This day I love.......

I have had a busy but very fun couple of days.  Whilst the girls have been at school I have been getting rather creative and doing a few Halloween crafts!

Last year the girls loved trick or treating.  Our neighbours really seem to enjoy it too and most of the houses in our street are decorated, this in turn means the girls come away with quite a few treats.  Last year they filled their bags and started using their witches hats to carry more treats.  Unable to find any larger treat bags I decided to make them one.

I took a paper bag and hung it on the washing line with a clothes peg.  Then using black spray paint I carefully spray painted the bag.  As it was hanging on the washing line I could get all the way round the bag to paint all sides, and it dried well blowing in the breeze!

Once dried I drew a ghost and stuck this to the bag to act as a template,  Using the glow in the dark paint I sprayed the ghost shape onto the bag.  The result is a rather spooky Halloween trick or treat bag [the picture is a bit rubbish but my camera and phone could not pick up on the detail in the dark.

My girls seem to really love conker hunting at the minute, and I love that it gives us an excuse to spend more time outdoors.  However it does seem to mean that I have a house full of conkers.  We do put some of them back outside in our garden for the squirrels.

I took some of the very many conkers that the girls have and sprayed them orange.

The great thing about conkers is that they have a similar shape to pumpkins and when sprayed orange look like mini pumpkins.  Giving them a lighter spray means some of the conker brown still comes through as if they are stripped, and it gives it a more natural look to a real pumpkin.  Of course carving them would be rather tricky so I took my trusty permanent marker pen........

...... and drew some scary pumpkin faces on them!

When the girls came home from school they even drew a few scary faces on the mini pumpkins!

I am thinking of saving a few for Christmas and perhaps painting them white for snowmen?

All paints mentioned were provided free of charge, words are my own opinion.

Up-cycling is about giving an item a new purpose.  It is not always about making an item more beautiful but simply reusing to stop an item going into waste.  The girls have a little wooden box for which we lost the lid, and for some time I have been wanting to make it more useful.  It seemed a shame to simply throw it away.  I decided to turn it into something the girls could get much more use out of.  I gathered together a selection of Rustoleum Aerosols and began to get to work.

I began by spraying the wooden box with white surface primer this was to ensure an even finish with the colour.

Once dry I gave the box two coats of blue paint, leaving it to dry in between

Before finally giving the middle two coats of chalkboard paint

The girls now have a chalk board and I plan to use it with my youngest to help her practise letter formation.  The girls have already started using it as a tray to carry items which I think is another wonderful use. I am so glad we decided to up-cycle our wooden box!

Halloween is fast approaching, I can't believe it is that time of year already. Last year the girls and I made our first Halloween decorations at our local ceramic paint shop. This year we got creative.

We took some items from our recycling bin and covered them in tissue paper. We used a 50:50 mix of PVA glue and water to stick the paper onto the items. My youngest got a little carried away and just covered everything in glue but at least she had fun. As well as covering some items in paper we also turned some into spooky mummies ready for Halloween.

After the glue had dried we next took out our glue gun and I wrote some words on our items. Spooky words such as eyeballs, newts and poison.

We waited for the glue to dry and then came the fun part, painting. Using our magnetic chalk board paint from Rust-Oleum, we covered each item in 3 coats. The paint only took 2 hours to dry between coats and the sticky paint was fun to apply. It is worth stirring the paint very well before you start in order to achieve good coverage.

We struggled a little to get the paint from our hands. Grandad had to use WD40 on our hand to get the paint off, which luckily worked. We left everything to dry.

The next day we got some chalk and rubbed it over the items to create a weathered/ageing effect. Our spooky pots were ready for Halloween.

I even made the girls a tub to keep their chalk in using an old margarine tub and used the same principals as above.

The girls loved their spooky Halloween craft activity.

Our Rust-Oleum paint was provided for a review.  All words and opinions are my own.
