This day I love.......

The cold weather seems to be on its way.  The school routine is back in full force and the dark nights seem to be slowly creeping earlier and earlier.  Reflective gear is now a requirement for running and the girls are wrapping up in more and more layers for school.

It feels like the Summer holidays were a life time ago, yet in reality the girls have been back at school for 3 weeks.  Those new uniforms I bought at the start of term are well and truly worn, the shoes are looking less shiny and homework is once again a normal part of our weekend.  Our weekends taken up with making the most of our time together and walking the dog.

Looking back over the summer holidays we filled it with so much fun.  Weekend trips to the seaside and long road trips to Scotland and to Brighton too.  A summer full of adventure, my youngest learning to ride a bike and Little Man growing in confidence.

As we settle back into the school routine the girls have been eased in gently with some reading from Maverick.  Maverick have sent us two new titles:

Hamster Sitter Wanted - Tracy Gunaratnam and illustrated by Hannah Marks
Clumpety Bump - Phil Allcock and illustrated by Richard Watson

Hamster sitter wanted has become Little Mans book of choice recently.  I am not sure if it is the fantastic details in the illustrations or the humorous prose he likes, but either way he has a liking for this book.  I rather like the adventures Marco and Polo, clever names for 2 adventurers, get up to.  The question is can they find the perfect hamster sitter for their cousins?  Will it be a giraffe who practises Yoga? or a Sheep that knits? You will have to read the book and find out!

A book which has a character by the name of Wally Wobblebottom is certain to have both girls laughing out loud each time the book is read.  It never fails to make them giggle.  I tend not to read the story for bedtime as they do find it rather amusing.  My youngest is very similar to Clumpety Bump too, she loves to make people happy and she loves her food!  A book we can certainly relate to.

We now begin to look forward to Autumn.  The school routine well and truly in place.  Leaves will soon be lining the walk to school and the girls will soon be filling their pockets with conkers.  Whilst we certainly had a wonderful summer, it is also great to get back into a routine and hopefully I can tidy the house before half term!

We are always delighted when we receive a package from Maverick books.  The girls always rush to open up the wrapping to discover what is inside.  This month we have been treated to two knew books and to a selection of Mavericks Early Readers.

Our first book was The Snugglewump by Lou Treleaven and with beautiful illustrations by Kate Chappell.  The Snugglewump is a very emotional tale written with beautiful rhymes.  The Snugglewump is not like the other toys and feels unloved.  The story which follows highlights how important each of us are and that we are all loved.  I think this is such an important message to highlight to children and love the way it has been delivered in this story.

Wishker written by Heather Pindar and illustrated by Sarah Jennings is our second book from Maverick.  My eldest daughter likes to read this book to her siblings and to herself.  The story helps to highlight the reason why getting everything you want is not always a good idea.  It certainly has made the girls think!

Maverick Early readers help children to read some of their favourite Maverick stories at home.  There are eight coloured bands, following the system used in schools, and by the end of August there will be five books in each band.  Our primary school uses these books as part of the additional [optional] reading the children can take part in.

My youngest daughter has been reading these books on an evening and enjoys the stories.  The illustrations are bright and colourful and help to engage her in the story.  She has used her phonics knowledge to help her read the books and they have proven to be a real hit in the evenings.  I think they are a great way to enhance reading at home in addition to school reading books and gives my daughter a choice as to what she wants to read.

Thank you to Maverick for sending the titles across for review, all words are my own opinion.

We made a decision not to let the girls take their tablets on our next holiday.  A brave move maybe, but one we felt a good idea.  During the day there is enough to keep the girls entertained, and whilst they do use them at home it is certainly not a daily occurrence.  Instead I have pre loaded my phone with a few apps, and armed the girls with colouring books, activity books and reading books.

I want to control the amount of time spent on an electronic device whilst we are on holiday and by using my phone I know I can keep better control of exactly what is used.  I am also keen to keep on top of my daughters learning whilst away, and whilst not in a pushy manner I would like to encourage them to learn through play.

One of the apps which is currently on my phone is Read with Phonics.  My youngest daughter loves this app, and in particular Albee the alien.  Albee is incredibly encouraging and helps to celebrate whenever they get a right answer.  The app has four worlds which you can explore, water world, forest world, lava land and jelly city.  Each has different sounds and as you complete a sound another is unlocked.  This encourages my daughter to keep wanting to play and learn new sounds.  As she correctly answers questions she gains points.  These points in turn help to improve the level and is a way to positively encourage her to want to learn and play.

The Read with Phonics app has really caught my daughters attention, she calls it the alien game.  She loves Albee and likes it when he joins in with her. The graphics really appeal to her and she wants to play.  Instructions are clear and simple and the games are fun and inviting.  She loves to learn and loves the challenges each set.

In addition to playing the apps on my phone my daughters have also taken some reading books.  My eldest has bought herself two new Roald Dahl books to read.  My youngest daughter has two new books from Maverick Books.

Fum

Fum is a lovely story written by Karl Newson and illustrated by Lucy Fleming.  The story is written in such a beautiful rhyming way.  It reads easily and the words flow so beautifully.  The story follows a giant family who are searching for the smallest member of their family, Fum.  As the story unfolds the members of the family encounter some characters from classic fairy tales.  The illustrations had the girls looking to see if they can find Fum.

How do you do, Mr Gnu?

This story had the girls laughing out loud.  It is one of those that you have to read with funny voices, and really immerse yourself into the story.  It is written by Billy Coughlan and beautifully illustrated by Maddie Frost.  Mr Gnu receives and invitation to tea with the Queen and decides he needs to learn manners for the big day, the question is will he?

Both girls also have a series of puzzle books that they have purchased and some colouring books.  Let's see how we get on on a flight.

Reading is such a wonderful gift, and one I love to share with my children.  During the day Little Man and I love reading a book together and he has now got to the age where he will crawl to the book shelf and point at his books.  Whilst he may not understand the story, what he does understand is that the book means a cuddle together and sitting close listening to his Mum.  It means quality time to him and something he loves.

Parragon books have a beautiful range of books, Little learners which is aimed at this precious age group, babies and toddlers.  The range has recently gone through a re vamp and we were delighted to take a look.

Little Learners box

Our Little Learners book box contained 5 titles:

Mummy and Baby - A beautiful book with different surfaces for baby to touch and explore.

Cow Says Moo  - A book with finger holes for the farm animals

I can Say please - A Really fun beek a boo play book

Mummy and Me - A finger puppet story book

Twinkle Twinkle little star - Light and sound story book

Parragon books Little learners books

Little Man rushed in to take a look in the box.  He began exploring each of the books, picking them up and looking at them.  Opening the books, testing them in his mouth and putting his fingers through the holes.

Little Man exploring books

His favourite though was 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'  The sounds and flashing lights I think drawing his attention.  Although it could have been the fact that each of his sisters would give him a cuddle and sing the song to him too!

Reading with his sister

The Little learners books are really popular with Little Man and his sisters.  My youngest who is at the start of her phonics journey picks the books up to read to her brother and my eldest will sit and sing the songs with him.  It is wonderful watching them all interact together and share the gift of reading.

Thank you to Parragon for sending the Little Learners books mentioned in this post, all words are my own opinion.

Earlier this month we received a package from Parragon books as part of their book buddy scheme.  Inside the package was the book 'Factivity Robots and Gadgets'

The girls were very excited to open their new book and wasted no time in getting stuck in.

Robots and gadgets

Factivity Robots and Gadgets contains 300 stickers and is packed full of activities.  The book is engaging throughout, with bright colourful graphics and activities which help to explain concepts.  One of the aspects I particularly like is how it encourages you to think.  No where is there a 'wrong way', it is use your imagination to, or pretend to be a, which are great ways to encourage learning.

Eldest solving problems

Stickers are used to enhance the learning by completing different tasks.  Often you find that the stickers are just an added extra to the books, in this case though they are part of the book and a useful addition to complete the different activities.  What is even more impressive is the book is up to date and speaking in a tone that the girls can relate to.  A book which can explain what a selfie stick is to a 4 year old, and she understands is to me somewhat impressive.

Youngest learning about robots

Factivity Robots and Gadgets encourages the girls to think, whilst at the same time answering all their robotic based questions.  It gets them involved to allow them to work out the answer themselves, but in such a fun manner that they become engrossed and not realise they are learning.  Not only is Factivity Robots and Gadgets great for teaching the girls about robots but it is a great activity book for the girls at any point, such as when travelling or on a rainy day.

The book was sent as part of our collaboration with Parragon books, all words are my own opinion.

Whenever we travel I always pack both girls a book each.  Reading a book takes the girls into an imaginative world and seems to help pass the time on our journeys.  The books act as more than something to read, often we use them to discuss certain themes or concepts and sometimes we use them to play games.  For our recent visit to York we were able to take with us two new books from Maverick.

Our first book was 'As Nice as pie' by Gary Sheppard and Tim Budgen.  A rhyming book with bright colourful cartoon like illustrations.  The girls did get a little worried the first time we read the book as to what would happen to the birds, but on subsequent readings find it rather funny.  I won't say as it may spoil the book.  I think the book is a great way to illustrate the importance of not taking someone for granted and not to take advantage of their kindness.

The second book was 'Stone Underpants' by Rebecca Lisle and illustrated by Richard Watson.  This book has crept into most bedtimes now.  My eldest can often be heard reading it out loud in her bedroom to her teddies, or to anyone who will listen.  The story is really light-hearted and a joy to listen to my daughter read.  For a book to engage her this much it is certainly something special.

Thank you Maverick books for sending over the new titles for us to read.
