This day I love.......

I have started this post so many times, I keep writing and rewriting as whatever I type doesn’t seem to do justice to how I feel right now. I am just so incredibly happy. I really cannot put it into words what it means to me to have my own space at long last. A space I can work in, a space the children can join me whilst I work, a space to work out in and I space I can setup to expand my photography business too.  I space that all these things can co exist but without feeling cluttered and overwhelmed, I just love it.

The walls have been painted a modern and neutral grey, the light still reflects really well and the room feels clean and modern.  I opted for modern white furniture from JYSK, the Danish-owned global furniture chain, in order to keep with the modern feel for the room.  The furniture arrived flat packed, and I have to say I was surprised when the desk was in one box.  I was eager to build them and wanted to do so when Little Man was napping, only he had other ideas and wanted to help me too.

Within 10 minutes I had screwed the feet onto my sofa, the only assembly that was required, and that was with Little Man helping me.  After 15 minutes I had built my desk, complete with draw.  There was no stopping me, Little Man was helping by placing random screws in places and using the allen key for everything and anything.  The hardest thing to build was the bookcase, but that was mainly due to Little Man wanting to climb on the shelves as I was trying to assemble them.  Within 45 minutes I had built a Sofa, desk and bookcase and the furniture was ready to be positioned in the room.

I could not be more impressed, as you would never know the furniture was self assembly.  Each piece feels solid and well manufactured.  It has withstood a 1 year old trying to assemble them and myself moving them around the room to get them positioned in the correct place.

When I pictured my office space in my head I wanted clean and modern and uncluttered.  I tend to think better when things are put away, everything in its place, and so storage was a big must have for me.  I wanted to draw some inspiration from Hygge – the Scandinavian practice of making calming, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful spaces at home, and feel I have achieved this.

My office space is everything I could have wanted and more.  Beautiful modern furniture from JYSK, calm and peaceful place to work and a beautiful addition to our home.  I could not be happier.

I recently published the survey results from the JYSK feel the happiness report and ranked number 1 was a clean and tidy house.  I love it when the house is clean and tidy and feel it much easier to relax.  Working from home and having three young children running around means this occurrence is rare. What also perhaps does not help is that I have no space to work, or no designated work area.

Before Little Man arrived I had an office, it was the small bedroom, and then the arrival of Little Man meant my office was converted into a nursery.  Each item from my office ended up in random rooms around the house, leaving me feeling rather disjointed.  I have longed for a space again that I can call my own, a place for me to work and where everything is all together.  A reorganisation of rooms has now meant I have a work space at long last.

First on the list was painting the walls a more neutral colour.  The girls wasted no time in helping.

daughter painting walls

Now the painting is complete I can begin to arrange the space. With the Danish-owned global furniture store, JYSK, opening its 2,500th store worldwide recently there were plenty of amazing products for me to choose from to complete the look I wanted.  I am wanting to create a cosy space, that whilst is productive for me to work in is also comfy and relaxing for the girls to sit with me whilst I do so.  Ultimately I would love to have plenty of storage space and a dedicated work space, whilst drawing inspiration from Hygge – the Scandinavian practice of making calming, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful spaces at home. JYSK are experts in sleeping and living and I found exactly what I was looking for.

I have measured and have space for a comfy sofa which means that although this will be my work area the girls can still come and keep me company. A beautiful desk to work at, which gives me a dedicated work area.  Most importantly plenty of storage space.  I cannot wait to share with you the finished area.  Keep an eye on YouTube for a video soon of me putting the office together!

Last week the amazing feel the happiness giveaway with the Danish-owned global furniture chain JYSK ended.  The feel the happiness campaign was launched in conjunction with JYSK opening their 2,500th store.  A few days after announcing the winner I received a lovely message on Facebook from the winner who loves her prizes, she was certainly happy and it made my day to hear how happy she was too.  As part of the giveaway JYSK wanted to know what made you happy and the results have now been published.

The 2017 world happiness report showed the UK at number 19, rising from number 23, which means we are getting happier.  Norway, Denmark and Iceland in first, second and third places. The domination of the top spots by Scandinavian countries is down to many factors, one of which is Hygge – the Scandinavian practice of making calming, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful spaces at home. Hygge has gathered a huge following in British homes recently and it is perhaps no surprise that the survey results from JYSK feel the happiness campaign reflect this.

The British top 20: what makes us happiest at home.

1. Clean and tidy house – everything in its place
2. Favourite people and things all in one place
3. Pets – snuggling with cat/dog on the sofa
4. Playing with the kids
5. Our own bed with clean sheets and particularly when it’s raining outside
6. ‘Me time’ after kids & bedtime
7. Fairy lights and candles/soft lighting/natural lighting
8. Darker nights making it cosier inside, snuggling on sofa with throws & cushions
9. A real fire
10. Grandchildren over for games & cuddles
11. Partner cooking dinner
12. Pyjamas/bedtime
13. Night in DVD, family , chocolate
14. Home cooking/smell of
15. Sofa, throws, cushions, family
16. Reading in a comfortable armchair
17. Cuddling on sofa
18. Family and friends meals/relaxing
19. Pyjama TV box set ‘binge’
20. Time with pets and kids

*JYSK analysed a sample of 1,000 taken from an engagement of 30,000 around its Feel the
Happiness initiative. The sample is from across the UK’s nations and regions, collected from
followers of leading home and family bloggers.

The top 20 is such a lovely list that any of those items would make me feel happy.  It is all about comfort and feeling loved and that is what has been so great looking through the survey results, any of those items could have been number 1 and we would have all agreed.  I do agree that when the house is clean and tidy everything else seems so much better, I find it much easier to relax!

Do you agree with the results and is your item on the list?

I have just returned home from a run.  A planned 8 mile run cut short due to the heavy rain.  I can hear the rain beating down on the glass outside.  I stand in the dark hallway cold and soaked to the bone.  The door to the front room opens, my youngest daughter reaches out and asks for a hug.  Our dog jumps up excitedly to greet me.  Little Man snoring away through the baby monitor.

After a shower I return downstairs to sit on the sofa between my girls.  Snuggled together under a throw, lights low to help the girls unwind and the dog fast asleep on the rug.  We sit there together, warm and cosy, for half hour before bed.  It is so quiet I can hear the girls breathing, it is peaceful and I feel happy.

This time together is so precious, the girls at school all day and my training meaning I am spending most evenings running.  The idea behind Hygge is to forget life’s worries, to unwind and relax and to feel as at-home as possible.  Whenever I return from a run and cuddle my children this is the moment I feel as at-home as possible.  In the winter though this seems to feel even more special.  Perhaps the dark outside adds to the mood.  The warmth inside.  The soft cuddly cushions and throw on the sofa are so inviting for a cuddle when I come in from the cold.

The Danish-owned, Scandinavian global home furniture retailer JYSK are celebrating opening their 2,500th store, you can shop online and find your nearest store here, and we are going to be partnering with JYSK and their feel the Happiness Campaign.

Since the girls returned to school my weekends seem to be spent running and doing homework with the girls.  They do seem to have rather a lot, both have spellings to learn, both reading to do, writing, maths and a task to complete from this terms activity list.  I try to fit their homework into our day to day task, otherwise we would never leave the table as there is just so much of it, especially with two children!

My youngest homework for maths this week is to find numbers when doing the shopping.  I do my shopping during the week when they are at school, as taking 3 children round the supermarket is no fun at all.  I did however need to buy some new storage boxes so we headed over to the new JYSK store in Dewsbury to take a look.

My youngest found numbers everywhere, on the ceiling, on the walls and even on the floor.  She found numbers on tags, on posters and even on the watch of the store manager.  She even asked one member of staff why there are lots of '9'.  We went around the whole store and she pointed out all the different numbers that she could see.

After our number hunt, and I did get my storage boxes at a very bargain price, we headed over to Leeds for a spot of bowling at Hollywood bowl.

Before bowling we had dinner in their diner and I used this opportunity to not only spot numbers but also to do some word recognition and phonics work with her.  She spotted letters, and sounded out words on the menu 'Hot' 'Dog' 'My' 'The' 'Bun' 'and' 'in' 'on' 'of' to name a few.

After Little Man worked out that my camera had a selfie button, which he kept pressing, it was time to begin bowling.

The girls were really good at taking turns and it was not too long before my eldest began to take things really seriously.  Questioning herself on her throws and wondering why she had not knocked all the pins down.

There was a lot of score watching and discussion from both girls.  Working out how many they needed to win and who was currently in the lead.

My youngest often seeking comfort and reassurance as she watched the ball head towards the pins.

Occasionally throwing the odd Diva strop when the pins did not quite fall her way.

The girls had very different bowling styles, my youngest very delicate and taking her time.  Making sure everything was lined up and just so.

My eldest on the other hand, adopted the run very fast and throw it approach.

I did let the girls take my final turn together, they watched in anticipation to see how the pins would fall.

We had a wonderful day learning about numbers and lots of fun was had bowling too!

This day I love the day with numbers

We were invited bowling at Hollywood bowl, all words are my own opinion

As Spring approaches and the nights get lighter we are wanting to spend more time outside as a family.  Our garden is slowly becoming more of an extension to our indoor living space and with patio heaters, chimneas and fire pits even the colder English summer evenings can be warmed up.

Our focus this year is on the garden and we have drawn up some plans to transform the look and feel of it.  For Christmas the girls were given a kids picnic table and we plan on transforming a section of the garden into a herb garden.  It is here that the girls will have their picnic table ready for our garden parties.

For the adults we plan on cleaning, fixing and painting the decking and furnishing it with some new Garden furniture.  The JYSK green weekend event starts this Thursday both at JYSK stores and online at JYSK.co.uk/greenweekend and it is here that we intend to get the garden party started, as we can save up to 50% on all Garden Furniture (excludes Price Star articles).  It is the perfect opportunity to refresh our garden with new furniture.

We love the look of the best selling MIDDELFART 4-piece, rattan-effect Garden Lounge Set, it was £269.99, but is an incredible £169.99 at the green weekend.  This would give us plenty of seating options for outdoor living and a great chill out space on the decking too.

MIDDELFART

or even the JUELSMINDE garden set which was £799.99 and is now £399.99.  This would fit perfectly across the top of our decking and give a real relaxed feel.  The girls would love it too.

JUELSMINDE

As well as the furniture we can also shop for our outdoor lighting and soft furnishings to make our garden parties a real hit.  We cannot wait to start transforming the garden.  JYSK, perfect for getting your garden party started, every time.

Next week the weather is forecast to reach 33c

weather next week

Which for me means it is time to get out in the garden.

I love our garden but there is so much more I want to do with it.  To make better use of the space for the girls and to introduce more wildlife.

Last year I attended the opening of JYSK Rotherham  and recently attended the opening of their latest store in Chesterfield.  Whilst in store I was taken back by the amount of garden furniture they had.  In fact I felt it rude not to try out the chairs whilst I was there

chilling in JYSKJYSK garden furniture

After putting my feet up on the very comfy garden furniture I decided to take a quick look at the price, well I had to know.  £159.99 for a lounge set, that to me is great value.  JYSK have permanently low prices on their Price star articles and their garden furniture items currently benefit from 50% off.

Next week therefore I shall be making the most of the weather and heading to JYSK so I can spend some time relaxing in the sun in my garden.

I attended the store opening and received a goody bag to write this post.  All words are my own opinion.

The garden in high on my priority list at the moment.  I have big plans and am wanting to not only tidy up the garden but also create a few new areas.  One of which is a sensory area for the girls.  The sensory area is to be built at the side of the girls play house, an area which currently has nothing there and is looking rather untidy.

To begin with I want to create a walk way with wooden palettes and use this idea from pinterest as my guide

I would like to then plant honey suckle and other similar plants to climb up the outside of the walkway creating a beautiful array of colour.  The walkway is also intended to attract butterflies to introduce more nature into the garden.  The area at the other end will open out into a sensory garden with herbs, lavender and snap dragons.

Situated at the far end I would love to have a small bistro set like this one from JYSK

Having this bistro set would allow me to sit and watch nature pass by and create a relaxing haven for me and the girls.  I would also love to add some lights to the area and love the colours on these lanterns from JYSK

Danish-owned global furnishing store group ‘JYSK – Scandinavian Sleeping & Living’, will arrive in Chesterfield – Grand Opening Thursday 4th June – with a flourish and, to celebrate, I have an opportunity for you to win £50 to spend on some of their fabulous garden furniture in-store.

Opening celebrations will include a FREE Danish breakfast at the store from 9am on the morning of Thursday, 4th June, alongside a host of exclusive and unmissable Grand Opening Weekend offers, plus the first 50 lucky customers through the door at 9am will receive a memory foam pillow for FREE.*

*Buying customers only.
For your chance to win simply answer this question in the comments below:

What would you be likely to find in a Danish breakfast?

A: croissant
B: Danish pastry
C: boiled egg

Ts & Cs:  The prize is a £50 voucher to spend on garden furniture at JYSK’s new Chesterfield store at Markham Retail Park.  There is no cash alternative and the judge’s decision is final. Giveaway closes May 31st at Midnight GMT. UK residents over 18 years only.  Winner drawn at random from all correct entries.

Last week 20th-25th April was National stop snoring week.  A recent survey by Mattress online found that 2/3 of people suffered a bad night sleep from a partner who snored.

sleeping infographic
'A Good Night’s Sleep - An infographic by Mattress Online to promote Sleeping Well for ‘National Stop Snoring Week’. To view the full image Click Here.' This infographic has been used free of charge and I have not received any payment to use.

I myself suffer most nights from the lack of good sleep.  Part of it is snoring [not from me I might add] and the other I believe is down to our bed.  The bed I am sorry to say has seen better days and a new one was in order.

A few months ago I had attended the opening of a new JYSK store and I had seen the perfect bed

JYSK new bed

The SILKEBORG S.king oiled oak bed was perfect for us.  We are currently in the process of re designing our bed room and oak is one of our favourite woods.  The whole bed looked perfect, solid wood and a traditional yet modern look.  I was very excited for the new bed to arrive.

The bed was delivered via special delivery and came in two boxes.  Building the bed was straight forward and the new bed looks fantastic.  We just need to hurry up and save to get the rest of the room finished.

We have now had the SILKEBORG S.king oiled oak from JYSK for just over a week and I am pleased to say we have seen some improvement.  The new bed from JYSK has provided me with a good night sleep, and I am pleased to say also reduced the snoring from some one else [again not me].

March seems to be a rather marvellous month.  The weather finally is beginning to change and there is a real sense that the warm weather will be here soon.  The warmer weather brings with it the need to be outside more and a desire to de clutter and spring clean.  The first day of spring is fast upon us, and with it we see the clocks go forward an hour.

As the weather begins to become warmer and we begin the move outdoors, so to speak, we begin noticing areas of improvement that could be made outdoors.  If you are anything like me, you will have big plans for your garden but on a limited budget.

I really want to make the garden more usable through the night as well as the day, by introducing more solar lights.  I have plans to alter the layout of the garden as we have so much dead space, and add more seating areas in.  As well as this I want to create a nature area and a messy area for the girls.

I have plans this weekend to visit the Danish furniture retail group JYSK as they have prices of up to 50% off all its cool and comfortable garden furniture.  I have had a look at some of the items on offer at Green weekend  and love these solar lights for £3.99 and the furniture for £159.  Having visited the store previously I know how good quality everything is and so am keen to get the garden started.

garden furniture solar lights

We were also very recently sent a beautiful bird feeder from Find me a gift.  I would never have thought to look at Find me a gift for bird feeders and other outdoors items, but they have a huge and beautiful range.  I am going to be purchasing the hedgehog house and squirrel head feeder to add to our nature area in the garden.

Wren bird house

Our wren bird house came fully assembled and so was ready to hang in the garden straight away.  It is made from wood and to fill with seeds you simply life the roof.  It makes a welcome change from traditional feeders and adds a beautiful dimension to our nature area in the garden.  Everyone who has seen it loves it.

The outside living space is beginning to take shape nicely.

Inside the house I have been very busy tidying and listing items on eBay.  I listed 26 today, and am having a true spring clean.  The sunny weather has finally arrived, meaning I can now hang my washing out to dry and I have actually seen the bottom of the washing basket.  I am incredibly grateful for our dishwasher, as it means I do not have to spend ages washing up and can get on with playing with the girls or when they are not here tidying up.

We are hoping to have both the garden finished and the house tidied for my daughters birthday in May.  After her birthday we will then be picking a date to build a den for the charity Save the Children.  We will be tweeting our den to #denday between  29th May and 6th June as these are the dates to unleash imaginations and build the ultimate den.

With Mother's Day, St. Patrick's day, World Down Syndrome awareness day, sleep safer week, Pi day, first day of Spring and a change in clocks.  Not to mention a solar eclipse, it is no wonder March is marvellous.

I was given the opportunity recently to attend the opening of a new store, JYSK. JYSK is a Danish based furniture company who have true family values. Still family owned the company want to provide everything for the home for all budgets.

I arrived at the store and was surprised at just how much was there. They stocked everything from towels to mattresses, duvets to wardrobes. Each item has a variety of choices too, something for every budget and every taste. I was really impressed and even managed to find a mirror for the bathroom, it's only taken me two years to find an affordable silver mirror!

Whilst at the store I met the mayor of Rotherham. It was really great to have this opportunity to meet the mayor and mayoress and to chat with them about the store and about Rotherham. I cannot remember meeting the mayor before and was a little star struck at first.

JYSK often run daily deals and discounts and so it is worth keeping an eye out on their Facebook and web page as some deals only last a day. I am really pleased to have been invited to the store opening and will be visiting JYSK again.  I have not been asked to write this post, I simply wanted to document my visit to the opening.
