This day I love.......

Whilst the lodge offered more than adequate self catering facilitates, as a family we wanted to experience the whole of Bluestone and therefore decided to try each of the restaurants on site. I have composed a quick round up of each of the places we ate at.

Woody wilds dinner show (wild wood cafe) and breakfast

We booked in advance to have breakfast at Woody Wood Cafe and to have dinner at Woody Wild interactive dinner show.  The breakfast was a buffet and had everything from full English Hot breakfast, to cereals, toast and fresh fruit.  There was plenty for us all to eat and after breakfast the girls got to meet one of the Woody woodland gang.

Woody Wilds dinner show followed an interactive show which the girls really loved.  The magical tree had them mesmerised and it was a lovely family evening.  The food was brought to your table and consisted of chips, sausage and chicken nuggets, accompanied with baked beans and corn.  Not the healthiest of dinners but the kids really enjoyed it.

Farmhouse grill

I have to admit to being very unimpressed with the farmhouse grill. The large ceilings gave the place an echoing noise as we ate. Myself and the girls felt cold and had to put our outdoor coats on. The food choice was grilled meats which was to be expected, but service was really slow. We had to remind our waiter at one point. I ordered a medium steak and it came extremely well done which just was unappetising. They had run out of sundaes for the kids and instead gave vanilla ice cream, yet we were charged as a sundae. We also had to ask for a spoon to eat the ice cream with. To add to our evening the card machine broke twice whilst trying to take our payment so we then had to go and visit a cash point. Not the greatest of evenings and I would not go back there. They do do takeaway which we did not try but perhaps this would be better.

Camp smokey

This has to be my favourite spot at Bluestones. Set out in the woods it is a walk to get to it but in my opinion well worth it. The food might not be stylish to look at but it tasted fantastic. The traditional camp food. Your order is called by your name with the bang of a pan which certainly adds to the atmosphere. You can choose to eat inside or out. After dinner there is a flame pit allowing you to toast marshmallows which is a real treat.

Oak tree restaurant

The oak tree restaurant opened whilst we were there. It takes local Welsh product and adds an Italian twist. This is a sit down formal affair but children are made to feel welcome. The food here was amazing, really beautiful and full of flavour. Certainly one of my favourite places to eat in terms of taste. There was a good choice on the menu and the deserts were heavenly.

The Knights Tafarn

There is a lovely atmosphere in the Knights Tafarn. It is a child/family friendly pub which has a real medical theme and feel to it. The portion sizes were quite large so worth the money. Menu is what you would typically expect from a pub menu, fish and chips, pasta, burgers etc. We enjoyed our time at the Knights Tafarn the atmosphere made it very welcoming.

The Fish Shack at Blue lagoon

The Fish Shack is located poolside at Blue Lagoon. We sat and ate here in our swimming costumes with towels around us and we were not cold. The choice of food here is your usual fast food, burgers, fish fingers and chips. There are kids meals available, which are smaller meals to the adult portion. It cost us £19 to feed the four of us including soft drinks. Our food was hot and there was minimal wait.

We were out and about on Sunday and decided to treat the girls to lunch at a Beefeater restaurant near to us.  The Brecks is situated near to both J33 of the M1 and J1 of the M18.  From the outside you maybe forgiven in thinking that it might not be much inside, but step through the doors and a whole new experience awaits.

A warm hello

The Brecks has recently been refurbished and the modern interior is clean and fresh.  Staff are friendly and welcoming and there is a warm friendly atmosphere.  Families are definitely made to feel welcome and children of all ages are catered for.

comfy seating

The girls began by choosing their own lunch.  As their menu was all photos they could easily see what was on offer and make their own choices

My husband and I had rather difficult choice to make, everything looked great.  I decided to go for the Sunday Lunch, it was Sunday after all, and my husband went for the special as recommended.  The girls were kept entertained whilst we were waiting for dinner to arrive.  They had an activity book to do and colouring pencils for drawing.

Our dinner arrived and it looked fantastic

Our server promised the girls if they ate their dinner they could have a balloon and this spurred them on.  She kept her word and the girls were given a balloon.

We decided to treat the girls to desert, which I have to say were simply amazing.  The girls took on the chocolate challenge and for the most part won

chocolate chops

We had a really lovely afternoon at the Brecks and would certainly go back again for lunch or dinner one day

We were sent a voucher which covered half of our meal costs.  We really enjoyed our lunch at the Brecks and would certainly return again.

Whilst on holiday in Cornwall we were treated to a lovely dinner at the New Inn in Goon Havern.  The New Inn has the advantage of been owned by Park leisure, yet also retaining its roots very much as the local village pub.  Iain, the new manager, very much wants the pub to retain its local roots and that is evident throughout.  Not only is all the food sourced locally but the interior where possible also comes from local trade.

The New Inn

The New Inn is very welcoming.  The warm wood burning fire creates a lovely cosy feel.  I was very impressed with the layout.  How each area was cleverly thought through to allow you to find your own cosy space without feeling isolated, yet still retaining privacy.  The bar and restaurant are separated by clever use of glass meaning that you still feel part of each other and also in a separate area at the same time.

There is plenty of space to walk around and the feel of the room flows nicely so that at no point do you feel crowded.  The décor is well thought out, creating a warm welcome atmosphere and retaining a modern yet village pub feel.

We had a very hard time choosing what to eat.  The girls were well catered for which is always lovely to see.  Our food arrived very fresh and hot.  All sourced locally where possible and all picked for its freshness.

main course

You could really tell the food had been prepared fresh on the premises, and it screamed good quality.  Everything was simply perfect, the girls really enjoyed their food too.  We could not pass up the opportunity for desert after such mouth watering delicious main courses.

The best way I think to judge how good the food really is is to see the amount of empty plates, big check on that side, and the number of smiling faces.  I think its clear to see how much the girls enjoyed themselves and this was also echoed in my husband and I.

empty plates and happy faces

After all the delicious food there was only one thing left to do.  That was to explore the wonderful play area outside.  The girls loved it.

The New Inn at Goon Havern is easy to find just of the A3075.  There are plenty of parking spaces, a warm friendly atmosphere and amazingly good food.  I would not hesitate to go again and would really recommend a visit if you are in Cornwall.

We were provided with soft drinks and a meal to review the New Inn, all words and opinions are my own
