This day I love.......

At my daughters school they have a star of the day every day.  My eldest daughter role plays this at home and a variety of her toys or the dogs get award the star of the day.  Occasionally she gives it to her sister.  She has had the star of the day 6 times so far, on the days when she doesn't get it the first words she says to me at pick up is 'I didn't get star of the day today' followed by a huge sigh.

She came out all Skippy and happy today and was so pleased to show me her star of the day certificate.  We had a very happy walk home.

My daughters happiness continued into her gymnastics lesson.  She attempted cart wheels and backwards rolls.  I am noticing a real improvement today in her strength and ability.  It would appear her teachers also have noticed an improvement as she was awarded her badge today.

Apologies for the blurry photo, I had to crop out the other children from the image which resulted in a slight distortion.

My eldest daughter has had such a wonderful day today and I am so proud of her

For lots of parents, the winter season is one marked by a constant headachy feeling. Screaming children, nothing to do, horrible weather and back to school tantrums; nothing comes close to it during any other point of the year, and the perils of the season can leave many parents burying their heads in their hands. There's no need to feel down during the cooler months though, and there's plenty of things you can do with your kids during the winter months that will help alleviate the burgeoning feeling of cabin fever!

Stargazing

Winter is the time of year when your area of the Earth receives least sunlight, and all of those long, dark evenings can be excellent for prospective star and planet gazers. You don't need a telescope to enjoy the stars; indeed if you have a good pair of binoculars a huge amount of stellar and planetary objects are visible; and the experience will help you explain to your children their place in the universe, the vast scale of the sky, and what particular objects in the night sky are.

Wintry Walks

Throw on your walking boots, get those fingers tucked into gloves and strap on the woolly hats; winter is a great time to wrap up warm and enjoy the great outdoors. Although your destination of choice will greatly depend upon where you live, great choices can be large parks, forests, woodlands, or even (for the adventurous and hardy) beaches!

Spot the Difference

Although playing in the snow is something that every child relishes each year, there's always more to do than sledding, snowman-making and snowball fights. Get a piece of dark fabric, catch a few snowflakes, pop them in the freezer for ten minutes, take them out and marvel at the wonderful shapes and patterns using a magnifying glass! The kids will love it!

Snuggle Up Together!

When the weather is awful and the house is freezing, sharing a bed, throwing on the covers and snuggling up with your kids can be a lot of fun! Beds can get rather overcrowded however, especially if you, your partner and a few little ones are all sharing the same space. You could pop online and get a surprisingly inexpensive king sized bed- they can be great value, especially clearance items from sites such as Bedstar- however if there's no room to move, perhaps have a snooze in the living room instead!

The weeks before Christmas have been rather busy.  The first thing on our Festive Fun list was to make the cards for our close family.  I cut out some tree shapes for the girls to decorate.  I gave the girls various craft items and left it up to them how to decorate their trees.

After they had decorated the trees for the cards, it was then time to decorate the house.  My eldest had been asking for some time to put the tree up and was rather pleased when I let her decorate the tree.

Yes all the decorations ended up on one branch, but I guess that's what happens when a three year old decorates the tree.  We also had some rainbow star lights for our play room and made some salt dough stars for our mini play room tree.

The house was decorated our cards made, there was just one final thing to do.  Make the cookies for nursery.  I like to get the girls to make the Christmas present for nursery, rather than buy it.  Last year we made mint angels and stars, this year we decided on cookies.

The girls mixed the ingredients in the bowl, and also ate quite a bit as we went along.

We made the dough and rolled it out, so we could cut out our snowman and star shapes.

The girls also managed to sneak in the odd angel too!

I baked the cookies and when cooled wrapped them up for the girls to give to nursery.  Now we were ready for Christmas.

A family whom I have never met have not left my thoughts all day today.  They sadly lost their daughter at 9 months old.  I remember the day I read the post and could not stop crying.  Such sad news that no family should ever face.

Today was her day to say goodbye and celebrate her life.  I had read the tweets from her Mum and knew that twinkle twinkle would be played at the funeral.  I could not be part of the twitter and blogging community during the day as I had sing and sign with the girls but wanted to send my love to the family.  I asked the teacher of our sing and sign class if we could sing twinkle twinkle and explained why.

All of the Mums wanted to join in and not one had ever heard of her before.  They all wanted to send their love and support to them at a difficult time.  This is one of the things I love about today, that in those dark times there are people out there who you have never met, but they will send you all the love and support in the world.  Through one small song we came together to show our love for the family at such a difficult time.

I often try to present the girls food in an interesting or different way, as I believe that you tend to eat more with your eyes.  By that I mean if you see it and it looks nice you will eat it, but if you see it and it looks a bit boring you tend to be less interested.

I have made swirl sandwiches in the past for the girls and they both have always really loved them.  To make swirls:

Take one slice of bread and top with your chosen filling, Jam and chocolate spread work best
Cut off the crusts
Roll the bread into a log shape
Cut the log into sections

I have in the past laid these onto the plate and put little cheese sticks on the top to make it look like snails which the girls find funny.

I then made the girls a sandwich and used a star shape cutter to make a star for the sandwich.  The girls really enjoyed lunch and its the first time I have had two empty plates and my eldest asked for more!

With the ice outside and living on a bit of a hill I did not feel much like venturing outside today.  Instead the girls and I started to make some Christmas decorations.  The first item on our list came as a request from my 2 year old.  When I asked her what she wanted to do she replied 'make a snowman' bit tricky without snow but I came up with a plan.

I took two balloons and tied them together, after blowing them up.  We then proceeded to paper mache the two balloons.  To make the paste I simply put child friendly glue into warm water and mixed together.  Once the balloons were completely covered, I tied string around them to hold the two together, as if to create two snowballs.  We then covered the balloons and string in paper and left to dry.

paper mache snowman

The snowman is currently drying and tomorrow we will finish him, by painting and making his hat and scarf.  I am not worried about the join between the two balloons as this will be hidden behind his scarf.  I would say that it is easier to coat the balloon in paste and stick the paper to the balloon than to get the paper wet and stick to balloon.  My daughter really enjoyed the sticky feel of the paper mache and had fun making a snowman.  I shall up date you on the progress.

Our next item for today was the Christmas tree.  I have a very active 2 year old and a 7 month old that since working out how to crawl is into everything and opens everything.  The girls are very lucky to have a 'play room' and I wanted a Christmas tree to go in it for them.  So we set about making a toddler proof Christmas tree.

making a tree

My daughter loves hand and foot painting so we used her hands to make the tree shape and her foot for the trunk of the tree.  The tree starts with one hand print at the top and then each subsequent line has an extra hand print.  I painted a star on the top of tree and my daughter then began sticking some pom poms on it for baubles.  She even stuck some glitter on to look like tinsel.

My youngest not wanting to miss out the fun also joined in and made her very own tree, which my eldest kindly decorated for her.

toddler proof Christmas tree

The trees are now hung up on the walls in the play room, meaning I can finally say I have put the tree up.  Slightly better than this is the fact I now have a toddler proof Christmas tree for the girls to enjoy and we had a lot of fun making them.

This day I love a toddler proof Christmas tree.

As part of our crafty Christmas today we made mint stars and angels.  I wanted to do a bit of a practise run on making them as I will be making them again with my daughter as a Christmas gift for her nursery.  My daughter really loves making things and baking is something she often asks to do,   She was really excited to be making sweets.

My eldest daughter requested pizza for her lunch today.  I thought it might be fun if we experimented and made our own pizza.  Here is what we did

Ingredients:

Tortilla Wraps [we used 3]
Tinned chopped tomatoes
Grated Cheese
Toppings of your choosing

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180 C

2. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in the Tortilla, we went for stars, circles and snowmen

2.  Place shapes onto baking tray and lightly cover with chopped tomatoes.  [We heated our tomatoes in a saucepan first just to squash them down a bit and make the sauce easier to spread, but this is up to you]

3. Add Cheese on top

4. Add your toppings, we went for Pepper and Mushrooms

It was really quick and simple to do and taste lovely.  My daughter really enjoyed making her own pizza and I found it a great way to involve her in preparing food.  We will be doing this again as we had lots of fun.

When my daughter was 8 months old I took her to her first baby sign class.  The company we decided to go with is Sing and Sign although there are others available.  It was something I wanted to do, as I have always wanted to learn sign language and I thought it would help my daughter to communicate with me.  The first time my daughter signed we were on a walk in the park she pointed at the ducks got all excited and signed duck.  Her face lit up when I said yes darling duck, that she hasn't stopped signing since.  Her speech however at the time was still on the Mama Dada phase.  So it goes to show that babies understand more than they can say and are just itching to communicate with us about the outside world.

Since those early days my daughters speech has come on and so has her signing.  She loves to sign as it often helps with others understanding her as she learns new words.  I think this has helped enormously in reducing tantrums and encouraged her to try to say more complex words.  She absolutely adores Mr Tumble on Cbeebies and signs along with him.  I will often buy her the 'Something Special' magazine as it has signs in for her to look at and fun things to do.

Today we bought her the magazine and it was a special Christmas edition, with some Christmas style flash cards.  She loved these and began copying the Christmas signs.  She signed:

sign reindeerSign Bauble
Sign Star
Sign Squirrel

Bauble - Hands at top move down in circle motion

Reindeer - Hands like antlers

Star - closed fist then opens out in air

And her favourite although not Christmas but she saw one on TV

Squirrel - Fists under chin

I love that she enjoys trying new words and can sign as well as talk and its something which I encourage her to do.  I am hoping that my youngest also picks up sign language as she watches her sister.  I always say the word and never sign alone so that she learns the spoken word too.

This day I love baby sign.
