This day I love.......

The girls were super excited to be taking part in a scavenger hunt but this wasn't any ordinary scavenger hunt, we’re taking part in the H&A summertime scavenger hunt!  For our scavenger hunt we could think of no better place than Grandma and Grandads garden!  Full of places for the girls to explore and a little more exciting than our own garden it was perfect.

I gave the girls the list:

Something blue
A rainbow
Something that grows
A summer creepy crawly (butterflies, ladybirds, beetles)
A circle
A red front door
A ball
Something on wheels
H&A Frozen Olaf Bath & Shower Bubbles
H&A Frozen Olaf Colour Change Wash Mitt

My eldest read the list and both her and my youngest ran around the garden looking for things, the first item on the list caused a few arguments my eldest pointed to her swing and my youngest pointed to her slide both blue and both needed playing on before we could continue

My eldest then went a little out of order, but that's OK.  She remembered seeing red door on the list and took me to the car at the top of the drive.  Sure enough it had a red door and with it only a 2 seater it had a red front door.

Back to the list the girls were struggling to find a rainbow so we put this on hold to look for the next item on the list.  For some time the girls have been waiting for Grandads fig tree to grow some figs, and for the figs to grow enough for them to eat.  As soon as the girls read something that grows they ran over to the fig tree and pointed to the figs that they are so eagerly waiting to grow.

Hunting high and low there appeared to be no creepy crawlies, the girls did say the dogs crawl and they could crawl which I thought was a wonderful interpretation of the item to find.  Putting another on hold for us to find later we set off in search of a circle.  The girls tried to catch spotty dog as the quite rightly pointed out that spots are circles, but she wouldn't sit still long enough.  My youngest looked down and got very excited when she saw the spots on her wellie boots, lots of circles!

Next on the list was a ball.  With three dogs running around the garden I thought the girls would have picked up one of the balls the dogs play with but instead they pointed at the statue at the bottom of the garden, I love how the girls interpret each item.

We jumped into the girls electric car, which also was something on wheels, and headed to the end of the garden to hunt for creepy crawlies and a rainbow

At the end of the garden are some lovely blackberry bushes, scavenger hunting was clearly hard work as both girls stopped for a quick bite to eat.

It was rather lucky they did because hidden amongst the apple trees near the blackberries the girls spotted a butterfly, a perfect summer creepy crawly.

We hunted high and low for a rainbow, my youngest however began turning over flower pots.  As she did so she began singing I can sing a rainbow.  Then she started jumping and screaming, 'a rainbow Mummy a rainbow!'  Sure enough under a plant pot she had found a rainbow

A garden H&A scavenger hunt meant the girls were now ready for a bath, and a bath and Grandma house is obviously much more fun.  We ran the bath with our H&A Frozen Olaf Bath & Shower Bubbles

It was not long before the girls jumped into the warm bubble bath and had a nice warm hug with their H&A Frozen Olaf Colour Change Wash Mitt

A perfect way to spend the day at Grandma house!

Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue. We ran through a rainbow, through a rainbow, through a rainbow.

We took part in a 5km run to raise funds for Barnsley hospital charity, thank you to all who sponsored us. I was so proud of my eldest who managed to run most of the 5k, the rest she walked.

At the end of the run she asked to go again, which says to me she enjoyed it.

My youngest wanted to be picked up most of the time, which was hard work in the heat but she still enjoyed all the colours.

I am now also the proud owner of rainbow dog. Our dog is still pink and blue after the run.

The 5k rainbow run is a run in which you run through clouds of colour. The paint feels like chalk or powder and it has come out of our clothes, just not the dog. Both the girls had a fantastic time, and I think they enjoyed the ice cream afterwards.

Here are some of our highlights:

The Team Honk baton arrived this weekend, which resulted in a rather busy weekend for the girls and I.  When Spencer, from adadcalledspen, and myself first sat down to discuss the team honk relay [what seems like months ago] we had two clear aims:

1. Involve as many people as we could
2. Have lots of fun and try to do things a bit different.

We also decided the theme for our leg of the relay would be Planes, Trains and auto mobiles.

With this in mind Spencer created the rather fantastic mystery tour of Barnsley and his wish came true as he achieved his flotilla of mobility scooters.  Hats off to you Spencer, I said aim big and you certainly achieved an amazing day!

The girls were keen to be involved and could not wait to get ready

Saturday my aim was to show it didn't matter how young you are you can still be involved.  The girls took part in a sponsored slide a thon.  How many times could we ride the rainbow slide at Playmania in 30 minutes?

down the slideoff we go

We managed 22 times, which I think is quite an achievement given I had to carry my youngest up the ramp and she kept wanting to stop to collect balls on her way up.  My eldest kept stopping for a drink too, well it is thirsty work.

The girls enjoyed themselves, and took a short nap at Playmania.

In keeping with our theme we visited the trains!

Our dog got involved too

The final part of the challenge for the girls was to do a 5m swim each.  The other children in the girls class got involved too and we all did a 5m relay, so the baton swam 25m in total!

I think it was only fair that I then treated the girls.  They had done rather a lot!

well deserved ice cream

Sunday was the handover day as we handed over to team honk Hull.  In keeping with our theme our final component was Planes!

In the plane ready to go

The weather was very grey and there was quite a lot of wind around, but we took a brief opportunity of a break in the weather and set off from York gliding club.

All aboard team honk

After an almost sideways landing at Hull Aero club, due to the very strong cross winds, we did a quick handover and decided to fly back again before the weather really turned nasty.

It has been such an amazing and busy weekend.  I would like to say thank you to ever one who has helped and to everyone who has sponsored us, it means a lot!  The girl,s its fair to say, are two tired little honkers!

My eldest celebrated her 3rd birthday this weekend.  We decided on a rainbow/colour theme for her party.  Originally I had wanted to have an art party but she asked for a bouncy castle for her birthday, so I stuck with the original rainbow/colour theme but got her a bouncy castle too.

My first task was to make her a birthday cake.  I wanted to do something bright and colourful and also incorporate one of my eldest [and my] favourite things, sweets.  Swizzels Matlow sent us a lovely box of rainbow drops and squashies, this got my creative mind to work.

I first made the cake and settled for my faithful sponge cake.

Ingredients for a 9" round cake

450g self raising flour, sifted
400g caster sugar
400g butter
52ml milk
7 eggs

Method

1. Pre heat oven to 150C and grease cake tin
2. Add all mixture into a bowl and mix together.
3.  Optional add food colouring.  I separated into 7 bowls and added 7 different colours to create a colourful inside cake.
4. Mix well.

5. Add mixture into cake tin.  I added each colour in turn to create a layered effect.

6. Place cake in oven for 1 and half to 2 hours.

finished cake

I made two cakes, one for the top and the other the bottom.  With the bottom cake I cut a whole out of the middle and filled with rainbow drops and coloured chocolate.  Be-careful when cutting the hole, as you need to leave enough cake to support the weight of the top cake.

filling cake with sweets

I covered all the cake in butter cream and suck both cakes together.  I used squashies to go round the sides of the cake, I needed 3 packets.  For the edging I used coloured fruit laces.  I liked the colourful effect the squashies gave to the side of the cake, I decided to use rainbow drops to fill in the gaps between the squashies.

I wanted to create something which would represent a rainbow on the top of the cake.  I created a number 3 from squashies and edged with rainbow drops.  Blue sugar crystals were then used to create a sky, around the rainbow number 3.

The cake was finished with rainbow Happy birthday candles.  My daughter really loved the cake, and I kept catching her through the day trying to take the sweets from it.

The bouncy castle arrived and my eldest ran outside to play on it.

I took the opportunity to get the party boxes ready.  I had decided not to use plastic party bags this year but instead do something different.  I wanted a box to represent the pot of gold you would find at the bottom of the rainbow.  The idea was to fill with chocolate coins, chocolate coins are very difficult to locate in August.  I therefore settled with rainbow theme.  I filled with sweets and chocolate that met the rainbow theme, added some pirate gold to represent the gold from the bottom of the rainbow and a magnifying glass to help go on more treasure hunts.

I finished off the cake decorations, by adding glasses of rainbow drops to the corners of the cake board.

colourful sweets

We tried to stick to the rainbow theme for food too.  With rainbow fruit sticks.  These were very popular.

And Rainbow vegetables.

It was time to light the candles and sing happy birthday.  My eldest has been practising singing happy birthday and my youngest likes to clap at the end.  She was ever so happy that she got to blow out the candles.  We cut open the cake and I was a little disappointed that some of the colours had not worked.  The gel colours worked really well so next time I think I will just use gel.  The sweets fell out the middle of the cake really nicely though and it was a lovely effect.

After cake it was time to start playing on the bouncy castle again.

It wasn't long before my eldest wanted to open her presents.  My youngest of course wanted to help.

She got some really lovely presents and her eyes lit up with everyone, she was ever so excited.  My youngest must have been watching because when my eldest had gone back to the bouncy castle, she took her opportunity to look through the presents.

Later whilst I was tidying up my eldest took it upon herself to 'test' out some of her birthday presents.  This one seems to be a particular favourite she likes to try

All that partying can only lead to one thing...
