This day I love.......

The summer holidays meant I had to get a little creative with my training. Juggling three children and fitting training in wasn’t easy but for the most part I managed it. One day a week all three children would go to holiday club and it was on these days I would fit in my long runs. One evening a week I would do a speed session. Anything else I tried to fit in as and when. Sometimes it would be buggy running and others it would be running alongside the girls on their bikes. Often though it would be late at night once the kids were asleep but on the whole I managed between 4 and 5 runs a week.

The high of Endure 24 but the high distance meant I had to start the month of steady. Luckily for me my body seems to be adapting to the high mileage and it wasn’t long before I could be back at distance. I struggled a lot mentally with my running in July and in August. Having lost J in June I was running places where I ran with him often and I would instinctively look for him. I broke down in tears on a number of my runs, even now in September I find certain routes mentally tough.

The heat was relentless throughout the summer months, even if it wasn’t always sunny the heat was always there and it made several of the training runs tougher than perhaps they should have been. I don’t think my mental health was in the right place either and I think that added to the issues I was experiencing.

Beat the street finished and our team won, which also meant I could start running normal routes again without stopping to tap loads of boxes on the way. Although there is a part of me that misses them. Whilst I hope it is not the case I may have also had my last buggy run with Little Man, fingers crossed we do manage to go out again as I have loved running with him but I cannot foresee it happening.

I only had the one race in July and August, Round Donny Run. I ran it last year with my friend, who is known as my ultra hubby as we spend a lot of time together training and running ultras. Round Donny Run is a 35km staged event. Each segment is of a differing length some are short and only a few hundred meters, the longest is just over 10km.

Last year when I did this I had no idea how long each stage was and therefore found it hard to pace it. Running 100m for example is a different pace to running 10km. This year I knew how long each stage was and could therefore work out what pace to run at. It seemed to work and went really well. The last stage however the heat got to me and I was feeling really poorly. A little disappointed with myself and my time, as I know without the heat I could have done much better, but still pleased to have been significantly faster than the previous year which shows progression.

With the kids on school holidays we also made the most of the ability to travel and went to tick off some of the parkruns further away. Our alphabet challenge is almost complete and over summer managed obtain most letters with the letters I, J, Q, U, Z left to complete.

July and August were certainly tricky months to fit training in but overall I am pleased with the amount I did. I couldn’t have physically done any more. Not long now until Loch Ness!

I have just switched the computer on to write my July running update, and realised I have not yet written May or June. No idea how that has happened so I must apologise. The past few months have gone from crazy busy to quiet on the running front. In fact I don't have a single race booked in August, and can honestly say I cannot remember the last time that happened.

May

May started with a milestone run for my daughter and I. She completed her 10th adult parkrun and I completed my 50th. It was amazing to run together and achieve the milestone on the same day. She makes me laugh with her running as she sprints then stops, then sprints then stops and repeats. I think her time will only get better as she runs more and stops less.

In a bid to keep up my fitness and in addition to running I have started cycling more with the kids. Some times I cycle with them and others I run alongside them. It is very stop start but it is better than doing nothing. I also love a weekly spin class, and have to say the instructors choice in music is spot on.

Windmill 6 had been postponed in March due to the snow. When I ran it last year it was heavy rain and wind and this year was the complete opposite, bright sunshine and hot weather! I am not sure what has happened at the minute but I have been struggling to run. I enjoyed the course again but just couldn't seem to get going. It did however result in one of my favourite ever running photographs, which was taken by Steve Frith who is raising money for Woodhead Mountain Rescue.

May saw club runs and training runs. The warm weather made running hard work but still a welcome change to the snow. Training began for the Barnsley Boundary and whenever possible I would run a recce run of my section to ensure I knew the route well.

One of the highlights of the month is Liverpool Rock n Roll. We make a weekend of it as a family and have fun exploring Liverpool as well as running! This year was no different with a weekend spent in the city.

I ran a 5km race on the Saturday and then spent the rest of the day relaxing and exploring Liverpool with the kids. Little Man had a sleep on the grass and the girls watched people take on the inflatable course. The day just seemed to pass us by. The 5km course had been different to the one I had run the year before. I had felt pleased with how it had gone and happy that I seemed to be able to run again, given how previous weeks had gone.

Day 2 of the weekend is the half marathon followed by the fun run mile with the kids. The half marathon loops around the city taking in the sights before making its way out to a country park and over to Penny Lane. The first 10 miles are great. There is plenty of support, plenty of regular music and a great atmosphere. Then you hit the waters edge and it all seems to disappear. Those last 3 miles are just horrible and they caught me again. I vowed there not to do this race again next year.

Luckily I made it back to do the fun run with the kids. Little Man had been crying whilst I had been running as he had missed me. I gave him a cuddle and he fell asleep. Just what you need before a run. Still we went out and we ran our mile. It is a shame to not be doing it again next year but I think I need a change.

I spent the rest of May running more boundary runs to ensure I fully knew the route. I will admit I did get lost on one of them.

I continued to help out at Nostell parkrun and run it occasionally. This is one of my favourite photos of Nostell. The best seat in the house!

The girls took part in a test run for a new junior parkrun and are now regulars at the event. As the weather was also improving I took to the fells and had a play off road. I must admit I love it a lot more, even if I get chased by sheep!

June

June began the same was as May, with parkrun. RD duties this time. Seemingly whenever I RD it rains, any other day there is sun. Whatever the weather it is still one of my favourite places.

I said my farewell to the Ramathon in June. It changed its name and ownership a few months ago, had I not already signed up I would not have gone even though it was my favourite race. I use was now, although the route has stayed the same the whole feeling around the race has changed completely. It was sad saying goodbye to somewhere that holds so many memories for me, but onwards and upwards.

Barnsley Boundary took place and I am pleased to say I didn't get lost. I really enjoy the route and still run it regularly.

Another run that I did last year was the school run. A run with spectacular views and I even managed a PB.

I managed some fun runs in June, even getting to run my favourite run Trunce.

After take part in the trial run of the new junior parkrun, the girls also took part in the first event. It was a great success and we try to run there whenever we can.

One of the most brutal but yet amazing races I have ever done took part in June. The Pennine Barrier 50. My full race report can be found here. I think I am still on a high from this run, although I am not sure my legs have forgiven me yet.

If one Ultra a month wasn't enough I decided to go for my second of the month at Endure 24. Things didn't go quite to plan and you can read more here

I must have done something right at Endure because I ended up in a gif! See if you can spot me!!

July

There was only one other way to start July, well after the Endure 24 festival and that was with a timed challenge! This challenge saw over 30km of running. The route took you round Doncaster and was split into stages. Meaning you ran the timed sections and then did whatever you liked in the none timed bits. The total time was taken into consideration for the winner and not who crossed the line first.

It was a really tough route. The walking between timed sections really got to me at times and made the restart in running harder. Not knowing the distance between timed points also played a part. Had I known it was 1km I would have pushed a lot harder. Some sections were short and others over 10km in length. I am still undecided if I would do it again.

Another beautiful run with scenic views is the Toss O'Coin race. Another PB for me on that route and another stunning view.

The girls broke up for summer and with that training has taken a slight twist. Running during the day is now alongside them on the bike, more often though running takes place at club or in the evening. We still get our weekly parkrun fix together.

Even on our weekend away in London we managed a parkrun and she did her first spot of tourism. She was the only junior there and I could not have been more proud of her!

Whilst there might not be any races planned for August, it is still pretty busy with the school holidays. We are hoping to do some more parkrun tourism and of course the countdown to Berlin and Chicago marathons has begun! If you would like to learn a little more about my running journey you can read my interview over on a Beautiful space

As the heat continues to rise I have also been experimenting with new ways to stay hydrated. On my long runs I am still using Active Root, as it helps to replace the lost electrolytes. I tried a protein water drink from Asda recently as a way to help increase my protein but it did not agree with me. Purdey’s is a multivitamin energy drink which I have been trying. It contains a combination of carbonated spring water, fruit juice, vitamins and natural plant extracts and offers a cleaner alternative to the established energy drinks brands. I cannot take the more established energy drinks so this has been a great option for me.

In a bid to keep the kids hydrated I have been carrying Squash’d in my bag. Then when we are out and about I buy a bottle of water and squeeze a small amount in. The kids prefer the taste of juice and will keep themselves hydrated when we are out. I have also noticed that their moods improve when they drink more. It is a simple way to keep the kids hydrated and takes up little room in a bag.

July was a mixed bag.

I started July with a trip to the physio who advised me to go to a and e.  I did so and have been referred for an MRI scan, which I am still waiting for an appointment and it is nearly September.  Nothing could be found on X-ray though which I guess is something.

Injury aside I still made it to parkrun, this time to volunteer and to be honest I never get tired of that view.

Both girls have been working really hard at junior parkrun this month, with my youngest setting a new pb!!

I set another pb at trunce this month.  The colours are just gorgeous at this time of year, and I still think this is my favourite race to do.

Steve managed to capture a running photo of me that I absolutely love.  He takes some amazing photos, I wish I had half his skills.

More pbs at junior parkrun means more treats!  The girls even completed a full 5km parkrun too!

I met with a lovely lady, Emily, and joined in with her People Power Run challenge.  We had been talking for some time on email about it and it was great to finally get out and run together.

Leeds 10k was my first real race this month.  I was desperate for a sub 60 10k and worked really hard all way round.  Read more about it here and see how I got on!

Training runs got harder to fit in as the school holidays approached.  Running and bike riding with the kids on a weekend seemed the best way to get any exercise in.  My diet has slipped out the window completely but once the kids are at school I shall get back on it!

I got to see my wonderful friend Victoria twice in one week, first at the toss o'coin race and then again at Priory 10k.

Training for my marathon in Yorkshire began with some long runs with club friends.  I am hoping this keeps me in good practise for the London marathon which you can sponsor me here

Nostell priory celebrated its parkrun birthday with a fancy dress beach theme.  Of all the outfits me and my best mate turned up wearing almost identical.  Was slightly awkward but we laughed about it.  I also came away with a parkrun pb too!

The bubble rush run has been one of the most eagerly anticipated races in our house, and it was such amazing fun.  The girls really loved it and have asked to do another.

I made some new friends to run with and take on some long runs.  Making the most of the light and taking in some off road runs before winter sets in.

With school holidays well and truly underway I have become friends with the treadmill.  Trying to get in as many miles as possible whilst the kids are in bed.

I ended July with a 5 mile race.  A 4th place finish, 8th overall.

July left me with a new sense of determination and new challenges as I start to increase the distance for the marathon and work around the school holidays! August will be interesting!

New PB set this month

= Half marathon 2hr 19min
= 10km 55min 57secs

For those unfamiliar with Christmas in July it is the time of year when brands and companies showcase their Christmas range to the press.  Doing this in July gives time for material to be published and scheduled as often print can be scheduled many months in advance.  It gives an idea of what the themes and styles will be, what will be hot and what to look out for.

This year was my first Christmas in July and I was incredibly excited.  In total I covered 15 Christmas in July events in one day.  It took a whole day to plan, which I had to redo because of the tube strike and had to spend perhaps less time than I would like to at certain events.  However next year I will know which are the bigger events and therefore which need more time.

I have thought for some time about how to structure this post and I thought the best way would be to list each event I attended and give a feel for the items or range.  These are in the order I visited and not in a preference order as I thought this would flow better.

PlayStation

I had planned to visit PlayStation last so I could spend more time playing the games and taking my time over the upcoming releases, however it was the furthest away from the train station which meant I had to visit first but was not able to spend anywhere near as much time as I would have liked to.

As a huge Star Wars fan I loved playing on the new Disney Infinity Star Wars game.  It was as action packed as I would expect for Star Wars and of course with Disney Infinity you can switch between characters.  Something I am sure my husband would love for Christmas.  My absolute favourite from PlayStation was Project Morpheus.

Project Morpheus is PlayStation 4 new VR [virtual reality].  I often worry about playing these because I suffer very bad motion sickness with VR machines, my mind cannot cope with the movement yet the lack of my moving.  It is why I stay clear of any VR machine, but in the interest of research I gave it a go [this is Jess trying Morpheus but it gives you an idea what it looks like]

Project Morpheus creates two set of images, one in the headset and the other on the TV/screen.  Meaning everyone can join in.  I watched what Jess could see in relation to what we could see and how our game unfolded.  I then got to try it for myself.  After an initial adjustment the whole headset was comfortable and easy to wear and I felt totally immersed in the game.  Everywhere I looked I was part of the game and items felt so real I wanted to reach out and touch them.

Sound and visual are beyond anything I have ever experienced and simply out of this world.  There can be only one word to describe Project Morpheus and that is phenomenal.  I wanted to stay and play all day.

Lakeland

My Mums favourite store is Lakeland and I have to admit to being a huge fan too.  Lakeland was bigger than I expected and should I be invited again next year I must spend more time here.  As I prepare for my marathon in October I am trying to eat healthier, one of the ways I am doing this is with a spiralizer which I love.  I watched the demonstrations and picked up some tips and ideas.  On my wish list is a food processor as I feel I could do so much with it, and it would be great for my training.

What Lakeland did for me was add a real Christmas feel.  Ideas for decorations, gifts and even ideas for the run up to Christmas.  A great sprout hunt game sounded a lot of fun!  Each room laid out with  a theme and I also managed to find some snowflake cookie cutters!

Asda

When I arrived at Asda it was incredibly busy and I did not get any photos.  What I can say is there was a large amount of gorgeous food to sample and some amazing gift ideas

Philips

Philips were showcasing everything from their range.  I started with the juices and sampled some of Joe Wicks’ recipes.  I am a huge juicing fan, it is a great way to get your 5 a day and on a busy day can even give you a real energy boost.  I felt really relaxed and pampered in the health and beauty section

Whilst I loved trying out the Philips Hue lights, and yes I would really love them for our house, I think I managed to get my hands on perhaps what will be one of the most sort after gifts this Christmas.  The SoftPal night lights do not get hot and can be cuddled in bed, priced at an RRP of around £14.99 [varies on character] they make a great gift.  Easy to turn on and off and child friendly I know of two girls who would love these, especially Elsa.

Aldi

I watched with amazement at the wrapping table in Aldi, I wish I had that much skill.  I am already familiar with the Aldi food range, as last Christmas I got very addicted to their Stolen bites.

Aldi impressed me with their gifts for children range, in particular the wooden toys that they are soon to launch as special buys.  The wooden dolls house was exceptional quality and the girls will be getting one of their wooden kitchens for Christmas.

Little Rooster

I would have liked to have spent longer at Little Rooster but it was incredibly busy as a result I could not get to talk to many people but there were a host of amazing gadgets for Christmas, the Go Pro would be at the top of my list.

Tesco

Tesco had a welcoming cafe for a well earned break and the chance to make decorations.  The showcase of decorations was stunning and it certainly gave me some inspiration for our Christmas table

Another of the showcases I wished I could have stayed longer at, and taken more time to explore.  I was a little in awe at the size of the showcase and how stunning everything looked.

Dobbies

We visit Dobbies every Christmas as a family as our local Dobbies has an amazing Christmas display full of lights and decorations.  I got to have a little sneak peak and it has made me very excited to take the girls this year.

Peekaboo Communications

I have worked with Peekaboo communications in the past and am familiar with their brands, however what was amazing for me to see in real life was the OSETBikes.  I know that the girls would want one and the husband!

Need to Know PR

I took a lot of inspiration from Need to Know PR for my younger nieces and nephews gift ideas.  I loved taking a look at the new Cuddledry WWF inspired towels and knew the girls would love the magical fairy doors.  As both girls love dressing up they would also love the Mini range from Nibbling jewellery.  Nibbling jewellery offer a full range of soft silicon, easily washable necklaces that are safe for babies to teeth on.  The girls would love the Mini range for their babies when they play Mummies.

Focus PR

The convenience store Christmas in July event gave a good mixture of Christmas inspirations.  Plenty of alcohol [which I was unable to taste] and Coffee [which I am allergic to] however they did have some amazing health and beauty products and some natural drinks.  The Lemony lemonade and gingerella ginger ale are delicious!

I also discovered a new brand Joss & Main and am now addicted to their site.  They offer flash sales of furniture and décor so if you are in the process of an interior project you need to give these a look.

Poundland

By Poundland my phone had given up and it was time to get out the emergency charger.  I was really gutted because Poundland had some amazing displays.  They had catered for everyone's taste be it traditional or pastels.  Each room was laid out with sheer beauty and you would not believe the items cost £1.  There was a whole host of Frozen goodies available and I know where I will be shopping for the stocking fillers for the girls and decorations for the tree.

The White Company

The sophisticated delicate touches of the White Company were evident as you stepped through the door.  The air was filled with Christmas scents and I wished I could have a house as beautiful.  I know that the girls would love their rooms to look like this for Christmas morning.

Dunelm

Having had to do the events in reverse order by the time I arrived at Dunelm they were packing things away.  I did manage to get a quick look at a few items and have chosen a couple of duvets for the girls.

Morrisons

Morrisons was my final visit at the end of a very long and tiring day.  I got to try my hand at making Panettone tear and share Christmas trees, which by the way are absolutely delicious and will be featuring at our Christmas table.  I decorated a Christmas cookie and now have a new found respect for those that do it for a living.

The Nutmeg range of clothing for Christmas gave me some ideas for our Christmas jumpers and Christmas PJ, both for the girls and for myself.  I even found some Christmas wear for the dogs.

For the first time all day I managed to sit down and had a well deserved drink and something to eat.  Christmas dinner was of course on the menu and I only hope my Christmas dinner turns out half as nice, it was delicious.

I almost miss timed the walk to the train station and made it with a slight sprint to the train with 2 minutes to spare.  As I got on the train the doors closed almost instantly behind me.  I was too tired to find my seat and opted for the seat in the door way.  I opened the very squished cookie box with my decorated cookie inside and whilst it did not look particular fantastic it certainly hit the spot for the train ride home.

I had such an amazing but tiring day, 15 events was a lot to get through and in quite a lot of cases I felt rather rushed.  I wished I could have stayed longer at each event and spent more time chatting and finding out more.  Next year, if I am lucky enough to be invited, I plan to arrive earlier in the day so as to have more time and fingers crossed there will not be a tube strike!
