This day I love.......

For those not familiar with Blinky Bill, Blinky Bill is a character created by Dorothy Wall for a children's book series. Blinky Bill is a koala living in Australia. He sets out on an adventure to find his Dad but it is not as straight forward as it may seem. There is plenty of adventure and twist and turns along the way.

The girls and I settled down to watch Blinky Bill the movie as we had kindly been sent a screening link, unfortunately for us the link stopped working half way through the film and then would only work intermittently which means we have seen the whole film but in random pieces. The parts of the film we did see we really enjoyed, and the girls got really engrossed with the movie. I think though we will be visiting the cinema upon its release on August 19th  to watch it in full, and in the right order.

The film features an all star cast led by Ryan Kwanten and other stars including Barry Humphries. The girls and I are looking forward to seeing the film at the cinema and watching it in full!

Summer is here and with it I have two very excited children and a small baby to entertain. On an evening we love to relax and unwind with a book. Maverick books have kindly sent us three books to look at, two for the girls and one for little man

The girls have been reading the new book by Alice Hemming, which is the third in the George the giraffe and friends series of books. Already familiar with George and his friends the girls could relate to the characters straight away. George and his friends have a new craze, a trading card collection game. The problem is they need a full set and perhaps the only way to obtain a full set is to work together as a team. One of the aspects I love in this book is reinforcing the importance of sharing and working together, and as the girls already know the characters they relate to the story more.

The girls second book is Not Enough for Queen Fluff by Rachel Lyon. My youngest daughter can be a little diva at times, making demand and shaking her finger. It is all part of growing up and I try to instil good values in her and explain she cannot always have her own way. The same can be said for Queen Fluff, who makes lavish demands but soon realises that there are more important things in life than material possessions. I am hoping this book helps my youngest overcome some of her diva demands

The book for little man is a hard back picture book called animal magic. Little man loves books and looking at the pictures, he is really smitten by the duck page in this book and taps it every time we read the book. The pictures are really appealing to little ones, with contrasting colours and wonderful patterns. The rhymes make it easy and enjoyable to read which is great for bonding and interacting with baby.

Three fantastic books from Maverick, perfect for unwinding in the school holidays!

You may remember a few weeks ago a very special delivery arrived and we were under strict instructions not to open the box.  The suspense has been great in this house as we have all wanted to open it up and take a peak inside.

The girls are huge teletubbies fans, especially after meeting them at the launch of the TV show.  Today is the day we get to open the box!

Inside the box we have a selection of presents in teletubbies inspired colours, we are excited to unwrap them and find out the contents.

Inside the parcels are a selection of teletubbies toys from the NEW teletubbies collection

Teletubbies Phone £9.99

The tubby phone has large buttons which when pressed will call the teletubbies.  You can hear the teletubbies singing and talking and the button lights up as to which teletubby you have rung.  The tubby phone also plays the theme song.  My youngest daughter has took more of a liking to this than my eldest has, as she seems to be less interested by it.

Collection 1 figures £3.99 each

These mini figures can be combined to recreate some of the scenes from the TV show.  We received two, a Po and a Noo Noo.  They are small mini plastic figures that are great for inspiring the imagination.  I can see our collection growing as the girls request more figures from the collection for presents.  They would make perfect stocking filler type gifts, or reward gifts for the girls upon completing their reward charts.

Talking Laa-Laa £9.99

Talking Laa-Laa has to be the girls favourite from the box.  She has become my daughters comfort toy of choice, only she cannot go in bed as she does talk when her tummy is pressed.  She says a selection of teletubbies phrases and is incredibly soft to the touch.   Her face is hard but has a soft velvet feel to it.

Supersoft Dipsy and Tinky Winky - £6.99 each

Each teletubby is available as a 6-inch supersoft collectible.  We received Dipsy and Tinky Winky.  They are incredibly soft and cuddly, even their faces are soft.  The bottoms feel as if they have beans in and the rest of the body is soft.  They are suitable as a first toy and I am sure the girls are going to love introducing Thing 3 to the teletubbies!

As 2015 draws to a close I am reflecting on the interior design projects that have been completed, those that are still to be done this year and those that will be completed in the future.  The arrival of Thing 3 in the early part of 2016 has of course altered the course of our interior design projects and plans but nevertheless we have still accomplished a fair bit.

My main aim this year was to design a luxurious feeling bedroom on a budget.  I originally planned the room with walk in wardrobes but after several design consultations this had to be changed.  It was decided that this would simply make the master bedroom too small, and now as I reflect on this decision I can honestly say it was the correct one to make.

Our master bedroom has been completed transformed and you can read about the transformation here.  One of the biggest transformations in the room is the wardrobes, which I still look at and admire.  Every time I walk in the bedroom I feel proud that it is my room.  From the gorgeous super king size bed to the beautiful blind.  I love every part of it, and cannot wait for the paint to arrive so I can finally complete the room.

The only part of the room I did not change was the lights.  Whilst I put new bedside lights the main feature light stayed the same.  It is part of the plan in 2016 to change the light to a new one and we are currently drawn to the Artemide collection.  For now though the light will remain as is.

As Thing 3 will be making their appearance in the New Year one of the rooms originally not due for a transformation now needs to be converted to a nursery.  The main aspect of the room to be changed is the flooring.  Currently there is a very dark carpet in there which to be blunt is horrible.  I really want to put some laminate down as it is much easier to keep clean with a baby.  The paint has been chosen and all the furniture is ready to go in.  All that is missing is soft furnishings and blinds.  There is not enough wall space for curtains so it has to be a blind.

On the list for this year, although it may now be pushed into next, was to refresh my eldest daughters bedroom.  Her room was one of the first to be decorated.  The furniture is fine but the walls really need a new coat of paint.  Her eczema is also triggered by dust and so one of the biggest changes I want to make in this room is the flooring.  Again taking out the carpet and replacing with laminate which I hope will improve her skin.  The final change in her room is the light.  She still has the same lamp shade she had from a baby and she could really do with something more modern.  I am currently looking through the collection on Lampcommerce to find one for her.

Next week sees perhaps one of the final interior design projects of 2015.  The front room is finally going to be decorated after living here for three years.  The paint and wallpaper have arrived and this weekend the plasterers are coming to fix the damaged ceiling.  I am really looking forward to this transformation and finally making the front room ours.  The long term plan here is to add a log burner.  The previous occupier had one in but replaced it with an electric one to sell the house.  The log burner is on the top of my wish list at the moment but it will probably 2017 before we save up for one.

The girls are very lucky that they have a playroom.  When Thing 3 arrives I can see us spending a lot more time in here and I would like to brighten the walls up with some new paint and a feature wall.  This is another plan for early 2016.

Before finding out we were expecting Thing 3 we had planned to do our en suite and main bathroom in 2016/2017.  However we have had to put this plan on hold.  This hasn't stopped me planning, designing and day dreaming about a new bathroom.  I have many boards on Pinterest full of ideas and inspirations for a new bathroom and en suite, although many of them are secret at the minute.

Maverick books have released three new books this September.  The girls love receiving new books and my eldest loves attempting to read each one.

Aerodynamics of Biscuits by Clare Helen Welsh

There are several things my girls love, one of them is biscuits and the other is pirates.  This book combined both of these elements and therefore had the girls attention straight away.  The illustrations are beautiful and help to bring the story to life.

As Quiet as a Mouse by Karen Owen

With a new baby on the way the girls enjoyed as quiet as a mouse.  They are practising hard to pass the quiet as a mouse test, just like Edgar.  Although they do sound a lot more like a herd of elephants at the moment.  They said they will keep practising.

Not Without my Whale by Billy Coughlan

The girls listened intently to the story.  My youngest in particular who has a love for animals had a confused look on her face.  My eldest however was asking questions about how a whale could fit in a classroom at school.  The book is clever at finding a solution to a problem and clearly had the girls attention, and had them thinking.  They both however found the ending really funny, and I won't spoil it for you!

We were sent the books for review, all words are our own opinion.

Yesterday I received three wonderful packages which were all for Thing 3 and will be sharing those soon.  It got me thinking about the girls as babies and when we moved into our house.  My eldest moved into the larger of the bedrooms as my youngest bedroom is closer to the master bedroom, and was therefore easier as a nursery.

When we moved into the house both girls had bright pink bedrooms.  Which were fine but not really to our tastes.  The girls were both under 2 and so had not really developed likes or dislikes yet, other than a love for Mr Tumble and playing outdoors.  I decorated my eldest bedroom in natural colours and to reflect the outdoors.  This was over three years ago and it is now time to match her growing needs.

She is now a strong confident little girl with a love for fairytale, princess and the outdoors.  I am wanting to update her room so that it grows with her and lasts for a few more years.  The room is in need of a refresh, but I do not want something that is going to date quickly.  I am not wanting to update the furniture simply give the room a refresh.

This week it is National wallpaper week and this has had me thinking about wallpapering her room. I have been searching for something that the whole room will be able to take rather than a feature wall and some paint.  I also do not want something that is too grown up, and yet also not too childish at the same time.  I would like to keep those happy memories of childhood along with all the things she loves.  I stumbled across some wallpaper from Graham and Brown called fairytale garden and it looks perfect

I am going to decorate the room as a surprise and whilst she is at school.  I cannot wait to see her reaction at her new updated room, at the same time am also feeling quite nostalgic that my little girl is growing up!

I love spending time with my youngest and we decided to make the most of a beautiful sunny day.  My youngest wanted to spend the day in the park and I thought it a great way to get outside and play.  We visited a new park to give her a new place to explore.  She wasted no time in getting to grips with the equipment.

eldest on slide

Her confidence grew as she tackled the stepping stone bridge

Youngest on stepping stones

She seemed to really enjoy just the two of us running around in the sunshine and exploring somewhere new.  I enjoyed spending a day with her and watching her confidence grow as she explored.

This day I love Sunny day fun

Our heating is playing up again. When we moved into the house almost 3 years ago one of the methods to improve our energy efficiency rating was to replace the boiler. It is certainly on our to-do list but we just keep putting it off. I am guessing we are not alone in this. Spending a few hundred pound here and there to replace parts, call out charges and fix the issue. In some ways this is very much false economy.

Most of the parts for our boiler are now obsolete which means we have to go to specialist places for parts. This increases the costs associated with our boiler even more and I am guessing it is only a matter of time before we can no longer source parts. What interests me is that we have been really energy efficient in other areas. We have individual thermostats on each radiator, so we can control individual room temperatures, we have fitted a wireless control system so we can control the boiler remotely ensuring the heating or hot water is under our control and we have even installed solar panels in a bid to be more energy efficient. Our loft and cavity wall insulation have also been done, so why therefore have we not replaced the boiler?

I guess one of the main reasons is that initial upfront expenditure, although we could always look into finance options like the ones from Eco Energy.  When you break down the finance it could cost us as little as £7 per week for a new boiler with no interest.  This certainly does make it very appealing.  I have been looking further into replacing our boiler and am slowly coming to the conclusion that it could actually be cheaper to replace with a new energy efficient boiler, rather than keep repairing it. Let me explain why.

According to the energy savings trust website around 55% of my energy bill is the boiler. I would imagine ours to be more as other than the gas hob we have no other gas appliances. They also estimate a saving around £340 a year to replace my old boiler with an A rated condensing boiler. A new energy efficient boiler would save me money on my bills, help the environment by reducing co2 emissions and create a reliable warm house. New energy efficient boilers also come with guarantees so I would not have repair costs for a few years.

Within 4 years, and probably still within guarantee, a new boiler would have paid for itself with savings. A new energy efficient boiler really is a cost effective solution and certainly the benefits of replacing our boiler are becoming clearer. Now all I need to do is persuade the other half.

I was given the opportunity recently to attend the opening of a new store, JYSK. JYSK is a Danish based furniture company who have true family values. Still family owned the company want to provide everything for the home for all budgets.

I arrived at the store and was surprised at just how much was there. They stocked everything from towels to mattresses, duvets to wardrobes. Each item has a variety of choices too, something for every budget and every taste. I was really impressed and even managed to find a mirror for the bathroom, it's only taken me two years to find an affordable silver mirror!

Whilst at the store I met the mayor of Rotherham. It was really great to have this opportunity to meet the mayor and mayoress and to chat with them about the store and about Rotherham. I cannot remember meeting the mayor before and was a little star struck at first.

JYSK often run daily deals and discounts and so it is worth keeping an eye out on their Facebook and web page as some deals only last a day. I am really pleased to have been invited to the store opening and will be visiting JYSK again.  I have not been asked to write this post, I simply wanted to document my visit to the opening.

It seems a long time ago that I was talking to the team at Aveeno at Britmums live.  They were introducing us to Ellie and Eddie an awesome duo of best friends.  The acclaimed children's author Penny Harper has teamed up with Aveeno to write a series of books aimed at addressing the difficulties that children with eczema face.

My eldest daughter is one such child.  The winter weather seems to be making her eczema much worse.  I think its due to the layers of clothes she wears to keep warm, whatever it maybe her skin is going through a bad patch at the moment.  The stories of Ellie and Eddie have been a great way to reassure my eldest that she is not alone.

The book has also helped to reinforce good skin care with my eldest and has helped us to make sure she has her cream on.

We are currently testing Aveeno cream with my eldest.  I have to admit it is one of the smoothest creams we have tried on her and does dry quickly.  She is currently experiencing a flair up, and the Aveeno cream does help to soothe her itch.  I have noticed a reduction in the redness but her skin is still bleeding from where she has scratched it so much.  I am hoping it won't take much longer to clear now we have the itching under control.

We were sent a parcel of Aveeno cream to try and a book.  All words are my own personal opinion

We are fans of the cbeebies show Abney & Teal. The girls love Toby the dog. For those unfamiliar with the show Abney & Teal are two rag doll friends who live on an island on a lake in a park. They have lots of adventures with their friends bob, a river mammal, Toby, a dog and Neep, a turnip. The show centres around friendship.

My daughter was excited to receive one of the first Abney & Teal magazines, published by DJ Murphy, which go in sale on Thursday 23rd October. The magazine comes with some musical instrument which is in keeping with the show. Throughout the 36 pages children are introduced to the characters and there is a great sense of discovery, as well as creativity, music, literacy and activities.

The magazine is in keeping with the show and my daughter had no problem recognising the characters. She loved the activities and it kept her entertained. For £2.99 this is a lovely magazine that is paced with fun educational activities for children, as well as stories ad games. A must have for Abney & Teal fans.

Today was a day of mixed emotions.  I met today with my manager and the existing team for the last time.   After nearly 7 years of working with the same company I will be starting a new job in September.  The company is restructuring and today several of my colleagues found out if they managed to secure a job within the new organisation.  It was very tense sitting round the table together, myself and 1 other colleague excited about our new prospects with other companies, whilst our colleagues each in turn received a phone call one after the other telling them the outcome.

I am sad to be leaving and incredibly nervous about my new job but at the same time I cannot wait to start.  I am excited and full of ideas.  I feel so lucky to have such an amazing job opportunity in front of me to go to.  I cannot wait to get started.

As part of my job I require a company car, as I do a large amount of travelling.  Today the car arrived.  My new car,  My eldest daughter was excited and looked out the window to wait for it arriving.  She saw it arrive and rushed to open the front door, saying wowee.  As I was fixing the car seats into the car, the girls climbed in the front and started pretending to drive the car.  Next thing I know they both start giggling to each other and then they did this

It really helped cheer me up after a day full of very mixed emotions.  Here is to the start of something new, to new beginnings

This day I love new beginnings

It's always good to try new things and new experiences.  My youngest decided she would try to eat two ice creams, one hers and one she took from her sister.  For her it was a lovely experience

Her sister decided to try space raiders for the first time and I don't think it was a pleasant experience

Although when they had all gone she was rather disappointed

I think it's great that both girls tried new things and experienced different tastes and textures, even if their experiences were opposites

This day I love the good and bad.

2012 has been an amazing year for me.  I want to start though with looking back on 2011 from July, helps to explain why 2012 was so great.

July 2011 saw my return to work following a year MAT leave with my eldest daughter.  The next few months saw some changes and incredibly stressful times.  The first in August as we put our house up for sale after finding our dream home closer to our family.  September/October saw my job be made redundant and frantically searching for another.  After several interviews, assessment centres, presentations and role plays I finally secured a job the week before Christmas.  Oh and not forgetting discovering that I would be having a baby.

2012 therefore was a welcome change and a lot less stressful.  I started my new job, although within the same company.  With the accumulation of holiday days plus training courses and meetings I worked a handful of days before MAT leave started.

Our dream house sold, the day before we sold ours.  We had the highest bid in an auction but the vendor would not sell to us so we lost another property we liked.  Then our dream house came back on the market, the original one we saw back in 2011.  We successfully managed to secure it and moved into it when our youngest was 2 weeks old exactly.

We had our first holiday as a family and our youngest had her first Christmas.  Our daughters are growing up so beautifully I cannot wait to watch them develop and see what 2013 brings for us as a family.

I want to wish all my followers a very happy new year and here is to the start of something new.

2012 review

This day I love the start of something new
