This day I love.......

As a young child I always wanted a BRIO wooden train set.  I would play for hours with a set in a shop in town, and I loved creating stories to accompany the various track layouts.  There was something wonderful about the BRIO train set, they way the pieces easily fit together, even for little hands, and the bright colourful colours of the trains and scenery.

BRIO has retained its heritage and is a brand that is over 100 years old.  Each set has been updated and the range has expanded over the years, but all the new products are designed to be used with previous models.  All BRIO wooden toys are made from FSC certified wood, which means that it originated from responsible forestry.  BRIO is a well known name that is trusted.

The girls have a BRIO wooden train set that they love to play with, and although Little man is too young to play at the moment, I know that a set will last for years to come.  The BRIO railway starter set comes in 2 packs.  Pack A contains everything needed to build and play with a first track.  The figure of 8 track layout is one which most people start with, and one which the girls can build themselves.  However using Pack B, the starter track Pack, you gain an extra 13 pieces to build a whole host of track layouts.

I love the extra pieces that are in Pack A, the people, the stop signals and the cases.  These additional make for an increased imaginative play. It allows you to talk to your child more about the role play, and it allows others to play.  Each taking a person and creating a story around them.

The trains are perfect for little fingers to open, and the people easily fit inside.

New adventures can begin and a new story can unfold as the passengers are taken to their destination.  You can talk with your child about the train going over the bride or under the tracks and it is a great way to discuss positional language.

Every last detail has been thought through, from the way the trains open to the stop signal.  Each one perfect for little fingers to play with and use.

Whilst the sets are recommended for ages 3 and over, I can see Little man playing with them earlier as his sisters play with him.  The BRIO Railways starter packs are everything you need to start your BRIO journey together.

The Team Honk baton arrived this weekend, which resulted in a rather busy weekend for the girls and I.  When Spencer, from adadcalledspen, and myself first sat down to discuss the team honk relay [what seems like months ago] we had two clear aims:

1. Involve as many people as we could
2. Have lots of fun and try to do things a bit different.

We also decided the theme for our leg of the relay would be Planes, Trains and auto mobiles.

With this in mind Spencer created the rather fantastic mystery tour of Barnsley and his wish came true as he achieved his flotilla of mobility scooters.  Hats off to you Spencer, I said aim big and you certainly achieved an amazing day!

The girls were keen to be involved and could not wait to get ready

dressed and ready to gothe baton meets my eldest

Saturday my aim was to show it didn't matter how young you are you can still be involved.  The girls took part in a sponsored slide a thon.  How many times could we ride the rainbow slide at Playmania in 30 minutes?

down the slideoff we go

We managed 22 times, which I think is quite an achievement given I had to carry my youngest up the ramp and she kept wanting to stop to collect balls on her way up.  My eldest kept stopping for a drink too, well it is thirsty work.

The girls enjoyed themselves, and took a short nap at Playmania.

In keeping with our theme we visited the trains!

Our dog got involved too

The final part of the challenge for the girls was to do a 5m swim each.  The other children in the girls class got involved too and we all did a 5m relay, so the baton swam 25m in total!

I think it was only fair that I then treated the girls.  They had done rather a lot!

well deserved ice cream

Sunday was the handover day as we handed over to team honk Hull.  In keeping with our theme our final component was Planes!

In the plane ready to go

The weather was very grey and there was quite a lot of wind around, but we took a brief opportunity of a break in the weather and set off from York gliding club.

All aboard team honk

After an almost sideways landing at Hull Aero club, due to the very strong cross winds, we did a quick handover and decided to fly back again before the weather really turned nasty.

It has been such an amazing and busy weekend.  I would like to say thank you to ever one who has helped and to everyone who has sponsored us, it means a lot!  The girl,s its fair to say, are two tired little honkers!

The girls and I had an early start as we walked to the train station to catch a train to York.  Upon arrival on the platform we discovered the first train cancelled, and the second a 31 minute delay.  This prompted me to get in the car and drive to Leeds train station.  My eldest was ever so disappointed.

We managed to catch a train at Leeds, that was earlier than the original planned connecting train but at the time I did not realise it took longer.  My daughter was just happy to be on the train

on the train

She has taken to wearing her doll inside her coat, I think its because I usually carry her sister in a sling inside my coat.

We met up with some very lovely blogging Mums from Britmums and had a lovely chat.  My daughter loved to watch the world go by from the window of our meet up

She was joined by 'the Olivers mad house'

It was really lovely watching them watch the world together and point things out to each other,

After a lovely meetup I took my girls to the National Railway museum.  The museum is free to enter and is next to the train station so was perfect to have a look round before heading home.

My daughter really loved it

She even managed to find time to play with the toys they had provided

After a really busy day I could think of no better way to end it but with a chocolate train lollipop.
