This day I love.......

I picked my eldest up from school and she was in rather a giddy mood.  Having not had any play-dough for a while we set about making some using our recipe in this post.  We used our play-dough to help my daughter with her homework.  I had downloaded some play-dough mats from Twinkl and used these to practise her letters.

After we had practised our letters my little monster wanted to get creative.  So we had some fun creating our own monsters.

We moulded the play-dough into various shapes until we had one we liked to make a face.  I brought out the box of Mr Potato head shapes and some of our art supplies.  I then let my daughters imagination take over.  She used everything she could before coming up with Pirate Pom Pom Feathers.

Pirate Pom Pom feathers is a cheeky monster.  He likes to tickle with his tickling feathers and make you giggle with his Pom Pom cheeks.  He has a cheeky grin and big lips for lots of kissing.  Pirate Pom Pom feathers is lots of fun and loves to play.

I would love to see what monsters you can create.   There is a competition with mattress on line for children under 10 to create their own monster and you can check out the gallery here.

Since we visited the deep, my eldest daughter has not stopped talking about the fishes.  She wanted to watch finding Nemo all day today, whilst I was getting her sister to have a nap I put it on for her.

We had a craft afternoon and I thought I would follow on the fish theme and make some Paper plate fish.  They are really easy to do, simply decorate a paper plate, cut a triangle from one side and stick on the other side.

My eldest thought this was so much fun.  At first she wondered why I was asking her to colour in a paper plate and kept saying, 'Draw dinner Mummy?', in  a very confused tone but when she saw I made a fish she said without me telling her what it was 'Oh wow Mummy a fish'  she then wanted to make more.

As it is Chinese New Year I figured it was only appropriate that we also make something to represent the year of the snake, so we made some pom pom snakes.  My daughter helped me to count out the Pom Poms, we used 5, and then stuck them together.

Continuing with the Pom Pom theme we also made some fish

My daughter was ever so pleased that we made some fish.  She was also really happy because she finally got to use the googly eyes!

We finally finished our snowman!  Back on a toddler proof Christmas tree  my daughter and I started making a snowman at her request.  We had left him to dry and then would start painting.  Yesterday we finished a second coat of white paint and this morning he was dry.

The next step therefore in making the snowman is to stick on, eyes, nose and buttons.  We used pom poms in colours for the buttons, but you could just as easily use any other item including buttons themselves.  We used black pom poms for the eyes and smile and an orange pom pom for a nose.  I was thinking that for future we could have stuck an empty egg carton on for his nose so that it looked more like a carrot, but we went for the orange look similar to the snowman in the snowman book.

I wrapped a piece of fluffy material around the neck to create a scarf and then my daughter stuck some felt onto the head to create a hat.  She was very happy with the end result.

I found today whilst doing the weekly food shop some flashing ducks which you put in the bath.  The girls love water and having a bath and seen as they were Christmas ducks, I thought I would treat the girls.  When I put the ducks in the water the girls absolutely loved them.   The girls faces were so amazing and they spent their bath time playing with these ducks.

With the ice outside and living on a bit of a hill I did not feel much like venturing outside today.  Instead the girls and I started to make some Christmas decorations.  The first item on our list came as a request from my 2 year old.  When I asked her what she wanted to do she replied 'make a snowman' bit tricky without snow but I came up with a plan.

I took two balloons and tied them together, after blowing them up.  We then proceeded to paper mache the two balloons.  To make the paste I simply put child friendly glue into warm water and mixed together.  Once the balloons were completely covered, I tied string around them to hold the two together, as if to create two snowballs.  We then covered the balloons and string in paper and left to dry.

The snowman is currently drying and tomorrow we will finish him, by painting and making his hat and scarf.  I am not worried about the join between the two balloons as this will be hidden behind his scarf.  I would say that it is easier to coat the balloon in paste and stick the paper to the balloon than to get the paper wet and stick to balloon.  My daughter really enjoyed the sticky feel of the paper mache and had fun making a snowman.  I shall up date you on the progress.

Our next item for today was the Christmas tree.  I have a very active 2 year old and a 7 month old that since working out how to crawl is into everything and opens everything.  The girls are very lucky to have a 'play room' and I wanted a Christmas tree to go in it for them.  So we set about making a toddler proof Christmas tree.

making a tree

My daughter loves hand and foot painting so we used her hands to make the tree shape and her foot for the trunk of the tree.  The tree starts with one hand print at the top and then each subsequent line has an extra hand print.  I painted a star on the top of tree and my daughter then began sticking some pom poms on it for baubles.  She even stuck some glitter on to look like tinsel.

My youngest not wanting to miss out the fun also joined in and made her very own tree, which my eldest kindly decorated for her.

The trees are now hung up on the walls in the play room, meaning I can finally say I have put the tree up.  Slightly better than this is the fact I now have a toddler proof Christmas tree for the girls to enjoy and we had a lot of fun making them.

This day I love a toddler proof Christmas tree.
