This day I love.......

Nostell Priory played host to priory 10K.  I had wanted to take part in this in 2016 but felt it was too soon after having little man.  I was excited for the race, as it is a place I know well and love visiting.  I had no time in mind simply just to enjoy myself.  The route was two laps and I used the first lap to judge the course.

Starting to the side of the house I started well as we headed up the hill.  My mind started to remember the old parkrun route and then got slightly confused when we turned a different way.  I then had flash backs to the night run and settled into my stride.  Only then we went through the gate, a gate I have stared at and wondered where it went to and here I was about to run through it.  The route from here went through the gorgeous gardens at Nostell.  I wanted to take my time and enjoy the views and scenery, maybe another time.

The route then joined onto the new parkrun route and once again my mind went into parkrun mode.  As we began our ascent up towards the obelisk cramp struck me in the backs of both legs and I had to walk it off.  A long steady down hill followed and I took a gentle jog to try and ease me back into my stride again.  The long up hill back to the house and we were ready for round two.

The second route follower much the same.  A nice steady pace followed by a brief walking spell to get my breath back ready for the final hill.  As I approached the final hill I could see the timer on 59 minutes and whilst I had set off with no time in mind I now wanted that sub 60!  I sprinted and in doing so almost lost my shoe, but it worked and I crossed the line just in time.

After having my timing chip removed from my shoe I was presented with a t shirt, no medal on this race.  It was then time for catch up with some friends who I had not seen for some time and picnic with club.

A lovely evening and once my head had got out of parkrun mode a lovely route too!

One of my very first races two years ago was the Night Run at Nostell Priory.  The night run series is hosted by National Trust and there are races up and down the country.  I regularly check the National trust page for things to do, and so when I saw the race near me I had to sign up.

The night races are great fun.  I remember that first race like it was yesterday, running through the mud in pitch black dark, laughing most of the way round and feeling so proud to have run the 8km route.  The medal was glow in the dark and J was even given one too.  I was incredibly excited for this years run.

As with the previous year J was allowed to run with me.  He gets incredibly excited whenever I put on my running shoes and I love running with him, so any race I can take him with me I do.

Getting ready to run with J

After arriving at Nostell and collecting our race number it was then a waiting game for the race to start.  The race starts at sunset and as it began to set we made our way to the start line.  J got incredibly confused during the race warm up as we walked forwards and backwards, in a 'are we going yet?' kind of way, before we knew it we were off in the dark round Nostell.

I love running night runs and watching all the lights from the hundreds of runners flashing through the dark.  Watching head torches and flashing arm bands go past you or ahead in the distance.  The faster front runners lights moving fast like a bike through the dark.  J captured some of the run with his GoPro

The course was different from the first year and in some ways much better.  The first time we got incredibly lost in some woods in the dark, but this year the course was much better sign posted and more volunteers so no one got lost.

We were greeted at the end of the race by our parkrun family and awarded our glow in the dark medal.  I cannot wait for the next night run!

This week can go down in history as the week with the lurgy.

Sunday

I really was not feeling well but felt I could not let the charity down and so took part in my first ever 10K road race.  I completed the race in 1 hour and 5 minutes which given the course and my health I was pleased with.

Monday

After a trip to the Dr for some cough medicine and dosing up on paracetamol we headed to Scarborough to visit the penguins.  SeaLife Scarborough have just opened penguin island, if you love penguins you have to go.

Tuesday

As April approaches I start looking back through old photos of my sister.  I came across this one and was so surprised at how much the girls look like my sister.  She would have been the same age as my youngest here, and I the same as my eldest.

Wednesday

I set up an Easter theme challenge for the girls using their CleverStix.  The girls love Cleverstix and really enjoyed the challenge.  As soon as I feel better I shall be adding the video to YouTube.

Thursday

Wanting to make the most of the day with just my eldest we headed to the shopping centre.  She needed new shoes and of course she wanted to see Cinderella.  Apologies to everyone in the cinema for the coughing, sneezing and nose blowing.

Friday

The week took its toll on all of us.  I had planned to go out to Nostell Priory and take part in their egg hunt but I could not move and neither could the girls.  We all felt really poorly and so a day on the sofa it was.

Saturday

My eldest is feeling better and my youngest has turned a corner.  She is still poorly but no where near as bad.  I have developed a nasty ear ache, on top of the cough and runny nose.  Whilst everything hurts I had to take the girls out so they could enjoy some fresh air.  It would not have been fair on my eldest otherwise.  I feel shocking but both girls had a lovely day at Nostell Priory.

My running friend and I decided to challenge ourselves and sign up for our first 5K run.  We picked a route that we had part run before and was at least familiar with the area, the beautiful National Trust property Nostell Priory.  National Trust are running a series of night runs and they sounded fun, so we signed up.

The furthest we had run before was 6km, but that was with some walking so we thought this would be a good challenge, Nostell also has a few inclines and muddy patches.  We checked the site before we left and noticed it said 6km.  Too late now so we headed off to the beautiful grounds

We were in the first 100 to sign up so we were given a festive Santa hat.  This caused for the obligatory pre run selfie and festive photo.

We waited for night to fall near to the start line, watching all the other runners warm up.  Sending positive thoughts that we were about to run the furthest we have ever run, when the announcer said 'nearly 7km race', I turned and looked and my friend and she at me, oh pants!

We made our way very nervously to the start line, and headed towards the back.  7km was a real challenge and we felt staying towards the back with our slow pace the better option.

Before we knew it we were off.  The first night run at Nostell Priory.

It was a real challenge.  The dark added a whole new dimension.  Unable to see the muddy puddles and shinning a torch in the dark looking for a glowing vest of a marshal or even the reflective glow stick of the route marker was exciting.  We ran through woods, fields and round the lake.  The course had some steep inclines and some great descents too.  There was plenty of mud, and some very slippy patches.  The added sense of running in a group and the support from the Marshals seemed to spur me on.

I ran through a bad stitch in my side, through the pain barrier and pushed myself through those inclines.  The first lap I completed and was so proud of myself, I thought to myself anything else is a bonus.  I made it past the house, round the lake and up the field.  I was feeling tired and in pain but at the same time I had a stride going, it wasn't fast but I was moving and not walking.  I even overtook a few people.  I kept going down the hill and back up towards the house.  Before I knew it I was on the final descent to the finish line, I could see it and I had this sudden burst of energy, I think it was the promise of a free mince pie.  My legs went for it, sprinting towards the end and then I did it.  I ran it, and I was so proud.

I might not have been the fastest but I did not come last.  I ran my first race and completed it.  I was awarded a glow in the dark medal, which is pretty cool and of course a free mince pie.  J had run with me and he even got a medal too!

The total times were

4.08miles/6.57km average 12.06miles/min in 49.03minutes

Not the fastest runner out there by a long way but it is the furthest I have ever run and I am proud of my own achievement.
