This day I love.......

An invite to visit William's den arrived in my inbox, I hadn't heard of William's Den before but a quick google search gave me a good insight. A brand new adventure attraction that promised to give families the best day ever. If the best day ever was on offer, I had to go and experience for myself.

William's Den is located around a mile from South Cave in Hull. I am always worried when I visit somewhere new as to if I will find it ok, but actually it was really easy. Incredibly close to the A63 and it took us just under an hour from South Yorkshire. The buildings of William's Den are very sympathetic to the surrounding environment. As you drive down the country road the large teepee of the outdoor play area could be seen over the horizon and the new buildings built to represent the old grain stores.

The buildings have all been designed and built to be sustainable with solar panels on the roof, a rain water flush system in the toilets, biomass boiler and recycled materials for heating, insulation and building materials. I have to mention the toilets as they were fab, sorry not something I normally mention but I really have to. First there is no Male/Female toilet, instead they have toilets with baby changing facilities inside. Meaning a single parent visiting on their own, be it male or female, can change their child. There are extra wide cubicles so those with pushchairs can get in and special adapted cubicles with additional facilities for those that might need them. You can tell they were designed by parents.

We had arrived at lunch time and so our first stop was 'the Kitchen table'. My youngest ordered a den dog, I think that is what it was called, and my eldest a pizza. I also ordered a kids pizza to share with Little Man. Pizza is cooked in the wood fire oven and was just delicious, I wonder what the secret is to the dough they make? My youngest food arrived and I was impressed. It was proper food, and clearly not mass produced. There is an enclosed outdoor seating area with toys and play equipment to keep the smaller children entertained whilst you eat too.

After lunch we could get stuck into playing. First we tested the indoor play area. Little Man loved that he could go on with his sisters and that I could accompany him too. Everything in the den has been designed for the whole family to go on together, from the ages of 2 and up. All made from natural materials, there were large cargo nets, balance beams and wooden steps.

Little Man was chasing after his sisters and laughing as he did. He crossed the bridges and balanced his way across the wooden beams. We played the wooden drums and instruments and got lost in the den.

We found a hidden hideaway and looked out of the large glass windows over the stunning views. I would have loved to have had a sleep over here as a kid, it was the perfect setting to do so. After exploring the upper play areas we slid down the metal slide to the sand below. The girls found a tunnel and grass, pretend grass, to run over. A tree to climb and a rope swing to swing on.

Little Man then discovered the stream, his shoes and socks came off as he went for a paddle. Climbing the rocks and then climbing into the metal trough. He was splashing and having a really good time. He narrowly missed a drenching from the rainmaker, other children eagerly stood underneath awaiting the shower.

His sisters were busy in the sand, filling buckets to carry to the top before pouring them down the chutes to fill the bucket again. Little Man came over to join in.

My children would have happily spent an entire day in this indoor section and I actually had to persuade them that they wanted to see outside too. I am so pleased I did. The views over the meadow were beautiful and whilst we could have explored the meadow of wildflowers or the woodland we opted to stay and play.

Zip wires, tyre swings and a dedicated area to build dens with large sticks. Another playground with water and sand to explore. The girls however had spotted the tunnels and 'hills' and were running across the field to play and explore some more. Little Man running after them. They ran past the wooden beams tower and the tower of rocks to climb and instead spent their time running over the mountains and through the tunnels. My youngest then spotted something in the distance and ran once again.

She had found the mud kitchens!

That was it, Little Man was in his element. He had dirt that he could play with. All three of them started playing and using their imagination, apparently making chocolate brownies.

This was play as it should be. Three kids with the freedom to run around and explore and get dirty. Three kids happily playing together and using their imaginations to be creative. Three happy children.

This freedom, this ability to run around and explore and this flexibility for each of my children to adapt the environment to their own unique ways of play reminded me so much of my childhood. Exploring fields near by, climbing trees and playing in streams. This to me was what William's Den was all about. It was made even more special by the fact I could join in with my kids. I didn't see height restrictions or age restrictions. I just saw the freedom to play and the freedom to let kids be kids.

It was time for a treat, before playing some more. William's Den make their own ice cream and have won an award for their vanilla ice cream so it was a must have for us to try before our day finished. Given the speed at which the girls ate theirs I can say it was delicious!

As we were heading back outside to play my daughter spotted this sign, and given it was the day before her birthday she decided it was written especially for her!

Whilst we were invited to visit William's Den I would have happily paid to take my children and am in fact looking at when we can next go. They genuinely all enjoyed themselves. I would highly recommend taking a change of clothes and a towel, just in case. It was such a wonderful day out and one where we created lots of happy memories!

When I had the email to confirm my London marathon place my Mum and I decided to make a weekend of it and have some fun with the children in London. The question is what to do with 3 children the day before I was due to run a marathon. A rather timely email from Little Tikes was the answer. A day out playing in the outdoors.

Given the recent weather I was a little apprehensive when I replied saying yes but we actually had a wonderful sunny day, and in fact could not have wished for better weather for playing outdoors. Little Man got stuck in straight away with all the water play, and surprised himself when water came tumbling from above.

His sisters kept trying to trick him to stand underneath as it was about to tip but he seemed to always dodge at the last second.

Water play was followed by warming up with cuddles before exploring more that Little Tikes had to offer.

I would have thought the girls would have each had a scooter and Little Man a trike but instead all three went for the Cosy Coupes! Little Man found a Monster truck one, which we could not get him out of!

We followed the Little Trikes trail around the beautiful gardens, the children all in their Cosy Coupes.

By the side of the lake the girls found face painting

They both sat patiently and loved the finish results!

Little Man didn't want his face paining so busied himself with the sand table whilst he waited for his sisters.

Time seemed to go very quickly and before we knew it it was lunch time. Little Man discovered that a plate fitted nicely on the back of his truck and so he stayed put for lunch. The best seat in the house!

After lunch it was time for even more water play in a pirate boat themed water table, complete with pirates!

His sisters decided to make cakes, can you work out what they made?

We all had a wonderful day and were the last to leave. It was such a brilliant fun day that the girls were disappointed when I told them it was only for today. They kept asking to go back! I think it was the perfect way to spend the day before the marathon, thank you Little Tikes for inviting us to Bring back the outdoors!

The second we get home from the school run Little Man stands by the kitchen door and shouts 'outside'. He loves playing in the garden, running around, smelling the flowers and of course playing in the mud! He has so much fun and I love playing with him. The garden has become even more exciting recently with the addition of a bright coloured water play table from Step2.

We have had the water table inside recently, only instead of water I placed lots of bright coloured balls inside it. Little man loved it and used the handy 'leap pad' to bounce balls all over the room. The nice weather has now meant we can take the table outside and put water in it in addition to the balls I added.

The table requires minimal assembly when it arrives, it took me less than 5 minutes to assemble. Once built it is actual quite stable and robust as my son at 2 years old keeps climbing into it without any issue. As well as the table you also get a frog, which squirts water, a flower shaped scoop and two rubber ducks!

The frog can leap in from the side on the lily pad or slide down the slide with the ducks. I am impressed from a practical perspective that I can get under the slide to clean it so that water does not stay under it and develop mould. In fact practically I am very impressed. The water is easy to drain away as there is a very easy to use plug and I can access all different areas of the table to give it a wipe down clean.

Little Man of course loves it too and it's lovely to play with him. His favourite is the scoop. He likes watching the water fall through the holes in the scoop and he likes that he can throw water into the air to cover me in it!

Whilst he loves throwing water at me, he also really loves the spinning wheel in the middle of the table. When there is lots of water in the table, it can hold 15l, this is fun for splashing and making waves. With less water it is still fun to spin round and see how fast you can make it spin.

We shall be making the most of our step2 table. Outside with water when it is warm and inside with the balls for when it is cold! Little Man certainly has a lot of fun playing!

All words are my own opinion, the table was sent in exchange for this review.

Ever since the postman delivered the Little Tikes Splash Face the girls have been itching to get outside and play. The problem however has been the weather. Snow, grey skies, rain and wind not to mention the cold temperatures are not the ideal condition for playing with a game in which you get very wet. So we waited and waited some more.

Yesterday it seems the weather Gods were looking down on us in favour. The sun shone. The temperature went above 20 and the wind was non existent. Perfect. The girls came home from school and were so happy to see I'd assembled Splash Face ready for them to play. It only took a quick 5 mins and the only tool I needed was a screwdriver. Off into the garden we went.

I used a hammer to ensure the pegs stayed in the ground, this was to make sure splash face stayed upright with all the tugging during the game and then I went to get the hose pipe. Here we encountered our one and only issue. The connector supplied on the Splash Face didn't fit with out hose pipe. The engineer in me wasn't going to be beaten. I rummaged around the kitchen found some electrical tape and wooden skewers and before you knew it I'd fashioned a fix to make the hose pipe stay in place.

Although only a temporary fix as I shall go and purchase a connector to ensure longer play. It mattered not. The girls began tugging and splashing each other. As they tugged the other got squirted with water. Much to the delight of their sibling. The garden was filled with shrieks of delight. Little man trying to get in on the fun too.

A temporary fix is just that, temporary. I had to keep putting the hose back on but that's no fault of Little Tikes, simply I need a different adaptor. The girls soaked to the bone but with huge smiles and lots of giggles. Little Man kept running off with the hose pipe and trying to get in on the fun.

Splash Face was certainly worth the wait. The girls loved it. Little man loved it. I best get to the garden centre and buy an adaptor so they can play for longer. I can see it featuring heavily in our garden during the warm weather.

Little Man loves water.  I had wanted to start swimming with him as I had with the girls from 6 weeks, but seemingly when it is your third child and you have two other children to organise it takes some time before you find swimming lessons to fit in with your other children and their time table.

Little Man however was very excited, kitted out in his new Konfidence swim wear we were ready to go.  first however he got distracted by the lockers and went to investigate.  His Konfidence swim wear did not restrict his movement whilst dry and he easily cruised along the lockers to investigate the keys hanging from them.

Little Man had the clown fish print for all his swimming gear, as I liked the pattern but there was plenty of choice including simple colours if you wished.  His Babywarma swimsuit was easy to get on and off and I could do so whilst he was standing up.  It wraps and fastens round him with velcro, and should I have needed to I could change his nappy without having to remove the whole suit.  When I took his suit off him to get dressed the water that came from him was lovely and warm, I know therefore he was warm in the pool.

The second we did get out the water he became interested once again in the lockers and he had no problems walking across to investigate even in wet swim gear.

In addition to his Babywarma swimsuit he also wore a Neo Nappy, which are compulsory in swim schools.  This over the top Neoprene nappy was one I was familiar with and can remember the girls wearing, it is designed to stop those unfortunate accidents in the water and is worn over the top of a swim nappy.  With the girls I had to search everywhere to find a reusable swim nappy, as I felt it such a waste to throw a nappy away after 30 minutes in the water.  Konfidence now have a reusable swim nappy and to make it even better it is a one size fits all option! [3 months to 30 months]

The AquaNappy has adjustable poppers and Velcros at the side, so you can adjust to fit your child.  Little Man seemed to enjoy wandering off in his as I tried desperately to get him dressed.  There was no need to add any inserts to it so it is ready to go straight from the packet and it can even be washed in the washing machine.

Little Man found it easy to move through the water and out of the water when both wet and dry! Even after several washes his kit still looks as good as new, which makes me really happy too!  We love going swimming together it is a great time for us to bond and after he usually has a big nap too!  His Konfidence kit is sure to last him for some time yet, which makes it great value for money, and I have to say I love the bright colours and patterns.

Thanks to Konfidence for sending the items mentioned in exchange for this post

Last week was a very surreal week indeed.  During my daughters gymnastic lesson I received an email saying ITV would be at our house in 30 minutes.  The piece they were shooting for was to do with screen time in children, and in particular for internet safety day.  Both my 6 and 4 year old have a tablet, and my eldest has access to one of my old laptops, so we are more than qualified to talk about screen time in children.

We have many security features in place to try and limit the exposure or access the girls have.  The main screen on their tablets are kids only, they need a code to access the internet and we have safety features on the network too.  However there are times when one of them is unsupervised on the internet.

The girls each have homework from school and often the best way for them to practise is to access on online resource.  I may therefore start one of them working on this online resource whilst working 1:1 with their sister on another task, before switching over.  Whilst neither of them, to my knowledge, has deviated from the task they have set, the potential to do so does exist.  This unsupervised access to the internet does have some structure but it still remains unsupervised.  There is however no other way to fit in the amount of homework each child has to complete, plus family time and our other activities.

This week I have also dug out the tuff spot.  I felt it was time to introduce Little Man to messy play, and we started off with water.  He was unsure at first, I think more to do with why we were doing this but then he got stuck in.

It wasn't long before the floor was covered in water and he has the biggest smiles!  Safe to say we will be doing more messy play over the next few weeks.

Little Man seems to have a real love for water and given how much he enjoyed messy play last week I can certainly see it featuring a lot more and probably a lot more water based play!

This day I love the week with the news and the water
