This day I love.......: interior

My youngest daughters bedroom was one of the first to be decorated when we moved into our house. At the time she was a baby and her room was decorated as a nursery not really knowing her personality or likes at this point and whilst it was nicely decorated it wasn't really 'her'. She's now older with a mind of her own and very strong opinions of what she likes. Her favourite colour is rainbow and sparkles, in other words she likes them all and that to some extent is her, she's loving, caring and if you could stereotype a young girl then she would fit that mould perfectly.

Her room therefore now needs to reflect her and last her until the very least her teenage years. I have spent hours on pinterest looking at ideas for her room. Coming up with plans and then changing them at the last second. Murals Wallpaper contacted me and offered to work with me, perfect timing. The hard part was still to follow, picking a design.

My youngest daughter scrolled through the site looking at all the different designs. She kept swapping and changing her mind as there are lots to choose from, that is until she saw a pink paper with stars on. She didn't change her mind again after seeing this paper and so I could now plan the rest of her room around it.

Ordering is really easy, measure the wall you are wanting the paper for and place an order with those dimensions. The print is made to fit exactly in those dimensions, so I measured several times before submitting the order. The paper arrives rolled in a cardboard tube and contains very clear instructions about what tools you need and how to hang the paper.

The whole mural is printed on to one sheet of paper, but to make things easy you are clearly shown where to cut each piece. No need to measure out each piece and no need for a pasting table.

In addition each drop is clearly labelled so if you do want to cut all the pieces in advance you also know which piece is next. Making the whole process a lot easier than using standard wallpaper.

In fact the whole process was really simple. It took approximately 30 minutes to paper the whole wall. That also includes having to find another pasting brush as one snapped. The paper feels really good quality and thick, so you can move and re position it without worrying too much about it tearing. The paste used is paste the wall so this removes the need for a pasting table. I bought ready mixed paste to make it even easier.

My daughter saw her bedroom for the first time this morning and her reaction was 'wow, I love it'. The mural design was exactly what she had seen online and had chosen. I used a grey glitter paint for the remaining walls to add extra sparkle. Her whole room has been transformed and suits her so much better.

Muralswallpaper has really made a difference to the room, giving it a an amazing feature wall that my daughter adores. The blind is on order and once it arrives I shall be putting up a YouTube video with the decorating and a room tour.

I have started this post so many times, I keep writing and rewriting as whatever I type doesn’t seem to do justice to how I feel right now. I am just so incredibly happy. I really cannot put it into words what it means to me to have my own space at long last. A space I can work in, a space the children can join me whilst I work, a space to work out in and I space I can setup to expand my photography business too. I space that all these things can co exist but without feeling cluttered and overwhelmed, I just love it.

The walls have been painted a modern and neutral grey, the light still reflects really well and the room feels clean and modern. I opted for modern white furniture from JYSK, the Danish-owned global furniture chain, in order to keep with the modern feel for the room. The furniture arrived flat packed, and I have to say I was surprised when the desk was in one box. I was eager to build them and wanted to do so when Little Man was napping, only he had other ideas and wanted to help me too.

Within 10 minutes I had screwed the feet onto my sofa, the only assembly that was required, and that was with Little Man helping me. After 15 minutes I had built my desk, complete with draw. There was no stopping me, Little Man was helping by placing random screws in places and using the allen key for everything and anything. The hardest thing to build was the bookcase, but that was mainly due to Little Man wanting to climb on the shelves as I was trying to assemble them. Within 45 minutes I had built a Sofa, desk and bookcase and the furniture was ready to be positioned in the room.

I could not be more impressed, as you would never know the furniture was self assembly. Each piece feels solid and well manufactured. It has withstood a 1 year old trying to assemble them and myself moving them around the room to get them positioned in the correct place.

When I pictured my office space in my head I wanted clean and modern and uncluttered. I tend to think better when things are put away, everything in its place, and so storage was a big must have for me. I wanted to draw some inspiration from Hygge – the Scandinavian practice of making calming, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful spaces at home, and feel I have achieved this.

My office space is everything I could have wanted and more. Beautiful modern furniture from JYSK, calm and peaceful place to work and a beautiful addition to our home. I could not be happier.

I recently published the survey results from the JYSK feel the happiness report and ranked number 1 was a clean and tidy house. I love it when the house is clean and tidy and feel it much easier to relax. Working from home and having three young children running around means this occurrence is rare. What also perhaps does not help is that I have no space to work, or no designated work area.

Before Little Man arrived I had an office, it was the small bedroom, and then the arrival of Little Man meant my office was converted into a nursery. Each item from my office ended up in random rooms around the house, leaving me feeling rather disjointed. I have longed for a space again that I can call my own, a place for me to work and where everything is all together. A reorganisation of rooms has now meant I have a work space at long last.

First on the list was painting the walls a more neutral colour. The girls wasted no time in helping.

Now the painting is complete I can begin to arrange the space. With the Danish-owned global furniture store, JYSK, opening its 2,500th store worldwide recently there were plenty of amazing products for me to choose from to complete the look I wanted. I am wanting to create a cosy space, that whilst is productive for me to work in is also comfy and relaxing for the girls to sit with me whilst I do so. Ultimately I would love to have plenty of storage space and a dedicated work space, whilst drawing inspiration from Hygge – the Scandinavian practice of making calming, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful spaces at home. JYSK are experts in sleeping and living and I found exactly what I was looking for.

I have measured and have space for a comfy sofa which means that although this will be my work area the girls can still come and keep me company. A beautiful desk to work at, which gives me a dedicated work area. Most importantly plenty of storage space. I cannot wait to share with you the finished area. I have just returned home from a run. A planned 8 mile run cut short due to the heavy rain. I can hear the rain beating down on the glass outside. I stand in the dark hallway cold and soaked to the bone. The door to the front room opens, my youngest daughter reaches out and asks for a hug. Our dog jumps up excitedly to greet me. Little Man snoring away through the baby monitor.

After a shower I return downstairs to sit on the sofa between my girls. Snuggled together under a throw, lights low to help the girls unwind and the dog fast asleep on the rug. We sit there together, warm and cosy, for half hour before bed. It is so quiet I can hear the girls breathing, it is peaceful and I feel happy.

This time together is so precious, the girls at school all day and my training meaning I am spending most evenings running. The idea behind Hygge is to forget life’s worries, to unwind and relax and to feel as at-home as possible. Whenever I return from a run and cuddle my children this is the moment I feel as at-home as possible. In the winter though this seems to feel even more special. Perhaps the dark outside adds to the mood. The warmth inside. The soft cuddly cushions and throw on the sofa are so inviting for a cuddle when I come in from the cold.

Spring is in the air and with it the desire to clean and unclutter. The house begins to be filled with the warmer spring air and the house is seen in a new light. A desire to update, or simply refresh is felt and we begin searching for the latest trends.

I’ve been looking around the internet to see what modern room themes could work for my home and whether it’s the latest industrial kitchen chic, or even the luxurious range of TV beds, it looks like there’s lots of fun to be had.

Keeping it minimal

With the imminent arrival of Thing 3, I have been trying to have a bit of a declutter. Tidying each room and donating to charity unused items. A third child means more clothes, toys and baby items and so space is at a premium. I have tried to keep the nursery as clutter free as possible and make best use of the space available.

Making a statement

One of the big things about modern interiors is the way that they’re not afraid to make a big statement through a particular piece of furniture or aesthetic motif. For example, this bedroom uses just a few bold items such as a bright red bedside table and a striking contemporary painting to provide bursts of colour against the cool and classy decor. There are, of course, few better ways to make a statement than by investing in a modernist piece of furniture. It could be a striking bedside cabinet or a fun globe chair, and also there are cheap TV beds available at the Bedstar website that are the perfect example of how modernist furniture can be seriously luxurious, as well as stylish and chic.

Futuristic themes

Implementing technology in a thoughtful manner is another way to give your decor a modern revamp. Whilst I hate endless cables and power adaptors trailing over our living room, by narrowing down all of the clutter into a few multipurpose devices, it can suddenly make our homes feel a little more modern.

I would love a new kitchen but it is a little out of our budget at the moment, I do love this modern kitchen that features industrial touches such as shiny metallics that are nicely contrasted to the retro mint green lamps.

Whether it’s a nice and bright new colour scheme, or even an extravagant new TV bed, there’s much that can be done to give our homes that extra special modern touch!
