This day I love.......

We were invited to attend a swimming lesson with Lilypad swim.

My two girls started swimming when they were a few years old. My eldest never liked swimming under water but now at 9 years old she is a complete fish. My youngest daughter has no fear and never has, and that was one of the reasons I started swimming with her from such a young age so I could teach her water safety. Unfortunately Little Man had to fit in with his sisters routines and so baby swimming just didn’t happen.

I was worried about how he would take to swimming having not had the same start the girls had. In fact when I did get round to researching baby swimming near us I struggled to find a class that would work. Fast forward to the age of 3 and I appear to have another fish on my hands. In fact you wouldn’t know he has only just started lessons.

A private pool based in Penistone [and not the one everyone thinks of when you think of the private pool in Penistone], in fact this pool is rather new and modern. At least it appeared so. My Sat Nav went a little silly and took us on to a housing estate, instead we had to travel just a little further up the hill and the pool was on our left. Plenty of parking spaces near to the private pool and we we entered a very modern looking building.

We needed to remove our shoes before entering the changing area, which is next to the pool and after getting changed it was time to swim. The pool does have a shallow and a deep end and so I had to be aware of the slope given I am only small. Little Man was happy with the water temperature and the small class size meant he relaxed and didn’t go shy.

Our teacher Helen introduced herself and the structure of the lesson before we began and it was a warm welcome. Little Man was eager to show of his swimming skills and started kicking his legs and splashing his feet. The smile on his face stayed there throughout and the lesson was tailored to meet the needs of each individual in the class.

Little Man had no hesitation in joining in. Happily pouring the water over his hair to wash it, swimming under arches and pretending to ride his horse. He had lots of fun and simply didn’t want to get out the water.

Lilypad swim caters for all ages, offering baby swimming lessons right up to teaching adults to swim. Classes are kept small in size which I really like as it feels much more personal and classes are available at a variety of times to suit those that might only be able to make it after school for example.

Had I found Lilypad swim when Little Man was a baby I can safely say that he would have had swimming lessons from a few weeks old too just like his sisters. Oh and if you are worried about your baby swimming under water there is absolutely no need to be. Classes are very personal and there was no pressure whatsoever, the whole class was very relaxed and we were made to feel very welcome. Thank you for inviting us to swim with you.

When both girls were 6 weeks old I took them to swimming lessons. Both have had very different experiences. My youngest daughter has unbelievable confidence in the water, absolutely no fear and would happily jump in or dive underwater. My eldest daughter is confident in the water but up until very recently would not jump in or put her face in the water.

It goes to show that even with the same lessons every child is different but what both of my girls learnt from an early age was pool and water safety. They learnt what to do if they fell in the water, and how to be sensible and not run when it is wet.

For a variety of reasons Little Man has never had formal swimming lessons, but I have taken him to the pool and shown him the same safety techniques his sisters learnt. It does make me a little sad that I wasn't able to take Little Man swimming lessons, but we have still spent the same quality time together in the water.

Olympic swimmer Rebecca Addlington has teamed up with Baby Annabell – the UK’s number one selling large doll brand – to launch the new Baby Annabell learn to swim doll and give her top tips for encouraging Little ones to swim

- Children can be initially nervous of the water, baby steps and lots of praise will help them overcome a lack of confidence. Try taking them alone to just watch for the first time, then toes in next time and so on, along with lots of positive praise to help encourage them to take that first dip.

- Toys are a brilliant tool, they are such a good distraction for anyone who doesn’t normally like putting their face in the water or splashing. Toys such as the new Baby Annabell Learns to Swim doll are a great way to give children (and parents!) the courage to take those first steps towards swimming.

- Swimming is huge bonding experience. The learning process is a lot to do with trust and really builds a closer relationship between and parent and child. For this reason, try not to use your phone during lessons to avoid distractions.

- The younger you start swimming lessons the better. I took Summer from 3 weeks old. It is all about building confidence and awareness of the water from a young age. Swimming also helps with a child’s muscular development and is fantastic for understanding their physical abilities.

- Make good use of the equipment that’s there. Whether it’s armbands, noodles, or vests, use whatever your child is more comfortable with. I tend to do five minutes with flotation equipment and five without, this helps when they’re really young and still building confidence.

- Mix up who takes the child swimming. Whether its Mum, Dad, Grandparents etc. It’s good to go with someone they trust whilst getting used to swimming with different people

Baby Annabell learns to swim moves her arms and legs in the water and even floats on her back. First though water safety is important and my youngest had to inflate Baby Annabell's arm bands!

Baby Annabell loved swimming in the bath, and even made friends with Little Man.

After her bath it was time to get dry with her very own fluffy towel.

It is safe to say Baby Annabell is well looked after. The girls love that they finally have a doll they can take in the bath with them, and one that swims too!

Baby Annabell was sent for review. All words are my own opinion

Little Man loves water.  I had wanted to start swimming with him as I had with the girls from 6 weeks, but seemingly when it is your third child and you have two other children to organise it takes some time before you find swimming lessons to fit in with your other children and their time table.

Little Man however was very excited, kitted out in his new Konfidence swim wear we were ready to go.  first however he got distracted by the lockers and went to investigate.  His Konfidence swim wear did not restrict his movement whilst dry and he easily cruised along the lockers to investigate the keys hanging from them.

Little Man had the clown fish print for all his swimming gear, as I liked the pattern but there was plenty of choice including simple colours if you wished.  His Babywarma swimsuit was easy to get on and off and I could do so whilst he was standing up.  It wraps and fastens round him with velcro, and should I have needed to I could change his nappy without having to remove the whole suit.  When I took his suit off him to get dressed the water that came from him was lovely and warm, I know therefore he was warm in the pool.

The second we did get out the water he became interested once again in the lockers and he had no problems walking across to investigate even in wet swim gear.

In addition to his Babywarma swimsuit he also wore a Neo Nappy, which are compulsory in swim schools.  This over the top Neoprene nappy was one I was familiar with and can remember the girls wearing, it is designed to stop those unfortunate accidents in the water and is worn over the top of a swim nappy.  With the girls I had to search everywhere to find a reusable swim nappy, as I felt it such a waste to throw a nappy away after 30 minutes in the water.  Konfidence now have a reusable swim nappy and to make it even better it is a one size fits all option! [3 months to 30 months]

The AquaNappy has adjustable poppers and Velcros at the side, so you can adjust to fit your child.  Little Man seemed to enjoy wandering off in his as I tried desperately to get him dressed.  There was no need to add any inserts to it so it is ready to go straight from the packet and it can even be washed in the washing machine.

Little Man found it easy to move through the water and out of the water when both wet and dry! Even after several washes his kit still looks as good as new, which makes me really happy too!  We love going swimming together it is a great time for us to bond and after he usually has a big nap too!  His Konfidence kit is sure to last him for some time yet, which makes it great value for money, and I have to say I love the bright colours and patterns.

Thanks to Konfidence for sending the items mentioned in exchange for this post

Every week the girls have swimming lessons, and due to their different abilities they are in different classes.  This means that I have to keep each girl occupied whilst their sister swims.  If I could fit in my costume, I would probably take the opportunity to be in the big pool with them, whilst the other has their lesson in the teaching pool.  As it stands though, this is not an option

Half hour may not seem like a long time, but when you are three years old and there is nothing to do, other than watch the general public swim or stare at the vending machine, you get bored very quickly.  We are not allowed to watch the lessons, as it distracts the others in the class, so we just sit and wait.
With my eldest we often take the opportunity to read a book, do school homework or practise spellings, but it is more difficult to occupy my youngest.  That is until I discovered busy bags from All about party bags.  These bags are intended to keep children busy at weddings, or events or even to be used as party or gift bags but they are great at entertaining children any where.

As my girls are very different in their tastes and what will keep them busy, I ordered two very different bags.  There are nearly 300 bags to choose from, so there is bound to be something to suit each individuals taste and every budget.

I have to admit to thinking they would make great party bags, and am tempted to order some for the girls parties.  The bags are great value, and are packed full of different items.  My youngest was incredibly pleased with her bag and it certainly kept her entertained whilst we waited for her sister.

I think the busy bags would also come in very handy on journeys, either car, train or plane.  They would be a great gift to give to a child before the journey and they could have excitement at opening the gift and then using the busy bag throughout the journey.  As you can choose your bag you could pick items suitable for the journey, or even with a theme related to the destination.

Our busy Bag has been put back into the swimming bag ready for next week.  Busy Bag from All about party bags, certainly are a great way to keep little ones entertained.

The girls were sent a bag each for the purpose of this review.  All words are my own opinion.

We have recently returned for an amazing holiday in the Algarve.  Whilst there we stayed in a James Villa and although we could have spent the entire week by the poolside in the villa we opted to explore and make the most of our time in Portugal.  I have to admit that Portugal has stolen a little bit of my heart and I would love to go back there.

I wanted to capture a few of the activities we did whilst we were there that the kids enjoyed.

1. Visit the Marina at Lagos

It may not seem an obvious place to take children but there was so much to see and do.  The girls would have happily watched the boats in the marina.  We had a walk around the marina and opposite the marina is a lovely shopping area with plenty of restaurants and shops to visit.

2. Zoomarine

We spent one day at Zoomarine but it was not enough.  The park has two very distinct areas the first is animals.  Here there are dolphin shows, seal shows, parrot shows and a 3D animated movie.  We didn't have time for the movie.  There is also an aquarium and mini funfair.  There were plenty of rides for the girls to go on at 3 and 4, and they thoroughly enjoyed the shows.

The second part of Zoomarine is the beach and water park.  If we had known we would have taken swimming things.  The beach area was fantastic and the girls spent a good hour playing in the sand.  There were only a few slides but more than enough to keep the girls entertained and a few for older children too.  If we had had more time we would have certainly gone back and it was worth the visit.

3. Slide and Splash

When we visited in May/June the water was a little chilly.  It was also very quiet.  There is a large grassed area that we could put our towels on to sit, however we could imagine during peak season it could get busy.  The park was easily laid out with plenty to keep any age occupied.  The children's area had lots of slides and adventure equipment to play on and although they were too small to go on most of the slides they could go on the odd one or two.  We spent a full day and could have easily gone back for a second visit.

4. Ice cream at Praia da Luz

The ice cream factory is in a little shop on your right as you walk down the road towards the beach.  The staff were so friendly and welcoming and spoke to us in English.  We went past later and heard them speaking French, German and Spanish.  The staff clearly make their customers feel welcome.  Serving a wide variety of home made ice creams, we could not believe the choice.  Delicious and refreshing.  Perfect for sitting on the beach with.

5. Beach

Portugal has lots of amazing beaches and we spent a whole day there.  Our favourite was the one at Praia da Luz as it appeared to be very family friendly.  Toilets near by and lots of places to eat.  The girls loved it and there were plenty of rock pools to explore too

I received a very important phone call this week. My youngest daughter has finally secured a place at our local swimming school. She has had her name down on the waiting list for two years and so it was a real jump for joy moment when they said she could start swimming.

My youngest is completely obsessed with water and her favourite past time is playing in water. That can be anything from pouring water between cups, to washing up or having a bath. If she can play with water she is really happy. It was clear from an early age her love of water, as we used to do baby swimming, and I am so happy the next chapter is about to start.

To help her with her swimming I have been kitting her out with the same things her sister has and have used the online store the swim shop. Goggles, arm bands for when she is with me, fun fish shape floats, games to play in the water, swimming hats and costumes. I have got water toys, beach balls and things that sink. Cups to scoop water and squirrels to chase. All of these things for my daughter who loves water.

It is safe to say I am very exited for her to start swimming lessons and cannot wait to share these adventures.

My eldest wants to have hair like Rapunzel, I am probably guessing most 4 year old girls do too. One of the big problems we have is as her hair grows longer is the amount of water it holds after swimming lessons. The backs of her clothes are often wet through by the time we get home, as no matter how much I try I cannot dry her hair.

We have started using the cuddle dry twist after her swimming lessons. This clever little towel goes onto your head, like a hood. The back then twists up and into a special loop on the top of your head. This holds the towel into place. The cuddle dry twist then keeps all the wet hair away from her body whilst she gets dry and gets dressed. The other advantage is I then also have a dedicated towel for drying her hair after swimming which is super absorbent and super soft.

The cuddle dry twist is perfect for helping my daughter to dry her hair and keep wet hair out of the way whilst she gets ready. Easy to use and small enough to not take up much room in an already packed swimming bag.

The cuddle dry twist was sent to us for review.  All words are my own opinion

Sunday

beautiful muddy faceMy youngest is rather accident prone.  We had taken a walk round the country park with the dogs, my youngest tripped over her own feet and fell face first into the first muddy puddle.  She was covered in mud.  We had a cuddle and a giggle and she soon ran off playing again.

Monday

testing body washMy eldest is trying some new wash for her eczema and after swimming seemed a great time to give it a go

Tuesday

admiring the viewI needed to clear my head and get some thinking space.  I took the dogs on a walk and it was just lovely to admire the views.

Wednesday

Soft play rope bridgeI needed to make it up to the girls after such a rubbish week so far.  I took my youngest to do something she would love, soft play.  It was actually really therapeutic and lovely to hear her giggling and having fun.  This photo reminds me of a silent Sunday from back in October 2013

Thursday

Late night in the carIt was another really busy day today.  I had meetings with clients all day which all ran over.  Really good meetings and fingers crossed they both happen as it would be amazing.  As a result the only picture I managed was of my eldest in the car as we went to pick up her sister from nursery

OK I know it's taken me a long time to write this, we went on our Disney cruise back in June but I wanted to take my time and get it right. I have already written my tips for first time cruisers and about all the places we visited on our cruise, this post will look specifically at our experience on the Disney magic part of the Disney cruise line (DCL).

First impressions on the Disney magic was wow. We were welcomed aboard and announced over the microphone with members of crew clapping as we got on board. This gave you the all star welcome and feeling. The main deck was simply beautiful. Stunning elevators, statues and huge porthole windows to look through. With marble floors and chandeliers, you would be forgiven if you thought you were in a top class hotel.

Our rooms were not ready until a little later but we were allowed to visit the ship and use any facilities on board. The girls put on their costumes and went into the pool.

Swimming

There was a separate area just for adults which we did not go into. I understand the pool and spa here were lovely but as we did not use them or see them I could not comment.

The main pool is right in front of tunnel vision. This was were a variety of Disney films were shown. Children (and adults) could sit in the pool and watch films such as monsters inc, toy story, and other Disney classics. I thought this was really lovely. The pool was kept really clean and there were plenty of chairs and seating around.

The kids pool was simply fantastic. My girls would have spent all their time in here. There was buckets to pull, water guns to squirt, a pool to sit in, simply fantastic. All Disney themed of course but so much fun for them. There was even a small area for babies.

A well as swimming pool there were two slides, but the girls were too small to try these out. The did look fun with one hanging over the edge of the boat.

Food and drink

I could not believe that everything was included. You have 24hr access to drinks machine serving both hot and cold drinks, including water. The buffet bar seemed to be open all the time too but I'm guessing it closed at some point. On deck near the pools was every take away you could imagine and yes it's all included and you could eat whatever you wanted. There was an area that even did sandwiches and fruit if you fancied a lighter option.

Breakfast you could choose to eat either in the restaurant or have a buffet. Not mornings we had a buffet before getting off the ship. There was plenty of choice and something for every diet and taste. Most lunches we had off ship sampling local cuisine but again if on board you could choose the buffet or one of the takeaways.

Dinner was something spectacular. There were 3 restaurants we dined in and each had a different theme. Lumière was set out like beauty and the beast, with the tea cups just like belles.

Carioca was more colourful and wasn't our favourite to dine in but it was still great food. Our favourite by far was animators palace. Here drawings came to life before your very eyes. It was a truly magical dining experience and whilst I don't want to give too much away it was fantastic.

Activities and leisure

There was plenty to do on board. A whole deck dedicated to sports, with a basketball court, table football and ping pong. A running track went round the ship which you could choose to walk around if you wish. Swimming pools and a spa. Not to mention the kids club. There was evening entertainment including bingo, quiz shows and variety of shows.

On board was a cinema showing latest releases and also a theatre. The shows in the theatre are award winning and simply stunning, like watching a Broadway musical without having to pay any extra for it. The one thing I loved was everything was family friendly. The shows are shown twice so it doesn't matter which dinner sitting you are on you can still catch one of the shows. There are no casino or gambling on board.

Accommodation

I had heard that cruise line rooms are really small. We stayed in an ocean view room, but on one of the lowest decks. The room prices rise the higher up the boat you go. The room was plenty big enough for all four of us, we never felt squashed in.

There was two bathrooms and one had both a bath and a shower. Everything was kept clean and tidy and the girls loved the surprise of finding out what room service had made with the towels that evening.

We were very well taken care of during our Disney cruise. The girls loved the excitement of waking up and seeing the characters around the ship. They loved Peter Pan running around looking for tinker bell, or randomly passing one of the Disney princess on one of the decks. They loved the opportunity to dance with the characters, how many people can say they have danced to let it go with Mickey and Minnie Mouse?

I cannot recommend Disney cruise line enough, the experience was amazing. We were made to feel really special and the girls have some fantastic memories. We will be going back again.

I have not been asked to write this post, this is a holiday we paid for and have received no compensation to write about
