This day I love.......

Following a glorious morning at parkrun we packed the car and headed over to Wales for a short stay. The girls incredibly excited to be visiting Wales, J excited that he was coming too and Little Man just generally excited. Our stay was short and sweet, the reason was for the Conwy half marathon and not wanting a very early start on Sunday morning.

Conwy bay

As it happened we had a rather rushed morning. Car parking was beautifully organised and I need not have worried about anywhere to park. We parked with ease, £2  for the day, and made a short walk over to the start area to register for the fun run.  It was then onwards to locate breakfast, which I was still drinking hot tea as the fun run began. Never mind always up for a challenge. I pushed Little Man in his pushchair, carried tea in the other hand and ran with my eldest over the bridge and back in to the castle. A nice warm up run before the half marathon started.

Once again a race I got stuck in a rather long toilet queue, which meant the race had started by the time I arrived at the pens so I started from the back with the 3hour predicted times. I quite enjoyed starting here and I eased into the race.

The first mile is over the bridges and out towards Deganwy. A few undulations but nothing too major. The marshal just passed the 1 mile maker rang her bell too enthusiastically and it shot into the runners, always good for a giggle. Continued running, legs felt good, breathing felt good and the two mile marker went passed. The next marshal was dancing to keep herself warm, plenty of crowd support and it felt comfortable. The undulations began to increase as we went past Maesdu Golf club and onwards to Llandudno.

The road to Llandudno was beautiful, simply picturesque. A little hill, followed by a gorgeous down hill to the sea. The sea glistened with the winter sun and it was just stunning. A runner behind me shouted to the crowd, 'It's all flat now, right?' The crowd laughed, a rather evil laugh. The Great Orme was in front of us.

The first part from the pier to the headland wasn't that bad. I had a joke with some other runners who were chanting, 'We are from Yorkshire this is not a hill' all the way up, it gave a good giggle and before I knew it I was turning the corner. It looked pretty flat for a moment, so I regathered my composure and my breath and continued. Mile 6 went passed and I was feeling good, half way done. I knew in my head that there was only 1 mile of hill left, I had checked the route before. I could see a slight incline in front and then it looked flat, well flat ish, as it went around the corner. Yeah right. Round the corner was the most evil little kick I have ever seen. Not one runner was running. Even the 2hr15 pacer in front of me was walking. I focused and went for it. My word my legs burnt. Every part of me burnt. Breathing was difficult and I needed to refuel. I grabbed my sweet from my pocket, walked whilst I unwrapped it and the burning eased off. I pushed onwards to the top. Never have I been so grateful to see the top.

Mile 7 saw the most spectacular views I have ever seen, and I even thought I need to walk back up here with the kids to show them this. People were stopping to take selfies, it was amazing. The top also saw a dedicated jelly baby station and a water station. Much needed jelly baby and then it was onwards to a rewarding downhill.

Conwy half hill profile

I wanted to stay at the top and take in the views but instead let gravity take over whilst my legs recovered before pushing down the hill. I didn't see the 8 mile marker, I am assuming it was there. Instead I was far too busy shouting 'weeeeeeeee' in my head all the way down the hill. I looked at the pace on my watch 4.07min/km I almost died, and then continued to run.

The route back was now the same as the out but in reverse. Passing the golf club and onwards to Deganwy. Those little undulations now hurt, but I wasn't stopping. I had 30minutes to get back for a sub 2hr and 4 miles to go. I simply pushed and ran as hard as my legs could go. I was seeking the 2hr pacer, trying to find them in the crowd but couldn't see them. A parkrun I kept saying, and in my head picturing my home parkrun route as I pushed up another hill.

10 mile marker went past, legs beginning to feel a bit tired and I wondered if I had pushed too hard. I wasn't stopping now. I calculated if I continued I would finish at 2hr6secs, a PB, but I wasn't settling for that. I ran harder.

11 miles and I could see the castle. We had driven this road earlier, I had run this way on the out. I was nearly there now. I maintained pace, saving something for the last mile in.

12 miles. Race Angels started appearing. What a great idea, runners who come to support you for that last push home. Loved it. I turned the corner to the bridges and began to push home. They didn't feel this far on the fun run, or on the way out but my word they felt far now. First bridge down, last to go. I wish I had kicked a little sooner, I had misjudged the bend after bridge and the rather fast downhill finish. I saw the clock 2.10.59 and knew I had over 6 minutes to deduct from that. Happy with a new PB. Happy I had pushed at the end to finish within the 2hr6 I had calculated, but still a little disappointed it isn't a sub 2hr. It will come I know it but I really wanted to get there before the year was out.
Me and conwy half marathon medal

Would I do it again? In a heart beat. Even with that mega hill in the middle, the views more than made up for it. Running that downhill was phenomenal and it is such a beautiful course. The girls have asked when they can run it again.

Conwy medals

After the run we had a walk round Conwy and explored the castle before heading home. A very short but sweet trip to Wales and one I hope to repeat next year!

Early this year I had a very exciting email land in my inbox, an invite to a festive mid week break at Bluestone Wales.  To say I was excited would be an understatement, a chance to go to Bluestone at Christmas was an opportunity I could not tun down.  The girls have been desperate to go to the Wales holiday again and Christmas was sure to be magical.

After a 7 hour journey in the rain we arrived at Bluestone.  Our lodge was of a different style to the previous visit  and was spread over two floors.

The bedrooms were clean and modern and the girls wasted no time in choosing their room.  Grandma settled them into bed with a bed time story

Thing 3 and I were a little tired after the drive and we made the most of our modern double bedroom and went straight to bed.

The next morning it became clear the main advantage of having a lodge with the living area upstairs.  The views over Bluestone were fantastic, even if the weather was miserable.

The weather has never stopped us before, and we fully believe in free range fun regardless of the weather.  We got ourselves kitted up and headed to Blue lagoon.

As with our last visit the girls would have quite happily spent all day in the swimming pool.  The water is like stepping into a nice bath, and even when you step out you feel warm.  The changing areas were kept clean and tidy and we saw several members of staff cleaning as we were there.  The pool was busier than last time but we still felt able to relax and have fun.

After swimming it was time for a hot drink before our festive fun began.  The girls remembered the village tea shop and were really surprised to see that Babycinos were now on the menu.

This was the first in a new discovery at Bluestone since our last visit.  Our festive fun was to begin with the Bluestone Pantomime, Cinderella.

The Pantomime took place in the Village Hall.  This was a new building to us and situated behind the spa.  The Oak beams and white walls gave it a real modern feel and was just the right size for the pantomime.  We took our seats and waited for the show to start.

The girls were enthralled.  Cheering and booing and joining in with the chants.  A real proper pantomime, just as I remembered from my childhood.  It was full of laughs and traditional style jokes, just what was needed for a pantomime.  My Mum and I absolutely loved the ugly sisters, two very talented actors and I would highly recommend seeing the production just for them.  Although if you ask the girls they really loved Cinderella and Buttons.

Thing 3 was craving a pizza after the Pantomime but unfortunately the pizza takeaway was no longer available.  We decided therefore to visit The Oak Tree, which was our favourite from the previous visit.  Luckily for Thing 3 they did Pizza and even had a lemon desert which catered for another of Thing 3 cravings.

The girls felt very festive sitting by the beautiful tree in the restaurant and it was certainly beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

On our previous stay we had a beautiful walk in wet room and in this lodge we had both a shower and a bath.  The girls could not wait to get into the bath and have a good splash around.  The bathroom was clean and modern and had plenty of room for the girls.

I turned 28weeks pregnant with Thing 3 and so had to take a bump shot.  I do feel like I have stuffed a bowling ball up my t shirt

Our plan was to return to Camp Smokey for lunch as it was one of our favourite places, however it was closed for the winter.  Instead we headed over to the activity centre for some indoor play and some fun out of the rain.

The girls loved that they were greeted by reindeer and trees, it certainly felt very festive.

The girls did not know but we were actually here for a secret mission.  An elf mission to be precise.  The girls were about to enter the Kingdom of the elves and were given maps outlining their secret mission.  Our elf guide explained what we had to do to graduate as elves and gave each of the girls a uniform, before shrinking us so we could fit through the key hole.

It was time for our mission to begin.  Each room had different tasks that an elf must undertake from ensuring pets stay asleep, to helping children have magical dreams.  The favourite room of all was the chocolate room.  In here the girls had to make the chocolate for the advent calendar.

Whilst the girls ensured the chocolates were up to scratch, Mum and I posed for an Elfie Selfie.

The girls completed all of their missions and graduated from Elf school.  As events go the Elf Academy was by far one of my favourite.  It was pure interactive festive fun and if we could we would have done it again.  All of the Elves were fantastic and interacted with all of the children.  This interaction made it what it was, as it simply flowed and was fun rather than scripted.  Crackers the elf needs a special mention, pure comical genius!

After visiting the Kingdom of the Elves the girls were in a real festive mood.  Neither of them wanted to take off their elf uniforms and both asked to take them to show and tell the following week.

Perhaps the only way to celebrate becoming Elves is with Peter Pan and Jinglebelle.

Jinglebelle is a fun interactive dinner show which is a very memorable way to spend an evening.  The girls had to help Peter Pan find his shadow, who did keep running away during our Christmas dinner.  There were jokes and activities to do to help Peter Pan and Jinglebelle.  Certainly a fun evening and a perfect way to celebrate their success at elf academy.

Oh and I forgot to add the festive tunes which made it perfect for dancing around the Christmas tree.

Our last full day at Bluestone was fast upon us.  It had been a truly festive week so far and the festive fun continued.  After a morning swimming, as this was the girls request on their final day, we headed for a festive Hot chocolate before our afternoon activities.

The girls love crafting and making things at home and with all the excitement of Christmas we thought it would be great to have an hour crafting with the Bluestone team.  It gave the girls chance to refresh after a busy few days and they actually got really creative.  We made Christmas cards, present boxes, baubles for the tree and character spoons.  Rather productive for an hour crafting!

They were both starting to get very excited and also seemed to have picked up the Bluestone Christmas song which they have been singing non stop on repeat.

I had lined up a special treat for the girls after crafting.  They were headed to the spa for an hour with Grandma to have their nails and hair done, whilst I went for a relaxing pregnancy massage.

Thing 3 seemed very happy with the massage.  I met the girls downstairs afterwards, we finished almost at the same time, and they had lovely sparkly nails and feathers in their hair.  Both ready for the Festive season, pampered and relaxed.

There was only one way to end our day and that was of course with a Christmas dinner

After dinner we were all transformed back into elves, which lead the girls to wonder what was happening next.

For our final evening the girls got to meet Father Christmas himself.  They even got to listen as he told them a wonderful Christmas story featuring Ruddie the reindeer.

Our time at Bluestone was almost to an end.  The girls spotted the cast of Cinderella and my Mum attempted to take a photo of us all together.

After which it was time to say goodbye, but not without watching the spectacular festive light show in the village.

Our time spent at Bluestone Wales really got us all into the festive spirit and was the perfect way to start the holiday season.  I can only imagine how amazing Bluestone is over Christmas.

Thank you Bluestone for inviting us to stay.  Our accommodation was provided free of charge but we paid for all activities.

Whilst the lodge offered more than adequate self catering facilitates, as a family we wanted to experience the whole of Bluestone and therefore decided to try each of the restaurants on site. I have composed a quick round up of each of the places we ate at.

Woody wilds dinner show (wild wood cafe) and breakfast

We booked in advance to have breakfast at Woody Wood Cafe and to have dinner at Woody Wild interactive dinner show.  The breakfast was a buffet and had everything from full English Hot breakfast, to cereals, toast and fresh fruit.  There was plenty for us all to eat and after breakfast the girls got to meet one of the Woody woodland gang.

Woody Wilds dinner show followed an interactive show which the girls really loved.  The magical tree had them mesmerised and it was a lovely family evening.  The food was brought to your table and consisted of chips, sausage and chicken nuggets, accompanied with baked beans and corn.  Not the healthiest of dinners but the kids really enjoyed it.

Farmhouse grill

I have to admit to being very unimpressed with the farmhouse grill. The large ceilings gave the place an echoing noise as we ate. Myself and the girls felt cold and had to put our outdoor coats on. The food choice was grilled meats which was to be expected, but service was really slow. We had to remind our waiter at one point. I ordered a medium steak and it came extremely well done which just was unappetising. They had run out of sundaes for the kids and instead gave vanilla ice cream, yet we were charged as a sundae. We also had to ask for a spoon to eat the ice cream with. To add to our evening the card machine broke twice whilst trying to take our payment so we then had to go and visit a cash point. Not the greatest of evenings and I would not go back there. They do do takeaway which we did not try but perhaps this would be better.

Camp smokey

This has to be my favourite spot at Bluestones. Set out in the woods it is a walk to get to it but in my opinion well worth it. The food might not be stylish to look at but it tasted fantastic. The traditional camp food. Your order is called by your name with the bang of a pan which certainly adds to the atmosphere. You can choose to eat inside or out. After dinner there is a flame pit allowing you to toast marshmallows which is a real treat.

Oak tree restaurant

The oak tree restaurant opened whilst we were there. It takes local Welsh product and adds an Italian twist. This is a sit down formal affair but children are made to feel welcome. The food here was amazing, really beautiful and full of flavour. Certainly one of my favourite places to eat in terms of taste. There was a good choice on the menu and the deserts were heavenly.

The Knights Tafarn

There is a lovely atmosphere in the Knights Tafarn. It is a child/family friendly pub which has a real medical theme and feel to it. The portion sizes were quite large so worth the money. Menu is what you would typically expect from a pub menu, fish and chips, pasta, burgers etc. We enjoyed our time at the Knights Tafarn the atmosphere made it very welcoming.

The Fish Shack at Blue lagoon

The Fish Shack is located poolside at Blue Lagoon. We sat and ate here in our swimming costumes with towels around us and we were not cold. The choice of food here is your usual fast food, burgers, fish fingers and chips. There are kids meals available, which are smaller meals to the adult portion. It cost us £19 to feed the four of us including soft drinks. Our food was hot and there was minimal wait.

It feels like ages ago since we were at Bluestone Wales. It was a truly magical holiday that both girls loved and as a family we enjoyed.

Bluestone Wales

Bluestone is situated near to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, to say the scenery is breath taking is an understatement. It is simply beautiful.  The lodges blended beautifully into the surrounding scenery.  Our accommodation at Bluestone was a 2 bed room lodge. It featured tall ceilings, with lots of light coming through. Open plan living and dining giving the lodge a spacious feel. Both bedrooms were of a good size and the bathroom was modern. The whole lodge was kept very clean.

Our lodge was situated around the lake which made for great evening walks. It was also close enough to the main village hub that we decided against hiring a bike or a golf buggy, although we did see plenty around. There are no cars allowed on site, except for the initial unloading and loading day, but we enjoyed this car free time.

lake at Bluestone

The main village had plenty of shops and the main village shop stocked medicine which we needed as our illness started whilst away, although I must add this had nothing to do with Bluestone. Our girls loved the ice cream/tea shop which had some beautiful cakes and of course ice cream.

Both girls loved playing on the tree tops adventure play ground. This was split into two areas to allow space for the younger children to play. It was lovely watching them climb and explore and I think if we had let them they would have spent all their time playing here. I am trying to work out if we can replicate it for our garden.

Nearby is a beautiful church which the signs say is going to be restored to allow for weddings.  It would make a beautiful spot to get married in.  I could have stood and admired the beauty of the church for a lot longer.

The short walk from the village to the swimming and sports complex is up hill, which both of my girls at 4 and 2 could manage but I could also understand the need for a golf buggy.  We found the swimming area clean and warm.  The girls would have happily spent all day in the water.  As it was we did spend all afternoon.  The lazy river and pool had enough to keep children and adults entertained, even out the water it felt a comfortable temperature.

When the weather is cold or wet you could easily spend a day in the swimming pool or in the sports arena.  There was a huge sky play area for the bigger kids, a circus room for the babies and enormous soft play for the ones in between.  Added to this a Lego Wall, indoor mini golf, bouncy castle and arcade machines there was plenty to do.

The girls were too young to try the paid for activities but this did not matter there was so much happening that we had lots of fun.  They managed to complete the treasure hunt and they met all the characters at Bluestone.  Our favourite though was taking a walk to Camp Smokey for lunch, toasting marshmallows on an open fire was I think the highlight for the girls.

Bluestone is a truly marvellous place and a holiday which has created some wonderful memories.

The only thing for us which would make it better, well two things:

1. Be closer so we could go all the time and
2. Be dog friendly so we can take our dogs with us.

If you are looking for an amazing family holiday with clean air and plenty to do for all the family I would highly recommend Bluestone.

Happy girls at Bluestone
