

We made a good start to our Restore, Recycle, Renovate project, the play house and swing slide set are amazingly clean.  I keep looking at them through the window in the pouring rain at how clean they are.  I managed to sand everything down, which means next job is repair work and painting.  My husband had fun with his new toy, a Karcher K2 pressure washer and my eldest had fun with her lovely red bike from Galt toys.  I cannot wait for Part 2!  Oh and the red bike from Galt toys has made its way indoors and is been rode up and down the hall way, its safe to say she enjoys it!

If you are undertaking a similar project at the moment, which encourages kids to play outside, Restoring, Recycling and Renovating Outdoor play spaces then please let me know and leave me a link in comments, thank you.

This Day I love the Big reveal.

We were very kindly sent a Karcher K2 pressure washer, and a bike from Galt toys,  The words used are my own honest opinion on the products.
