This day I love.......

My youngest has a current obsession with building towers and balancing things.  She will build towers out of anything, tins, wooden bricks, books, it really does not matter she seems to love the challenge.  I came across the wooden moon balancing game on Wood and Wonder and knew it was meant for my youngest.

There is something special about wooden toys.  I personally love they way they seem to last the test of time, and with a baby on the way I would love to be able to pass down toys.  The colours on the wooden moon are bright fun colours and really capture the imagination.  The wooden moon is made from sustainably sourced timber and natural materials which contain less, if any, toxins than plastic, and thus are much safer for your child.

The game can be played by yourself or as a group, which makes it perfect for my youngest when she wants to play on her own and also great for me to play with her when she wants company.  The pegs are all a great size and easy to hold for even a pre schooler.

The idea for the game is simple, balance the pegs on the moon.  The pegs however are different sizes and the moon rocks back and forth.  The order the pegs are placed is determined by the colour on the dice.  This means sometimes smaller pieces are under larger pieces making the game more difficult.

Wooden balancing moon helps children identify colours and helps with hand eye co ordination and problem solving.  They need to think about where to put the pegs and how to place them in order to make the moon balance.  This is a wonderful game to play and as my youngest also discovered you can build towers out of the pegs!  At £7.95 from wood and wonder this is a real bargain and a great gift

If you would like to play the balancing moon game I have one to giveaway.  Simply follow the instructions on the widget, which contains the full terms and conditions.  Giveaway ends 28th December 2015 at Midnight GMT

As a full time working Mum I understand the pressure of balancing work and family life.  I work 5 days a week, and between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm my girls are at nursery whilst I work.  I also have paper work to do at home usually a few hours every night.  Any time I do therefore get to see my girls I make the most of.  I refuse to do house work on the weekend as these are my two full days I get to spend with my girls and so as you may guess on an evening in the week, I'm tired have the house work to do but more importantly play with my girls.

I try to make every second count on an evening.  Those 2 hours at the most (after nursery/after work until bed time) are so precious to me.  Latest research has shown that on average a busy parent spends just 56 minutes playing one to one with their children, read more here

When I stopped to think about it, during the week this might be true for me, as cooking dinner eating dinner I guess don't count as play although I do try to involve the girls as much as possible in the process.  I guess there is no real solution to this, what I do try and do though is make sure the girls are involved with things like my daughter stirring and helping to prepare food or even asking her questions about dinner, what colour is the pepper? What shape is this? It's more about engaging them.

Dr Miriam Stoppard has recently teamed up with Galt toys to develop a new range of toys to encourage play time.  Each toy comes with a play guide to provide suggestions and give tips.  Which should help boost confidence to play and help release your inner child.

Galt toys sent me the fill and spill barn from the range for the girls and I to play with.  The barn is beautifully made of wood and very bright colours.  The roof comes off and is very easy to click back on again.  The girls and I explore the words on and off and with my eldest I discuss the colour red of the roof.  The animals inside are all brightly coloured and a great size for even my youngest who is 1 to pick up.  We love taking the animals out and putting them back in again, they even fit through the door of the barn.  It helps with co ordination and fine motor skills.

playing with the barn

With my eldest I often ask her to find a certain animal and what noise they make and my youngest is picking up on the animals,  it's a lovely way to learn animals and their sounds.  The animals will stand up unsupported so they often find their way into the sand pit or around the tables, as we play farm.  My favourite thing of all is to sing 'Old Macdonald' with the girls and then we pull out an animal at random from the barn and add that into the song.

The girls love the barn ever so much and it is what I use to play with the girls on an evening to help us all unwind and have some fun before bath time.  As we start to play with the barn our imagination begins to take over and what's great is that both girls can play together with me as I can tailor the game accordingly.

It has been rather a mixed day today.  The girls are still rather unsettled at night meaning my total sleep for last night amounted to 2 hours, and that was not all in one go.  With my zombie like state I felt like doing rather little today, but knew for the girls sake we needed to at least get out the house.

We took our dog for a short walk, as he is not very well at the moment.  My youngest fell asleep the second she got in the pram and my eldest chattered away with me telling me all the things she could see.  It was great to be out with them both and a wonderful way to start the new year.

Once we returned home my youngest, for reason known only to herself, decided to test out her balancing skills.  She crawled to the sofa and pulled to standing.  She promptly removed one hand and turned round whilst holding to the sofa with the other, she then let go.  With both hands up in the air by her head she grinned, wobbled for about 10 seconds and then fell down.  She thought this was so much fun that she kept doing it for about 20 minutes.  I was a nervous wreck every time she did it.

After she had finished doing this she wanted to play with her 'bop and roll' which she absolutely loves.  I just love the concentration on her face as she hits the balls in the hole and watches them whizz round

My eldest was in a crafty mood and kept asking to stick things, as she waved a glue stick at me.  So we used the left over sweet wrappers from last nights celebrations to make a 2013 sign.

I have stuck this picture on the side of our fridge and then any pictures she does this year will go around this year picture.  I think the sweet wrappers give it a great textured looked.

We also made a crocodile and a cow which I am rather proud of

After a zombie like start to the morning I am rather proud with what we have achieved today, and hope the girls have a much better night sleep

This day I love Crocodile, Cow and sweet wrappers.
