This day I love.......

March started as February left off, snow. Then more snow. Just for good measure more snow. Races were cancelled and it was simply cold. The thought of long runs made even less appealing but training continued. A 21.5 miles run on ice and snow, took longer than expected but was lots of fun too.

The majority of races in March were cancelled. One of the few that did go ahead was Retford Half. It was freezing cold, then at random points on course boiling hot. It made for difficult running. A rather undulating route, is perhaps the most polite way to put it, I wasn't a fan. I am not sure I was geared up to enjoy the race before it started and perhaps this contributed to the fact I didn't enjoy it. Who knows, either way I won't be entering again. On the positive side I did meet a rather lovely lady and we spent our last few miles together.

Training also meant I had to some times fit a run into an already busy day. Often this meant taking Little Man out in his pushchair. Incredibly hard work as he wants to stop to look at everything, but at the end of the day it is better than nothing.

I have also been trying to do more cross training in March. Spin classes and swimming. I really enjoy the spin class at my local gym, but it is often booked up so I haven't been as much as I wanted to.

You may also notice on the bike an orange bottle. March was an amazing month for me in that I became an ambassador for Active Root. The orange bottle is an active root bottle. I have been using active root on all my long distance training and will be also using on my marathon. You can read more in my review here

As March continued training got harder. Having to reshuffle days around snow days. Re organising cancelled races, and trying whenever and wherever possible to fit runs in. I struggled with my long runs and began to doubt the marathon.

My eldest daughter decided she wanted to start running adult parkrun again. She is such a strong girl and also very determined. Her running is fantastic, and when she wants to sprint I cannot keep up with her. It provides great speed training for me when she does. She has run 2 parkruns this month and on both has got herself a PB. I could not be more proud of her.

I also became an ambassador for Just Strong Clothing. I love the ethos of Just Strong clothing, as they want to empower women from all walks of life to be strong. I aim to do this for my daughters, to motivate them to be strong and so I am really pleased to be an ambassador for Just Strong Clothing. You can use my code LEYLABRO10 for a discount on any orders placed on their store.

March drew to an end with good social training runs with great friends and of course Easter. It also brings with it the realisation that in April I run two marathons. Nerves are now starting to kick in. Training has not gone according to plan that is for sure. Let's just hope I have done enough.

We went to sleep watching the snow fall and woke up next morning to a second snow day. School cancelled once again. Potty training put on hold and three children to entertain with no where to go. Our street had been turned into an ice rink. Not safe to walk on or drive a car on. Little Man wasn't too fussed about venturing outside and instead opted to build towers with the food tins.

We did venture out briefly after lunch but no one wanted to stay out for too long. The snow was icy and not as much fun to play in. J didn't seem to mind and was still as confused about where a snowball disappears to.

Whilst I got dinner ready the girls and Little Man decided to work together to complete the Ravensburger Paddington Bear Giant Floor Puzzle. The Giant Floor puzzle has 60 large pieces. Big enough for even Little Man to have a go at building.

He had a few attempts but mostly watched his bigger sisters put the pieces together. The pieces were bright, bold and really colourful. It is perhaps no wonder he was so interested in watching the jigsaw take shape.

Little Man loved the finished floor puzzle. He loved he could sit on it. He loved all the bright colours and patterns. He kept looking over at his sisters and smiling. I don't think he could quite believe what they had done. He was so happy. It was lovely watching the three of them play together especially given their age ranges I was surprised that something could keep all three of them entertained together.

Our question for the evening was would there be a third snow day?

The Paddington puzzle was sent for review, all words are my own opinion.

Last Wednesday we awoke to a snow day. School was cancelled and I had three children at home to entertain, something I had not planned for. I am slowly introducing the concept of potty training to Little Man and a snow day could not have come at a worse time. I put potty training on hold for the day and when Grandad made a surprise visit we went out to play in the snow.

We got the sledges out and made the most of a quite street. Something we have never managed to do before due to cars speeding up our street and the extra space plus the fact we lived on a hill made for some great fun. J wanted to get in on the action, he loves snow. He still cannot figure out where the snowball goes when you throw it and spends ages digging in the snow looking for it.

Once we had lost feeling in our fingers and toes we came inside to warm up. Little Mans birthday was on the Friday and the girls wanted to bake him a cake, or find an excuse to eat icing.

The girls, baked and decorated their cake for their brother. A true master piece of sugar and featuring every colour known to man. Still they were proud of their creation and I am pretty sure Little Man was just happy he could eat it.

That evening we got all cosy and decided to play a board game. The girls wanted to play Enchanted Forest. Enchanted Forest is a board game aimed at ages 4+, and tests a persons memory skills.

The girls began to move their pieces around the board according to the dice. Their aim to see what each tree was hiding.

Underneath each tree, there are 13, is a picture from a fairy tale. The aim of the game is to find the tree which matches that of the card in the castle. It is then a race to the castle to uncover the tree and show to all the other players.

There was lots of sneaky tree peaking. My eldest worked out if she went to the castle we assumed she knew where the matching tree was and kept tricking us. My youngest kept the picture on the tree a secret and would use her whole body to shield us as she took a look. There was then a race to the castle as soon as one of the girls found the right treasure under the tree.

Once you have identified the right tree you turn the card over and the hunt begins again, unless of course you can remember which tree holds this treasure.

The Enchanted Forest game continued into the evening. Snow was falling again outside and we had a feeling a second snow day would be on the cards.

Enchanted Forest was sent to us for review, all words are my own opinion

The girls had requested snow for Christmas. Snow. How on earth do you make it snow? Always up for the challenge I looked at snow based holidays, only we don't ski or snowboard. None of us do. I have a few times when I was a lot younger but nothing recently. Was it worth travelling to a ski resort when no of us would be skiing? Would there be plenty for us to do? To keep the whole family entertained? What about Christmas?

Our flight was on Christmas Eve. A fact the girls absolutely loved. They looked out of the plane window eager to catch a glimpse of Father Christmas. They were mightily disappointed when they didn't spot him but I did explain we flew in the day time. In fact we flew very early in the morning. A 2 hour flight and a 2 hour coach journey to resort. When we landed there was a distinct lack of snow, but as the coach wound it's way up the mountains it began to resemble a winter wonderland. Little man asleep and the girls in awe. Blue skies and white snow, simply beautiful

Our base for the week was the Mark Warner Hotel Berangere, a wooden chalet hotel at 1,800m and situated next door to the ski slope. Our balcony overlooked the mountains and we watched people going up the chair lift straight outside our window. If we had got any closer we would have been on the slope.

The room itself was pretty basic. Hair dryer and safe, TV with 6 English channels and twin beds. You paid really for the views and proximity to the slope. We were not complaining though. The views were out of this world and we planned to spend as little time as possible in side.

Christmas eve seemed to just pass us by. Tired from travelling and wanting to just settle in, we took the first day easy and made full use of High tea and dinner at the hotel. An early night as we watched fireworks from our balcony, and the girls wondered if Father Christmas would visit on holiday.

Does Father Christmas visit whilst on holiday?

He does indeed!

He left each of the children a few small and light gifts at the bottom of their beds. The girls were ecstatic when they saw them and could not stop bouncing around. Christmas presents opened and it was time to explore and spend the day playing in the snow.

Which is exactly what we did. The hotel loaned us some sledges and we spent out entire day sledging down the side of the mountain in the dedicated area. All 3 children loved it. Laughing and giggling all morning.

Lunch was not provided by the hotel but there was so many places to eat it wasn't an issue. Pancakes and chocolate spread for lunch before heading back to the slope again. Both girls didn't want to do anything else and that was fine by me. Everyone was happy and having fun.

We had to be back at the hotel for 4.15 as a special guest was coming for High tea. The girls had spotted some snowy footprints from the chimney that morning, as well as the crumbs from a mince pie and half drunk glass of milk but the fire place. A special guest indeed made his way up the ski slope to the hotel, and sat themselves by the fire to keep warm.

He called out the names of all the children staying at the hotel and handed each one a present. Such a wonderful thing to do. The girls loved it.

After cake and a hot chocolate we returned to our hotel rooms to get ready for dinner and to have a play with some of the toys from Christmas. Christmas dinner was 5 courses and no washing up. Win for me and for the kids too!

We discovered that you could purchase a family lift pass at a fraction of the cost of a ski pass. Little Man was free as he was under 5, adults are 59 euros for 6 days unlimited use and children are 43 euros. This also included entry to the ice caves at 3,200m. Given you can then use the chair lifts to access other areas of Les Deux Alpes and visit other attractions we thought it was well worth the money.

We decided to make the most of our passes and use them to go all the way to 3,200m and visit the ice caves. The weather when we set off was clear but as the lift got higher up the mountain the winds started. Not only the winds but we ended up with blanket snow. It was so fast we couldn't see out hands in front of our faces, the wind was harsh and the cold stung.

Part way up the mountain you have to stop and acclimatise. We later found out that at this point they should have stopped us from going any higher up the mountain, as it can cause issues to the under 2s ears. We were not aware so after a 20 minute play in the snow we made our way further up the mountain in the next chair lift to the ice caves.

We exited to the lifts and the wind and snow were even stronger. We couldn't see any signs or anything that looked like the cave, but we did spot a cafe so headed there for a hot chocolate and some cake. The owner kindly pointed where we needed to head to and after warming up braved the cold once more.

The entrance to the ice caves are behind a small wooden hut in the middle of the snow. There seemed to be nothing surrounding it apart from snow. We did wonder if we were in the right place. Braving the cold we headed to the wooden hut and were directed behind.

The entrance to the cave appeared and once inside it felt warm, sheltered from the wind and the snow outside. Statues had been carved into the ice, everything from dinosaurs and dragons to palm trees and jellyfish. A real assortment of figures, each lit with coloured light. The children loved it. Spotting the different carvings and exploring the caves. We went round a few times, not wanting to go back outside into the cold. It didn't take long to explore but it was certainly worth it.

The ride back down the mountain was very windy indeed. The girls sitting still not wanting to make the lift sway and given most people skied down the mountain we had a capsule to ourselves. My youngest asked what the toys were down below and we had to explain they were people. The girls loved watching the snow blow outside and the people far below us. My fear of heights really didn't enjoy it and I was counting down the seconds until I was back on solid ground.

Our lift passes were great. We used them to explore nearby villages, and it gave us so much freedom to explore.

The resort had put on a schedule of activities over the Christmas period and every early evening we would make the most of these. There would always be a 'secret' word and upon saying the secret word or action you were given a stick of marshmallows to toast on the open fire. We did have one day where it rained and so this wasn't possible but on this day we stayed at the hotel. Given no one was skiing either that day either meant we really did not miss out on anything outdoors.

The activities varied from painting to making candles and snow-globes. There was so much to do and it really passed the time from 4 until 6 when it was time to head back for dinner. Most days there was also a parade which walked through the resort itself with a variety of characters, one day it was frozen themed. Father Christmas made appearances and so did the husky, it was a real hub of activity for families.

We discovered a playground close to the hotel and given most people were skiing it gave us the playground to ourselves on most days. What can be more fun than slides in the snow. Sliding down into fresh snow or a seesaw into the snow!

We had a real mixed bag of weather. One day it rained and this meant we were forced to stay inside, as the sledges would not work in the snow, and no one was skiing either. A few days blue skies and sunshine and a few days of heavy snow. A mixture of everything. On the heavy snow days we had snowball fights, made snow angels and went on the sledges. On blue sky days we would explore nearby villages with our lift passes and go for walks around the resorts.

During one of our explorations we found a donkey farm. You could book rides but we couldn't find anyone to book with. There were husky rides, but they sold out before we arrived and snow mobiles which the kids wanted to do but unfortunately Little Man was poorly and rushed to the emergency doctor so we were unable to take part. In fact there was so much to do we didn't manage to fit it in in one week. We had wanted to go to the cinema, the museum and bowling but ran out of time.

One of our favourite activities was a horse ride through the snow. A short walk from our hotel and we were greeted by a beautiful horse and sleigh. Wrapped up in warm blankets we rode through the mountains and forest. Beautiful winter scenes unfolding all around us. Guided by the most beautiful dog, we headed up into the mountains.

The sleigh stopped at a farm, where we got out and were ushered inside to be met with hot chocolate and cake. There seemed to be a theme to this holiday, not that any of us were complaining. After warming up we headed back to the sleigh to be greeted by the farm dogs, who seemed to love the attention from the kids before climbing back into the sleigh to return home.

My children's faces were priceless. They were loving every second. Laughing the whole time and taking everything in. Snuggled all together under a warm blanket, it was just a perfect winter treat.

The shops in resort closed just after lunch until early afternoon, but once we discovered this we planned our activities accordingly. Either sledging just after lunch or taking the lift to a near by village to explore once they opened again. There was never a time when we didn't have something to do or a time when we wished we were skiing. Our days and nights were filled with fun and laughter. The girls experienced new things and my youngest discovered a love of ice skating.

Our week passed by so quickly. Time really does fly when you are having fun. None of us have any regrets about not skiing, in fact I am not sure we would have managed to fit everything in if we had.

Leaving resort was really hard, saying goodbye to those mountains and the views. I can see why people want to return each year. Leaving on New Years Eve was perhaps for the best, it ended 2017 perfectly.

To answer my initial questions:

Was it worth travelling to a ski resort when no of us would be skiing? Absolutely

Would there be plenty for us to do? More than enough, we had so much to do we didn't manage to fit it all in.

To keep the whole family entertained? I have never seen my kids laugh and smile so much. All 3 of them loved every second of it.

What about Christmas? Christmas was magical. Father Christmas came. We spent the day playing in snow and had a 5 course Christmas dinner cooked for us. Even had access to British TV to watch those all important Christmas films!

I would love to visit again, or even visit another 'ski' resort. To have snow over Christmas was just magical and such an experience for the children. We made so many wonderful memories and upon our return got to have a Christmas/New Year day party with our family! Just perfect.

I booked and paid for this holiday with Mark Warner, and have not been asked to write this post.

I sat in bed last night and watched the snow fall, knowing that should it settle I would have two very excited girls in the morning.  At 6.30 this morning I was woken to an excited voice shouting 'SNOW' as loud as they could.  My prediction of excitement could have been slightly underestimated.  The girls gazed out of the window in absolute awe of the snow.

Today was one of those days when the girls just got dressed without messing around.  They were keen to get out in the snow, even if we had only a small amount.  Still some snow to them is better than no snow.

the girls on their sledges

We had huge squeals of delighted and lots of laughing from both girls as they played out in the snow.  They had snowball fights and made a snowman but their favourite was sitting in their sledges and zooming down the hill.

fun in the snow

They thoroughly enjoyed themselves playing out in the snow and came inside with red cheeks and big smiles.

This day I love a snow day

The school holidays have officially started and it can often be tricky to keep the children entertained especially with the excitement of Christmas.  Christmas can also be quite an expensive time for some families and so with that in mind I have put together an inexpensive winter themed activity for each day of the school holiday.

The activities can be done on any day and are for inspiration for ideas; you could do more than one on a given day or take more than one day for other activities.  All activities can be done inside and whilst enjoying a nice warm drink for you and a warm cup of Arla Big Milk for the little ones.

For some of the activities you will need some empty bottles of Arla Big Milk.  Arla Big Milk is fresh whole cows’ milk, finely filtered for freshness and enriched with key vitamins and nutrients. Containing iron which contributes to cognitive development, vitamin D for normal bone development and naturally rich in calcium for the development of strong bones and teeth, Arla Big Milk has been developed to meet the needs to children aged from one to five as part of a healthy diet. The department of health recommends that, from the age of one, children move onto fresh cows’ milk, as well as supplementing their diets with daily vitamins A and D and iron, so Arla developed Big Milk to support both needs for toddlers.

1. Snowflake Mobile [21st]

- White felt/white paper
- Lolly pop sticks
- String

Use the white felt or white paper to make snowflakes.  Attach each snowflake to different length string and then attach them to the lollipop sticks.  The snowflakes hang from the lollipop sticks to create a mobile.

2. Indoor snow [22nd]

Cornflour
Glitter
Baby oil

This is one of our all-time favourite activities. In a bowl mix 2 cups cornflower, 1/3 a cup of vegetable oil and add a good sprinkle of glitter.  Mix really well.  This will then have the texture and feel of freshly fallen powder snow to play with which my girls really love.

3. Salt dough decorations [23rd]

1 cup salt
1 cup flour
1/2 cup water

Add salt to flour and then slowly add the water to form a dough.  If it is too sticky add more flour.  You can make any shape you desire; the only limitation is your imagination.  Once happy with decorations, lay the shapes on a baking sheet and cook at 100 degrees C for 2-3 hours, turning half way through if the shapes are thick.  Once baked, leave to cool and then decorate using ordinary paint.

4. Reindeer food [Christmas eve]

Oats
Glitter
Indoor snow

Mix everything together in a bowl and sprinkle outside on Christmas Eve so that Father Christmas can find your house.

5. Wrapping paper stars [Christmas Day]

Wrapping paper
Star template
Scissors

Using a template of a star cut out stars from wrapping paper.  Fold the stars in half outwards on the points and inwards on the inverts, then unfold and shape to make wrapping paper stars.  This is a perfect way to reuse wrapping paper.

6. Giant cardboard gingerbread house [26th]

Cardboard boxes
Paint
Any craft items
Decorations

All you really need is a cardboard box and your imagination.  Children love playing in boxes and making dens.  Use your imagination and decorate a box of any size converting it to a cardboard gingerbread house.  For more inspiration

follow Thisdayilove's board gingerbread house - cardboard on Pinterest.

7. Snow Paint [27]

Shaving Cream
White school glue
Peppermint extract
Glitter

If you would like the paint to be cold like snow place shaving cream in the fridge overnight but this is optional.  Mix equal parts of shaving cream to glue.  Add glitter to make it sparkly and a few drops of peppermint extract for that Christmas smell.  Let the little ones create magical snowy pictures.  When dry the snow has a real 3D feel and texture to it, just like snow.

8.Ginger bread play dough [28]

1/4 cup black treacle
3/4 cup Cornflour
4 tsp Baking Soda
2 tsp Water
2 tbl Vegetable oil
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Allspice

2 Tbl + 2 tsp Flour

Mix the cornflour, baking soda, cinnamon, and allspice, then add the water, oil, and treacle.  Finally add flour and keep adding flour until the dough is no longer sticky.  Finally add flour and keep adding flour until the dough is no longer sticky. Then let your little ones play and use their creativity to create shapes, nativity scenes etc.– whatever they fancy!

9. Snow man lantern [29]

Empty Arla Big Milk bottle
Fairy lights
Felt pens

These are a wonderful way to light up a winter night.  There are some great examples, with full instructions, on this Pinterest board.

Follow Thisdayilove's board Milk Bottle Lanterns on Pinterest.

10. Ice painting [30]

Block ice [freeze water in a Tupperware container]

Tray
Watercolour paints

Place the block of ice onto a tray and let your little one paint away.  As the ice melts the colours mix together creating patterns, shapes and new colours.  My children love this activity as they get to create a mess whilst creating patterns and pictures.  They find it lots of fun.  Also a big bonus is that it is easy to clean up as you simply clean the tray afterwards!

11 Snowman milk bottles [31st]

Small glass/plastic bottles
Felt/ribbon
Straw
Arla Big Milk
Felt pen

Take your pen and draw buttons down the side of the bottle.  Attach a ribbon round the neck of the bottle and then fill with Arla Big Milk.  Enjoy your Arla Big Milk in style with a straw!

12. Polar bear masks [1st]

Paper plate
Tissue paper [white]
Black pom pom
Pipe cleaner

Cut out two eyes and then stick tissue paper all over the paper plate.   Attach the black pom pom for the nose and a pipe cleaner for the mouth.  My girls have fun running round scaring people as a polar bear.

13. Bird feeders [2nd]

Bird seed
Lard
String/ribbon

Add bird seeds to melted lard and pour into moulds.  Leave to set in the fridge overnight and then hang out in the garden for the birds.

14. Milk bottle igloo [3rd]

Lots of empty Arla Big Milk bottles

We simply love the idea of building a Milk Bottle igloo and are currently saving up our Arla Big Milk bottles to build one of our own.  Some of our favourites are on  Thisdayilove's Pinterest board

Arla Big Milk would love to see some snaps of your little one’s first moments, upload them onto Twitter using #BigSteps and you can see everyone else’s cute snaps.
