A Get out and Grow school competition

This is a featured post containing a competition Sponsored by British skincare brand, Sudocrem.

For as long as I can remember I have always had a love for the outdoors and growing plants. I can remember every year growing potatoes in a bucket with my Grandad. Tipping out the dirt to see what had grown. My Grandma taught me how to take cuttings and replant them to grow new plants. Their garage was covered in sweet peas and we would pick them and eat them in the garden.

In my own garden I have two apple trees, a pear tree and a cherry tree. I bought a fig tree from the nursery for 50p and for the first time this year it has started to grow. Outside the doors my hanging baskets grow tumbling tomato plants rather than flowers and I have an abundance of rhubarb and strawberries growing out of pots.

My parents also grow their own fruit and veg and my children enjoy growing their own fruit and veg not only at home but also with their Grandparents. Last year they planted and took care of pumpkins which they then successfully used over Halloween. During Autumn they pick blackberries and cook fruit crumble and one of their loves is eating apples straight from the tree.

I am incredibly excited to announce that I am a Get Out and Grow ambassador. In a recent survey Sponsored by British skincare brand, Sudocrem, the Get Out and Grow project was created. The research suggested gardening is being forgotten and that many children lack basic knowledge about the natural world and where their food comes from. Only 8% had ever picked an apple and 73% had never grown a sunflower. These statistics are rather shocking given how much fruit and veg my own children grow.
