This day I love.......

This is a featured post containing a competition Sponsored by British skincare brand, Sudocrem.

For as long as I can remember I have always had a love for the outdoors and growing plants. I can remember every year growing potatoes in a bucket with my Grandad. Tipping out the dirt to see what had grown. My Grandma taught me how to take cuttings and replant them to grow new plants. Their garage was covered in sweet peas and we would pick them and eat them in the garden.

In my own garden I have two apple trees, a pear tree and a cherry tree. I bought a fig tree from the nursery for 50p and for the first time this year it has started to grow. Outside the doors my hanging baskets grow tumbling tomato plants rather than flowers and I have an abundance of rhubarb and strawberries growing out of pots.

My parents also grow their own fruit and veg and my children enjoy growing their own fruit and veg not only at home but also with their Grandparents. Last year they planted and took care of pumpkins which they then successfully used over Halloween. During Autumn they pick blackberries and cook fruit crumble and one of their loves is eating apples straight from the tree.

I am incredibly excited to announce that I am a Get Out and Grow ambassador. In a recent survey Sponsored by British skincare brand, Sudocrem, the Get Out and Grow project was created. The research suggested gardening is being forgotten and that many children lack basic knowledge about the natural world and where their food comes from. Only 8% had ever picked an apple and 73% had never grown a sunflower. These statistics are rather shocking given how much fruit and veg my own children grow.

We were invited to an event in London with Sudocrem who kindly provided travel so we could attend. We have not been asked to write a post or share our day but I wanted to do so to document my experience.

I was excited to take Little Man to London. It is rare I can travel with just one of my children and given his love for trains and buses I was so excited to see his face. I wasn't disappointed either. He was as good as gold on the train, he loved looking out the window and was just amazed that he was on a train!

We were attending an event for Sudocrem who have launched a new my Little Sudocrem that is perfect for little green fingers. The perfect size to pop in your bag or even your pocket and with all the same properties to treat and soothe skin exposed to a harsh day.

The event took place at Clifton Nurseries which was a real hidden gem in the centre of London. I couldn't believe such an amazing and colourful place existed in central London, completely hidden and surrounded by the tall houses on all sides. It was just a feast for all the senses.

We were treated to a story all about growing seeds and even got the chance to plant our our sunflowers. I was shocked to discover that 73% of children had never grown a sunflower and only 6% had ever eaten a pea from a a pod! This is something we do every year so it never occurred to me that some children do not. Little Man loved pulling the carrots from the ground and planting his own sunflower, which has just started to sprout on the kitchen window. Great British Bake off winner Frances Quinn created a stunning cake and even gave us a signed copy of her book.

We unfortunately had to leave a little early as we had to get back to pick the girls up from school. Although it was a whistle stop tour it was really beautiful and we are so grateful to have been invited.

Here is a quick look at our day

Having 2 children and working freelance it can often be hard to juggle work life balance.  I always find it important to spend time with my children and try to spend as much time with them as I can.  I want them to have fun, and I want to be there sharing the fun with them! In my opinion, you should always be looking for activities to do with your kids. Here are three favourite things to do with my children:

Baking

Nothing says ‘super fun time’ quite like baking. It’s the ultimate mother-kid activity to do. Baking is so enjoyable because your kids really get into it. I think it’s partly because baking can be messy, and kids love to make a mess. They’re always getting told off for being messy, so when they get to do a messy task, they love it! There are so many amazing things you can bake with your children too. With the cold seasons approaching, why not consider baking some gingerbread men? It’s amazing seeing them get so excited when you pop the treats in the oven. And then they sit there staring at it, waiting for the baking to be done! It’s adorable, and something you must do.

Gardening

Gardening is a wonderful little activity that can be done whenever it’s nice outside. Why limit yourself to indoor fun when there’s loads of stuff outdoors. What’s great about gardening is that it lets you spend time with your kids but also do up your garden. So you’re getting two benefits out of one thing! When you’re gardening with kids, you can plant all kinds of cool things but my favourite choice is fruit. You can buy fruit trees that have been grown a little bit already in a fruit tree nursery. This means you don’t have to plant it from scratch, so it can save a little time. You just plant the fruit tree in the soil, let your little ones water it and watch it grow. Plus, you’ll end up with lots of fresh fruits to feed the kids!

Bike Rides

I’ll stick with the outdoor theme and choose bike rides as my next suggestion. Going on bike rides with your kids can be super fun and good for you! You’re all getting fresh air, and it can keep you fit as a family. Also, you can ride to loads of cool places and have a nice little day out with your kids. It’s the perfect way to spend time with them while keeping them active and healthy at the same time. If your children are too small to ride their own bike, then I have a couple of suggestions for you. Firstly, you could get them a little tricycle or a bike with stabilisers. This will make it easier and safer for them to ride along. Or, you can get a child seat attached to your bike so you can cycle with them on board.

A big part of motherhood is forming bonds with your kids. If you aren’t spending time with them, they can grow distant from you. it can be hard to find time if you’re working and they’re at school, but there’s always a way! These three activities are fantastic if you want to share experiences and have a good time.  What are your favourite activities?

The weather stayed quite nice today which gave the girls and I an opportunity to do a little bit more work in the garden,  Following on from a few weeks ago when we began to clear up the twigs and leaves I decided that today we would take care of our garden wildlife.

The girls and I love watching the wildlife in our garden, one of the reasons we bought the house was for the woodlands at the bottom of the garden.  We have a hedgehog which regularly visits and we built a den for him with the twigs in the corner of the garden, behind the shed, so the dog cannot get him.  On a recent trip out I took the time to show my daughter the things we can and cannot feed hedgehogs, which she really enjoyed and has not stopped telling me we cannot feed them milk or fish

The girls love to stand at the kitchen door and look out into the garden to watch the birds, so we put up our window box feeder so we can watch the birds eat

This is a great way to get up close to watch the birds and the squirrel tends to leave this food alone as it cannot climb the window

I explained to my eldest how it is important to clean the bird feeders regularly and so we got to work giving them a wash in some mild detergent

washing bird feeders

After washing, rinsing and drying the bird feeders we filled them back up with seed and hung them out for the birds

We will be making some more bird food like we did here, but I had run out of bird seed so could not do it today.  We are also going to be making some bird feeders from toilet roll tubes but again I need some seeds so we may do this later in the week.

Our final job for the wildlife in our garden was to fill up our water bowl

This year we are trying to encourage wildlife into the garden.  Our garden has very few plants but has lots of trees.  Late last year the girls and I planted over 200 bulbs into the garden, including English bluebells, as we are trying to create a woodland feel to the garden.  So far only a couple of flowers have appeared but I am hoping more do soon.

I also ordered some plants today which will help create more of a habitat for the birds, bees and butterflies.  All the plants that have been chosen are to encourage wild life into the garden.  These include Callicarpa profusion, for the birds, honeysuckle for the bees and Buddleia for the butterflies.  I am also looking for ladybird and insect houses so the girls can learn more about insects and ladybirds.  It is nice to finally make a start on the garden, we moved in almost a year ago and so far not much has changed.

Next year we will be starting our fruit and Vegetable garden.  I am currently working out the best spot to grow in, as we have an East facing garden and the trees cast shadows on the garden at different points during the day.  Our previous house was a south facing garden and we had a successful fruit and veg patch.  I am looking forward to growing our fruit, veg and herbs with the girls.

This day I love gardening
