This day I love.......: toilet

A few weeks ago I started potty training Little Man. I never realised how much harder it would be this time around. With the girls we were never defined by time and so we had the freedom or perhaps luxury to 'be in all day' or take our time. Little Man doesn't have this. We have school pick ups and drop offs, we have after school clubs and sporting events to get to. Birthday parties to attend and not to mention now 3 small humans who want my attention. It's really tricky and feels very stop start.

I think this is making it harder for him to grasp the concept. He's fine when naked from the waist down. He happily finds his potty and does what he needs to do, but the second you put trousers/pants or both on him then he forgets and becomes lazy again. You can ask him but he says no. Don't try and force him because he gets cross. It seems we are making very little progress.

What he does like though is his independence. He doesn't want to wear nappies any more and protests when you try and change him. He loves his toilet seat because he can put it on the toilet himself and he finds it comfy to sit on. He loves that he is in control. He loves the praise he gets and the rewards afterwards too. I am hoping it is just a matter of time before he cracks it.

I've tried to stick with the same format as I did with the girls. We have lots of potties around the house, making it easy to get to one quick if he needs to. We also have a BABYBJÖRN Toilet Training Seat in the downstairs bathroom. The reason we chose the BABYBJÖRN Toilet Training Seat over other toilet seats is because of the ability to alter the size meaning it has a secure fit on any toilet. The ergonomic seat is then much more stable and doesn't have that rock which many other seats do. I also like the fact there is a inbuilt splash guard to help prevent spills, particularly important with boys and that it is really easy to keep clean.

I never experienced this with the girls, they hated the sensation of an accident and so would tell me straight away. This in turn stopped them from having further accidents. Little Man however doesn't seem to mind and finds it rather funny there is now a puddle to splash in.

Most parents will have heard of Pourty, it's the potty which pours out the back. The potty is great for wee as it easily pours from the back thanks to the handy spout and can be wiped clean with ease. The potty itself doesn't feel heavy and can be easily lifted thanks to the conveniently located handle. This also aids with pouring.

My daughter says the handle looks like a smile and this is something she really likes. The potty is sturdy when sat on, I have seen some others flex at the base and this has given me concerns about the stability, this was not the case with Pourty. It is light enough for my youngest to pick up too and she had no issues with sitting on it.

Pourty have grown and expanded their range, they now also do a step and a toilet seat.

The Pourty toilet seat has the same shape as the potty this means a child is used to sitting on it. Transitioning from potty to toilet can be a huge step for some children, they can find the whole thing a bit daunting. Some just find it uncomfortable as they are not used to the seat on the toilet, it feels different to them than their potty that they are used to. The Pourty seat therefore helps with this transition. They are used to the seat already and the shape is kept the same. I must admit when I first saw the seat I was a little worried how stable it would be, given the back is missing but we have had no issues. The toilet seat is unique in that is can be altered to fit any sized toilet.

Toilets are often different shape and sizes. Finding a toilet seat that fits a range of toilets can be tricky. Whilst the majority of toilet training seats can be used, they often don't fit correctly. By this I mean they have a wobble when the child sits in them. This can often lead to a knock in the child's confidence of the toilet. The Pourty toilet seat can be adjusted to fit any toilet seat. This stops that wobble and the child feels more confident when sat on the toilet. We took the Pourty seat with us on our holidays as it meant that we knew the seat would fit and it would be a seat they were familiar with. We have found that with rectangular toilets the fit isn't great but it is still better than other seats we have used. Pourty do specify this on the instructions.

When a child is transitioning from potty to toilet it is great to encourage their independence. The Pourty step allows child to get on and off the toilet themselves. It can also then be easily moved so they can reach the sink to wash their hands. The step has a non slip top and is light enough that my youngest at 2 can easily pick the step up and move to where she needs it. The Pourty step often gets picked up and moved around the house for her to stand on as she feels fit. The Pourty step has also made a great place for my eldest to do some colouring on and I often find her using it as a desk.

The great thing about the Pourty range is that it is all light weight so that children can carry it and it is all easily cleaned. My youngest likes the Pourty logo of the cat and I really like that it creates a sense of familiarity so that the child's confidence can grow with potty training.

Having now potty trained the girls I could not have done it without the right equipment. Here is my list of things I would recommend

Baba and boo potty training pants

These potty training pants have been amazing. When my girls where in pull up nappies they would assume they were in a normal nappy and be lazy and not tell me they needed to go. What baba and boo training pants did was catch the wee or the poo, but yet the girls knew about it. It stopped them from being lazy and made them start asking for the toilet/potty. Unlike ordinary pants though, they are slightly thicker meaning less overall mess. Often I would find I only needed to change the pants and not the entire outfit.

Poutry seat and step

I have really loved the pouty range. The seat follows the same design as the potty which means that when the child is transitioning from potty to toilet they are already familiar and comfortable with the feel of the seat. This makes things a lot easier and quicker. The seat is also adjustable so it fits correctly on most seat types, was a bit wobbly on a square toilet. The step is light weight and portable so my daughter could carry it herself, helping with her independence of getting off and on the toilet and also to get to the sink to wash her hands.

Lumipotti

The Lumipotti has been absolutely fantastic for night time use, it stays in my daughters bedroom and she can easily find it at night. If we are upstairs during the day too she knows it is there and will go and use it. The wide base provides extra stability and it is easy to clean afterwards. A great way to encourage day and night dryness as the Lumipotti can be used both day and night. The additional night light is great for toddlers too.

Squid soap

I will be writing the review for this shortly, but this is great for teaching children to wash their hands correctly. I think this is an important skill that can be taught at the same time as potty training.

Stickers, rewards charts and sweets

Invest in whichever method of rewards works best and make sure you have plenty in stock. You don't want to run out!

My wee friend

These great little stickers can be stuck inside the potty. They are black unless activated by water. They then display a smiling face. The idea is the child's wee activates the sticker creating a sense of achievement and one they can see.

Dry like me

I discovered dry like me late on with the toilet training for my youngest. They are pads which can be stuck into normal pants and as they are absorbent they catch the child's wee. I found them particularly useful for night time training or if we were going in the car on a long car journey and I knew she would fall asleep on the way.
