This day I love.......

This is a featured post.

Little Man has just turned three. His sisters were in proper beds long before this age. My eldest moved into hers at fifteen months, as we needed the cot for her sister. My youngest daughter moved into hers at eighteen months old. I am not sure why Little Man was not moved into his bed sooner? Perhaps the task of finding a bed and fitting that into the daily life with three children meant that it kept falling further and further down the to do list. For whatever reason, three years old was the age he moved into his new bed.

Choosing the right bed for Little Man was not as straightforward as it first might seem. His room is the smallest room in the house. In addition it has awkward room fixtures meaning a bed can only go in one place. I therefore had to find a bed that would maximise the only space available. I also wanted one that would last, as in one that would grow with him. I didn’t want a theme bed, although I had to really talk myself out of the Lego bed I saw, and because he is in the smallest room he also needed a bed with storage.

The task was simple create a bedroom that has plenty of storage to keep clean and tidy, yet also has plenty of space to play and have fun. My Mum accompanied us and we went to look for a bed for Little Man.

I am pleased that Little Man chose his own bed. Although I was less pleased about how long it actually took me to build it! The great thing is not only does it have under bed storage but also a bed that pulls out and the bed can be stored all made up ready to sleep in. Now when Little Man wakes up in the night I can lie next to him in his bed whilst he falls asleep.

One of the items I do want to change in his room is his blind. Whilst it is a blackout blind it was in the house when we moved in. I never got round to changing it when I put his nursery together and it is something which I always wished I had changed. It is plain black and not very exciting. I am currently looking at Direct blinds to find a blind for his room. I am still undecided if to go for a plain colour or to pick one with a pattern, I might have my eye on the storm troopers [although it wouldn’t match his bedroom].

I have no plans to decorate his bedroom walls, as they are a nice neutral colour and so I can change the accessories in his room to suit his taste as he grows. He picked out a fun undersea bedding, which I also really like and plan on matching the rest of the room to the blues and greens in this. I might even pick out a blind to match this colour, or see if there is a sea themed one.

By simply changing the cot to a bed the room somehow seems bigger and brighter. The extra storage the bed provides means I can keep the room clean and tidy and the new accessories and blind create a fun space for him to grow up in. It would appear Little Man likes the change too as since he moved to his new bed he no longer wakes up as often during the night.

You may have seen in an earlier post that next year I plan on renovating my youngest daughters bedroom. If you ask her her favourite colour she says rainbow and her favourite things are mermaids, dogs and unicorns, so with these things in mind I want to create her a magical bedroom.

I am currently researching different painting methods. This may sound strange but I am wanting to incorporate a feature rainbow wall for her. I am looking at several different methods including using bubble wrapping to print different colours onto her wall, using bubbles themselves to paint and creating sections within the wall for a more defined rainbow. I am not sure which method to use yet, I like the idea of the bubbles but I am struggling to find a way to make it work.

On this feature wall I also intend to either paint or find a large enough wall sticker of a unicorn, to add a touch of sparkle I would also like to find some glitter to add to the wall. I have started to put together a Pinterest board of my ideas of how I would like the walls to look.

https://pin.it/lpdz5di4vyjsnq

I would like to use pastel colours on the other 3 walls. Maybe using different colours to try and keep with her love for rainbows. I am not sure if I will add glitter though as I want the feature wall to really stand out. Instead I want to decorate with art work that also captures the other things she loves mermaids, and of course dogs.

Looking through the internet I have found some beautiful art work at a very reasonable price for her bedroom wall. Arthaus is an independent and self funded market place that currently showcases the work of over 400 artists. This means there is an enviable collection of art that continuously grows and changes as more artists add their work. The price is also set by the artists themselves so there are plenty of beautiful artwork at very affordable prices. I simply fell in love with this piece and ordered it for her bedroom.

To incorporate mermaid into her bedroom I have decided to look for a blackout blind with a mermaid scale pattern. The wall which the window is on I think I will paint a lighter colour in order to have the blind stand out as art of its own.

I am actually really excited to start this project and know it won't happen quickly as I am not the fastest at painting but I cannot wait for it to unfold and also to see her face once it is complete. I am also hoping to film the transformation so you can see everything come together over on YouTube.

Arthaus have very kindly offered a framed print to one lucky reader of this blog to enter follow the widget below which also contains the full terms and conditions. In addition the code THISDAY20 entitles you to 20% off any print or frame until midnight Monday 3rd December.

Last year I began redesigning the master bedroom.  The master bedroom and the en suit are the two rooms in the house that I really wanted to change.  The en suite is still on the to do list, but the master bedroom I am pleased to say is now complete.

For months I have been looking for the perfect light, it was the only item missing as the rest of the room was complete.  I had searched everywhere but nothing was quite right, until I found the light that was the perfect fit from Litecraft.

One of my main problems was finding a light that would fit within our ceiling rose.  Most had unsightly cables or the fitting was too wide.  I found several that I really liked but just could not make them fit.  I wanted to have symmetry with the light and for it to look like it belonged in the room.

In addition I wanted to have a light fitting that was a little bit special, rather than a plain shade, but without going too over the top.  I needed the light to be fitting with a master bedroom, for it to create a relaxing atmosphere and still have a touch of sparkle to it.

The light fitting from Litecraft is modern and has a touch of class to it.  I love the way the light catches and sparkles through the pendants and creates sparkling patterns.  The light fitting has a real touch of class and elegance to it and makes a welcome addition to our master bedroom.

Having searched for over a year to find the perfect light fitting I am so pleased that our master bedroom is finally complete.  The light fitting from Litecraft was worth all the searching for, as it is the perfect addition for our master bedroom

The light fitting was sent for review all words are my own opinion.

My youngest in particular loves dolls, or babies as she prefers to call them.  She gets them ready every night before bed and makes sure they have milk in the morning.  Her babies though need somewhere special to call their own.

The Baby Annabell Bedroom is an adorable canvas house, decorated in the iconic Baby Annabell print.  It opens up to reveal something rather special.

Inside are a mirror and hooks to hang all the essential items.  A wardrobe with storage compartment, complete with a blanket and pillow.    The wardrobe has a hanging rail to hang all babies clothes and space to store other items.

On the other side is a fold out canvas bed, perfect for baby

The Baby Annabell bedroom even comes with a cot mobile to hang over the bed

The Baby Annabell bedroom is such a wonderful playset.  I love that it comes with everything you would need for your baby and how it can spark such imagination in the girls.  This is a really wonderful gift for any child who loves to play babies.

All words are my own opinion

As my girls get older their individual personalities begin to show more.  I love watching them change and develop, from babies to toddlers to little girls.  As they grow their tastes begin to change and from liking everything pink they now like everything blue.  I think mainly influenced by the blue dress that Elsa wears.

As they grow and start to form their own opinions they want more personalised spaces in their bedrooms.  It is however not very economical or practical to decorate every time they discover a new like, but what can be done simply and easily is add wall stickers to add personalisation.

My eldest daughter is currently having her room decorated, it was done nearly 4 years ago when she was 2 years old and so is very much in need of a refresh.  We have just changed the flooring in her room to a wooden floor, which hopefully will help with her eczema, and are now wanting to update the walls.  The walls are going to be kept neutral and we intend on having a nature theme, as she loves the outdoors.  One of her walls has been painted different to the others in order to create a feature wall, and we intend on using a nature themed sticker to create this feature in her room.  Her favourite is this one:

nature wall sticker

I have to admit to really liking it too, as it not only is in keeping with the theme it will also last her as she grows.

My youngest daughter does not need her bedroom painting but she could do with the theme of her room updating, as it is currently very nursery orientated.  Her loves at the minute are butterflies and birds but yet would not want a nursery sticker.  The sticker would need to be more tailored towards a child.

What is great about wall stickers is that you can lay them out on the wall in your own design.  Even though the design might be similar to this

butterfly wall sticker

We could choose not to use the cat sticker and reposition the butterflies on her wall in our own pattern.  This would make for a perfect design for my youngest

Wall stickers are a great way to add a touch of personalisation to a room, in an economical way.  They can be changed as often as needed which is perfect for children as they grow up and their tastes change.

As any mum with a home and more than one child will tell you, shared bedrooms can be a nightmare. Of course, while they’re young, kids don’t tend to mind sharing a room, but as they get a little older, the idea of sharing with their sibling can become less appealing.

Sometimes when you have more children than bedrooms, there is no other option than to put the kids in together. The main problem for many parents is the fact that when it comes to creating a joint bedroom, it can be tricky to get right. As well as taking into account each child’s personal tastes, there’s also storage and layout to think about.

Decide on the layout and design

When it comes to creating a shared bedroom that your children will love, the layout is one of the most important aspects. The layout that you opt for will depend on what type of space you are trying to create. Ask yourself whether you want to create a cohesive look or a room with two different zones. This will most probably depend on the ages of your children and whether they have similar personalities and tastes.

Creating a cohesive space is simple, it’s just a case of doubling up on furniture, bedding and accessories. Bunk beds can be ideal as they save space. As well as saving space, bunk beds can also add an extra boost of style to the room. For the perfect beds, have a look at designer furniture online. There are some amazing designs out there, so whatever style bedroom you've opted for, there should be beds that are perfect.

For a bedroom that’s split into two zones, the layout becomes a little more tricky to get right. Although you want to create two areas, you also need to ensure that the two styles complement each other. For instance, clashing colours like lime green and orange. Before you start to think about the layout, take the time to get some inspiration. This will give you ideas and help you to work out what will and won’t work in the space.

Give each child their own space

Even young children need their own space, and it’s important that you find ways to give them it. A great tip that interior design experts swear by is using something to divide the room, such as a tall bookshelf or curtains. This gives each child their own space, as well as a sense of privacy.

There are plenty of ways that you can give your child their own space; it’s just a case of being creative. Bookshelves, curtains, and wardrobes are all ideal for adding a little privacy.

Use accessories to add personality

In a joint room, the best way to add personality is with accessories. Aim to keep the walls fairly simple, and then use accessories to add a sense of personality and style. By keeping the walls plain, when it comes to updating the room in the future, it will just be a case of switching the accessories.

While each child’s area of the room can incorporate different colours and styles, just make sure to use pieces that work well together. The last thing that you want to do is design a bedroom that clashes. Be choosy about the colours and prints that you use, and you can create a beautiful joint space.

It isn't always easy to know how to go about designing a shared bedroom for your children. However, by taking note of the tips above, you can create a beautiful space that your kids will love.

I cannot tell you how happy I am at the minute.  It feels like our bedroom makeover has gone on for most of the year, and I guess in many ways it has,  At the start of the year we began the design process. Initially wanting a walk in wardrobe and then opting instead for full length wardrobes.  We are so happy with this design choice as it gave us much more space.  I wrote a post in October which walks you through the room and you can read it here.

For the past few months we have been waiting on paint delivery and decorator availability but finally this week they all came together.  We purchased the paint used, except the paint for the wood work and used Wall paper which was left from an earlier project [a post to follow shortly].  I had intended the wallpaper to be used this way and we had just enough with no rolls left over.

One length of the room is the modern black gloss wardrobes.  These in themselves are very powerful in the room and draw your attention towards them.  However my husband and I felt that the opposite wall needed an extra something to compliment the wardrobes and we decided upon a feature wall.

We created a feature wall using paper from Graham and Brown and the design Spring blossom Mist.  We wanted a design that was not too complicated but yet had a special touch to it.  We also like paper that changes.  By this I mean that it looks different dependant upon the light and where are you stood when you look at it.

I was looking forward to the challenge of wallpapering however the bump prevented me doing so and so we used a decorator.  He did comment on the quality of the paper and estimated that it would be around £30 a roll, actually it is £12.  The quality of the paper is stunning and the metallic patterns add a real touch of luxury.  I love how the wallpaper works with the wardrobe and the blind without over complicating the room.  The oak of the furniture really brings out the metallic sections within the paper.

We have kept the ceiling and coving white and chosen Silver Feather from Johnstones for the remaining two walls.  Silver feather in daylight looks almost white but at night has a darker silver colour to it.  The walls join the wardrobes so the colour needed to be light to offset the black of the wardrobe doors.  Too dark and the room would have felt very enclosed.  Instead of painting the wood work white we opted for Mesmerise from Johnstones paints.  A bright white would have been too contrasting against the grey and silver tones in the room and we have found with two small children in the house show up the dirt far too quickly.

The whole bedroom has a real luxury feel to it, but we managed to achieve this using products without the luxury price tag.  Silver, black and grey runs through the room as the theme and all the furniture is oak,  The colour of the oak compliments the colour scheme and adds warmth into the room.  You can see my design inspirations here

The room has been totally transformed and I love how the room feels different in day light than at night time.

With special thanks to:

Graham and Brown - for providing the wallpaper Spring Blossom Mist
Johnstones Paint - Mesmerise Wood paint and Silver Feather Matt wall paint

When designing a child bedroom we often think carefully about every aspect of the room except from the lighting.  The placement of the bed, furniture and other items are all usually carefully thought out and planned.  Along with the soft furnishings.

We seem to spend ages making sure items co-ordinate and sometimes even that the room has a theme.  The light in the room should have as much consideration.  One of my children suffers to sleep if it is too light and the other if it is too dark.  There is therefore a balancing act to be had.

Natural light

During the day it is wonderful to have as much natural light in a child's bedroom as possible.  Some Children tend to spend a large proportion of their time in their bedrooms, and allowing natural light to filter in through the windows can often reduce the need to turn on lights and give children the chance to play in sunlight.

At night however blackout blinds can be an essential item for those children who wake easily with the light.  Blackout blinds come in a variety of styles so there is something to suit all tastes and interior design styles.

Safety

It goes without saying that safety should be a high priority for lighting in a child’s bedroom. Standard and halogen light bulbs will give you a bright light during the darker hours, but, they are better kept as the primary lighting source, rather than lamps. They get scorching hot, and, as everyone knows, kids tend to be attracted to bright lights and want to touch them. Instead, try some LED bulbs that give off very little heat, and are safer if touched.

Fear of the dark

Some children don’t like the dark, and those fears are usually formed at an early stage.  For children who are afraid of the dark invest in some night lights that will give off a soft and warm glow and help them relax, rather than dazzle them and keep them awake. There are plenty of great designs out there, so take a look around your favourite home-ware shop for some inspiration.  You can even find them in the shape of their favourite characters.  Most do not give off heat and some can even be taken into bed with them.

Spotlights

I love spotlights anywhere in the home, and they are great for kids bedrooms, too. They can highlight any feature of the room that your child likes - so they can always see their favourite toys, for example.

Desk lights

Finally, as your child gets older, they will start to read books while they are in bed. It’s important for them to be able to see properly, without dazzling themselves at the same time. Try getting a small desk light for them, and putting it either next to their bed, or clipping it on the frame. It will give them enough light to read, and stop them from straining to see the words and pictures.

The bedroom should be a safe haven; a relaxing, tranquil space that you go to when you need to take some time to yourself. If the bedroom isn't relaxing, you won’t enjoy spending time there. Any time you do spend in there will be hindered; you won’t get quality sleep and you may wake up the next day feeling worse than you did the night before. If you’d like to make your bedroom more relaxing, I have a few ideas!

Choose a Relaxing Colour Scheme

The colour scheme of the bedroom could be the reason you don’t feel relaxed enough. Red, for example, is a colour associated with urgency, and is a very wakeful shade. If you want to relax,  pick shades that have a more relaxing feel to them. Green, blue, and neutral colours can feel way more relaxing. Changing the colour schemes shouldn't be too difficult either; all you really need is paint!

Invest in a New Bed or mattress

Your bed should make you feel comfortable and be just right for your needs. Everybody is different. Some people need a firmer bed, while others need something softer. You need to make sure it’s large enough for you too. The John Ryan by Design double mattresses are great for those who don’t sleep alone.

Reduce amount of electrical devices

Having electrical devices in the bedroom has been proven to interrupt sleep patterns and disturb sleep. Even if you don’t use them, or if they are on standby they can still disrupt sleep.  Reduce the amount of electrical devices in the bedroom or if you can remove them completely.

Include Atmospheric Lighting

Atmospheric lighting is perfect, because you’re not going to want bright lighting in the bedroom all the time. If you’re trying to relax or read, you can usually get away with using a dimmer switch to get the level of light you want. You can also use lamps or even fairy lights to help you relax.

Have Candles/Incense

Candles and incense are very relaxing. The smells used can help to calm you and allow you to drift off, but you should never burn them as you sleep. Burn them beforehand so the smell lingers while you’re in bed.

Feng Shui

If you really want to make your bedroom more relaxing, you can begin to practise Feng Shui too. Some people don’t believe in it, but it can actually make a room more practical as well as more spiritually relaxing. You may only need to change a few small aspects to notice a big difference to the way you feel about the room.

I would love to hear your tips on the way you create a more relaxing bedroom.

Yesterday I received three wonderful packages which were all for Thing 3 and will be sharing those soon.  It got me thinking about the girls as babies and when we moved into our house.  My eldest moved into the larger of the bedrooms as my youngest bedroom is closer to the master bedroom, and was therefore easier as a nursery.

When we moved into the house both girls had bright pink bedrooms.  Which were fine but not really to our tastes.  The girls were both under 2 and so had not really developed likes or dislikes yet, other than a love for Mr Tumble and playing outdoors.  I decorated my eldest bedroom in natural colours and to reflect the outdoors.  This was over three years ago and it is now time to match her growing needs.

She is now a strong confident little girl with a love for fairytale, princess and the outdoors.  I am wanting to update her room so that it grows with her and lasts for a few more years.  The room is in need of a refresh, but I do not want something that is going to date quickly.  I am not wanting to update the furniture simply give the room a refresh.

This week it is National wallpaper week and this has had me thinking about wallpapering her room. I have been searching for something that the whole room will be able to take rather than a feature wall and some paint.  I also do not want something that is too grown up, and yet also not too childish at the same time.  I would like to keep those happy memories of childhood along with all the things she loves.  I stumbled across some wallpaper from Graham and Brown called fairytale garden and it looks perfect

I am going to decorate the room as a surprise and whilst she is at school.  I cannot wait to see her reaction at her new updated room, at the same time am also feeling quite nostalgic that my little girl is growing up!

Decorating a child's room is never easy. Their tastes change as they grow and you don't want to end up with something they'll hate in two weeks. When you move into a new home, it's important to give them a room that they'll love. Settling in somewhere new can be difficult, and a bedroom decorated to their wishes can help them. The difficulty is knowing where to start and how can you make choices that you won't have to change for at least a couple of years? Follow these tips to create a bedroom your child will love, and that you'll enjoy too.

Character Rooms

When choosing to decorate a bedroom with a character theme it is important to think about the longevity of the room.  Your child may currently love Disney Princess but in two years time or even less their taste may change and you have to go through the whole expense of redecorating.  The best way to design a character room is to paint the walls a colour which will last, but incorporate their favourite TV, book or movie character and then use lots of accessories such as bedding and picture frames.  This way they can be easily changed if your little one changes their mind.

Make It Colourful

Adding plenty of a colour is a must for any child's bedroom. You don't want it to be drab and boring. Many new homes will come in neutral colours, but it isn't always a good idea to paint straight away. You may need to wait a year or two for the walls in new build houses to dry out properly. If this is the case, you can add colour in lots of other ways, focusing on the furniture and accessories.

bedroom

Choose a Theme

Instead of using fictional characters, you can select a theme for the bedroom that won't go out of style. It could be based on something that your child is interested in, or it could be something a little more generic. You might pick a nature or animal theme, which could include motifs of plants, insects and mammals. Or perhaps it could be a fairy tale theme, with fantasy scenes.

Focus on Accessories

Painting the room so it's colourful is a good start, but it's the accessories that make all the difference. Not only are they easier to change when your child gets bored, but you can put in so many fun details. You can use the curtains, bedding, lamps and lots of other items to add extra colour and texture.

Turn Storage Into Decoration

Children have a lot of stuff. There's no getting around it. So you need somewhere to store all their things. It's a good idea to choose storage that doubles up as decoration. Try not to get a plain toy bin when you could get something that goes with your theme. There are all kinds of ways to add patterns and motifs to the room using different types of storage.

You have to think carefully about decorating a child's room. You may have to do it again in a couple of years, but hopefully will be able to avoid as long as possible.

We moved house 3 years and in that time have managed to decorate all but 3 rooms.  Our bedroom and ensuite are still in the original builders magnolia, as is the front room.  We are wanting to put a wood burner into the front room so really do not want to go through  the expense of decorating to then have to re decorate as soon as we install the wood burner.  Our bedroom needs new fitted furniture before we can decorate, however we are almost at the point we can begin work on our bedroom.

As the date draws closer that we can start I have begun drawing room inspiration for what I would like to do in the room.  Without giving too much away I am going to be giving the room a whole new look and will be documenting the whole process on YouTube and on the blog.  The room is going to be totally transformed and I am getting very excited to share it with you.

One of my current design ideas is to create a statement wall.  I would love for the wall to be relaxing, yet also different enough to stand out.  The room will have a modern feel to it and as it is a bedroom I need it to feel warm and relaxing.  One of my favourite collections at the moment is the Ombre Wallpaper from murals wallpaper.

Blue ombre wall paperPastel Ombre wall paper

I love the contrast in colours in the paper and how it creates interest without being too over the top.  There are lots of different shades to choose from dependant on personal choice, which has left me a little spoilt for choice.

I cannot wait to share with you my design ideas and hopefully soon the finished room.

My youngest is waking up more frequently in the night and I think part of it is to do with her bed.  She is in a very beautiful toddler bed, but I often hear a large bang just before she wakes up as she catches herself on the side of her bed.  She wants me to sit in bed with her, but I cannot fit in the toddler bed.  The decision was therefore made to get a new full sized single bed

We had seen a beautiful bed from Noa and Nani and knew immediately that it was the one for my daughter.  Her room was one of the first in the house to be decorated.  I wanted the room to reflect her personality.  Whilst she shows some feminine traits, she prefers mud and mess.  Her bedroom is the smallest room and it needed to be kept light, the furniture is therefore white.  Her walls are painted with paint from the Nursery Paint company in 'His Sunday Best and a feature wall in 'Dolly's frock'.  This great mix of paints keeps the room feminine and matches her personality.

Her bedroom has space for her to play, space to relax and space to read.  She adores reading and we purchased a tidy books book case for her so she can easily access her books.

Her Noa and Nani bed arrived and I began to assemble.  It was easy to put together by myself and had clear instructions.  I was rather proud of my achievement and impressed that I had managed by myself.

The Astrid sleigh bed is simply beautiful from all angles.  The head board and foot board have subtle curves which give the Astrid a real sense of elegance.  Astrid is a great height making it easy for a 2 year old to climb into, and giving great storage options underneath.  The design of the Astrid is one which should last my daughter for some time to come.

My youngest daughters bedroom has been transformed from a toddler room into a little girls bedroom.  It is now a room which we can add to as she grows up and her beautiful Noa and Nani bed takes pride of place

The Noa and Nani Astrid sleigh bed was sent to us for a review.  All words and opinions are my own

It is important to keep little ones entertained during the long summer months so here are a few helpful tips with what to do during this time.

Plant a garden - Getting your kids to eat a healthy diet may be a struggle for some family’s, one of the best ways to encourage your child to be healthy is by encouraging them to grow their own fruit and veg.  If space is an issue then small greenhouse spaces can be purchased from various companies, and children can be encouraged throughout the summer months to water and  care for the plants, it provides a great sense of achievement for children when the hard work they have put in pays off and they can pick their own fruit and vegetables.

Plant for fun

Children also love to eat sweet things, consider planting a crop of strawberry plants, a crop that will come back year on year if you plant in a sunny spot. If space is limited, planters will do just as well.  Using planters will also stop some plants from spreading and give greater control over your garden.  Planting seeds may be a fun way to teach your child the concept of photosynthesis, the BBC have a useful website to help children understand this concept.

Worlds apart for kids

A makeshift castle made up of bed sheets may be a fun way to break the day up, where the pirates are coming to take the treasure in this makeshift world.  Another option for in-the-house fun could be ‘shops’, where that penny jar may provide a fantastic source of payment for toys.  And of course if all else fails a healthy game of snap with a standard pack of playing cards may be appropriate to quell the boredom. Children enjoy delving into these different make-believe worlds so the castle or pirate options could be one to have them occupied for weeks and months, perfect in summer.  This make believe land is a perfect way to re-decorate the bedroom without making any permanent changes, just for summer.  Of course the summer months are also a perfect opportunity to re-decorate the bedroom as the warm sun allows changes to dry much faster.

Wildlife

Alternatively, if the summer one experiences is a particularly hot one then buy a play pool and water guns, perfect for those kind of summer days.  Get a woodpile, encourage the wildlife to come to your garden, in which you and your child can identify the difference creatures, this can work with birds to, a bird feeder in the garden is a perfect time to encourage animals with mealworms and seeds.
