This day I love.......

Florida, the sunshine state.  The dream destination and for many a once in a lifetime vacation.  Renowned all over the world for its theme parks, but there is so much more to discover in Florida.

We saved for over 3 years to be able to visit Florida and whilst we were there we wanted to make the most of every day.  Our passion to explore and discover new places meant we actually spent as little time as possible in the big parks and instead used our Hotel, which we booked through Hundredrooms, as a base to explore everything Florida had to offer.

A short 30 minute drive north from the main theme park area lies Sanford.  Sanford is known as the ‘Historic Waterfront Gateway City’.  A full day can be spent with the family exploring the vast array of shops and family friendly restaurants.  There is a beautiful marina and plenty of lake walking trails too.  A trip to Sanford would not be complete without visiting Wondermade.  A family owned marshmallow factory and shop.  Here you can make your own marshmallows, take a tour or simply relax and watch the world go by whilst eating the most amazing marshmallows.

The delight on the girls faces as they got to make their very own marshmallows.  They were in their element and may have sampled a few along the way.  I was busy testing all the melt in the mouth flavours, and could not resist the bourbon ones!

Also in Sanford is Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens.  This is the place the locals fetch their kids to play and unwind.  There are very few ‘tourists’ and as a result the zoo still retains a lot of character and charm.  On zoo terms it is on the small side, and takes approximately 2 hours to walk and visit every animal, but it makes up for this in big personality.  We had such an amazing day there.  We got to feed giraffes and meet some of the animals as the keepers walked around the zoo.  There was space for the kids to play and run around, all in the shade or even run around in the splash park.  The girls absolutely loved the splash park and would have stayed there all day.

As a family of Lego fans we had to visit Legoland Florida.  It was such an amazing day out, and actually really surprised us.  Our longest queue time was 30 minutes, which is actually really quick, and most rides we got to go on twice.  The girls were big enough for the majority of the rides too with only a handful they were too small for.  Given how popular Legoland is, it was great to see a place where we could spend our day having fun and not stood in queues.

Legoland also has the most amazing waterpark, in fact one of the best I have been to for families.  There are plenty of shaded areas for the kids, and activity stations dotted around with Lego to keep them busy out of the water.  In the water there are floating Lego bricks so you can build and swim at the same time!  We had such an amazing time that I would go back just for the Waterpark!

We dedicated a day to I-Drive.  There are a huge array of shops, restaurants and attractions.  Ripley's believe it or not is full of interactive displays and provides some great humour.  Whilst Madame Tussauds features an array of American sporting legends there are also movie stars and music stars.  The ability to dress up and role play alongside the figures kept the whole family amused.  Within the same building is the Sealife centre and the Orlando eye.

The Orlando eye provides superb views over the whole of Orlando.  With a helpful interactive guide, to help sport certain iconic buildings and landmarks.  The views are simply out of this world.  I was incredibly nervous given my fear of heights, but the girls absolutely loved it.  In fact Little Man thought it was amazing to be on top of the world.

It was an amazing experience and one which I am glad we have done, but not sure it has helped with my fear of heights.

Experiencing a shopping mall in Florida is like no other shopping experience.  The Florida mall for example is home to over 270 stores and over 2 million square feet of retail space.  A hidden gem within Florida Mall is Crayola World.  The girls loved it here, and had loads of fun drawing, making crayons and creating colouring sheets from their photos!

We spent an evening at Old Town.  If you have never been it is worth visiting just to experience something a little different.  The street is set out like an old cowboy film, and the shops sell a variety of things from homemade soap to souvenirs.  There are bars and restaurants, and fairground rides to keep even the biggest thrill seekers entertained.  The must see attraction in Old Town is the magic show at the Great Magic Hall.  An intimate performance which had both children and adults entertained.  After the show you are even presented with your very own magic trick to perform.  Old Town really comes alive in the evening, and is certainly worth visiting for a more authentic Orlando experience.

Some of the attractions mentioned we were provided with tickets to visit, others are paid.  However all words are my own opinion.

My eldest daughter celebrates her birthday during the school holidays. Past experience has told us that her friends are usually on holiday for her birthday, and so instead of a party we go away as a family for a few days.  She loves it because she gets to choose were we go and what we do as her birthday treat.  This year she chose to go to Legoland, somewhere we had never been before but a place we had all longed to visit.

I feel I should mention that we have not been asked to write this post, or received any compensation and I simply wanted to document our family time at Legoland for her birthday.

Legoland is a good 4 hour drive from our home and given we are very conscious of the amount of time Little Man spends in a car seat we decided to not only break up our journey, but also book a place to stay close by so we could make the most of our days at Legoland.  I searched for hours looking for somewhere to stay, as most places could only accommodate our family in 2 hotel rooms and logistically this would have been a nightmare, so I booked the Lexington Apartments in Slough.

The apartments provided us with a great base, we arrived late on Thursday evening and left late on Saturday night, we had booked until Sunday but my youngest daughter became very unwell and we decided to leave early just in case we needed medical treatment.  This gave us two full days in Legoland, and meant we could leave at 9.30am and be one of the first to arrive.

We had pre booked tickets, which meant we joined a shorter queue, even so we queued for around 45 minutes on Friday and just over an hour on the Saturday just to collect our tickets.  The weather did not help, it was scorching hot and there was no where to hide in the queue so we were left to face full sun with three young kids.  A member of the public did faint from the heat in the non pre paid ticket queue, which goes to show just how hot it was.  I would recommend booking tickets in advance, the queue is much shorter, and book for at least 2 days.  Also if possible avoid weekends it was noticeably a lot busier.

The girls eyes lit up when we entered, like kids in a sweet shop they were Lego fans at Legoland and they wanted to see and do everything.  We planned our day to start at the top of the park and work our way forwards, with day 1 doing the left side and day 2 the right.  It felt the most logical way to tackle the vast theme park.  I am sure there are other ways, perhaps planning around shows or picking favourite rides, but this made sense to us.

Having now visited Legoland I would say it is most suited to children around 5 - 8 years old, but each child needs to be accompanied by an adult under 130cm in height.  This was a big problem for us.  Given that the vast majority of the queues were in full sunshine with little shade, and were not pushchair friendly either myself or my husband had to stay at the entrance to a queue with Little Man in his pushchair.  It was far too hot to put him in a sling, and he did not want to be carried given the heat and the bright sun.  The other then joined the queue with the girls.  The vast majority of the rides we went on meant that one of the girls had to be left at the front of the queue on their own, whilst the other rode the ride with us.  They would then swap places.  I was less than happy about this, and the girl left waiting would cry the entire time until we returned.  It was a horrible experience for us and actually stopped us from going on a lot of the rides we really wanted to go on.  Why there was no chaperon service available, or a call to see if a single adult was available in the queue to ride with the other child I do not know.  I would have happily waited a little longer until an extra adult on their own came to the front of the queue, because they often did but the operators would not allow then to ride with one of my children.

With my eldest on a ride

We began to work out which of the rides would require 1 adult per child, and simply did not go on them.  It was causing too much distress for the child left in the queue waiting.  Instead we opted for the rides the girls could go on together and without an adult, there were still plenty of these and whilst they did not fulfil my adrenaline daughters need for fear, they both had smiles on their faces and loved riding together.

There are a good selection of shows on throughout the day and in various locations in the park.  Little Man and I sat and watched 'Three Little Pigs' in Duplo valley whilst the girls were on a ride with their Dad.  The girls however loved the Lego Friends show at Heart Lake City, and we watched the show more than once over our two days.

Watching shows at Legoland

My youngest was too young to take part in the Lego driving school, so she had to take part in a smaller version of the drive school.  She still really enjoyed driving a car and was even more thrilled to receive her driving license afterwards.

Driving Lego car

I think out of all the different areas of Legoland the girls liked Heart Lake city the best.  They spent the most time here admiring all the Lego sculptures and it was the one place they kept asking to come back to during our two days.

Girls and Lego friends

Making friends at LegoLand

By far the girls favourite area was Splash Safari.  The area could have perhaps done with a few more toilets and changing rooms, but once changed there was no stopping the girls.  Running through the water, climbing the different play areas and laughing and giggling the whole time.

youngest all smiles at the water park

Given the hot weather it was just what was needed, and one of the few parts of the park that had no queue.  The girls loved it.  I loved watching them but like all outdoor water parks in the UK no matter how hot it is you do still start to feel the cold and after 40 minutes the cold water began to make the girls shiver and it was time to get dressed.

eldest sliding down the slide at the water park

My favourite part of Legoland was Atlantis.  This was due to a number of factors, the first was we could all ride this together, even Little Man who had been unable to ride anything else.  It was a totally unique experience, a ride I had never experienced before and I think it really set Legoland apart from other theme parks.  What Atlantis did too was make me realise how much I miss diving, and so when Little Man is a bit bigger I may look into diving again.

All 3 of my children loved Atlantis and we kept our eyes on the ride screens in the park to join the queue at the shortest possible time.

waiting after atlantis

We had not even covered half the park on our first day and were so glad we had booked tickets for a second.  My youngest began to feel progressively unwell as the day unfolded and as a result we hired a buggy to help her rest.  The girls seemed to love their new chariot, Daddy pushed them as I pushed Little Man in his buggy.

The children at Legoland

Our second day was spent more taking in the views and the park as a whole.  As it was a Saturday ride times that had been 30-45 minutes the day before had now at least doubled in length and the girls just did not want to wait this long.  They loved watching the shows, shopping and taking our time in Miniland.

The heat began to make my youngest feel worse and so we took the decision to leave a little earlier than we would have liked to.  Looking at this photo we took as we left you can see how poorly she was getting.

My eldest daughter said it was one of the best birthdays ever and would love to visit Legoland again.  I think we will be shall wait until both girls, or at least one of them, is over 130cm tall and that way we will all be able to ride the rides together.

Most of the school holidays it has rained so when we had a relatively dry day we decided to make the most of the weather.  My Mum treated the girls and I to a day out at Gulliver Kingdom.  Gulliver Kingdom in Matlock is a theme park for younger children and if I had to put an age on it I would say under 8s.  Everything is height based and your entry price is based on the height of your children.  This meant my youngest could go on the same rides as her sister, which were all but 3 rides in the park!

My eldest is a huge thrill seeker and much prefers roller coasters to the kiddy type rides.  Lucky for her there was a roller coaster she could ride and we went on it a few times.  My youngest wanted to go on the big wheel.  I am petrified of heights, and by petrified I mean I stand on a chair and I am scared of the height.  Gulliver Kingdom in Matlock is hilly, as Matlock itself is a very hilly place and with the big wheel on a hillside I was not too enthusiastic about this ride.  Needless to say when it stopped at the top I turned green.

After the fright from the height the girls jumped with fear when they spotted a dinosaur!

The only queues we encounter were in the dinosaur part of the park and as a result we didn't get to go on all of the rides.  Next time we will have to start here.  Our final part of the park was deliberate as it contained the log flume.  Neither girl had been on a log flume before and their comments on the way round of this is boring, and why are we sat in a boat had me giggling.  They soon got giddy when we started going up the ramp and then the scream as we plunged and splashed into the water below.  This was soon followed with cries of 'again!' to which we obliged.

The girls loved the log flume and I have a feeling we will be back to ride again.

This day I love a day out at Gulliver Kingdom

It can be a difficult job to keep the rest of the family entertained. This means coming up with ideas that are going to appeal to everyone. It’s a lot easier to do this than you might think because there are lots of choices. Of course, you need to give some serious thought to what these options are. Here is a list of several ideas that you can choose from.

Visit a Museum

A great source of family entertainment would be to visit a museum. This is particularly useful if you have young kids. A museum trip allows you to give the kids a fun-filled day that’s also educational at the same time and many museums are free of charge. As there are plenty of museums available to choose from there is sure to be one to suit everyone's taste.

Go to a Theme Park

If you fancy getting out of the house for a day, but you don’t find museums stimulating enough, a theme park is a possible solution. It’s especially appealing if the weather is hot. You might be a little worried about cost, but you need not be. There are plenty of coupons for family attractions such as theme parks and water parks. This gives you the chance to enjoy an adventurous day out at a cheaper cost. You could even take a picnic with you and make a day of it.

Home Entertainment

Sometimes the weather is horrible, and little can be done about it. A side effect of this means going out is often off the table. It helps to prepare some entertainment for rainy days in. One of the best ways to do this is to look at reasonably priced home entertainment bundles. These packages offer you access to hundreds of channels, so there should be plenty of choice for the whole family.

playing computer games

Play Board Games

We all know children enjoy television and video games, however there are plenty of ways to entertain without technology. Dig out some classic board games and get the whole family involved. These are timeless and fun, and they teach kids about teamwork and lateral thinking.

Talent Show

Once the board games are finished with, you may need to come up with a novel idea or game to play. Children love to make up shows and a talent show for the family could be a great way to pass some time. This will be fun and amusing - people may or may not take it seriously, but this adds to the amusement. It’s a great way to spend some time together bonding as a family.

It’s plain to see there are plenty of ways you can keep people entertained. You just need to try to decide what the best option is. You need to think about entertainment that’s going to be suitable for the whole family. The ideas in this post are great places to start, and you can probably come up with some of your own as well.
