This day I love.......

At 16 weeks old Little man seems to finally be on top of his colic.  It is noted that around 12-14 weeks most babies grow out of colic, and whilst this could be this case it might also be down to a number of products we found to help.

The girls never suffered with colic, so I never understood what it was like until Little Man started with it.  It is horrible to watch your child in so much pain and do nothing to console them.  You feel helpless and completely useless.  Their little bodies twisting in discomfort you just want to cuddle them until the pain subsides.  I am so relieved that we seem to be at the other end now, both for us and for Little man.  Our colic journey did lead us to discover some great items which really did help.

Swoon bubble

The Swoon bubble from Babymoov was a real lifesaver.  The deep seat holds Little Man so he feels snug and secure, as if he is held.  The seat is wipe clean which is also great with a baby who has reflux as well as colic.  The seat can be adjusted to a more upright position or if asleep laid down, and the swinging motion helped to relieve those colic symptoms.

Little Man seemed to always begin the bad parts of his colic around 5pm, which would also coincide with cooking dinner.  We have the Babymoov swoon bubble in the kitchen so at this time he can watch us getting dinner ready and then the swinging motion would send him to sleep, and help with his colic symptoms.  I am not sure how we would have coped without the swoon bubble, probably eaten a lot more takeaways with a very grumpy unsettled baby.

Cosy dream

The Cosy dream is also a Babymoov product.  Cosy dream is placed in babies bed, the breathable mattress providing comfort and support, whilst also preventing flat head.  The adjustable sides give baby comfort so they feel as if they are being held.  The positioning of the legs helps to aid digestion and reduces colic.

I was a little dubious at first to if this would make any difference, but since using it Little Man only wakes once in the night and is much more content when sleeping.  It is machine washable and does dry very quick which means you can wash and dry in the same day.

Shnuggle

I found a warm bath before bed would really help little man.  Making the water deep so the warmth of the water was over his tummy seemed to really help his pain.  It would also help with releasing some of the trapped wind, which in turn helped his discomfort.  The Shnuggle bath uses less water than a conventional baby bath, is much easier to hold baby and allows the water to cover babies tummy, which helps with colic.

Little man has had a bath every night as it would really help with his colic in an evening.  He now associates his bath with sleep and upon leaving his bath starts rubbing his eyes to get ready for bed.

Dummy

In all honesty I never wanted to give Little Man a dummy, although now I am glad I did.  When his colic got really painful he found great comfort in sucking his dummy.  You would see his body begin to twist and then the dummy move rapidly and the pain would disappear right in front of your eyes.  Almost melting away.  It is not a sleep aid, but is used when he is in discomfort and needs that extra relief.  I am so glad we gave him something to help.

Nuby 360

Little man not only suffered with colic but also silent reflux.  He has numerous medications and special milk in order to try and keep his milk down, and to reduce the discomfort he feels.  The new 360 bottles from Nuby have been a great help as they help to reduce both colic and reflux.  The bottle is unique in that it can be used anyway up, as it has a special straw/pipe inside the bottle.  This therefore means there is less build up of air so colic is reduced and because baby can be kept upright to feed it helps to reduce reflux.  I have made a video showing the 360 in action and it will be coming live soon on my YouTube channel.

When little man was a few weeks old I wrote my newborn essentials list.  Little Man is fast approaching 3 months old, the time is just flying past, and with it we have discovered a few more items that we now could not be without.  As with the newborn list these are things we probably would never have thought about but have really made our lives easier.

Poddle Pod / Toddle Pod

Neither of my girls would nap, and my eldest dropped all day time sleep from 6 months.  Little man however seems to like sleep but like the warmth and security of cuddling.  Whilst this is great and I have no objection giving him as many cuddles as he wants, I do also have 2 other children who equally need my love and attention.  There are times therefore that Little man has to nap when not held.

We had been really struggling with this, as understandably Little man wanted holding.  The security and closeness was something he needed.  Poddle Pod has given Little man the security he needs whilst giving me the freedom to play with the girls.

Poddle Pod gentle cuddles Little man whilst he is taking his naps.  We don't use it over night, as it is only recommended for day time use, but it is perfect.  It is really light weight so we can carry it around the house.  The Poddle Pod is available in two sizes, the Poddle Pod is designed to be used with babies aged approximately 0-6 months. The Toddle Pod is then used with babies approximately 6-36 months of age.  We have the Toddle Pod as I wanted it to last a little longer, but Little man would have equally been as happy in the Poddle Pod.

The size is great and it fits neatly into a moses basket/crib.  This means we can carry the Poddle Pod to the room we need it in and then place it in the moses basket if we need to.  We also use our Poddle Pod for tummy time.  Little Man loves looking at the pattern on the Poddle Pod when it is tummy time.  There are a great selection of designs to choose from and even a new wipe clean, which is great if you have a sicky baby.  The covers are also machine washable.

Poddle Pod has made a huge difference to us.  I know Little man has a safe and secure place to take his day naps and he seems only too happy to drift to sleep.

Knee Pal

I simply cannot believe how something so simple has made so much difference to us.  Knee Pal is quite simply a cushion for your knees.  It is made of a fully waterproof polyurethane, which means it can be used almost any where.

In a single day to day, I use it for changing nappies when I am kneeling on the floor, at bath time as it is water proof and when kneeling on the floor to get the dog food out the cupboard.  I take it to the swimming pool with us so I can kneel on the floor to dry the girls feet after swimming lessons.  I even carry it with us if taking photos so I can kneel down on the ground to get closer to the girls level.

It really has made such a difference.  Knee Pal is incredibly soft and ergonomic for your back too.  There are so many uses at home, from gardening to DIY and playing with baby, but because it is lightweight it is also portable so you can use it when out and about too.  Knee pal is easy to clean and dries really fast.  There are currently 4 colours to choose from.

Cosy dream

For the first few weeks Little man would only settle when held upright.  When laid flat he would scrunch, twist and arch his back.  He would then be sick.  A few times he started choking and we had to really pat his back to get him breathing again.  Sleeping was therefore a really scary time, either lie him down and risk choking and sick or pick him up and try and stay awake to sleep upright.  The Dr diagnosed him with both colic and silent reflux.

The Cosy dream really helped us transition him from sleeping in our arms to sleeping in his own bed.  The Positioning roll is made from micro bead and can be Velcro into the correct position for your baby.  Placing under babies bum and the arms form a support along babies side.  Baby then feels like they are still in your arms.  The great thing is his legs are then kept in a slightly lifted position, as if they are over your arms.

Little man finds the Cosy dream really comfortable and since we have introduced it sleeps the majority of nights from 10 until 5/6.  His colic seems to have disappeared, and his startle reflex is reduced.  He is kept in the optimum position on his back and because the cosy dream is really light weight I can easily move it to be where we need it.

Swoon bubble

I never had a swing chair with my eldest daughter, instead we had a rocker and a baby bouncer.  Both girls loved these.  Little man however is sick in the bouncer, I think due to the reflux but I needed something for him.  Somewhere where he could practise focusing and reaching out for objects.  A space for him to get a different perspective on the world and somewhere where he can watch us all.  I love holding him, and placing him in a sling but sometimes this is not practical, when cooking dinner for example.

The swoon bubble is a swing chair.  It can be operated via mains or with batteries and there is very little assembly.  What assembly there is is really quick to do, takes less than 5 minutes. The chair has 5 swing speeds, but Little man is more than happy with the first two settings.  The timer can be set for 8, 15 or 30 minutes.  There are 8 lullabies with 3 different volumes and it scrolls through each lullaby in turn.  When not in use the Swoon bubble is easy to fold and store away.

Little man loves his swing,  It seems to soothe his tummy, perhaps this is because he feels supported and snug or that the position of the chair can be adjusted to give a more reclined seat for short naps.  The seat does appear to be lovely and deep.  The head rest can be removed and the 5 point harness moved also, making it perfect as he grows.

I love watching how fascinated he is with the hanging animals on the toy arch.  He watches them and I know he is working out how to play with them.  The feel of the swoon bubble is really elegant and it is also soft to the touch.  I am not sure where we would be without our swoon bubble.  It has made such a difference to both Little man and to us, and is certainly a must buy item.

Some items in this list have been send for review, others purchased.  This list is my honest opinion.

Thing 3 is set to make their appearance into our lives any day now.  After our 36 weeks scan it now feels like we can finish those last minute preparations

Stock Up on Essentials

I intend to use a mixture of both cloth and disposable nappies.  I have washed and strip washed all cloth nappies and got them all ready in the nursery.  With disposable nappies you should be prepared to be using as many as twelve per day and these are all ready in the nursery.  You can never have too many.  We have a moses basket downstairs, which was kindly gifted to us by a friend and we have also been gifted clothing bundles, to see us through the first 3 months.

Prepare the House

Nesting instincts seem to kick in before baby arrives and you find yourself cleaning everything from skirting boards to behind the radiators.  We have finished the nursery and built the cot, even though baby will be sleeping in our room for the first 6 months it still helps to be prepared.  J is used to the arrival of babies but this will be a first for spotty dog.  We have been trying to prepare our pets for Thing 3 arrival as much as we can, although I think J already knows.

Pack a Hospital Bag

I posted earlier and also on YouTube about how to pack a hospital bag.  It is a good idea to have one ready as you never know when labour will begin.  My hospital bag is ready and I have also ensured my husband knows where it is, just in case.

Think Ahead to Save Time in the Future

When you are looking after a child, it can be difficult to find time to do anything else.  I have had to plan for what will happen if I go into labour whilst the girls are in school.  Put plans in place for childcare if it is during the night.  Not only this but also thinking about the first few days with a newborn.  We have frozen meals in the freezer and plans in place to help with the girls.  It really does help to prepare in advance for the arrival of a new baby.

There are many posts at the moment about essentials for back to school but I wanted to focus on one for us parents.  We spend the holidays getting everything ready for the children that we often forget the essentials we need in order to make those school runs operate smoothly.  Here it is my Top 5 essentials:

1, Post it notes

I cannot live without Post it notes, I use them to remind me of all the important things.  If there is a permission slip that needs taking back to school I write on a post it note and stick the note by the door handle.  Then in the morning when I go to unlock the door to go to school I see the note and it reminds me to pick up the permission slip from the table [which is by the door but I forget to look or am in a rush to see].  This works for every important thing I need to remember for school.

2. Sticky tape

Your child will make 101 different master pieces within the first week of school.  For some reason all of ours come unstuck on the journey home.  Sticky tape is my essential item to stop those tears and to repair said master piece.

3. Tape dispenser

Invest in a good tape dispenser, not only for point number 2 but also you will find the number of parties invited to increase.  Therefore the number of presents that need wrapping increase as well.  Investing in a good tape dispenser saves a lot of time.

What are your essentials for Back to School?

Whilst I was sent a selection of samples from 3M all words are my own opinion.
