This day I love.......

Since my eldest daughter was 8 months old we have attended a Sing and Sign class.  I remember walking in the park and my eldest signed duck at me then frantically pointed at the ducks on the water.  When I said to her 'yes, look at those ducks' she smiled so much and was so pleased that I had understood her and from then on she signed more and more.  My youngest is following, she now signs milk when she wants milk, very handy and she also loves that I understand her.

Since that first session I have attended all the terms, using my holiday days when I returned to work, with my daughters and today was our last class.  I am really sad that we will no longer be attending sing and sign as both girls have had so much fun.  Not only that but I clearly see a huge benefit in the girls communication skills.

I am too frightened to tell my eldest she will no longer see Jessie cat again, the sing and sign mascot, as I know it will bring a lot of tears.  She asks for her every day and is so excited when we go to class.  I can't quite believe how quick the time has gone.

I went through my entire pregnancy with my youngest at the class.  I attended a class on my due date with all the other mums asking if I was OK all the way through class.  The week after I turned up with my youngest at 6 days old.  She has grown up, from bump to birth, at sing and sign, possibly one of the youngest attendees. It feels like leaving a part of your family.

I have no doubt that we will continue to watch the DVD at home and listen to the CD in the car.  Even sing the songs at home as both girls really enjoyed the classes.  It has been really lovely watching the girls communicate from a young age and its really lovely watching my eldest sign at my youngest in an attempt to communicate with her.  Sing and Sign has been a big part of the girls lives and although we won't be attending the classes I am sure it will continue to be a big part as they grown up.

The girls and I have had a very busy but lovely day.  We have attended two parties, done our weekly shop, bought a few craft bits [will be a few posts on these in the next few days] and gone swimming.  The party season definitely has begun.

Our first party was the Sing and Sign Christmas party.  I told my daughter that we were going to see Jessie Cat [she is the mascot for Sing and Sign] this morning and she got very excited.  When we arrived at the venue she turned and looked at me and said 'Jessie Cat, Jessie Cat' with a huge grin on her face.  She then tried to get out of her car seat as she wanted to get inside.

It was really lovely to see all the people who we have had signing classes with over the past 2 years.  Some children will no longer be attending future classes as they are starting school and so it was lovely to see them to say a proper goodbye.  My eldest loved the craft activities and made her own Father Christmas.  She was so happy to sing and sign the Christmas songs and to see Jessie Cat again.

Her next party was at a local soft centre play area for one of her friends from swimming class.  At first my daughter stayed very close to me and wanted me to sit with her as she played.  After a couple of turns on the slide she soon forgot her shyness and was off running around pretending to be a monkey.  It was really lovely watching her play and great to see the other Mums from swimming in a non swimming environment.

Soft play

I then took her shopping which she absolutely loves so she got to sit in her trolley.  We also went to the local pet store to pick up food for the dog, so she got to see a variety of animals.  Another treat for her was that we saw 2 trains and her Auntie even came to say hello.

I really feel like the party season has well and truly begun.  Both girls have had a fantastic day and a very tired Mummy has loved watching them have fun.

This day I love Parties.

When my daughter was 8 months old I took her to her first baby sign class.  The company we decided to go with is Sing and Sign although there are others available.  It was something I wanted to do, as I have always wanted to learn sign language and I thought it would help my daughter to communicate with me.  The first time my daughter signed we were on a walk in the park she pointed at the ducks got all excited and signed duck.  Her face lit up when I said yes darling duck, that she hasn't stopped signing since.  Her speech however at the time was still on the Mama Dada phase.  So it goes to show that babies understand more than they can say and are just itching to communicate with us about the outside world.

Since those early days my daughters speech has come on and so has her signing.  She loves to sign as it often helps with others understanding her as she learns new words.  I think this has helped enormously in reducing tantrums and encouraged her to try to say more complex words.  She absolutely adores Mr Tumble on Cbeebies and signs along with him.  I will often buy her the 'Something Special' magazine as it has signs in for her to look at and fun things to do.

Today we bought her the magazine and it was a special Christmas edition, with some Christmas style flash cards.  She loved these and began copying the Christmas signs.  She signed:

sign reindeerSign Bauble
Sign Star
Sign Squirrel

Bauble - Hands at top move down in circle motion

Reindeer - Hands like antlers

Star - closed fist then opens out in air

And her favourite although not Christmas but she saw one on TV

Squirrel - Fists under chin

I love that she enjoys trying new words and can sign as well as talk and its something which I encourage her to do.  I am hoping that my youngest also picks up sign language as she watches her sister.  I always say the word and never sign alone so that she learns the spoken word too.

This day I love baby sign.
