When the UK's four biggest broadband providers, BT, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, join forces to create an online space for parents to navigate the Internet safely with their children, the project is surely set to become a household name. Internet Matters is this place.
Internet Matters features some great ideas of how to navigate the Internet safely, from 0 to teens and is split into helpful age group guides. There are sections on how to cope with the negative side of the Internet, as well as technologies available. The aim of Internet Matters is to Learn about it, talk about it and deal with it.
As a parent to two young girls I see how much technology has already made an impact on their lives. They recently were exposed to a non touch screen laptop and the first thing they both did was swipe the screen with their finger. Then pinch to try and expand and zoom the screen, before declaring it not working. At the ages of 3 and 2, this shows me that technology is a big part of their lives.
I do worry about the sites they can access, or even their online presence, especially as I blog about their lives. I am glad to know I am not alone as research by Internet Matters shows that 74% of parents want more information and advice about online safety and 48% would prefer this information to be available online. Internet matters provides this one stop hub for help, pulling together leading experts, charities and organisations. The idea is to allow parents to make an informed decisions and not to scare parents.
I personally really like Internet Matters and have already picked up a few good tips of making the Internet safer for my 3 year old.
