This day I love.......

This weekend it was time to pick our Christmas tree.  In previous years we have had an artificial tree, but after over 10 years of moving it in and out the box it finally broke.  I had never really considered a real Christmas tree before.  I thought of them as uneconomical and bad for the environment, but an email from Forestry Commission England gave me interesting food for thought.

First the email stated

'Real trees use 10 times fewer materials and five times less energy than artificial trees.'

Given my bad for the environment thought, I realised that actually a real tree was better for the environment.  I then got to thinking how I am going to dispose of my broken fake tree, I can't sell it or charity shop it because it is broken.  It is not recyclable, so it has to go to landfill which is a real waste.  A real Christmas tree would biodegrade so again better for the environment.  My final concern was the act of chopping down a tree, but again Forestry Commission England put my mind at ease.  Forestry Commission England only source trees grown in a well-managed way in the UK and ensure more trees are planted than harvested.  Then came the icing on the cake not only is every tree Santa approved but we also would be given a sapling to plant at home!  I loved this idea.

This year it is Little Man's first Christmas.  I wanted a way to mark this occasion and planting a tree in our garden seems a perfect way to do this.  As Little Man grows, so will the tree and each year we can watch and see each grow.  I plan on growing the tree in a pot, so that one year when Little Man is older he can have his very own Christmas tree that is the same age as him.

Whilst Dalby Forest is almost 2 hours away from us it is the perfect location for a day out, and it was the perfect location to choose our Christmas tree.  After choosing our tree and given our certificate of approval from Santa we went to visit the man himself in his grotto.  Little Man was amazed by all the pretty lights, and he also has a thing for beards!  As a gift from Father Christmas the girls and Little Man were not only given a present but also give a sapling to plant.  I now had 4 saplings!  I loved this because it was not only something a bit different but something special that the girls could take care of.

Armed with their gifts from Father Christmas we embarked on a Christmas trail through Dalby.

The trail took us through the forest, learning about the different trees and finding the perfect one for Father Christmas.  It was an easy walk and the girls ran ahead looking at the trees and hunting for bugs.  I simply admired the views and took my time pushing Little Man along the route.

Dalby Forest has a wonderful play area for all ages, the girls took it easy in the giant swing whilst Little Man had a nap.

Before putting their balancing skills to the test on the obstacle course.  Not easy in wellington boots!

Although wellington boots are perfect for jumping in muddy puddles!

The night was beginning to draw in and whilst we did not want to leave it was time to head home.  The girls were incredibly happy with their 100% Santa approved Christmas tree, they loved their gifts from Father Christmas and that they got to spend a day outdoors playing.  I feel happy that we made the right decision to get a real tree this year and love that we will have 4 real Christmas trees in years to come, that is if we take care of them!

This Day I love Santa approved Christmas tree

Thank you to Dalby Forest we had a wonderful day.  All words are my own opinion.  We were provided with lunch, a voucher for a tree and the visit to the Santa grotto.

It is that time of year again that we start to decorate the house for Christmas.  The girls. as always. were very keen to help.  The girls put on their Father Christmas hats and started to help me decorate the tree.

My girls transformed into two beautiful angels to help with the tree decorating.  Wearing their beautiful white  100% cotton T shirts from Malcolm and Gerald.  The beautiful pink soft flocking fabric gives the angel wings an extra special feel.  The t-shirts are plain on the front and my youngest kept trying to turn around to see her angel wings.

The beautiful angels took a lot of care and attention in decorating the tree.  Thinking about where to place each decoration and which one to use.

The beautiful angels did a fantastic job at decorating my tree and looked gorgeous in their t shirts from Malcolm and Gerald.

This day I love Angels and the Christmas tree.

The weeks before Christmas have been rather busy.  The first thing on our Festive Fun list was to make the cards for our close family.  I cut out some tree shapes for the girls to decorate.  I gave the girls various craft items and left it up to them how to decorate their trees.

After they had decorated the trees for the cards, it was then time to decorate the house.  My eldest had been asking for some time to put the tree up and was rather pleased when I let her decorate the tree.

Yes all the decorations ended up on one branch, but I guess that's what happens when a three year old decorates the tree.  We also had some rainbow star lights for our play room and made some salt dough stars for our mini play room tree.

The house was decorated our cards made, there was just one final thing to do.  Make the cookies for nursery.  I like to get the girls to make the Christmas present for nursery, rather than buy it.  Last year we made mint angels and stars, this year we decided on cookies.

The girls mixed the ingredients in the bowl, and also ate quite a bit as we went along.

We made the dough and rolled it out, so we could cut out our snowman and star shapes.

The girls also managed to sneak in the odd angel too!

I baked the cookies and when cooled wrapped them up for the girls to give to nursery.  Now we were ready for Christmas.

6 months ago we moved house and I thought I won't unpack the Christmas decorations, I don't need them yet.  Well for the past 2 weeks I have searched high and low and found most but not all the decorations.  My 2 year old has been asking non stop to put up the tree so today I decided we would.

Last year she was a little too young to help with decorating the tree but this year she loved it.  At one point all the baubles were on the same branch but she soon worked out to spread them and she decorated the tree beautifully.

She was so excited and kept saying Christmas tree Mummy.  When we went to visit her Grandma later in the day she told her all about decorating the tree.  She was a little upset tonight that I have turned the lights off on the tree, with her response of 'oh no Mummy what happened' I had to explain that I would put them on again tomorrow.

As its my youngest first Christmas I have also tried to find a few decorations/items to commemorate or personalise Christmas this year.  I would like to share a few of my favourite:

Daisy Days Design

Chloe makes some really lovely items.  Each one is hand painted and customised to your own taste.  I have ordered a really lovely Christmas Wreath from her which has taken pride of place in our hall as you walk in.  I also had to order a Santa Key, as how else will I explain to the girls when they are older how Santa gets into the house

I have ordered each girl their very own personalised Santa sack.  There are a huge variety of designs to choose from.  I was really pleased with the quality of mine and the size is great too.

My 1st Years

My 1st years have a great selection of items to commemorate most occasions.  I ordered a My 1st Christmas bauble and was really pleased with the quality of the item.  It is sure to last a lifetime.

Bags of Love

This has to be my favourite personalised piece and its a stocking.  You can personalise the front and the back.  I added an image to the front and wrote a personal message on the back.  You can even personalise the top.  Delivery is super quick.  The stocking feels very soft and is of a decent size.

I can not wait to see the girls faces on Christmas day and to finish decorating the house ready for Christmas

With the ice outside and living on a bit of a hill I did not feel much like venturing outside today.  Instead the girls and I started to make some Christmas decorations.  The first item on our list came as a request from my 2 year old.  When I asked her what she wanted to do she replied 'make a snowman' bit tricky without snow but I came up with a plan.

I took two balloons and tied them together, after blowing them up.  We then proceeded to paper mache the two balloons.  To make the paste I simply put child friendly glue into warm water and mixed together.  Once the balloons were completely covered, I tied string around them to hold the two together, as if to create two snowballs.  We then covered the balloons and string in paper and left to dry.

The snowman is currently drying and tomorrow we will finish him, by painting and making his hat and scarf.  I am not worried about the join between the two balloons as this will be hidden behind his scarf.  I would say that it is easier to coat the balloon in paste and stick the paper to the balloon than to get the paper wet and stick to balloon.  My daughter really enjoyed the sticky feel of the paper mache and had fun making a snowman.  I shall up date you on the progress.

Our next item for today was the Christmas tree.  I have a very active 2 year old and a 7 month old that since working out how to crawl is into everything and opens everything.  The girls are very lucky to have a 'play room' and I wanted a Christmas tree to go in it for them.  So we set about making a toddler proof Christmas tree.

making a tree

My daughter loves hand and foot painting so we used her hands to make the tree shape and her foot for the trunk of the tree.  The tree starts with one hand print at the top and then each subsequent line has an extra hand print.  I painted a star on the top of tree and my daughter then began sticking some pom poms on it for baubles.  She even stuck some glitter on to look like tinsel.

My youngest not wanting to miss out the fun also joined in and made her very own tree, which my eldest kindly decorated for her.

The trees are now hung up on the walls in the play room, meaning I can finally say I have put the tree up.  Slightly better than this is the fact I now have a toddler proof Christmas tree for the girls to enjoy and we had a lot of fun making them.

This day I love a toddler proof Christmas tree.
