This day I love.......

I honestly cannot remember the last time I went to the circus. I mean I can remember going, it was the time when animals still featured heavily in the shows and of course clowns too. I can remember sitting on wooden benches in a cold tent and eating popcorn as the show unfolded in front of me. I cannot remember taking the children, and they cannot remember visiting before, which made our recent trip very exciting.

We travelled around 45 minutes to York to visit The Paulos Circus. The large pink tent was easy to spot from the A1237 and had plenty of free parking. We arrived 40 minutes before the start of the show. Having reserved our tickets in advance we were able to collect from the box office. People had already started to arrive for the next show, and were queueing to book tickets as the 4.30pm show was fully booked. I would recommend coming early for tickets but also because you choose your own seats, so arriving early gives you more seating options.

There was a real magical feeling inside the tent. Warm string lights, a soft mist on the circus floor and stars lined the sky. I was surprised at how warm it was inside and we all settled into our seats to watch the performance.

With hindsight I wish we had arrived earlier for better seats, but we were still excited and looking forward to the show. A countdown began.

The show began and I began to realise what a bad choice I had made in seats. My daughter who was sat at the side of me could see and I instead watched the show via the shadows on the tent roof and the expressions on my children. They were engrossed. They hid when the performers were performing stunts blindfolded, watching instead through the gaps in their fingers.

The show lasted for an hour and ten minutes and had no interval, but we didn't notice the time as it simply flew by. We were treated to traditional performances like juggling and knife throwing, more modern performances with lasers and of course some high flying stunts and acrobatics.

There was a buzz in the tent before the final act. The tightrope walk.

The girls watched through the gaps in their fingers again. In complete awe at the skill from each performer. I don't think they could quite believe what they were seeing.

The show came to an end, it in no way felt like over an hour had gone past and the girls would have happily sat and watched more. Little Man at 2 years old was just as captivated by what he could see, plus the show had bubbles. What 2 year old doesn't love bubbles?

No sooner had we left than the girls were asking when we could come again. I asked them their favourite parts my youngest daughter said she liked the bum wig and 'no music here' [You will have to go see the show to see what she means], my eldest said she liked the red spinning rings the best. I always have admiration for any acrobatics and stunts so personally its hard for me to pick a favourite part but I think Los Sanchez might have stole the show for me.

I only have 2 regrets, the first is we didn't get there early so we had limited choice in seating and the second is I didn't take my proper camera. I had to use my phone and whilst they are ok images I know they could be much better.

The girls would love to visit again and I would love to take them. For full details of The Paulos circus visit their Facebook page .

Our tickets were provided in exchange for this review, all words are my own personal opinion.

I won't lie, I was incredibly nervous before this race.  The 2 previous races I had got PBs, and by some substantial margins.  I felt pressure from myself, I wanted a sub 55 and I knew just how hard that was going to be.  Nerves kicked in as I stood at that start line.  I tried to block it and just played the route in my head.  The crowd began to move forward, the race had begun.

I crossed the line at 5 minutes, I knew I had 5 minutes to deduct next time I saw the timer.  We began with a slight up and past some houses.  I had a nice comfortable pace, focused on the runners ahead and went with it.  2.5km was my focal point and a water station.  Felt happy at this point, next stop the Minster at half way.  Through the streets of York, up hills and down hills, lots of twists and turns.  Then I could hear the bells.  Half way was approaching.

Half way point and I still felt OK, runners all around me and some rather tight corners to negotiate.  Down onto the canal path and ready for the next water station at 7.5km.  Over a small bridge that felt would have been more in place on ninja warrior and on to the water station.  Bottles without lids, what is that about, few sips and off again.  Last 2km to go.

My average split time was lower than I needed and I knew it would take something for me to achieve what I needed.  Down and past the Terry's factory, rather pretty I thought before on to the final km.  Here you could see the finish before it twisted cruelly away and out of view.  So close yet so far.  The 400m flag in front of me and I turned up the speed.  Not very speedy mind you, I don't run that fast but still I kicked and went for it.

I could see the finish and the timer in front.  I knew it would be really close so I gave it everything.  I crossed the line and went rather wobbly.  Grabbed a goody bag and went and sat on the grass, waiting for a text to tell me my time.

My phone bleeped.

Dare I open the text message.  I knew I had given it everything, I could have done no more.

54:26

I almost screamed!  I had done it, sub 55 and a new pb!

It might be a while before I beat that but it felt good!

In all honesty they thought of spending all day in a shopping centre with three kids doesn't sound very appealing, especially when you throw into the mix the school holidays.  Yet at the end of last week this is exactly what we did, and actually had rather a fantastic day out!  I was taken by surprise by how much fun we did have, and also how little we spent.

Last week we visited York Designer Outlet.  The girls needed a few last minute things for school, including feet measured for school shoes, and I had a few bits to pick up for a race over the weekend.  First things first, we needed to get our priorities straight and all have some lunch.  Whilst plenty of choice we settled for a favourite, Pizza Express.

I wish I had gotten the person who served us name as he was absolutely fantastic and deserves a mention.  Going out of his way to talk to the kids and entertain them.  It made a huge difference.  Three happy kids with full tummies we set off to do a spot of shopping.

The girls feet haven't grown since their last school shoes, so they didn't need new shoes.  Little Man did, so we picked him up a pair.  We found all the things the girls needed.  New school jackets, P.E kits, trainers and some bits for junior parkrun.  I found the hydration vest I needed along with a light weight jacket for running.  A rather successful shopping trip.

York designer outlet also have a range of activities on for the kids over the summer, Summer Social.  In a rather large outdoor space, decorated with large bean bags, tables and chairs in bright colours, and live musicians we found circus skills.  The activity does vary but even so the space was simply beautiful to sit and chill, take some time out from shopping.

The girls wasted no time trying out new skills. My eldest determined to walk on the stilts, and my youngest wanting to do everything!  I got to play too, showing my eldest my stilt walking skills and my youngest how to spin a plate, that was until Little Man took a shinning to it!

The summer social space also features talented musicians.  Whilst there the entertainer was having rather a lot of fun with the children.  They were joining in with her, making different voice changes and it was lovely listening to the kids laughing and having fun with music too.

A ,,ore permanent addition to York designer outlet is the playground.  Plenty for all three of my children to do, although it was a little busy and given the size of the playground made it tricky to watch all 3 at one point.  My youngest daughter got stuck in a coil, only her!  Little Man really did not want to get back in the pushchair after playing with his sisters!

It was nearing 5 before we headed for one final treat, cake and a hot drink!  I actually could not believe we had spent an entire day at the outlet without one child complaining they were bored.  I think that is a win in itself, let alone we managed to find all the items on our list.

We had a wonderful day at York designer outlet and are looking forward to our next visit

It dawned on me this week that I had not wrote about our half term.  I noticed I had drafted the post and got all the images together but not finished writing the post.

Our February half term was one filled with a very poorly Little Man.  A combination of teething and cold left him feeling very under the weather.

I completed my first race of the year and then spent the rest of the week with the virus Little Man had caught.  I was completely under the weather with a sore throat and cough.

After a few days staying at home, listening to audio books, playing games and generally trying to get over the illness that had set in, we decided to venture out for a day trip to York.

I wasn't aware until recently that you could download audio books for children from Audible.  I have downloaded some of the classics from my childhood, including several Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton books for the girls to listen to.  They love listening to them both in the car and when we travel on the train and for the train journey to York they kept the girls entertained.

Our first stop in York was the railway museum.

The girls began by exploring the trains in the great hall and my youngest desperate to help tried to move the suitcases.  Unfortunately I didn't have the heart to tell her they were stuck to the platform as part of the display.  She did put in all her effort!

There was an old fashioned fairground outside.  I bought the girls some tokens and let them pick which they wanted to go on.  They wanted the helter skelter but were denied entry as my eldest was too short and my youngest too young, the second choice was the swings.

My eldest daughter then had a fall in the playground and we had to go inside to seek medical help.  Luckily she was Ok and we decided to take it easier and look at some more of the trains.  The railway museum is very hands on and the girls loved exploring the inside of the trains

We could have easily spent a lot longer at the Railway museum.  There were plenty of talks, and activities to keep us busy but we decided to go and explore and see what else York had to offer.

We made sure we adjusted our dress before leaving......

I love exploring the streets of York.  I always seem to find something new.  The streets are all different, unique and all have such a charm about them.  The feel was very different from the last time we visited as it had been over the Christmas period

We walked passed a wide variety of shops, stopping to look in the windows as we passed.  The girls eyes getting wider as they saw chocolate and sweets shops, before dashing to a giant bear outside the teddy bear shop.

The girls asked if we could find Vikings as we walked around York and sure enough we happened to stubble upon some.  My youngest took it upon herself to do battle and I admit to feeling very nervous as she was handed a REAL viking sword.

She seemed to really get into character and enjoyed becoming a viking!

After a day walking round and exploring York it was time for dinner.  With both girls loving Pizza there could only be one choice and that was the PizzaExpress restaurant on the banks of York’s River Ouse.  The view from here looks straight over the River Ouse and it is stunning.  I want to return for lunch in the summer as I can bet it is the best place to sit out in the sun in York.  As it was I had two poorly children, it was dark, cold and raining and so we opted to sit inside.

The interior of PizzaExpress York River House has just gone through a major refurbishment and you would be forgiven for thinking you were in a luxury hotel, rather than a PizzaExpress restaurant.  The interior really surprised us, especially with the beautiful fire place [I couldn't get a picture as it was too close to another family who were eating!].

Little Man began to get really poorly and very upset.  He just wanted to be cuddled and held tight.

We decided to finish our dinner and head home.  We will however be returning to PizzaExpress York River House as the whole setting is beautiful.

We spent another day at home relaxing and giving Little Man time to recover before heading out on a very exciting adventure, that however is another post!

With Grandma having the day off work we decided to spend the day having an adventure.  The girls have been asking to go ice skating since our trip to Edinburgh and I found availability at Yorkshire Winter Wonderland.  First though we had a very important stop to see Granddad at the airfield.

The girls and Little Man loved visiting Granddad, and both girls are eager to spend more time with the planes but we could not stop too long as Granddad was needed with the planes and we had reservations at the ice rink.

Whilst I had pre booked our time I was not able to pre book the helpers [those penguin/snowman things] and was informed they were all booked out for our session, alternatively we could move to a later session and have a skate aid.  This meant we had a bit of time to wait so we made the most of it by having a hot chocolate.

Followed by spending some time on the Fairground rides.  My eldest seemed to love the Dodgems although she drove very wild and I think was aiming for all the other cars.  The fairground was full of traditional rides.  The girls were just too small to ride the majority if them but they still had plenty of fun.

Before we knew it it was time to put on our skates and head out to the ice.

The girls were armed with their snowmen, and I was wondering how the next hour would go with two children on the ice.  My eldest insisting she did not need the snowman or any help, but I managed to convince her to at least start with the snowman.

As the hour progressed the girls grew in confidence, my youngest seemed to take to it with ease whilst my eldest needed a little more practise.  By the end of the hour both girls were skating confidently [with their snowmen] and even attempted without any help.

We left the ice and both girls stood at the side of the rink watching as the more professional skaters took to the ice.  They stood captivated by the twirls and tricks.

As we left both girls asked to return to skate again, I feel we shall be making another visit to Yorkshire Winter Wonderland.

This Day I love Yorkshire Winter Wonderland

The ancient city of York is just over an hour away from our house.  Whilst York is accessible by car I highly recommend travelling by train.  The train station is just outside the city walls and around 5 minutes to walk into the centre.  York is wonderful to walk into, the girls absolutely love walking through the city walls and into the city itself.  It is such an easy, beautiful and pushchair friendly walk that travelling by train makes such an easy option.  As you walk through the city walls, you take a walk over the river Ouse which is a beautiful place to simply stop and watch the world go past.

We stood on the bridge and watched rowing boats, the boat tours and ducks all go past.  The side of the river is lined with hotels and cafes and my youngest loved to watch people go about their daily lives.

York is well sign posted but if in any doubt simply head towards York Mister, the iconic towers can be seen for miles around.

As the seasons change York changes too.  Ghost tours take you on a mysterious walk through the city and delves into its gruesome history.  The railway museum, located right next to the train station, has plenty to see and do and you can easily spend a day here.  There are plenty of theatres to watch a show, or even head to Jorvik to learn more about the history of York.  We wandered around looking at the Christmas festivities, a living nativity with real Donkeys caught our eye situated by the base of York Minster.

Christmas markets featuring the best of Yorkshire.  An indoor market selling local produce and hand made items, for the truly unique gift.  The indoor and outdoor markets were bustling with shoppers looking for the unique and perfect Christmas gift.  The girls eyes lit up at all the items on the stalls.

Christmas would not be Christmas without chocolate, well in our house anyway!  York Chocolate story provides an insight into the history of Chocolate in York.

We took a tour and delved deep into the history of chocolate.  The girls listened intently and got to sample chocolate throughout history.

Before receiving a lesson in the correct way to sample chocolate!  I was so surprised they followed the instructions and resisted temptation to eat all the chocolate.

Little Man however found it rather difficult to resist temptation!

There is something truly special about visiting the ancient city of York.  There are cobbled streets, with their quirky original buildings.  A mismatch of architecture that simply adds to the charm of York.  The streets are bustling with people going about daily life, with the mix of tourists stopping to look at all the different sights.  Each street has something unique about it, no two are the same.  Independently owned cafe, coffee shops and products are around every corner which for me adds to the charm of York.  York is a place where old meets new, and where you get a real sense of a cities history.  A wonderful family friendly city that offers something for everyone!

We had a wonderful 12 hours in York and cannot wait to visit again!

This day I love 12 hours in York
