This day I love.......

According to a recent infographic, social work is one of the fastest growing professions, with the amount of practising social workers expected to rise by 25% between 2010 and 2020. What's more, in addition to possessing academic certifications in social care, many of these individuals have also earned bachelor's degrees and similar academic accreditation within the field of psychology.

This is due to the fact that many social work jobs now involve the administration of psychological counselling of some kind. For instance, as About Education reports, specialist staff such as "Medical and public health social workers offer psychosocial services to individuals, families and groups who are affected by acute, chronic, and terminal illnesses. These services might involve providing psychological counselling".

In fact, due to this ongoing integration of psychological disciplines within social work jobs, many educational institutions now offer combined degrees in psychology, counselling and social work. As the Columbia University Center for Career Education states: "Psychology, Counselling, and Social Work are fields grounded in empathy, care, and transformation on individual, organisational, and/or structural levels. Deemed ‘helping professions,’ these fields are populated with individuals who desire to work for the betterment of others". More and more social workers are beginning to consolidate a fundamental understanding of basic psychological disciplines so that they can provide individually tailored support to the people who are placed within their care.

Both clinical psychology and social work are professions which focus upon helping individuals to resolve issues that are adversely impacting their daily life. Although social work jobs primarily deal with problems related to poverty, legal dilemmas and human rights issues, these problems are often directly related to deeper mental, behavioural and emotional health issues that are pertinent to the field of psychology. From assigning children to foster care centres with special needs facilities, to advising that impoverished adults are scheduled to have consultations with pharmacologists or clinical psychologists, by using psychological disciplines within their daily social work jobs, carers and counsellors can start to identify the root cause of a person's legal or socio-economic issues. By doing this, social workers can arrange for these people to receive the appropriate psychological support that will be most beneficial to their individual circumstances.

After all, as a USC social work study recently revealed, approximately 70 - 90% of people who receive pharmacological and psychosocial treatment have a significant reduction of symptoms and an improved quality of life. So by continuing to integrate the field of psychology within social work jobs, social workers can accurately identify whether individuals need further psychiatric support and refer them to specialist practitioners who will efficiently help them to resolve their physical, mental and social dilemmas.

Time.

Time it's such a funny thing.  There are times when we wish it would hurry up and times when we feel it drags.  I have been sat for a while wanting to write this post, waiting for the right time.  My time.  A time when I felt I could finally process the events of the past few months.

This year hasn't been easy.

I had a rough time at work, which I am still not ready to talk about, followed by the passing away of my Granddad.  I moved jobs and was made redundant.  I remember that day:

7.20 - Alarm clock goes off
8.00 - Washed dressed and excited to continue with training, I check my watch
8.12 - I decided to slowly walk down the corridor to my colleagues room, we had agreed to meet at 8.15 for breakfast.
8.14 - I check watch again.  Deciding if to wait or to knock.  I knock.  I wait.
8.15 - We head down to breakfast.
8.30 - Training begins
8.50 - My manager calls me out of training.  My instinct wondering what is happening, then I recognise the coat and bag in the room as belonging to the HR manager.  My instinct kicks in and I know what is coming.
9.00 - I check my watch again, wondering how much longer I am going to be kept waiting.  I know what is coming I have been through it numerous times before.

By 9.15 the news I had lost my job due to a downsize in team had been delivered and I was awaiting transportation to be taken home.  I checked my phone, no signal.  I checked my watch.  Over the next 45 minutes I kept checking my watch, wanting time to move quicker so I could get out and go home.  I just wanted to collect my thoughts.  I was in shock and just needed that time to me, to think.  At 10.01 I finally had signal and text my husband.

I cannot fault my manager or the HR manager who did everything they could to make things easier on me.  I could see on their faces it wasn't an easy thing to do and have no bad feelings towards them.  It is simply one of those things.

This new found time I now have, job hunting, processing the past few weeks, playing that day over and over has me in a mix of emotions on a hourly basis.  The one and only thing I am certain of is when 'Life gives you Lemons, make lemonade'.

I am using this new found time to spend it with my girls.  They are in nursery less, so we get to play more.  I am focusing more on my blog and trying to improve my writing.

I cannot believe how much my girls have grown up in the past nine months, since the last redundancy I went through.  My youngest talks, she is in the 'Me do it' phase and the 'No' phase.  These are both cute and testing at the same time.  My eldest starts school soon.  She is learning to read and write.  She is showing an increasing amount of interest in different languages, the days of the week and how to tell the time.  She asks almost constantly what the time is.  I have decided that for her birthday I am going to buy her a Snow White watch from The Watch Hut.

Without this new found time, I would be missing this moment in my girls lives.  Missing the opportunity to teach my eldest how to tell the time and watching my youngest gain her independence.  That is not to say I am not looking for work, I am.  For now though my suits hang in the wardrobe, my work watch is on the side and I am busy making lemonade.

There is a sponsored link in this post to the Watch Hut.  However the post is true and one which I wanted to write.

Today was a day of mixed emotions.  I met today with my manager and the existing team for the last time.   After nearly 7 years of working with the same company I will be starting a new job in September.  The company is restructuring and today several of my colleagues found out if they managed to secure a job within the new organisation.  It was very tense sitting round the table together, myself and 1 other colleague excited about our new prospects with other companies, whilst our colleagues each in turn received a phone call one after the other telling them the outcome.

I am sad to be leaving and incredibly nervous about my new job but at the same time I cannot wait to start.  I am excited and full of ideas.  I feel so lucky to have such an amazing job opportunity in front of me to go to.  I cannot wait to get started.

As part of my job I require a company car, as I do a large amount of travelling.  Today the car arrived.  My new car,  My eldest daughter was excited and looked out the window to wait for it arriving.  She saw it arrive and rushed to open the front door, saying wowee.  As I was fixing the car seats into the car, the girls climbed in the front and started pretending to drive the car.  Next thing I know they both start giggling to each other and then they did this

It really helped cheer me up after a day full of very mixed emotions.  Here is to the start of something new, to new beginnings

This day I love new beginnings
