This day I love.......

In just over a weeks time I am going to be taking on the Yorkshire marathon, again.  It is fair to say the first time I did this things did not go according to plan.  Still, an achievement completing a marathon and even more so pregnant, but this time that course and I have history.  A history so deep that I am now having mini panic attacks about it, I am not sleeping right and my head is playing the route over and over.  I have worked hard this time, train hard and am fuelling better than I was before.  I would say right, but I still love cake.

Mornings are perhaps the hardest to get breakfast right.  It involves rushing around trying to feed three children and the dog.  By the time I realise it is almost time for school and there is a mad dash to get dressed in time.  Breakfast though is the one to get right.  It is the one that sets you ready for the rest of the day.  The girls go to school on a full stomach, they can concentrate more on their work and not sat thinking about when it is lunch time.  They go to school with breakfast and they have more energy to concentrate and to play at play time.  I notice a difference in me too, I snack less if I have had a good breakfast and I have more energy to fuel my runs too, allowing me to run better.

Quick breakfasts that are healthy and low in sugar are difficult to find.  Ready Brek offers a solution that the whole family enjoy.  Made from wholegrain oats, it is rich in Calcium, Vitamin D and high in oat fibre.  It even has no added sugar or salt, given a bowl of Ready Brek is ready in under 90 seconds it is a quick and healthy breakfast.

The smooth texture of Ready Brek makes it perfect for the whole family, even Little Man at 18 months enjoys it.  We can vary the taste of Ready Brek to suit our own individual preferences.  My eldest loves hers with honey, my youngest loves strawberries in hers and Little Man loves cinnamon and raisins in his.

I have added Ready Brek into my banana and peanut smoothies to make it even more filling before I head out on my long runs.  Ready Brek is also versatile as it can be used in cooking.  It can be used in toppings for crumble, with melted butter for the base on a cheesecake or even in cookies to make Oatmeal and Raisin cookies.

Am not sure what it is about breakfast or lunch but I always seem to be stuck for inspiration.  Resorting to carbs, carbs and more carbs.  Little Man prefers finger foods and I really want to give him variety and let him experience new flavours, so when I was invited by Piccolo to a lunch date with Piccolo I could not say no.

We arrived in London and were greeted by Alice Fotheringham who is the infant nutrition expert at Piccolo.  Alice is incredibly talented and as we walked through the front door we were greeted with lots of yummy food cooking away.  Little Man was made to feel incredibly welcome and got stuck in playing with all the lovely food toys!

Our starting point was breakfast and with that we began making porridge fingers!  I love recipes that involve non exact measurements as it makes cooking so much easier.  These porridge fingers were so easy to make and helps me to give Little Man something to hold for breakfast that is not toast!

With inspiration for breakfast next it was time to tackle lunch.  For this we made egg muffins, again a quick simple mix it all together recipe and one I can recreate at home.  Little Man however had his own plans.....

He promptly started stealing all the food and eating it, taking a particular liking to the courgettes!

The time simply flew by and my head was brimming with inspiration for our own lunch and breakfast over the next few weeks.  Of course, you cannot cook without preparing your own lunch.

Safe to say with all this delicious food in front of us there was not one single plate with any food left on it!

Thank you Piccolo for inviting us to lunch and to cook with you.  We had a fantastic time and left full of inspiration [as well as some lovely food!].

This day I love Lunch with Piccolo

Am not sure why but my girls seem to wake up earlier during the school holidays than they do for school. They wake up and the first thing they ask for is breakfast. I am not very imaginative when it comes to breakfasts, usually because I am tired and haven't got the functionality at that time to think. I do though want my girls to have a healthy start to their morning, one that is quick and simple and requires minimal thinking.

Ready brek is perfect for this. Made from finally milled whole grain oats, it delivers all the nutritious and healthy benefits of adult porridge but without the lumps. A bowl of ready brek is ready in around 90 seconds in the microwave, making it a quick simple and healthy choice in the mornings.

I also admit to liking ready brek, the smooth constancy makes it perfect for adding fruit, honey or even jam to, giving some variety each morning to breakfast. Ready brek is available in original or chocolate flavour, and we will be looking out for the chocolate having tried original so far.

Ready brek also recently redesigned their packaging to include a warm friendly bear. The girls did ask if I ate the breakfast would I turn into a bear, and this has now become a running joke in our house. The girls find the bear friendly and now ask for the breakfast with the bear on. I know that when school starts again in September the girls can have a warm, filling breakfast ready for a full day at school and one they really like.

When the girls woke up this morning they were a little confused.  I had not made them breakfast and it was not sat waiting from them like usual.  Instead they were told to get dressed as we would be having breakfast somewhere special.  We arrived at our local Wyevale garden centre and was greeted by an elf who gave us directions for breakfast, the girls were now very excited.

Another elf showed us to our table and the girls got stuck in straight away pulling Christmas crackers whilst waiting for breakfast to arrive.

There was even time to do a spot of festive colouring.

Breakfast was full English for all of us and my youngest kept saying 'Beans?for breakfast?'  They rarely have a full English so it is a treat for them to have one.  I was surprised at how much they did eat, especially given the excitement of all the elves!

The elves said the girls had been really good at eating all their breakfast and so deserved a treat.  First however they needed to sing Jingle bells.  As they came to the end of Jingle bells they got a real surprise as in walked Father Christmas!

The girls were a little star struck but soon got round to having a chat and a giggle with Father Christmas

After all the excitement the girls sat back down at the table and began creating some festive ginger biscuits.

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning.  The girls had a wonderful time and I think are going to want to do this every morning.

This day I love a surprise for breakfast

Thanks to Wyevale garden centre for providing us with tickets for Breakfast with Father Christmas.  All words are my own opinion.

I have heard it said that the way to a Man's heart is through his stomach.  I think my husband falls into this saying, he enjoys his food.  I think one of the things he would love for Valentines day would be breakfast in bed.

The question is what shall I make?

Option 1

Shall I go for the easy option of a nice cup of tea, cereal and a banana?  It would be easy to make and mean I can get to my breakfast much faster [selfish I know]

Option 2

Bacon Sandwich and coffee.  We all love a bacon sandwich in this house, it is our tradition to have a bacon sandwich on a Sunday morning.  Valentines day falls on a Saturday which means we would have bacon sandwiches on a Saturday and a Sunday, is that too many bacon sandwiches?  My husband isn't a big coffee drinker, but when he does he enjoys a proper cup of coffee.  This would mean I would need to buy him a coffee machine for Valentines day

Option 3

Full English breakfast and a cup of tea.  We both enjoy a full English and of course cooking one for him would mean I need to cook one for myself too.  I see this as win win.  However I would have a lot of washing up to do afterwards.

So which option do I choose? Let me know quick in case I need to buy anything in, or have you got any other suggestions.

I woke the girls up early last Saturday and told them we were going for breakfast with Grandma and then off shopping.  They were excited to see Grandma and even more to have breakfast out.  We were heading over to our local Wyevale Garden Centre for a special treat.

The lovely elves showed us to our table, which had been laid out just like a Christmas dinner

My youngest was too young to remember pulling a cracker but my eldest loved this.  The girls were so excited and loved this touch.  It made it very special for them.

Also on our table was some treats, a gingerbread tree and some icing.

Before we could begin decorating our tree breakfast arrived.

The girls couldn't believe their luck, they could have beans for breakfast!

We all started to eat our breakfast which had been brought to us by the elves.  Out of the corner of my daughters eye she spotted something.

Father Christmas had come for breakfast!

The girls could not quite believe it.  Father Christmas was here whilst they were having their breakfast.  To try and take their mind off the very special guest we began decorating our biscuits.

My eldest was incredibly pleased with her creation and it tasted yummy too

We seemed to time things really well because Father Christmas came over to say hello just as she took a bite.  My eldest had drawn him a picture which she took great pride in handing to him

She was so happy that he had come over to speak to her and that he liked her drawings

It was really lovely to watch her smile and laugh and see how magical it was for her that Father Christmas had come to breakfast.

Father Christmas made a special effort to visit every table and spend time with every family and this was so lovely.  He didn't rush and all the children were so happy that they got to meet him like this.  We were then given the opportunity to have our photo taken with Father Christmas.

The girls got to pick their gift from a selection available on the table.  I liked this because it meant you could choose something appropriate to the children.  Also there was no arguments over wanting what the other one has.

After a really lovely breakfast it was time for Father Christmas to leave

The girls had a really lovely time and a great breakfast.  They were so happy and could not stop smiling all day.

This day I love Breakfast with the man in the red suit.

We were given tickets for breakfast but all words are my own opinion.

You may have seen my tweets recently, the school run is always a rush. The cold wet weather is not helping as we walk to school. I often don't have time to have my breakfast as I wake up at 5.45 most mornings and then promptly get the girls and the dogs seen to. I often don't manage to get anything to eat until I get back from the school run.

9bar recently heard my tweets and sent me a rather lovely hamper to help me in the mornings. An alarm clock to keep me on time, an umbrella to help me in the cold and a thermos so I can have some hot chocolate (I can't drink tea or coffee) to warm me up on the school run. Best of all the hamper contained a selection of 9bar.

9bar do not include any additives or unnatural ingredients. They contain a blend of wholesome seeds and some contain crunchy nuts. My favourite two are peanuts and raisin and the cashew and cocoa. I was really impressed with the texture and taste of 9bar, it wasn't too sweet yet it still had a good flavour. I could eat it whilst taking the girls to school and I felt full up until lunch time too. Meaning no mid morning snacking which was usually the case with other cereal type bars.

I want to say thank you to 9bar for providing me a breakfast that is nutritional, maintains my energy levels and contains essential building blocks for good health. A breakfast that keeps me full until lunch and gives me all the energy I need to get through a busy day.

I am pleased to be able to offer a gveaway to win a 9bar hamper.  Follow the instructions on the Rafflecopter for a chance to win.  The giveaway ends on 27th November 2014 at midnight GMT.  Open to UK residents aged 18 and over.

Before my eldest started school I wanted to try and fit in as much as possible with the girls together.  My Mum had seen an advert in the local paper for a Princess breakfast at a local hotel.  Not knowing what to expect only that it sounded something the girls would like I booked tickets.

We arrived at the hotel and were shown to our table.  The girls were not too sure what was happening, and then in walked the Princess' and Superheroes.  Snow White, Maleficent and Iron Man started walking past.

The girls chose their breakfast and ate it whilst keeping one eye on the Princess' walking past.

After breakfast it was time for some Princess themed stories.  I don't think I have ever seen so many dressed up as their favourite Princess before.

The girls then settled down to do some colouring and a spot of Princess mask painting.

Before taking part in several Princess party games.

It was a really lovely morning and one the girls will remember for a long time.  I am keeping my eye on the local paper for the next one, although if it is during term time it will be with just my youngest.

This day I love Princess Breakfast.

A lot has changed in 30 years.  30 years describes my whole life, a lot has changed for me.  In 1983 I was experiencing my first year of life, learning to walk, talk and all those amazing things my youngest daughter is currently doing now.  This was me then

me

Unlike Special K, which for the first time in 30 years Kellogg's is updating with a new 3 grain [previously 2] recipe, I think I have updated quite a lot.  I can now walk and talk although some times I don't make much sense.  In 1983 I was learning the basics and since then have gone on to complete a Masters in Engineering. 30 years a whole life time.

Perhaps the only thing that has remained the same in those 30 years is my appetite.  Yes I have always liked my food, in particular breakfast.  I don't function without it.  Should you ever meet my Dad he will gladly tell you the honey story to back this up.  The thing is is I have a sweet tooth.  Whilst I am health conscious, most of the time, I do love my sweet things.

Perhaps this was why previously I never really enjoyed the taste of Special K.  Now when asked if I wanted to try the new recipe cereal I thought why not, I am open minded and happy to give it a go.  The new recipe, as previously mentioned, is now 3 grains instead of 2.  It contains rice, wheat and barley and is made with wholegrain.  It provides a good source of fibre and 8 vitamins and minerals.  I was somewhat surprised, as it tasted nice.  I actually enjoyed it, me the person who has perhaps the sweetest tooth, cannot turn down cake and would eat chocolate at all meals, enjoyed a healthy cereal that can even help weight control.

#specialk30

This is great news for me as the other thing that's changed in 30 years is my body shape.  At one point I could have worn the 'special K red swimsuit' probably in my early twenties, but after 2 children I am wanting to slim back down.  I think I shall participant in the My special K challenge, as what I will gain when I loose, is my self confidence back.  That confidence from my twenties when I thought I could have it all and do it all.

Yes a lot has changed for me in the last 30 years but by far the best is my two grains, my two little girls and who knows maybe one day, like special K I might even have 3?
