‘How well do babies see’?

When my girls were babies I often wondered to myself how well they could see, and what they could see.  As those newborn eyes gaze at you for the first time you wonder just how much they are taking in and also what it is they are noticing.

As your child develops you slowly begin to see them working out the world around them, noticing more and becoming more alert.  As we are about to welcome Thing 3 into the world I wanted the girls to understand just how much baby is aware of around them

I have found a really handy tool online from Vision Direct, Europe’s largest online retailer of contact lenses.  They have developed an interactive tool along with some leading expert opticians called ‘How well do babies see’?

The tool is really easy to use, you simply enter your babies age and the tool will give you some idea of what your baby’s field of vision, depth perception and colour awareness might be like.  As you move the slider, you’ll notice colours and objects become sharper. For instance a newborn will see only black and white while a two-month old will see only bright primary shades.

The girls have found the tool really fascinating and it has helped them to understand more about baby.  I have also learnt a lot from the tool and understand a little more about babies eyesight development.
