This day I love.......

August Bank holiday we made the long drive up to Scotland. I love visiting Scotland and we had chosen to stay near Loch Lomond, which is simply stunning. Our arrival on the Friday was rather late, in fact reception was closing as we arrived so we headed straight in the car after checking in to go and locate some food.

We stumbled across a pub which from the outside looked like a haunted house. In all honesty that is the best way to describe it, the girls unsure, but we headed inside anyway. Oh my word. Anyone visiting Loch Lomond has to visit the Drovers Inn. It is amazing. Inside it is full of stuffed animals. Any animal you can think of is stuffed and at the Drovers Inn, I am not kidding. Sharks hanging from the ceiling, bears in the hallway, the girls loved it. Staff wearing Kilts, even the men, it was a real Scottish pub. The Drovers Inn served proper home cooked food, good sized portions and we all enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. We stayed in Scotland for 3 nights and ate there on 2 nights!

Apologies for such a rubbish picture but the light in the Drovers is really dark, and the girls would not sit still!!

The next morning was race day. A 10K race up Glencoe! I was really excited and ready for the challenge. I had read in the race brief that the finish was down the ski slope and under the chair lift, this was in front of me when I arrived. One very steep decent!

Glen coe finish

Before the race began I was covered in midge bites. They were everywhere. I mean everywhere. The sky filled with little black  biting insects. You could tell those who had run here before as they were prepared with some midge nets/hats. Impressive but not helpful to me. I decided to just try and run fast. The start is at the top of the car park and then it is onwards to the base of the hill.

Next came a slight climb. The path was rocky stone, that which you put any weight on and it just slips from underneath you. Ankle breakers. The lady in front of me running with two Labradors, struggling with her footing. Her dogs at the same time deciding to switch sides, resulting in a cross of leads and this poor women flying into the air as her legs became trapped. I honestly thought there would be no skin on her face given the amount of air she had travelled and the surface she had landed up. I picked her up, she was a bit dazed and confused, we sorted the dogs and then ran onwards.

A lovely decent, but still on ankle breaking ground before a sharp turn upwards through the mud. This was proper mud. It looked like grass, but no your whole foot disappeared. Boggy, smelly and squelchy. I loved it. Almost impossible to run through, but I kept on going and running where I could. The hill just seemed to keep on going and before I knew it I could see the car park, but quite literally to the side of me. If I had jumped I would have landed on top of the car, although a long way down. Then I saw the ski lift and the near vertical decent. A decent on that ankle breaker rocks again. It was time to disengage brain and just go for it.

Lots of comments were made that we should have had climbing gear for that decent, but either way no injuries occurred and we all made it down.

Despite all the midge bites I had loved it. I think this is what made me decide to run more trail and fell. I had had so much fun.

A short drive back to the lodge and then we were ready to explore around Loch Lomond.

We stumbled across Falls of Falloch, and they were breathtaking.

The girls wanted to see where I had run, so we took a drive up to Glencoe and cheered on the last remaining Ultra runners before exploring the local area.

It was such a beautiful afternoon, simply walking and taking in the views. Watching the girls chase each other and Little Man exploring all the different textures.

Sunday was our full final day at Loch Lomond and so we decided to explore our holiday village.

The girls played in the playground and J found plenty to keep him occupied, even trying to remove a stick from the Loch.

Although we did not really go anywhere it was such a lovely day. Sometimes a simple day is the best thing to do. The girls chose where to eat given it was our last night and they both picked the Drovers Inn!

We had decided to break up our way home by stopping at Luss.

Luss was really beautiful to walk round, but we seemed to hit it with a lot of tourists. Little Man has a bit of a duck obsession so wanted to stay near to the Loch to see the ducks. We managed to bribe him away with an ice cream. The graveyard was full of fascinating history and the girls were really interested about the past and what had happened. It was actually really interesting walking around and learning more about the history of Luss.

This weekend was about getting outdoors and exploring Loch Lomond and surrounding areas. We spent quality time together playing outside, and making many memories. The girls love Scotland and we cannot wait to visit again. This time with more midge repellent!

With the sun shining on a bank holiday Monday we wanted to make the most of our family time and headed of to explore. Our criteria was simple, a place for a picnic, great views, a nice easy walk and not too far away. Living in Yorkshire this was easily achieved.

We are very lucky that Yorkshire water are one of the biggest land owners and that their land is accessible for the public to use. After a twenty minute journey we arrived at Winscar reservoir and had no problems finding some where to park, even on the glorious bank holiday. Parking was free which was another bonus.

Little man decide to have a nap whilst we walked round the reservoir looking for a picnic spot. The walk was calm and peaceful as we listened to the waves on the water. The views breathtaking.

There was a slight wind but the views more than made up for this. The girls perplexed as to why people seemed so small.

After an easy walk we stopped for our picnic by the shores of the reservoir. The girls silent and watching the water, the ducks and general goings on of the reservoir edge. Simply taking it all in.

It is not often we get to spend time together as a five and it was the perfect bank holiday doing soon.

As our picnic drew to an end, we dusted off the crumbs from the picnic blanket and begin a slow walk back round the reservoir edge. The sun setting made for an amazing sight across the water.

The reservoir was incredibly peaceful and it is hard to believe that it is so close to our house. The girls enjoyed exploring somewhere new and having a picnic with me and their daddy. A perfect bank holiday.

As we drove home I thought to myself that I will be coming back here to walk the dogs and to go for a run, it was a truly wonderful place to explore and discover.

Later this week my youngest daughter turns 4!  I cannot quite believe it to be honest, time seems to have really flown by.  She wanted a party for all of her friends from nursery so we headed to the local soft play.  The girls enjoyed running around with their friends and it was lovely to watch everyone having fun.

Little man also greeted us and had a good look around and what appears to be a think about his sisters party! It won't be long before he is also running around and probably chasing his sisters!

The afternoon seemed to go really quickly and it wasn't long before it was time to sing happy birthday.   This has to be one of my favourite photos of today, I just love how happy they both are

We all had a wonderful time celebrating her 4th birthday and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came.  You all made her day really special!

The bank holiday is almost upon us and with it many of us like to get away for the long weekend. There are lots of great places to visit close to home, those lucky enough can make a day trip and others can take advantage of the long weekend and turn it into a family holiday.

I have a few favourite places I like to visit, some require a longer stay but all are equally as beautiful. Here are my top 4 places to visit this bank holiday

1. Scarborough

Scarborough has all the tradition of a family beach holiday. Clean beautiful sandy beaches, long beach walks, traditional steam trains and colourful beach huts. The beaches are clean and several are dog friendly. Rock pools scatter among the beach making a perfect hunting ground for the young and old alike. Nearby cafés welcome dogs inside and are generally well priced and with good food. There is plenty of parking near to the sea front and plenty to see if you fancied more of a walk. I would highly recommend visiting the Sea life centre and riding the steam train.

2. LochGoilhead

Wonderful crystal clear water perfect for taking a stroll around. Most of it is pushchair friendly, but due to the pebbled shore front others become a little bumpy. The scenery is truly fantastic and unspoilt. Rural pubs make a perfect retreat for a bite to eat and take in the breath taking views.
beautiful views
3. Brighton pier

Whilst the beach at Brighton is pebbled there is still plenty to do on the sea front. A day could be spent exploring the pier, riding the huge variety of rides or simply watching the sea. A good selection of food outlets are on the pier, my advice though is to take a stroll round the corner and treat yourself to a pancake at the Creperie , utterly amazing.

Watching the sea

4. Tintagel Castle

Looking out to see at Tintagel Castle you would be forgiven in thinking you were far away abroad.  The sea is a beautiful turquoise colour and the sun seems to shine across the bay.  The area has a sense of tranquillity about it.  Plenty to see and explore, with historic ruins and a gorgeous beach.  Perfect for a family day out.

How do you plan on spending your bank holiday?

I have not been paid or received any incentive to write this post.

After a rather long journey due partly to bank holiday traffic and an accident which closed the road for 5 hours we arrived in Bonnie Scotland to enjoy our Bank holiday weekend together.  We were staying at the Drimsynie Estate Holiday village near Lochgoilhead.  The holiday was booked over a year ago and the girls were excited to be on holiday with Grandma and Grandad.

Lochgoilhead is simply breath taking.  It was so peaceful and we just wanted to spend our time admiring the view.

Needless to say we spent our bank holiday walking and exploring Lochgoilhead and the surrounding area.  The girls and the dogs loved exploring the shores and splashing in the Loch

Exploring Lochgoilhead

It was lovely to watch the dogs so happy, running around and jumping through the water.  Stopping to dig or follow the scent of some creature.  You could see the delight on both their faces as they explored and ran.

The fresh air and the exploring agreed with the girls too.  They loved exploring the shoreline and looking at all the different shells

The girls didn't want to leave.  They loved having Grandma and Grandad staying with us.  It was lovely just to have some time with each other.

On our journey home we stopped at Invernary.  This is a lovely little fishing town which has some beautiful shops and a castle.

Castle at Invernary

We chose not to go and explore inside the castle but it did look stunning.  The village had lots of lovely shops and museums but with a 5 hour journey ahead of us we decided to have some cake and then set off back.  Well it would be rude not to the cake looked fantastic!

We had such a wonderful holiday, peaceful and also gave us the chance to get out and explore.  The girls are already asking when they can go to Scotland again.

This bank holiday weekend has been pretty good so far, the first for the weather it could not have been better.  I think that is our summer heat wave over now though.  The second it was Star Wars day and May the fourth will always be with me, for the third reason.  It was my youngest first birthday.  A whole year!  I cannot believe she is 1 already, it really has flown by.

I decided to do things a little different with this post and group 3 days into one because the weekend was spent in party mode, getting ready and celebrating.  Our celebrations began with my youngest opening presents just before her swimming lesson

She enjoyed her swimming, and was ever so tired so she had a power nap

My youngest enjoyed playing dress up and playing on her percussion table which was her birthday present from Mummy and Daddy.  I think this is possibly the coolest looking 1 year old

On Sunday I had the enormous task of making a ladybird cake for our ladybird party, first job was to bake 2 black cakes.  I used a Madeira cake recipe and gel food colouring to dye the cake black.  Whilst it was cooking the girls and I had some fun in the garden.

The girls helped me to crumble the cake into a bowl and add heaped spoons of chocolate butter cream to the mixture until we had a fudge like consistency.  I wrapped this in ball in cling-film and placed in the fridge, whilst I prepared the Madeira cake mixture but this time with red food colouring.

Once the red cake mixture was complete, I used the black dough from the fridge and rolled out different shaped balls.  I placed these black balls into a greased cake tin and then covered them in the red cake mixture.  I placed the cake mixture in the oven and crossed my fingers the cake would work.

After the girls went to bed I then iced and decorated the cake and was rather pleased, I just hoped the inside had worked too. My Mum helped me to set up the decorations ready for tomorrow.

On Bank holiday Monday the weather was perfect.  Our bouncy castle arrived nice and earlier and our guests all seemed to enjoy the sunshine, a beautiful ladybird party.

This day I love May the forth, fifth and Sith.

I purchased the ladybird party decorations from Party pieces, the girls dresses are from a wonderful and very talented lady at wild things funky little dresses, the bouncy castle company I could not recommend high enough.  Our invites were from Simply to impress and I would not hesitate to use them again, as they were simply stunning and came beautifully presented.
