This day I love.......

I honestly cannot remember the last time I went to the circus. I mean I can remember going, it was the time when animals still featured heavily in the shows and of course clowns too. I can remember sitting on wooden benches in a cold tent and eating popcorn as the show unfolded in front of me. I cannot remember taking the children, and they cannot remember visiting before, which made our recent trip very exciting.

We travelled around 45 minutes to York to visit The Paulos Circus. The large pink tent was easy to spot from the A1237 and had plenty of free parking. We arrived 40 minutes before the start of the show. Having reserved our tickets in advance we were able to collect from the box office. People had already started to arrive for the next show, and were queueing to book tickets as the 4.30pm show was fully booked. I would recommend coming early for tickets but also because you choose your own seats, so arriving early gives you more seating options.

There was a real magical feeling inside the tent. Warm string lights, a soft mist on the circus floor and stars lined the sky. I was surprised at how warm it was inside and we all settled into our seats to watch the performance.

With hindsight I wish we had arrived earlier for better seats, but we were still excited and looking forward to the show. A countdown began.

The show began and I began to realise what a bad choice I had made in seats. My daughter who was sat at the side of me could see and I instead watched the show via the shadows on the tent roof and the expressions on my children. They were engrossed. They hid when the performers were performing stunts blindfolded, watching instead through the gaps in their fingers.

The show lasted for an hour and ten minutes and had no interval, but we didn't notice the time as it simply flew by. We were treated to traditional performances like juggling and knife throwing, more modern performances with lasers and of course some high flying stunts and acrobatics.

There was a buzz in the tent before the final act. The tightrope walk.

The girls watched through the gaps in their fingers again. In complete awe at the skill from each performer. I don't think they could quite believe what they were seeing.

The show came to an end, it in no way felt like over an hour had gone past and the girls would have happily sat and watched more. Little Man at 2 years old was just as captivated by what he could see, plus the show had bubbles. What 2 year old doesn't love bubbles?

No sooner had we left than the girls were asking when we could come again. I asked them their favourite parts my youngest daughter said she liked the bum wig and 'no music here' [You will have to go see the show to see what she means], my eldest said she liked the red spinning rings the best. I always have admiration for any acrobatics and stunts so personally its hard for me to pick a favourite part but I think Los Sanchez might have stole the show for me.

I only have 2 regrets, the first is we didn't get there early so we had limited choice in seating and the second is I didn't take my proper camera. I had to use my phone and whilst they are ok images I know they could be much better.

The girls would love to visit again and I would love to take them. For full details of The Paulos circus visit their Facebook page .

Our tickets were provided in exchange for this review, all words are my own personal opinion.

Taking your children on a camping holiday is an excellent experience. You get to spend time together in the great outdoors and get your kids excited about wildlife and outdoors. They are also great if you've got a tight budget but still want some time away to unwind. If you’ve never been on a camping holiday before you’re in for a real treat.

A Gazebo

No matter where you decide to take your trip you can never predict the weather. Taking a gazebo with you will ensure your family is protected from the sun’s rays and the rain and wind. Not having one with you could result in you spending the majority of your time inside your tent, which can get very hot and cramped very quickly. Kit your gazebo out with a table and chairs so you can comfortably eat meals and play board games should the weather take a turn for the worst. You can visit www.gooutdoors.co.uk  to find the right sized gazebo for your needs and requirements.

Antibacterial wipes

Children will always find a way to get messy. If your campsite does not have a sink nearby, it can be harder to keep them looking clean. While there’s not too much you can do with their clothing, you can keep their hands and face clean with some antibacterial wipes. These useful wipes will keep your family hygienically clean and are easy to use. Make sure you always use ones that are gentle on the skin but kill germs and bacteria effectively. You’ll be surprised how many you get through even during a short stay.

Pre-made food

Regardless of whether you’re staying in a local or foreign campsite, you are always going to need food. When booking your trip ask about restaurants and nearby supermarkets. If you arrive late at night or early in the morning, it’s likely you’ll want something quick without too much fuss. Cook a family favourite the night before you leave, that can be easily heated up when you arrive. Keep in Tupperware boxes and don’t forget to bring cutlery with you.

Blow-up mattress

Having a comfortable night’s sleep will make your trip far more enjoyable. The ground can be uneven and hard if you sleep without padding beneath you, and can also get cold and wet during the night. Not getting enough sleep can make everyone miserable and tired which is something you want to avoid. Having a blow-up mattress brings a more cosy feeling to the tent and improves the chances of your family sleeping straight through till morning.

Many campsites holiday suppliers such as http://www.lux-camp.co.uk/will have a recommended check list of items that might be useful for your trip. The campsites themselves may also have some camping equipment available to hire for the duration of your stay. This is ideal if you don’t fancy taking loads of items back home with you. Always research and enquire about these services and information before buying.

Plan your trip in advance so you have enough time to source these essential items. Having them packed and ready to go will guarantee a brilliant experience for all of your family.

My youngest daughter and I went to Meadowhall shopping centre and dotted around the shopping mall were lots of footprints.  Our curiosity led us to track the footprints, what could it be?

footprints in the shopping centre

We followed the footprints, they were too big to be a cat or a dog.  The wrong shape for a horse or rabbit, we kept going.  Out side the footprints led us to a big white tent, whatever the animal was it was inside the tent

The big white tent

We stepped inside the tent and were given some mouse hats.  The mouse is the scariest creature in the deep dark woods.  The tent was home to the deep dark woods, and we were going to take a stroll through the deep dark woods.

Mouse hat selfie

We [the mouse] took a stroll through the deep dark wood, a fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.  The fox came out from the deep dark wood, he sniffed us and looked, then invited us for tea, it was very kind of him but we had to follow the footprints.  An Owl and a snake invited us too but we had to know what had left these footprints.

Deeper into the dark woods we went.  Listening to stories and watching the story unfold, until out from a tree we found the answer to who had left the footprints.  He had terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws, he had knobbly knees and turned out toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose, his eyes were orange and his tongue black and there were purple prickles all over his back, oh help, oh no we found a Gruffalo!

Gruffalo experience

Out of the deep dark woods we went, happy we had found who had left those footprints around Meadowhall.

Thank you to the team at Meadowhall for giving us the first tour of the Gruffalo experience, we have not been asked to write this post.

We were invited along to an event at Dobbies in Chesterfield for Growing up Milk.  We were looking forward to some green fingered fun.  The girls had fun exploring the garden centre and learning about all the plants they could eat, even trying some tomatoes.

The girls then began to explore the colours and textures.

They even made a cheeky friend

The girls spotted a robin and went after him.  They soon stumbled upon some of the biggest leaves they had ever seen.

All this exploring in the hot sun was hungry work, so the girls settled down in the shade to enjoy a picnic.

The girls decided to explore the garden centre further and came across some lovely wooden houses which they played in, before spotting some tents.  They then became rather interested in the tents.  Even picking one out .

The girls had a wonderful time exploring the garden centre.  It was a beautiful day in beautiful surroundings

This day I love a sensory garden experience
