This day I love.......: book club

The latest book from the Britmums book club is The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka. When the book first arrived I was a little puzzled about what the book could be about. At only 129 pages I also worried about how involved the plot might get. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This was one of them books that from the second you start reading you cannot put down. I wanted to keep reading. I took ever opportunity to read it. The book tells such an empowering story. Giving an account of how strangers feel in a new land. Coming with the promise of great things, and the real truth is much harder, much colder. This book really is simply stunning.

A really wonderful and powerful book that is on my list of must reads. It is beautifully written, such a detailed account.

In all honesty I am struggling to write this review. A little like the book, I struggled to get into it. I again will be honest I did not finish it, I gave it a good go I got about a third of the way through and then had to stop. I just could not get into it.

Whilst the book is beautifully written, I struggled with the poetic feel to the writing. I am not one for reading poetry so maybe this is why. I found a lot of the sentences rather over descriptive which hindered me to use my own imagination in picturing and becoming part of the story. This is my personal preference on stories, I like to use some of my imagination but this book did not leave me to do this.

I also struggled with following the story as the author flits between present day and his memories. I have to stop and start a book as am looking after the girls or in between meetings or reading on breaks which means I do not get time to sit down and read a book all in one go. I therefore need to be able to pick up the story where I left off and also be able to stop and start as I choose. This is why I much prefer a book with more of a flow, as it allows me to do this.

I tried to get into this book but found it hard to read, it reminded me of one of those books you have to read at school and not one I would pick up myself. Not one for me personally but others may enjoy it. This book was sent as part of the Britmums Book club, find out what others thought here.

I recently joined the Britmums Book club. I have always wanted to join a book club, mainly because I absolutely love escaping into a good book but recently find myself stuck reading the same books. The Britmums book club will give me the opportunity to try new books and discover new authors I perhaps may not have otherwise tried.

The first book on the list is Honour by Elif Shafak. Whilst I found the book really easy to read I also at times got rather confused. The story skips from person to person in what is a large family. Having to read the book section at a time and around the girls meant that I often went days without able to pick the book up. At this point I then forgot the relationships between the characters. I think to overcome this a family tree printed in the front of the book for reference would have been useful.

The pace of the book was just right, it flowed through the story without every feeling rushed, which I find can often happen. Even though I often got confused between the characters relationships, I loved the fact the story was told through the eyes of the whole family. The story skips between times and this adds a certain unknown element which makes you want to read more.

The book is set in London and Turkey in the 1970 and follows the lives of the Toprak family. The story touches on many subjects including loyalty, betrayal, loss, clash of tradition and heartbreak. I found it interesting to discover the traditions and the thoughts and feelings from each character following the brutal and chilling crime.

Overall a really good and exciting read which I think could have benefited from the addition of a printed family tree, just to help those who have to stop start read.
