This day I love.......

An invite to visit William's den arrived in my inbox, I hadn't heard of William's Den before but a quick google search gave me a good insight. A brand new adventure attraction that promised to give families the best day ever. If the best day ever was on offer, I had to go and experience for myself.

William's Den is located around a mile from South Cave in Hull. I am always worried when I visit somewhere new as to if I will find it ok, but actually it was really easy. Incredibly close to the A63 and it took us just under an hour from South Yorkshire. The buildings of William's Den are very sympathetic to the surrounding environment. As you drive down the country road the large teepee of the outdoor play area could be seen over the horizon and the new buildings built to represent the old grain stores.

The buildings have all been designed and built to be sustainable with solar panels on the roof, a rain water flush system in the toilets, biomass boiler and recycled materials for heating, insulation and building materials. I have to mention the toilets as they were fab, sorry not something I normally mention but I really have to. First there is no Male/Female toilet, instead they have toilets with baby changing facilities inside. Meaning a single parent visiting on their own, be it male or female, can change their child. There are extra wide cubicles so those with pushchairs can get in and special adapted cubicles with additional facilities for those that might need them. You can tell they were designed by parents.

We had arrived at lunch time and so our first stop was 'the Kitchen table'. My youngest ordered a den dog, I think that is what it was called, and my eldest a pizza. I also ordered a kids pizza to share with Little Man. Pizza is cooked in the wood fire oven and was just delicious, I wonder what the secret is to the dough they make? My youngest food arrived and I was impressed. It was proper food, and clearly not mass produced. There is an enclosed outdoor seating area with toys and play equipment to keep the smaller children entertained whilst you eat too.

After lunch we could get stuck into playing. First we tested the indoor play area. Little Man loved that he could go on with his sisters and that I could accompany him too. Everything in the den has been designed for the whole family to go on together, from the ages of 2 and up. All made from natural materials, there were large cargo nets, balance beams and wooden steps.

Little Man was chasing after his sisters and laughing as he did. He crossed the bridges and balanced his way across the wooden beams. We played the wooden drums and instruments and got lost in the den.

We found a hidden hideaway and looked out of the large glass windows over the stunning views. I would have loved to have had a sleep over here as a kid, it was the perfect setting to do so. After exploring the upper play areas we slid down the metal slide to the sand below. The girls found a tunnel and grass, pretend grass, to run over. A tree to climb and a rope swing to swing on.

Little Man then discovered the stream, his shoes and socks came off as he went for a paddle. Climbing the rocks and then climbing into the metal trough. He was splashing and having a really good time. He narrowly missed a drenching from the rainmaker, other children eagerly stood underneath awaiting the shower.

His sisters were busy in the sand, filling buckets to carry to the top before pouring them down the chutes to fill the bucket again. Little Man came over to join in.

My children would have happily spent an entire day in this indoor section and I actually had to persuade them that they wanted to see outside too. I am so pleased I did. The views over the meadow were beautiful and whilst we could have explored the meadow of wildflowers or the woodland we opted to stay and play.

Zip wires, tyre swings and a dedicated area to build dens with large sticks. Another playground with water and sand to explore. The girls however had spotted the tunnels and 'hills' and were running across the field to play and explore some more. Little Man running after them. They ran past the wooden beams tower and the tower of rocks to climb and instead spent their time running over the mountains and through the tunnels. My youngest then spotted something in the distance and ran once again.

She had found the mud kitchens!

That was it, Little Man was in his element. He had dirt that he could play with. All three of them started playing and using their imagination, apparently making chocolate brownies.

This was play as it should be. Three kids with the freedom to run around and explore and get dirty. Three kids happily playing together and using their imaginations to be creative. Three happy children.

This freedom, this ability to run around and explore and this flexibility for each of my children to adapt the environment to their own unique ways of play reminded me so much of my childhood. Exploring fields near by, climbing trees and playing in streams. This to me was what William's Den was all about. It was made even more special by the fact I could join in with my kids. I didn't see height restrictions or age restrictions. I just saw the freedom to play and the freedom to let kids be kids.

It was time for a treat, before playing some more. William's Den make their own ice cream and have won an award for their vanilla ice cream so it was a must have for us to try before our day finished. Given the speed at which the girls ate theirs I can say it was delicious!

As we were heading back outside to play my daughter spotted this sign, and given it was the day before her birthday she decided it was written especially for her!

Whilst we were invited to visit William's Den I would have happily paid to take my children and am in fact looking at when we can next go. They genuinely all enjoyed themselves. I would highly recommend taking a change of clothes and a towel, just in case. It was such a wonderful day out and one where we created lots of happy memories!

Last week was a very surreal week indeed.  During my daughters gymnastic lesson I received an email saying ITV would be at our house in 30 minutes.  The piece they were shooting for was to do with screen time in children, and in particular for internet safety day.  Both my 6 and 4 year old have a tablet, and my eldest has access to one of my old laptops, so we are more than qualified to talk about screen time in children.

We have many security features in place to try and limit the exposure or access the girls have.  The main screen on their tablets are kids only, they need a code to access the internet and we have safety features on the network too.  However there are times when one of them is unsupervised on the internet.

The girls each have homework from school and often the best way for them to practise is to access on online resource.  I may therefore start one of them working on this online resource whilst working 1:1 with their sister on another task, before switching over.  Whilst neither of them, to my knowledge, has deviated from the task they have set, the potential to do so does exist.  This unsupervised access to the internet does have some structure but it still remains unsupervised.  There is however no other way to fit in the amount of homework each child has to complete, plus family time and our other activities.

This week I have also dug out the tuff spot.  I felt it was time to introduce Little Man to messy play, and we started off with water.  He was unsure at first, I think more to do with why we were doing this but then he got stuck in.

It wasn't long before the floor was covered in water and he has the biggest smiles!  Safe to say we will be doing more messy play over the next few weeks.

Little Man seems to have a real love for water and given how much he enjoyed messy play last week I can certainly see it featuring a lot more and probably a lot more water based play!

This day I love the week with the news and the water

Finding activities for the girls to do together is relatively easy, as there is 21 months between them and they have the same interests.  They are the same height and with the same size feet so they often get mistaken for twins.  Finding something that all 3 of my children can enjoy is rather tricky.  An invitation from Mess Around to spend the morning with them at messy play, and it was suitable for ages 6 months [sitting unaided] to 10 years, seemed to offer the perfect solution.  Something for all three of my children to do together.

We had arrived early and the girls watched eagerly from the window as the Mess Around team set up different messy stations inside.  They spotted the ones with ice, and the ones with ice cream and were keen to get inside and play.

Before letting them loose I wanted a quick picture and mainly so I could see how clean they were before the fun started.  Little Man however was taken by the lights and refused to look at the camera, he had missed his morning nap and I half expecting him to fall asleep during the messy fun simply from tiredness.

The girls started off very tentatively.  Placing soap on sponges and staying within the tuff spots.

They then remembered the ice cream tuff spot and headed straight over to it, asking if they could eat it.

Before getting stuck in.  Little Man loved his ice cream.  The coldness kept causing him to drop the cone but he soon picked it back up to have a bit more.  He finished every part and wanted to go in for some more.

Who could blame him when you get to eat ice cream with a spade?

By this point my youngest, who is food obsessed, had begun walking round and playing in each area in a bid to discover what she could and could not eat.  My eldest had located the science station and was busy experimenting with colour changing bubble bath.

The girls had some fun with the slippy slime but my youngest was desperate to show me and her sister what she had found.

Her amazing food senses had taken her to the cake decorating table.  A party isn't a party without cake, and both girls wasted no time in getting stuck in to make their party cake.

Little Man has a real love for water and playing `with balls.  He was over the moon when he discovered a container full of water and balls and began splashing in the water.

In an attempt to let him dry out a bit, we moved over to some other sensory play.  Including green spaghetti, which was really sticky and the girls seemed to really love.

My youngest wanted to eat the baked beans in the tuff spot next to the spaghetti but we changed her mind and instead she went to play with jelly, whilst my eldest played pie face.

I think it is safe to say that things got very very messy indeed, but both girls and Little Man were loving it!

Like his big sister Little Man had taken to eating everything.  Given he had missed his morning nap I was quite surprised he was still awake, I think he was having far too much fun with all the different textures and things to explore and play with.

The hour seemed to fly and no one wanted to leave, in fact we were the last to go out the door.  My youngest sulked in the car on the way home because she had loved it so much, and Little Man finally fell asleep after having so much fun.

It was wonderful to finally find something that all three of my children could do together, and that each of them got something out of the session.  After two baths I am still finding random oats, cereals and green spaghetti but my girls haven't stopped talking about their time at Mess Around and both have asked to go back.

This Day I love messing around at Messy play

Thank you to Mess around for inviting us to play, all words are my own opinion.

We love Messy play.  The girls love getting stuck in and getting creative.  They love experiencing new sights, textures and smells.  They have so much fun with messy play that we do try and do so as often as possible.  The problem I have at the moment is my health has limited the amount of messy play we can do.  I cannot lift, I cannot twist and trying to clean up afterwards is very difficult.

When AO.com got in touch regarding the Big Month of Mess I really wanted to take part.  I began looking through the activities and that is when it hit me.  I am really going to struggle with this.  Instead of missing out I thought I might put together a round up style post of our favourite messy play activities and hopefully at some point I will be well enough to complete one of the activities,

Indoor Snow

Our favourite Messy play activity is indoor snow.  Ever since the girls were little this has been a firm favourite.  Everything is great from the texture, to how it looks.  It acts and feels like snow but without the cold.  You can create Frozen scenes or build snowmen, it is such a wonderful thing to play with.

Gloop

Gloop has some great properties to it and the girls love the way it behaves.  It is a great way to discuss melting and sinking and it only takes 2 ingredients to do

Mud

Nothing beats Mud and muddy puddles! Not sure I really need to add anything to that!

Soft and gentle Playdough

This dough is much softer than playdough and smells fantastic!  A favourite for unwinding and releasing some stress, I think I enjoy this as much as the girls.

Unplanned

Sometimes the best messy play is when it just happens by accident!

What are your favourite messy play activities?

Can you entertain the children in the school holidays for £20?

Can you entertain the children for the majority of the school holidays on £20 and get them ready for school?

The answer is yes with Poundland!

Most of our summer holidays has been spent indoors due to the rain.  On the days were it has been nice we have got out and about or played in the garden.  Poundland has provided the tools I have needed to keep the girls entertained.

Chalk sets to play hop scotch, draw or create outdoor games, craft supplies and paint for indoor paint and stickers and treats for rewards.  We have even bought baking supplies to make cakes and buns, or even to make home made play dough.  Messy play, outdoor play, craft and baking have all been done this summer holiday with thanks to Poundland and so far we have only spent £20 on supplies and have enough left to last us these last few weeks.

Here are some of the things we have been up to with our Poundland supplies

I have also been very conscious of my daughter forgetting what she has learnt and so have tried to incorporate some learning into our summer holiday.  Nothing excessive but enough to help her and to keep it fun.  Poundland have some great learning resources in store which my daughter has enjoyed selecting.

See what we bought on our latest visit to Poundland as I get the girls ready to go back to school

I was sent £20 voucher for Ponndland and set a challenge to see what we could buy.  All words are my own opinion

Cloud dough is one of our favourite activities.  I always have the ingredients in and it is quick and simple to set up, yet it keeps the girls entertained for hours.  Cloud dough is 8 cups flour to 1 cup oil.  You can add more or less to get the consistency as you like it.  Cloud dough has the property that it is powdery but you can compress it to form shapes, balls and even cloud dough castles.  It is great for exploring textures and building shapes.  Both the girls love it.

playing with cloud dough

Cloud dough was perfect for keeping my daughter entertained whilst it rained, but as soon as it stopped she wanted to head outside to find the muddy puddles.

We even met a couple of friends along the way

The perfect way to spend the day Cloud dough and muddy puddles.

This day I love cloud dough and puddles
