This day I love.......

The CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix is the first Group 1 car seat which features an automatic locking and adjustment system in the harness.  This means the harness works just like an adult car seat belt and ensures maximum safety as the harness is automatically adjusted.

I was keen to test out the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix as I often struggle to obtain the correct tightness of the harness.  I am a huge fan of making things safer and that usually means eliminating common mistakes.  The most common mistake is incorrect fitting of the harness and another of the car seat.  The CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix comes with a handy guide which high lights the correct positioning of the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix in each make and model vehicle.

There are two fitting options for the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix, both use isofix.  It is important to ensure the seat is fully moved forward before attempting to connect to isofix.  To do this turn the large button on the front

This moves the seat forwards and backwards.  The button needs to be pulled out and turned at the same time.  It is a pull and turn not just a turn.  I had to remember to do this.  Once the seat is fully forward the isofix can be put into place.  There is an audible click and a green indicator.

There is a red lever next to the button to move the seat forward and backwards which unclips the isofix.  The seat must then be moved backwards using the button to ensure the back of the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix is against the seat it is secured to.

It is here that there are the options for installation.  The first is to use a car support leg, which is an additional purchase.  I did not do this so cannot comment on how easy it would be.  The instructions seem pretty straightforward to do, I guess it would depend on how much room you had to manoeuvre the support leg into position.  The second option is to use the top tether, which is what I decided to do.

The Karabiner of the Top Tether is secured to the ring on the back rest [use the adjuster side] and the other karabiner is connected to the vehicle anchor point.  You then tighten the top tether until the red tab on the tension adjuster disappears.  To tighten simply pull the belt.

With the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix now secured I could put the instruction book in the very handy pocket in the side headrest of the seat.

After I had installed the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix I decided to have a good look at how everything else worked, before putting my daughter in the seat.  The straps are well padded and seem to have a grip underneath to stop them slipping off clothes.  After using the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix I can also imagine this is one of the reasons the harness has not yet twisted.

There are some clever features on the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor fix one of which is the ability to move the buckle in order to obtain the correct fitting on the child.  I have not seen this before and loved the clever way it had been done.  The buckle can sometimes slip behind this padding though which makes it a little fiddly to put the harness in.

The harness itself clips together by two metal ends and easily fits into the buckle.

Buckle on Q-Retraktor

What you do need to be careful of, is because the harness returns back to the original position the harness buckle does not stay in the position you left it.  I am used to unfastening my daughter and then placing the straps and harness buckle over the edge of the seat before lifting her out.  With the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor you cannot do this and so the buckle and harness always remain in the seat.  Once you are aware of the positioning there is no issue, but I have forgotten a few times and the buckle has caught on my daughters clothing

Hole in dress

Whilst I have not took pictures of them, you adjust the headrest with a small button at the side.  It turns and as it does so the headrest moves up and down.  What is incredibly clever is the harness moves at the same time, so the harness is also always at the correct height.

The recline function is located under the front of the seat and was easy to operate.  This was great when my youngest fell asleep as I could easily recline her to make her more comfortable.

My youngest has been very impressed with the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor.  She loves the feeling of the straps and that they move with her giving her freedom and movement in the seat, whilst still keeping her safe.  I love the clever features of the seat.  The fact the headrest height and height of the shoulder straps are automatically taken care of and that the straps automatically tighten are great features which aid safety.  These are some of the most common mistakes made with car seats and to eliminate them gives the CasualPlay Q-Retraktor a great advantage.

I have also got quite fast at installing the seat and this was recently put to the test.  My car broke down on the A1.  I had to remove the seat from my car and re install in my Mums car on the side of the A1 in the rain.  I had to do this quickly and obviously under pressure, but I managed in 5 minutes and my Mum could take the girls home whilst the car was fixed.  If the car seat had been heavy or difficult to install I would not have been able to do this.

So far my youngest loves her CasualPlay Q-Retraktor.  She has had no problems, colouring, sticking, eating, playing computer, sleeping, playing with toys and looking out the windows.  The seat is high enough to give her a good view outside and has good side protection.

This week it is National Child safety week and I thought it would be the perfect time to write the review for our Britax King II LS.  I published earlier the general statistics for the Britax King II LS which you can see here.  I want to focus here more about our experience of using the Britax King II LS and would also like to make it clear that I have not tested how the car seat would be in a crash.  I will be writing a separate post and hopefully a You tube video on installation.

Britax King II LS

The Britax King II LS comes fully assembled and can therefore be used straight from the box.  I was impressed with the number of different languages the instruction books came in and also that they could be stored on the seat itself.  I often misplace instruction books so this was a great benefit.

The installation was very easy to follow, and I shall write more about how to install the seat in a later post.  I managed to install within 10 minutes and subsequent installations are much faster.  I have noticed that the installation is easier in cars with a higher roof as its easier to lift the seat up.

The look and feel of the Britax King II LS is really sleek.  I love the tough looking outer shell which is also wipe clean and the seat feels lovely and padded.  There appears to be a lot of protection around the head and as the head rest is adjustable it can easily be moved into the correct position.

Adjustable headrest Britax King II LS

The seat itself weighs just over 10Kg so it is relatively easy to move between cars.  The padded material of the seat is soft and feels comfortable.  There is a slight snag in that sometimes the back of the seat padding can twist round, exposing the interior shell.  It is not a huge problem as you can simply twist the padding back round but it is worth noting to make sure the child is fitted in the seat correctly.

We recently did a 5 hour car journey with my youngest in the Britax King II LS.  She usually does not like being in the car but we had no problems.  In fact she fell asleep

Sleeping in Britax KIng II LS

In fact falling asleep in the Britax King II LS is a rather common theme.

Recline function Britax King II LS

There is a really handy lever just under the seat near where the feet of the child is which reclines the seat.  The recline is very smooth and so has not yet woken up my daughter.  You maybe able to see the recline in the above picture.  The seat moves within its own shell and therefore does not take up additional space in the car.  I have also noticed that my daughters head does not seem to fall forward as much in the Britax King II LS when she is asleep as what it has in other seats.  She appears to have a lovely deep sleep and her head is always back against the head rest.

The unique point of the Britax King II LS is the light and sound click.  To adjust the seat harness ,you either press a button under the seat and pull the straps to loosen, to tighten you pull the strap between the child's legs.

Adjustable strap and button

When the harness is tight enough there is an audible click and a green light

This a great way to check that the harness is tight enough.  I still do the pinch check on the straps just to make sure, as if my daughter has sat forward the harness would be too loose.  99% of the time the audible click and light needs no further adjustment.  What this has meant is that my daughter who used to constantly take her arms out of the straps, has so far in the past 2 months never managed to get her arms out of the straps.  I think this is partly down to the secure fit but also the padding on the shoulder straps meaning that she is comfortable with the straps over her shoulders.

Padded shoulder harness

My daughter appears to be comfortable in the Britax King II LS.  I wanted to trial on both long and short journeys before writing this review and give it at least a month to pick up any snags or little niggles.  If I am honest other than the little niggle I have already mentioned the only other thing is the adjustable strap can be quite long and it simply dangles to the floor.  I have caught my daughter playing with this and I just think it would be more in keeping with the sleek design to have somewhere to store this.  It in no way alters the performance of the seat and it is probably me just being a little picky.

In both the hot and the cold weather my daughter has been comfortable in the seat.  I feel she is well protected and because I find the seat simple to install I am confident it would perform as intended in a crash, although I am hoping I never have to find out.  My daughter is very happy with her Britax King II LS and one of her favourite games to play in the car is Peekaboo.

Hiding in Britax Car seatPeekaboo in car seat

I have found the Britax King II LS really simple to use.  I changed cars and have had no problems moving between cars.  The extra hard shell gives the seat a really sleek look and it is easy to keep clean.  The smooth adjustable recline has meant my daughter can fall asleep in comfort without being woken up and thanks to the unique light and sound indicator I have found securing her in the seat incredibly easy with great reassurance.  I can really understand why Britax gave this car seat the name King.

I had to include this picture in this post as whilst I was trying to take photos of my youngest in the seat, my eldest had other ideas and it simply is my #king moment!

Finding the perfect gift can be hard.  I always wonder if the person will like it, will they want it, do they need it or do they already have it.  I like to put thought into my gifts and buy something that I have specifically chosen for that person.

I was recently asked what I would really like.  After a lot of thinking and deciding perhaps I could do without more cake/chocolate/doughnuts/sweets for a little while, what I really wanted was a way to keep my youngest daughter safe.  My youngest daughter is wanting to explore more of the world, she wants her independence and freedom and the greatest gift I can give her, is to encourage her safely.

The Goldbug Harness buddy was the perfect solution for my youngest.  I was a little worried at first as she had never worn a bag on her back before and she always tries to get out of the car seat/pushchair harness, or other style harness.  She however loved it.

She loves the Harness buddy.  She loves how soft and cuddly he is.  As its light weight she hardly knows its there and even lets me put it on.  It is very easy to secure and to put onto her.  The straps are adjustable and easy to alter.

I have often worried that a harness might have the opposite effect and hinder her freedom.  It might be too bulky or be too restrictive limiting her movements, but this is not the case with the Goldbug Harness buddy.

She can play in the park

over the bridgedown the steps

through the tunnel

Explore nature and go pond dipping

looking through the grass

And because the safety rein is extra long, she can have extra fun exploring.

The Goldbug Harness buddy was the perfect gift for my youngest, it has given her her independence,  freedom and a lot of confidence.  For me, it has given me piece of mind and a great sense of happiness watching my youngest daughter gain so much enjoyment from exploring the world around her.

I was sent a Goldbug Harness Buddy from Presents for Men to write a post on gifts.  The words and thoughts are all my own personal opinion.

There is so much choice on the market for children's car seats.  Rear Facing or Forward Facing? what group do I buy? Harness or impact shield?  These are just a few of the questions I have asked myself whilst purchasing seats for my girls.  It is such a tough choice.

One of the sites I often use is Which? as they are independent and purchase the seats to test.  As an example I have embedded the video from their site on the difference of a good seat Vs bad seat,  The video is a little upsetting even though crash dummies are used

Which? test their car seats beyond the tests required for the ECE R44/04 which is compulsory for all UK car seats.  They test to 40mph, 10mph more than the ECE R44/04 test and use a full car instead of a mock up of the back seat.  They test both rear collisions and side impacts.  This element of the test accounts for 60% of the Which? rating with the other 40% down to ease of installation of the seat.  As a correctly fitted seat is key to the seat performing correctly in a crash.  Although I appreciate there are other sites and reviews Which? is the one I personally value most for its Independence and thoroughness.

For the question of Harness Vs impact shield.  I personally prefer Impact shield.  From 6 months of age my eldest daughter worked out how to get out of her harness.  It did not matter if it was in the pushchair, car seat or high chair she could get out of them.  No matter how tight or what gadget I used, she would work out a way to get out.  At one point I had to do an emergency pull over and stop as she had climbed completely out of her seat.  With the impact shield I have never experienced this.  I know in some instances some children don't like the feel of the shield and so its always better to try a seat before you buy it but for us the impact shield is much safer.

An impact shield, I have found removes the element of the child being unable to climb out of the seat or undo the harness.  I find it easier to get the impact shield on my daughter and fasten her in if she she is having a tantrum.  With a harness I really struggle to fasten her in correctly if she is having a tantrum and generally not wanting to sit in the seat.  I also personally feel reassured, as I often worry I have not done the harness up correctly.

When researching a car seat for my youngest I decided to go for rear facing after watching this video

However, I then encountered a problem.  The only car seat I could find which was rear facing had harness and not an impact shield.  I decided to go with it as the video had convinced me to go for rear facing.  The car seat arrived and to this day I am not 100% convinced it is installed correctly.  It was difficult to install, incredibly heavy so we cannot transport it between cars and my daughter can escape from the harness, which leads me wondering how effective it would be in a crash?  It also is one of the smallest on the market but it still takes up a lot of space.

Having bought a Kiddy Energy Pro for my eldest I turned once again to Kiddy for a solution.  They have the impact shield I prefer and also a Which? best buy.

Kiddy Guardian Fix Pro 2

There are several points I love about our Kiddy car seats, the first is how incredibly light weight they are.  I can lift it one handed whilst carrying my daughter in the other arm.  This makes it easy to transport between vehicles, and would be ideal to use on an aircraft.  The second is how easy it is to fit.  The Energy Pro is simply placed on the seat, whereas the Guardian Fix pro 2 has isofix bars.  It took me less than 2 minutes to install using isofix.  This leaves me confident it is installed correctly.

isofix

The third is that Kiddy really do love kids, so much so they put it on the tag

Kiddy loves kids

Kiddy really have thought of everything when they designed their seats.  From Easy one touch recline, to adjustable footrests and to the Side impact protection.  The covers come off and are machine washable which is great for me, as my kids love to make a mess.  There is a wide range of colours to choose from too, meaning there should be something to suit all tastes.

This will be a seat that will last and grow with my daughters right up until they are 12 years old.  My daughter loves her Kiddy car seat and after a hard day at nursery can have a place to rest her head whilst she naps.

Kiddy very kindly provided me with a Guardian Fix pro2.  All words thoughts and opinions are my own.
