This day I love.......

Learning British sign language is on the top of my wish list. It is something I have wanted to do for a very long time. When the girls were little I took them to baby sign and we had a basic introduction to British sign language BSL.

FlashSticks are a new way to learn a language. They are a fun and effective way to learn a new language. In partnership with post it notes, FlashSticks provide the prompt you need to continue learning. The FlashSticks can be stuck anywhere.

The girls and I have been sticking FlashSticks around the house.  We have walk stuck on the front door, and eat and drink are stuck on the fridge. They act as a constant visual representation of the words we are trying to learn, even sub consciously we are constantly learning the words.

BSL FlashSticks

FlashSticks come in a selection of languages and colours. The colours help to represent the masculine and feminine words, this was always something I struggled with when learning German and French at school. I can see them being very useful when my daughters start learning languages at school too as it will aid their learning.

As well as the notes there is also the free app. The app is brilliant for bringing the FlashSticks to life, which is key for understanding how to sign. The girls love scanning the FlashSticks with my phone and watching the sign demonstration.

The girls and I have decided to learn a word a day and so far things are going well. To keep track of our progress follow us over on Instagram and Facebook where I post regular updates.  I will also be keeping track of our progress over here on the blog.

We were sent FlashSticks free of charge to review.  All words are my own personal opinion

I have always loved the idea of learning another language, but whenever I have tried have always really struggled.  I often wondered if I had learnt at a young age if this would have been different.  Pacca’s Carousel is an interactive app designed for 2 -6 year olds to help aid learning another language.

There are two versions available a free lite version and the full version priced at £1.49.  It is well worth purchasing the full version as you do get quite a lot for your money.  Pacca’s Carousel features the following languages  English, French, Arabic, Spanish and Cantonese and is being updated throughout 2014 to include other languages such as Mandarin.

Pacca is a horse who helps children to build their very own carousel.  Children choose colours, numbers and objects for the Carousel in the chosen language and there are then fun interactive games to play.  The girls enjoy playing with Pacca and love the sounds the app makes to interact with them.  I really like the animation of Pacca.  My eldest is learning French at nursery and the app is a lovely way for her to aid her learning.  My youngest at 1 finds the app really good fun too and loves to dance to the music.

When my daughter was 8 months old I took her to her first baby sign class.  The company we decided to go with is Sing and Sign although there are others available.  It was something I wanted to do, as I have always wanted to learn sign language and I thought it would help my daughter to communicate with me.  The first time my daughter signed we were on a walk in the park she pointed at the ducks got all excited and signed duck.  Her face lit up when I said yes darling duck, that she hasn't stopped signing since.  Her speech however at the time was still on the Mama Dada phase.  So it goes to show that babies understand more than they can say and are just itching to communicate with us about the outside world.

Since those early days my daughters speech has come on and so has her signing.  She loves to sign as it often helps with others understanding her as she learns new words.  I think this has helped enormously in reducing tantrums and encouraged her to try to say more complex words.  She absolutely adores Mr Tumble on Cbeebies and signs along with him.  I will often buy her the 'Something Special' magazine as it has signs in for her to look at and fun things to do.

Today we bought her the magazine and it was a special Christmas edition, with some Christmas style flash cards.  She loved these and began copying the Christmas signs.  She signed:

sign reindeerSign Bauble
Sign Star
Sign Squirrel

Bauble - Hands at top move down in circle motion

Reindeer - Hands like antlers

Star - closed fist then opens out in air

And her favourite although not Christmas but she saw one on TV

Squirrel - Fists under chin

I love that she enjoys trying new words and can sign as well as talk and its something which I encourage her to do.  I am hoping that my youngest also picks up sign language as she watches her sister.  I always say the word and never sign alone so that she learns the spoken word too.

This day I love baby sign.
