This day I love.......

In 2014 I had never run further than the end of my street, except if you count the time I ran 800m at school in under 2min 30 and nearly died.  I wasn't a runner.  I simply could not understand why people ran.  It just did not compute.

To understand why I run, you need to understand where I came from.

I was challenged in September 2014 to run 10 miles at the end of 10 months.  Challenge accepted, and I booked a half marathon for June 2015.  I even took it a step further and booked a marathon for October 2015 to celebrate a year of running.  I thought why not? if you going to do a challenge you might as well go for it.

Running did not come easy.  I found it really hard work and then sustained an injury which meant I put everything on hold and started again end of November.  Parkrun started to become the norm in the new year and 2015 looked set to be a good year of running.  I managed a 10K before injury struck again.  Another few months off just before a half marathon in June.

The half marathon was completed and with it the challenge.  I had done little if any training, bar parkrun, but it still felt an achievement.  This is when things changed.  Running began to get really hard work.  Every step I took I felt dizzy and sick.  In fact I could not run more than 10 steps without feeling ill.  I discovered I was pregnant, and whilst determined to run throughout my pregnancy I stopped after completing the marathon at 18 weeks and 4 days.  Parkrun however continued but as a volunteer, which I love doing.  I volunteered on the Saturday and he was born on the Wednesday, I was back a few weeks later.  Parkrun is my second home, my second family.

Not breastfeeding meant I could start running again quicker than if I was breastfeeding, and in July 2016 I joined a running club.  This was one of the best decisions I have made.  I feel like I have found somewhere I belong, another running family.  A space I can be me.  A space I can just forget about everything.  A place where I can just think.  I can laugh, joke, swear, relax, cry, talk, just be me.

I have my identity back.

I work from home, with a toddler [and I use that term loosely as he refuses to walk] for company.  Which means I never get to be alone.  I always have company when I go to the bathroom, I always have company in the car, I always have company in the shower and as for eating or drinking anything warm without been used as a climbing frame you can just forget it.  I don't get 'me' time.  I don't have a commute to work where I can escape listening to what I want to on the radio, I get to listen to trolls on repeat.  I can't remember the last time I had a shower alone or for that matter go to the bathroom alone.  My days are filled with love, and cuddles and toddler games and it is amazing and so worth it but I also need time to be me.  To not have to think about when I last changed a nappy, or what to cook for tea or which cupboard is currently been emptied.  I need an identity and a name, not 'so and so Mum'.  I need to unwind.  My kids are bad sleepers, its usually gone 10 before I get 3 asleep and you can guarantee at least 1 will wake up in the night.  Which means I never switch off.  I never get a break.  I can only apologies if this sounds selfish, but we all need a rest at some point.  We all need at least a bit of time to think each day.

So why do I run?

I run for my sanity.  I run so I can have an adult conversation with some one for at least 30 minutes.  I run so I can be myself again and switch off from a hard and exhausting day.  When I run in the mornings it makes me feel alive and ready to face the day ahead.  I run because it makes me feel alive and makes me feel free. I feel lucky that I can run.  I run because it clears my mind and helps me to think better, making my working day more productive.  I run because it helps my depression.  I run because when I get home I have three children to cuddle and it makes me a better Mum.

I run because for those few minutes I appreciate everything so much more.

It might sound selfish but I need that head space, I need that time for me, without it I feel swamped.  I feel like I am surrounded by a thick, dark fog that can only be lifted when the fresh air goes past my face as my feet pound the floor beneath me.

Running is my freedom.

There is a corner of my office which I just feel is unloved and a little wasted. I have thought for a long time that a floor lamp would look great but have never managed to find one that I liked. With this my office and only a small space I also lack in storage in the room and so have also thought about putting a shelving system here.

I stumbled across a light on value lights that combines both storage and a floor lamp. The lamp is available i several colours but a I chose oak to match the rest of the room. There is some assembly required but it is quick and simple to do.

The lamp has a fabric shade and a vintage feel to it, but it fits perfectly in my office. The shelves are great for storing small items, I would be wary of putting anything heavy on them, but this is mainly due to the space available.

Using the corner in this way has given my office a new look and feel, and it feels much brighter. I feel that I have made the best use of the space available and given a great use to an otherwise unused space.

All words are my own opinion

There are some films which we look forward to seeing at the cinema but for different reasons end up missing them.  Capture the flag was one of these films.  Both the girls and I were looking forward to seeing it but unfortunately we were unable to.

Space travel runs in Mike Goldwing's family: both his father and grandfather were astronauts. But the plucky 12-year-old's estranged grandfather, Frank, has lived a life isolated from his family after missing out on the chance to make history as a member of the Apollo 11 crew.

However, when Mike discovers that an eccentric billionaire plans to fly to the moon, claim its vast, valuable mineral resources, and destroy the American flag planted by the Apollo 11 astronauts, the countdown to a spectacular adventure begins! Mike, teamed with his grandfather, best friends Amy and Marty, and a clever chameleon, blasts off on an incredible moon-bound mission, determined to thwart the billionaire's evil plan

Lucky for us Capture the Flag is released on Digital HD on 23rd May, and on Blu-ray and DVD on 30th May 2016 an we have been sent a copy to review.

I am not sure who was more excited to see the film me or the girls?  Either way we decided to make the most of it and have a 'space' themed evening.

The girls did some activity sheets whilst I got the DVD ready to play [Feel free to save and download the activity sheet]

The film was packed full of adventure and the girls found it incredibly funny in parts.  I really enjoyed the film too and so pleased we finally got to see it.  The film lives up to its trailer and is certainly worth watching with the family.

After the film we were inspired to build our very rocket, well how else will we go to the moon?

If you fancy building a rocket you could have a go at this one

We had a fun filled space themed day, and will be going to the moon in our rocket to capture the flag!

When we moved into our new home I had a 2 week old baby and an under 2.  Needless to say unpacking boxes happened very slowly and things got put away, but nothing really got sorted.  Fast forward to the present date and whilst we are still unpacking boxes, it is becoming more evident that we have simply ‘made do’ with the storage space as is.

It would be lovely if we had an infinite pot of money to make the changes we would love to make, but that simply is not the case.  Instead we save and put away for those big projects, like the bathroom and up cycle wherever possible for the smaller projects.  The garden is the main area of focus for us this year.

The girls playhouse was painted when we moved in but the recent stormy weather broke some of the outside panels and caused damage to the roof.  Rather than replace the whole playhouse we managed to salvage some of the wood and source local parts to fix the whole playhouse for under £60.  It just needs some paint and it will look as good as new.

We are also focusing on the playroom, with another baby on the way we are having to re think storage space in the room.  Items need to be accessible for the baby but some items, like glue, need to be kept out of the way.  The way in which we utilise this room is changing and we are looking for creative solutions to make the best out of the room.  If only we had a fairy god mother like Phil Spencer to help!

This is a collaborative post.

A day with my eldest and we took a trip to Magna Science adventure.  Magna is based in an old steel works and the building still has a certain awe to it.  There are 4 main halls situated within the steel works representing each of the elements earth, wind, fire and water.

Magna had a special exhibition of the Red Bull Stratos.  Standing next to the capsule and then watching the jump brought back memories of watching it live.  My eldest held her breath when he jumped.

The dark and cold steel works really added to the atmosphere and gave the suit used for the jump a little extra that I do not think could have been achieved any where else.

My favourite element of Magna was the Fire room, and you can watch the fire tornado over on my Facebook page.  My eldest daughters however was Water.  Magna is very hands on and encourages learning through play, which is exactly what we did.

After all the play inside it was time to make the most of the sunshine and explore outside.  There is a great water park but we had not brought a change of clothes so instead we opted to play on the enormous adventure play ground.

We had a great day exploring the old steel works and playing in the outdoor play area.

This day I love steel and space

Diono are a brand I have admired for some time.  One of my biggest passions is car seats and car seat safety.  Diono encompassed all my passions within their brand.  Their products are world class and the engineer in me has great admiration for them.

I was thrilled to be picked as a Diono family member and to be given the opportunity to test some of the Diono range.  Whilst I have not been asked to write on my blog about the products I wanted to share them.

Ultra Mat Deluxe

My youngest daughter is a little messy and clumsy.  She often spills things in the car and leaves a huge mess.  The Ultra mat deluxe is a mat which fits the shape of the car seat.  You then place the car seat on top.  It has a great feel to it and not only is it non slip it is also very easy to wipe clean, or pick up and shake outside.  The Ultra Mat Deluxe has saved my car seats from some very messy situations.  What makes the Ultra mat deluxe really stand out is it contains a pouch which has a sun shade inside.  This sun shade can be placed over the car seat to stop it getting hot in hot weather.

The Ultra Mat deluxe even leaves adequate room for the isofix points and does not hinder installation of the car seat.

Stow and GO

The stow and go fits to the back of the cars car seat.  I found it a little tricky to attach the bottom straps but eventually figured it out.  There are plenty of pockets to hold most items needed for a car journey and are a great way to organise a car.  Better still they keep the car seat clean from dirty foot prints.

Travel pal

The travel pal fits perfectly on the middle seat of my car.  It gives the girls somewhere to store all the things they need on a car journey, such as books, magazines and treats.  It has two drinks bottles holders on the front, which my youngest struggled to get her drink back into.

There are some great net pockets on the side and inside features a divider with zip pocket.  It is another way to help keep the car organised.

I was having one of those days today, and to be honest I still am.  Feeling a little fed up that I am not seeing any results from running.  My times don't seem to be getting faster and I don't feel any better at the minute.  Feeling frustrated that I cannot figure out why it takes at least 3 hour to get the girls to sleep at night.  Generally just a down day.

With my eldest at school and my youngest shopping with Grandma I took the opportunity to clear my mind and have some thinking space.  I have a need to be outdoors.  I cannot explain it but I just have a need to be outside walking or running.  Especially when I am having one of those days, I like to get outside and just wander.

admiring the views

I think exploring is in me.  That sense of freedom and peace.  There are many places near me just to walk around and think and I feel very lucky for that.

The fresh air did me some good and with views like these I felt more focused.  I think some times we all need to just step away from it all and reflect

This day I love thinking space

I was recently sent the Hotpoint Ovenspace electric single oven to review.  I was looking for an oven the size of a single oven but with a large capacity.  Having always had an electric oven I also wanted to stick with what was familiar.

The Hotpoint Ovenspace electric single oven has a 70l capacity.  In comparison to others this is quite large, yet it has the same dimensions as an electric single oven and so fitted perfectly in the space of the previous oven.  There was nothing complicated about installation, although I would recommend at least two people as it is a little heavy.

It has a beautiful mirrored finish which adds a touch of class into the kitchen.  The majority of controls, including on and off, are touch buttons meaning the oven front is easy to wipe clean.  Upon switching the oven on you hear a beep and the panel illuminates in a soft orange.

I found the panel very user friendly, by using the control to the left I can scroll through menu options.  I like that there is an auto cook function for meat, bread and cakes.  I haven't yet tried these out but love the recipe included in the instruction book for bread.

Other than looking sleek, modern and stylish the Hotpoint ovenspace electric single oven is rather clever.  It features a rather clever divider.

The divider allows you to separate the oven into two, creating two smaller cooking spaces.  You can choose to cook with or without the divider in place.  This means you save on heating the whole oven, if you only wanted to cook one dish.  This saves time, for pre heating, and also money.  The divider is much smarter than this.  It also prevents smells crossing it.  This means you can cook both a savoury dish and a desert at the same time.  Each section within the divider can be set to different temperatures.  Which means no more waiting for one thing to cook before cooking the next.

There are also some great safety features including audible beeps to alert when switched on, and if the divider unit is in place.  The trays feature grooves so that they do not keep sliding and fall out the oven, there is a gentle lift to them.

I have been really impressed with the Hotpoint Ovenspace Electric single oven.  It not only looks fantastic but in my opinion is fantastic.  I am still trying to figure out how they can make a single oven do so much without taking up more space.

Whilst I was sent a Hotpoint Ovenspace to review, all words and opinions are my own.
