This day I love.......

Keeping your household bills down is a top priority for most families and for ours. Getting more for less keeps everybody happy. Making your home, more energy efficient is the easiest and most effective way of keeping household bills to a minimum. Do you know how to make a more energy efficient home? I've scoured hundreds of websites, and these seem to be the most common ways of achieving it. Some are large installations, and others are small things you can do daily.

Turn everything off

It seems like quite an obvious point, but I bet you've left that bathroom light on more than once, my youngest is forever forgetting to turn it off. Simple things like turning all the lights off before you go to bed can make a huge difference in your energy usage. Modern family homes are full of computers, televisions, phones and sound systems. Ensure that everything is switched off and even unplugged if it’s not in use. Putting an electronic device on standby does not stop it from using energy.

Double glazing

Making sure your windows are up to scratch will keep the cold out and the heat in. Installing multiple panes onto your windows is the best way to do this. If you live in an older house, check for cracks and wear and tear around your window frames. This is another way your home can lose heat, so get them filled in as soon as possible. You can also buy more energy efficient window frames.

Replace old appliances

Appliances that haven’t worked properly for a while need to be replaced. Look for appliances with the Energy star certified symbol. This will give you confidence in knowing you are buying a top quality energy saving product. Go online and research for price comparisons on appliances, just always look for the energy star symbol. It may cost a lot to begin with but in the long term you will be saving yourself money.

Changing your lighting

Simple tasks such as changing which bulbs you use is another great method. Energy saving light bulbs will last much longer than normal bulbs. They may cost more to begin with, but if you place them in frequently used rooms, it will mean a considerable difference to your overall usage. Thus saving you money in the long run.

Energy Rates

Again you will need to do some research for the best energy rates for your family. All the energy companies will be trying to convince you that their deal is the best on the market. Always read the small print and find a deal that ticks all the boxes when it comes to conserving the most energy. You could even look at alternative techniques, such as collective switching. You can find out more about that at Gocollective.

If you implement just one or two of these ideas, your home will become more energy efficient in no time. Imagine how efficient it would be if you implemented them all. These ideas will not only sort out how you use your energy, but it will also be kinder to your bank balance and help the environment.

A few weeks ago I took part in a twitter party talking about allergies and cleaning.  I was really interested to know more about how I could clean the house more effectively and remove any allergens.  I have an allergy to grass pollen, as well as other things and with my daughters eczema triggered by dust this was a topic of great interest to me.

As well as some great tips, e-cloth was mentioned quite a few times.  I was keen to try as the conversation highlighted how easy and effective e-cloth are to use.  E-cloth do not contain chemicals and only need water to clean.  Research conducted by Silliker also shows that e-cloth removes over 99% of bacteria and when rinsed under warm water only 0.01% of bacteria was reintroduced to a sterile surface.

I was keen to give them a try and started with the window cleaning cloths.  My girls have a lovely habit of putting sticky chocolate fingers on clean patio glass.  I absolutely hate cleaning glass, it can often be time consuming and leave streaks.  A quick solution would be fantastic.

I followed the instructions on e-cloth and wiped the window down with the wet cleaning cloth, then finished with the dry cloth.  I was amazed at how quick it was to clean the window and how the window was streak free.

e-cloth cleaning cloths

e-cloth provided a quick and easy solution to cleaning without the need for chemicals.

E-cloth has a range of products and I have even tried the polishing cloth, which was great for shining the chrome plug sockets.  I would love to try the mop as I have wooden and laminate floors for most of the house and I think it would be a great way to keep allergens under control.

I have often wondered how good these cloths really are, I have seen lots of different brands.  What makes e-cloth different is they come with a 3 year guarantee and because they are manufactured to a higher quality than other brands they are endorsed by companies such as AGA, Bosch, Electrolux, Smeg and Allergy Uk.

I have been impressed with the cleaning ability of e-cloth.  I have managed to reduce the time it takes to clean the house giving me more time with the girls.  As e-cloth uses only water I am no longer purchasing as many cleaning products, which means I have reduced my monthly spend and I feel that I am also helping my daughter by cleaning without using chemicals.

We were sent e-cloth the review, all words and opinions are my own.

My girls love outside.  If they cant go outside then they love to watch outside.  My eldest in particular loves watching the birds in the garden.  The big Oak tree comes right past her window and we have such a good view into the tree to watch the birds and wildlife its amazing.  I imagine its similar to having a tree house, only warmer.

We had spent some of the evening watching the birds outside.  Whilst getting my youngest ready for bed I noticed my eldest wander past the door carrying her step.  In my curious I wonder what she is up to mode I followed her into her room.  She carefully placed the step by the window and proceeded to attempt to climb up onto the windowsill.  She put her foot onto the radiator and tried to pull herself up.  She the turned looked at me and said 'Radiator not big enough Mummy' Which I think means she was not quite high enough to get up.

trying to see outside using a step and radiator

I can see I am going to be having a lot of fun watching what she gets up to from now on.  Luckily the girls are never upstairs unattended and the windows are locked.  I did explain it was dangerous and she must wait for Mummy or Daddy to look out the window.  We did then have a look outside.  Where we saw a squirrel and a pigeon on the roof of the play house.  [Please excuse the poor quality photo, zoom on phone and light shinning in has made it go a bit weird and I cannot work out how to edit it to make it better]

They proceeded to do a bit of strange dancing round each other, I would guess in a back off the foods mine kind of way.  In the end one of them got fed up and went away, Can you guess which?

This day I love the squirrel vs the Pigeon

When I first heard of the Kärcher Window Vac, I was a little unsure what it was and what it could do.  It arrived with a very thick instruction booklet and to be honest I was a little worried.  I need not have been, as the instruction booklet only had 3 pages in English the rest was other languages, and one of those pages is a picture showing parts.

The Kärcher Window Vac, was very easy to assemble, simply click the wiper onto the body, charge the unit and you are ready to go.  One charge was enough to get round the windows in our conservatory, average sized conservatory

You maybe wondering what the Kärcher Window Vac is.  Well to put it simply it sucks up water from a smooth surface.  Except it does a little more than that.  I found it really useful to clean windows.  I would wet a cloth and wash down the window. then use the Kärcher Window Vac, to wipe away all the water.  The suction mechanism takes away all the water, meaning it leaves surface bone dry and streak free.  It takes less time than conventional drying with a cloth and leaves much better results.

The Kärcher Window Vac is the first of its kind and works well on other surfaces including mirrors, shower screens and hard flat surfaces.  I think it would be particularly useful on a car.  After washing the car use the Kärcher Window Vac to remove the excess water leaving a streak free bone dry finish.  Better than drying with lots of cloths and certainly a lot easier.

Kärcher Window Vac

One other use I did with the Kärcher Window Vac is to clean up spills.  My eldest daughter is often spilling her water and I used the Kärcher Window Vac to suck up the spillage from the wooden floor.  It worked really well.

I have one small downside with the Kärcher Window Vac and that is the size of the wiper.  Although it is great for large surfaces such as windows or patio doors, it is not great for smaller panes of glass such as those found on an internal door.  It is also not suitable if the glass window was circular, for example, as the blade would not be able to move to create a streak free shine.  Perhaps additional blades should be made available to cope with different shape and sized window.

Kärcher Window Vac is overall very light weight and easy to use and gives the best possible results in window cleaning.  I think this would also make an excellent Fathers Day gift and had my Dad not gone out and purchased one I would have got him one.
