This day I love.......

Last week we were kindly invited to Gamezstation 6th birthday party. For transparency purposes I haven’t been asked or paid to write anything but we had such a good time I wanted to share our experience.

Gamezstation was started in 2013 by Scott and Kirsty Deighton and is a mobile gaming party. They have two vans, named Mario and Vinnie, and each are kitted out with 12 gaming seats and 6 consoles. Gamezstation takes their gaming vans to locations within a 65 mile radius of Leeds and are perfect for a range of events, including birthday parties, summer fairs and corporate event days. You can hire either one or both vans.

During the birthday party the girls and Little Man got to experience the vans. Little Man loved playing Mario Kart, my youngest daughter played Marvel and my eldest daughter Minecraft. We had other people playing a variety of other games too, which was great that they could all play something different whilst sitting on the same van.

In fact, I struggled to get them out of the van. They loved the choice of games, the comfy gaming seats and the lighting in the van too. All the three of them were enjoying themselves.I decided we should see the rest of the celebrations and so we headed inside. We were greeted with retro consoles, the girls did not seem impressed but I had childhood flashbacks as I played Mario Kart on the SNES.

At the back of the room we met the charity TheRockinR. They are an absolutely fantastic charity. Founded by the father of late games- lover 10 year old Reece who sadly passed away from a brain tumour. The charity bring mobile gaming units to those children and young people who are in hospital or hospices or those who may be immobile or have limited access to activities. It helps to provide some normality in an otherwise difficult situation.

We took part in the balloon pop raffle which raised over £1000 for TheRockinR and managed to win a controller and some branded clothing. The girls were a little disappointed they didn’t win the signed Leeds Utd shirt, who happen to have a GamesPod in their family stand, but over the moon with the controller win.

It was time for pizza from the catering van and to listen to the speeches with birthday cake. Well you can’t have  a party without the cake. No one wanted to leave, they wanted to play some more games and so that’s exactly what we did staying right until the end of the evening.

Gamezstation could not have been more welcoming and put on a great party. The girls loved the gaming vans and have both now decided that is exactly what they want for their parties next year. I have to agree it was a rather fun evening!

I cannot believe that in a weeks time my eldest daughter starts junior school!  I can remember junior school.  Everything from lessons to the teachers and the games we played.  I was one of the eldest in my class but my eldest daughter is one of the youngest and celebrates her birthday in the school holidays.  As the majority of her friends are away we always try and go out for the day to somewhere a bit special and this year we went to Nottingham to see Paw Patrol Live.

It is rare that I can find something that keeps all 3 of my children entertained at the same time, but Paw Patrol Live managed this.  My youngest daughter at 5 is Paw Patrol obsessed so she was shouting and cheering along with the story.  Her face at the interval was an absolute picture, both out of excitement for the rest of the story and her processing how the first part of the story unfolded.  My eldest was enjoying the story line and the fact it was her birthday.  She was joining in and cheering.  The show was incredibly engaging and had lots of moments for the audience to participate in, I felt the show went rather quickly and it no where near felt as long as it should have.

Little Man was completely engrossed.  For a child that refuses to watch TV, unless it is a game show, I was remarkably impressed.

All 3 of my children left with huge smiles on their faces after a really amazing performance.  It was onward after the arena to a Paw Patrol surprise party for my eldest daughter.

She had no idea we had planned a surprise for her afterwards.  We had put up paw patrol bunting and decorated the main table with paw patrol decorations and table cloth.  There were dog themed cup cakes and treats, as well as Paw Patrol table ware.

Everything we needed for a perfect Paw Patrol surprise party.  We even had Paw Patrol goodies in our party bags, which of course were Paw Patrol themed.  All our Paw Patrol party supplies had been sent from Party Delights.

My eldest had the perfect Paw Patrol birthday, with everything from watching them live to a surprise themed party.  What more could she have asked for?

With thanks to Party delights for sending the party supplies and to Paw Patrol Live for sending us tickets so she could see the show.

Yesterday we went on a Bear hunt,  we might have been just a little bit scared but we had lots of fun.  everything was set up whilst the children were at school, and they came home to discover a surprise waiting for them.  Popcorn, games to play and We're going on a Bear hunt DVD to watch.  My girls and their friends settled down to watch the DVD and eat popcorn!

I had also set up another table with fun activities to do after we had watched the DVD.

You can read our review of the DVD here but all our guests certainly enjoyed watching, we kept the DVD on look throughout the evening and even had the bear watching with us.

After watching the DVD we had a quiz to see what we could remember.  I loved this as my youngest is obsessed with peanut butter and so any answer she could think of that is what she would write.  She did her own sounding out too!

It was time to go on a real bear hunt!  First though we made some ears, before hunting for bears.  We all looked high and low and within 1 minute everything had been found.  I must learn to hide them better!

Having completed our bear hunt it was time to pin the tail on the bear.  I think there was some cheating happening as on quite a few occasions the tail ended up in the right place.  Everyone found this really funny so we played a few times.

It was time for food, we had played all our party games and were ready for something to eat.  As a treat for after dinner we made special bear biscuits.

Our bear party seemed to go past really quickly.  All our guests had an amazing fun time, and we loved watching the DVD together.

we were party hosts and received the items shown as part of the party.

We had been invited a few weeks ago to a Num Noms event with Bella Italia.  The date for the event was moved and fell on my daughters birthday.  I asked her what she wanted to do, if she wanted to stay with our original plans of having her friends to play for the day, or to go to the Num Noms event.  She chose to go to the event.

My eldest daughter was incredibly excited as I gathered her, her sister and three of their friends into the car.  I on the other hand was a little apprehensive of the prospect of looking after 6 children all day.  As it was her birthday I put all this to one side and braved the day.

The event was a perfect day for my eldest daughter, with face painting Num Noms style

Creating your own pizza and of course eating it for lunch.  Followed by a pink princess cake complete with crown!

Everyone joined in the celebrations and sang happy birthday to my daughter.  It really made her day and this was the first thing she told her Dad when he came home from work.  After cake there could only be one option, ice cream!  The huge selection seemed to have everyone mesmerised

Two hours seemed to simply fly past and it was not long before it was time to go home.  Unfortunately my youngest daughter was not too keen on this idea as she was having too much fun!

This day I love Double celebrations.

It was a rather wet and cold Saturday morning when the postman delivered us a rather exciting parcel.  Maya the Bee had landed on our doorstep with a huge range of goodies for the girls.  Enough to brighten up the darkest of days!

We decided therefore to have a Maya the Bee DVD evening on Sunday as a way to brighten up the miserable weekend.  The girls were very excited and settled down to watch the DVD with their Bee headbands and Maya the Bee teddy bears at the ready.

The girls soon got into the film and had plenty of smiles and giggles during the film, I am sure the popcorn treat helped too

As Maya set off on her unBEElievable adventure with her friend Willy the girls began asking questions which showed they had a lot of interest in the film.

The hornets and the greedy Queen's advisor had them shouting at the TV and we had a few shouts of meanie!

Both girls seemed to really love the film though and have even asked if they can watch it again but this time wear their bee costumes!

Maya the Bee is available to own on DVD and Digital download from the 8th February.  Both girls really loved watching the film and we cannot wait to watch it again.  Great family entertainment.

Maverick books are set to have a very exciting year. They have recently launched their storytellers scheme and whilst I have not been asked to write about it, I think the scheme is fantastic and wanted to share. As you know we have a real passion for reading and a scheme which helps to promote the magical world that books can open up is one which needs to be shared. I may look into joining the scheme after Thing 3 arrives and more details can be found here.

January has also seen 3 books published.

Maverick January books

The first is Hopping Hot which is the third book in the Hedgehugs series. The girls are already familiar with this series and have loved all the Hedgehugs books to date, Thing 3 also has the hard book books ready for them to join in the fun. Hoppin hot follows the story of Hattie and Horace who are the best of friends and want to hop.

Strictly no crocs is by debut author Heather Pindar. It sees the crocodiles not receiving an invite to the party. They come up with a clever plan but will they see it through? The illustrations in this book are by Susan Batori and remind me of Quentin Blake's style of illustrating. They are fun and quirky characters who add real humour to the story. The girls find the story rather funny and it is a nice quick easy read for those nights when you want an enjoyable fun story.

The third book is Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip.  This is the girls favourite of the 3 books and one which has really inspired their imagination.  As a result they have both been busy building Oojamaflips out of random boxes and materials they can find.  I love books which inspire this amount of thinking in children and also ones which encourage them to be active or take an interest in a subject like science.

Three really wonderful books and something for everyone.  Thank you for sending them Maverick books, we love them.

Fulfilling the family's needs in the best way can be challenging. When you are a working parent and still try managing some time to yourself, the balance can be delicate to handle. Nevertheless, it is absolutely worthwhile. Days go by completing task after task and no minute is left to be bored.

When the unexpected happens or when we have to plan for a big occasion, it can be often tricky to manage our time effectively.  We are all busy, but adding an extra element in the mix can sometimes upset the delicate, well balanced routine,

ready for the party

Sometimes you are in need of a little gift inspiration to choose the perfect present and this therefore requires some thought. The best way to sort this out quickly is to think about who we will be buying the gift for. Recalling some personal details that also connect that person to us will be useful. Deciding then for a smart, personable gift rather than a random one, is always the best choice. It is always preferable to pick a small, tailored gift instead of a bigger, foregone one that could easily become a duplicate.

This would also be a good time to decide if you really have nothing appropriate to wear for the occasion and make a brief stop to your favourite clothes shop to pick up a new fabulous outfit.  Remember to keep it simple and elegant. Choose something comfortable since you will probably be running around, chasing the kids, like a mini-dress/leggings combo, opting for neutral colours like black, cream and burgundy to give it a classy twist. If the special occasion is a simple, casual dinner you could decide to wear the leggings with an oversize, monochrome sweater. Finish the look with a pair of mid-heeled boots, in order to be smart looking while still totally at ease!

After sorting the present and your outfit it is then time to sort the card, something I always forget and leave until the last minute.  I always think it is lovely to receive a handmade or personalised card, but this cannot be done at the last minute.  Now the children are a little older they take responsibility for writing out the cards, which means I can get on with wrapping the presents.

Another nice idea to have on these occasions is to send some flowers to your host. This could also back you up in case some family issue prevents you from going to the party at the last minute. It is always an appreciated gesture and it will set you apart from everyone else with a touch of class. With such a tight schedule the best thing would be to visit a flower delivery site offering same-day delivery service. Such sites display a variety of bouquets for you to choose effortlessly from home.

Once everything is sorted the next step is dressing the kids.  Dress them accordingly to the situation but remember they will be playing with the other kids. Pants, shirts, and fashionable trainers are always the best choice for them to enjoy.  Once they are up and ready it will be time for you and your partner to get dressed. You might want to have an entertaining but short activity for your kids to keep busy while you are getting ready or alternatively one of you gets ready whilst the other gets the kids ready.  That way you each take it in turn to entertain the children whilst the other is getting ready.

Decide, according to the event you will be going to, if the kids should have their dinner at home or if they will be fine dining with you at the party. Sometimes kids don't like the buffet foods grownups are so fond of, so getting something in their tummy before you go is always a good idea.

I think the first week of this New Year has been quite tough on us all.  It is difficult getting back into a routine, the 6am starts accompanied with the dark and cold mornings are simply not helping.  My youngest comes home from school and spends the afternoon cuddled up with me on the sofa.  She is simply too tired to do anything else.  My eldest comes home from school and pretty much does the same thing.

We then have over tiredness at bedtime, which results in both girls not wanting to sleep and it taking a long time before either of them falls to sleep.  The week is then one vicious cycle of tiredness, with nothing much achieved.

Youngest at bed time

A relaxing weekend would have been want we all needed, to refresh and recharge.  Unfortunately the girls had 3 parties to go to between them on Saturday.  I am not complaining they had parties, far from it as I love they have lots of friends.  Rather that we could have done with a lie in and a lazy Saturday.

Sunday saw my youngest attend another birthday party and once again a busy rushing around morning.  After the party we made the most of the dry Winters day and spent time exploring the garden.

eldest in the winter sun

The girls made the most of the time in the garden, making mud pies and playing on the swings.  The winter sun seemed to spark something in J as he had a sing in the middle of the garden, that or he was calling the squirrel down from the tree.

dog howling

I think we all needed the time outside in the fresh air.  Time outside just to feel the sun on our faces, especially after all the rain over the past few days and time to stretch our legs outside.  It might not have been the lazy weekend we needed but Sunday afternoon helped to recharge our batteries ready for the week ahead.

This day I love the first week back

It maybe cold outside and forecast to snow over the weekend, but we can still dream of the summer. Garden parties the perfect opportunity to socialise with your loved ones in the summer sunshine. It may only be January but nothing is stopping you from getting started on planning a garden party to remember. Whether it’s for your kids birthday party or just a family get together.

Choose a theme

A theme will set the tone for your party and can add a sense of fun to the event. The theme could be inspired by a colour, a country, a film or period. It can also be as subtle or as over the top as you like. Extravagant themes are perfect for children’s parties but can also work just as well for adult garden parties too. Your theme could just be in your decorations and table displays, or could span into your food, drinks and your guest’s attire. Vintage style parties are popular as they are so simple to create. Use Pinterest for some fantastic garden party theme ideas and get your creative juices flowing.

Sort out some seating

It’s likely you will be feeding your guests during your garden party so seating will be required. If you want to go for a relaxed vibe, scatter large cushions and throws around your decking or lawn. This will encourage your guest to sit down while they eat and adds some comfort to your garden. For a more formal approach invest in some rattan garden furniture. This will provide your party with additional seating and surfaces for you and your guests to use.

girls in the garden

Organise some entertainment

Your entertainment will probably depend on the type of party you are throwing and the ages of your guests. If you have lots of children attending your garden party, classic garden games such as hopscotch, frisbee and tag are still popular. You can also buy games to use outside such as Twister and oversized Jenga. You can also get the adults involved with family competitions such as egg and spoon races, rounders or a general knowledge quiz. Your theme could also help you find and create some new games that nobody has tried before. Make sure it’s enjoyable and don’t make any of the rules too strict to avoid any upset amongst your guests.

Prepare an alternative

The British weather can be very temperamental and so it can be a good idea to prepare an alternative. You could clear out your dining room or living room and continue the party indoors instead, or put up gazebos which will protect the decorations and food until the bad weather passes. It’s always best to be prepared to avoid disappointment and disaster so think about a plan B while you plan your party.

What are your tips for planning a garden party?

There seems to be a new trend at the moment, one which is doing the rounds online but yet has many different meanings - Netflix and Chill. For those of you who would like to know more and don't have any ideas what this is, this guide will explain all about it. There are actually three different interpretations of this increasingly popular pastime.

Explanation #1

An opportunity to binge watch a whole series of a favourite TV show with your long term boyfriend or girlfriend.

Explanation #2

A sedate kind of party where you invite your friends and watch a movie together with some nibbles and drinks.  A perfect way to get to know friends, especially if  you  have just moved into student housing in Manchester

Explanation #3

A chance to ask the person you've been admiring from afar to spend some time together and get to
know them better, in other words - a cheap first date.

Ok so now you know what Netflix and Chill means, this article will help you figure out the details and give you a step by step guide to prepare for the night ahead.

Step #1 - invite your guests

Deciding who to invite will pretty much determine the rest of the night. A Netflix and Chill night is a great way to get to know new friends and find out what you have in common. Make sure they know your address, how to get there and get them to bring their PJs if they intend to stay over, have bus and train timetables available if they need to travel or organise alternative transport home for them.

If you're wanting to spend time with a new love interest, then be specific about what's going to happen. Do you actually want to spend time with them or are you expecting a little more? The phrase "Netflix and Chill" has become code for something more intimate in some parts of the world, so be upfront if all you actually want to do is watch a movie and talk.

Step #2 - organise refreshments

This may depend on how long you intend the night to last. As a bare minimum you should get some typical movie treats like popcorn and beer, nachos with dip or whatever your friends would prefer. If it's

something a little more intimate or extravagant, then arrange for pizza to be delivered and have a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge. You don't want to be spending half the time making something in the kitchen, when you were hoping to spend time with whoever you have invited, so keep it simple.

Step #3 - set the scene

If you've made some new friends since coming to University and it's the first time they are coming over, then it's important that you relax and be yourself but also make a good impression. Clean your room, put away your laundry, make sure your bed is made and ensure there's somewhere for them to sit with some snuggle blankets and throw cushions for extra comfort. Prepare the viewing area, do the usual checks like making sure the TV is plugged in, your Netflix account is working and you've got somewhere to put your snacks. Close the curtains, turn on your side lamps and light a scented candle. You're looking to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, regardless of who's coming over.

Step #4 - choose something to watch

There's nothing more annoying than nobody knowing what they want to watch and spending at least an hour debating and deciding. There are a few things you can do to help this process. If you're having friends over then give them a choice of three movies to get the evening started, or give everyone a piece of paper and a pencil and ask them to write down something they want to watch, then put all the suggestions in a box and draw one out.

If you’re spending time with someone on a one on one basis, have a few suggestions up your sleeve or pick a genre you're both into like comedy or drama and choose one together. This gives you something to talk about and is a great opportunity to find out what kind of movies you both like and whether you have compatible tastes.

Step #5 - the end of the evening

If you're having a pyjama party, it's pretty much assumed that your friends will be staying over and will probably fall asleep with Netflix still playing in the background. If this is not the case and you followed Step #1 and arranged transport for your friends, make sure they are ready to leave in good time to catch their bus or train or are ready to leave when their taxi arrives. Making sure your friends get home safely is not only very considerate and thoughtful, it also brings the evening to a natural close which may be a good thing with friends you've just met.

If you're with a date, what happens at the end of the night between two consenting adults is up to the both of you, but never feel pressured into doing anything you don't want to do. Just because "Netflix and Chill" has taken on a more intimate meaning does not mean that this should be an expectation. Make your excuses and let your date know it's time to go if you don't want the evening to progress further.

Well, there you have it. Your guide to a Netflix and Chill evening! No matter what happens, have a great time and don't forget to blow out that candle and clear away any half full glasses before heading to bed. It's always wise to be careful, safe and responsible.

Organising your child’s birthday party is very much a double-edged sword. On one side, it’s a special occasion - and it deserves a lot of thought and effort put into it,on the other, it can be an absolute nightmare.

Chaos can sometimes be used to describe parties but it doesn't always have to be that way.  There are tips and tricks to help reduce the chaos but at the end of the day all that matters is happy children.

Timing is everything

Choosing the right time of the day can be key to a successful party.

It’s best to hold parties around the same time that most kids eat - so anywhere between 12 and 2 in the afternoon. Early evenings often work, too - but you will have to prepare yourself for many different manifestations of the 'crazy hour' or ‘witching hour’.

It’s that time of the day when the kids have had enough, and whatever you do won’t settle them. It’s enough of a struggle in your own home - let alone hosting a party with lots of other children having major meltdowns. It can be better therefore to stick to midday and early afternoon.

Hand over the reins

In an ideal world, we would all have time to plan the perfect party for our children. Sadly, though, for most families, it’s best to hand over the reins to someone else.

You will still have a lot of work to do, of course - cooking the food, booking a venue and decking it out, for example. When it comes to entertainment and activities, it might be easier for you to let a professional do it instead.

There are plenty of children’s entertainers out there - I've seen a magician, a disco, and bouncy castles in the past month alone. I have also heard good things about the Frozen-themed children's parties from Pickle Pie. Of course, you have to give the kids a big say in what they want to do - but there are options out there for every budget.

The small print

Make sure you are aware of all dietary needs for any children coming to the party. Nuts should be off the menu completely, to be honest, regardless of whether or not someone has an allergy. It is also worth asking about any vegetarians or vegans.

It’s only fair to cater for everyone - yet many people forget. I would also advise that when it comes to sending out your invitations, make it clear whether or not you want the parents to stay.  It can also be worth mentioning if siblings are able to attend or if the party area is open to the public also.  Families with young children can often struggle to attend a party as they have no alternative child care.

The girls are getting very excited for Halloween and are having a mini Halloween party.  No party is complete however without some party food, and the girls want to celebrate in style.  This was a perfect opportunity for us to get creative with the new Discoveries popcorn range from Butterkist.

The new Discoveries range from Butterkist has three flavours, Salted Caramel [our favourite], Chili and Lime, and finally Hickory Pork.  We decided to create a savour dish and a sweet dish and began creating.  Well I say we began, the girls started eating the Chili and Lime popcorn and I got to work!

First was the savoury dish

Ingredients

50g butter
150g grated cheese
Food colouring [optional]
Spring onions
1 Bag Hickory Pork Butterkist Popcorn

Method

1. Melt the butter and cheese in a pan.
2. Add food colouring if desired and to the required colour
3. Chop the spring onions and add to the pain
4. Finally add the popcorn and mix well
5. Serve

I added green food colouring as I wanted to create a spooky slime feel, as it is a Halloween party.  The food colouring adds no flavour so it is completely optional.

For the sweet dish I decided to create a Rocky Road using the Salted Carmel Butterkist.

Ingredients

100g butter
400g chocolate
2 spoons syrup
150g Mini Marshmallows
200g Glacé cherries
160g [a bag] Salted Caramel popcorn

Method
1. Melt the chocolate and butter together and add in the syrup.
2. Place about 1/3 of the chocolate mixture into a separate container.
3. Add half marshmallows, the cherries and the popcorn to the remaining mixture in the pan and stir well.
4. Pour the pan mixture into a brownie tray.
5. Sprinkle over the remaining marshmallows
6. Pour over the rest of the chocolate
7. leave to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

The sweet dish was preferred over the savoury dish, but then I guess it always would be.  Both dishes really complimented the new discoveries popcorn range from Butterkist and I have to admit to currently wanting another bag of the Salted Caramel flavour!

What would you create?

Thanks to Butterkist for sending the 3 bags of popcorn.  All words are my own opinion.
