This day I love.......: mud

Finally it has stopped raining!

We were able to venture outside to play today and not only that we could do so without hats as it felt quite warm. Well warm for a Winter day!

The girls wasted no time at all coming up with a game and letting their imaginations run free. I am not 100% sure what the game involved but they were running around the garden collecting everything from sticks to pebbles.

At one point they seemed to enlist the help of spotty dog, who seemed very keen on whatever their plan was. The girls loved this and showed her what to do.

The final stages of the project seem to take place behind the wall, whatever they were doing was top secret.

The girls told me they had a surprise for me and I had to close my eyes. I reluctantly did as I was told and with a big 'ta-da' from the girls was presented with my very own cake complete with candles.

My eldest said it was a cake for Valentines day and for baby. They both had huge smiles on their faces and seemed very pleased with their creation. Luckily I did not have to eat any of it! I do love my girls and how they spent all afternoon making something for me, and for baby.

After they had presented me with my cake they went off looking for worms!

I haven't been able to get out the house as much as I would have liked recently as I have been in far too much pain. When not in pain the weather has been really terrible that no one has wanted to go very far. Today has been the first day in a long while that my pain was at a manageable level and the weather was not too bad.

The girls needed some fresh air and time to explore outside, a chance to roam free and get rid of the cob webs and so that is exactly what we did. They both wasted no time in taking advantage of the recent wet weather.

They were both so incredibly happy jumping in the puddles and running over the grass. It was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces.

I have wanted to see the Poppies at Yorkshire Sculpture park since it opened but have not been well enough to go. We decided to go on a Poppy hunt whilst exploring and playing in the mud and the girls loved seeing all the poppies.

We explored the park further and kept passing the running horse sculpture. The girls really loved this and kept galloping around the sculpture.

We loved exploring and looking at the sculptures in the park. Some had the girls giggling and others had them thinking.

It was a lovely afternoon spent outdoors, but the best part was that Grandad came with us and the girls loved having him there.

We love Messy play. The girls love getting stuck in and getting creative. They love experiencing new sights, textures and smells. They have so much fun with messy play that we do try and do so as often as possible. The problem I have at the moment is my health has limited the amount of messy play we can do. I cannot lift, I cannot twist and trying to clean up afterwards is very difficult.

When AO.com got in touch regarding the Big Month of Mess I really wanted to take part. I began looking through the activities and that is when it hit me. I am really going to struggle with this. Instead of missing out I thought I might put together a round up style post of our favourite messy play activities and hopefully at some point I will be well enough to complete one of the activities,

Indoor Snow

Our favourite Messy play activity is indoor snow. Ever since the girls were little this has been a firm favourite. Everything is great from the texture, to how it looks. It acts and feels like snow but without the cold. You can create Frozen scenes or build snowmen, it is such a wonderful thing to play with.

Gloop

Gloop has some great properties to it and the girls love the way it behaves. It is a great way to discuss melting and sinking and it only takes 2 ingredients to do

Mud

Nothing beats Mud and muddy puddles! Not sure I really need to add anything to that!

Soft and gentle Playdough

This dough is much softer than playdough and smells fantastic! A favourite for unwinding and releasing some stress, I think I enjoy this as much as the girls.

Unplanned

Sometimes the best messy play is when it just happens by accident!

This past month I have begun to love running again. You don't begin to realise how much an injury really does take it out of you. I finished June with a 5K colour run, I love colour runs as they are fun for everyone to join in and both girls had an amazing time too. I then completed one of my favourite races to date, the Leeds 10K.

I completed the 10K in a time of 1hr and 2 minutes, and whilst I would love to get a 10K under the 1hr mark I am still really proud of my achievement. I have no photos to show of the day as my phone is broken, but it is the prettiest medal I own.

My running adventure continued today with my first every mud run. I completed Race for Life Pretty Muddy with my amazing sponsor Brioche Pasquier. Last year they raised £20,000 for Cancer Research UK through their Raise Some Dough promotion. I was rather pleased to be given a Brioche Pasquier at the finish line

My friend took a photo for me as I am still without a phone. To say I was pretty muddy would be an understatement. Our shoes squelched with muddy water and the picture does not show the amount of mud in my hair or up my back, my friend was just as covered. However it was such a fun race and would love to do it again!

I am continuing with my marathon training and running the 5K park runs on a Saturday. I also have a Run or Dye event at the start of August which I am really looking forward to. Other than that I decided to keep August free as it is the school holidays and so will fit my training around my girls.

Upon returning from my muddy adventures I came home to my two daughters who continued their adventures in the garden. They decided that they wanted to be police officers and chase everyone around the garden. They used their Little Tikes castle as their base to hide in and catch everyone with their water pistols

It has been such a fun day filled with mud and adventures

Cloud dough is one of our favourite activities. I always have the ingredients in and it is quick and simple to set up, yet it keeps the girls entertained for hours. Cloud dough is 8 cups flour to 1 cup oil. You can add more or less to get the consistency as you like it. Cloud dough has the property that it is powdery but you can compress it to form shapes, balls and even cloud dough castles. It is great for exploring textures and building shapes. Both the girls love it.

Cloud dough was perfect for keeping my daughter entertained whilst it rained, but as soon as it stopped she wanted to head outside to find the muddy puddles.

We even met a couple of friends along the way

The break in the rain made for the perfect opportunity to get out and explore, it also gave us the perfect excuse to hunt for muddy puddles. My youngest and I set off to explore local woodland to see what we could find.

It wasn't long before we found what we had come for, muddy puddles. The rain from the past few days had made lots of muddy puddles which made my youngest very happy. She wasted no time in jumping and stomping through the puddles.

My youngest would have spent all day jumping in those muddy puddles and it was so lovely watching the enjoyment on her face. The dogs too also had a wonderful day, J got to dig holes and Spotty dog just enjoyed herself [can you spot her?]
