This day I love.......

We were sent a map for review. All words are my own honest opinion. There was no financial incentive received for this review.

One of my greatest passions is the outdoors. I absolutely love to be outside, exploring and having an adventure. When I run I take random roads and random paths just to see where they go and where I end up. My children also seem to have the same love of adventure. Getting on our bikes and seeing where we end up, although they are not such a fan when an uphill appears. The opportunity to review a map, which promises to be filled with amazing adventures and the funnest things to do was something I could not turn down.

Now that covid restrictions are starting to ease slightly and we have a little bit more freedom I think we are all ready to start exploring further afield and discover new places. I am not ready yet to travel too far afield, but I am ready to discover some new places close to home.

This new map from Marvelous maps is aimed at children and aims to spark imagination and give inspiration to any budding explorer. The map is absolutely bursting with information and had my children engaged for quite some time.

I am truly blown away by all the information on the map, yet at the same time the map doesn't feel too overloaded with information. My children absolutely love it. Trying to find things to do, looking at places they have been and planning journeys. It has sparked conversations about things they remember seeing and places they want to go. It has created a fascination with maps and map reading and looking and planning for future adventures.

The girls planned a day out after finding Nostell Priory on the map and we headed over for some Easter fun.

Children on a path

We explored the gardens and made the most of the spring sunshine, even if it was a little cold. There was an Easter egg hunt on which was great to be a part of after none happened last year. We had only planned on spending a few hours but actually spent the whole day. We had a picnic in the gardens and then spent the rest of the day playing the playground. Of course every treat day out is finished with a hot chocolate.

Boy drinking

The girls have already started planning our next adventure and I have been googling some of the places on the map to learn more about them too.

Map planning

I have created a video of our adventures which will be live soon!

If you have followed this blog for a while you will know that I like to be outdoors. I like to be active and explore and the current weather has limited my opportunities to do so. Now that Little Man is getting older he is wanting to walk more and explore more too, which often means we do not take the pushchair.

His little legs do get tired though and he does still want a rest, but the pushchair really limits as to where we can go. When the girls are at school Little Man and I often take J for an adventure and we leave the pushchair behind, in fact all we need is our Kiddy Adventure Pack.

I had a Kiddy Adventure pack with the girls and used it as part of my training for the Yorkshire 3 peaks. I even wrote a review on it. To be honest not much has changed between the style I had for the girls and the new style. There are additional features like slightly larger storage pockets, so you don't need to take an extra bag and a handy cup holder too.

The Adventure pack is comfortable to wear even when Little Man isn't in it, so I use it as a normal rucksack and then when he is tired it is quick and simple to put him in so he can rest his legs.

Just like his sister used to do Little Man plays with my hair and rubs my neck in the carrier. I also get lots of patting as he wants to point things out to me.

He loves been up high and spotting things in the distance. Talking to me and telling me all about what he can see.

We have taken the adventure pack on loads of adventures so far. Everywhere from the seaside to the forest. Unlike a pushchair we are not restricted by terrain and can explore off the beaten track.

In fact we have even been onto the 'tops' to explore.

The adventure pack lives in my car boot so that no mater where we go I always have it with us. Little Man is safe and comfortable and enjoys exploring with me.

Although sometimes on our adventures it all gets a bit too much and he falls asleep!

I cannot wait for the weather to improve so we can get out and about even more!

I was sent the adventure pack in exchange for a written post, all words are my own opinion.

Last weekend was simply amazing!

Every Saturday starts with a parkrun for me, unless it is race day and this Saturday was no different.  The girls wanted to join me in my duties as tail runner and so they came along with me.  We were greeted with gorgeous blue skies at Nostell Priory and headed for our pre race briefing.

I love running Nostell parkrun and volunteering there.  The views as you run around or walk around are just fantastic, especially with the sun shining.

My youngest really was not feeling the run, but my eldest kept zooming ahead.  There was only one way to reward all their hard work, an ice cream!

The girls went to see Grandma and I had a nice steady run to meet some friends to run with Emily and her #PeoplePowerRun challenge.  It was such a lovely afternoon run with some great company.

Sunday was race day and I awoke with aching legs, not the best start to a race.  The last time I completed Leeds 10K was in 2015 and the morning of the race I had discovered I was pregnant with Little Man.  I was excited and nervous to be doing the course again.

Leeds 10K is a fast course, mainly flat except from a lovely hill at 9km.  The roads are closed and really well marshalled and supported.  It is an out and back route starting in the city centre and running along Kirkstall road before heading back into the Headrow.

It was an incredibly hot run and I was grateful for the water stations at 4k, 7k and 8k.  The water spray and sponges also went down a treat.  I once again ran at a comfortable pace, not wanting to pass out, and my plan was to keep the 60 minute pacer behind me.  Just past the 6km mark you turn around to head back into the city and it was here I noticed the gap between me and the 60 minute pacer.  I kept up the same pace and at 8km took the first glance at my watch, 44minutes.  I worked out I could do this so began to push.

Whilst I couldn't quite manage a sprint finish I did work really hard in the final 1km and came away with my first ever sub 1 hour 10km.  A new PB of 55.57 and one which nearly a week later I am in shock over!

With a free medal engraving on offer I had to get my medal engraved before a celebratory drink!

I love the runners high it is such an immense feeling and becomes very addictive.  I could not sit still so took the girls, Little Man and J for a walk into the woods.  I had Little Man on my back so we could explore and J ran with the girls.  I loved watching them play and use their imagination.  Exactly what childhood should be about.

It was such an incredible weekend and one which is going to take some beating.  I even managed to have 3 children asleep at a reasonable time!

This day I love a weekend of running and fun

Now the weather is getting a little warmer the kids are wanting to join me more on my runs.  I love taking them with me and exploring the outdoors with them.  They love to be active and outdoors and are always looking for an adventure.  Whilst we spend all our weekends outdoors, our weekday time together is very limited as the girls are at school, so we try to make the time we do have fun.

We have started using scooters on our school run as it makes the journey to and from school much more fun.  The Y glider deluxe is a perfect scooter to introduce to the school run.  It has a unique 'lean to steer' mechanism, which helps my daughter to steer correctly.  The footplate is lovely and wide making it a perfect choice for younger riders, it gives them confidence to glide and enjoy scooting.  With size 12 feet at 4 years old, my youngest had no problems getting both feet onto the footplate and scooting to school.

The girls wear helmets when out on their scooters, and always school shoes or trainers.  We talk about busy roads and the safer places to ride scooters.

The wheels on the Yvolution Y glider deluxe helping the younger riders balance and gain confidence.  My youngest is very confident on the Y glider deluxe as the scooter seems a lot more stable than other similar scooters.

Getting outdoors now the summer is coming is a great way for kids to get active and explore.  Scooting is such a fun way to spend some time together as a family and a great way to see some of the local area.

I love that as I am running the girls can use their scooters alongside me, it means we get to see some fantastic places together.  There is a huge range of scooters and balance bikes available from Yvolution, something perfect for every child.  Why not get out and explore with your children this summer and see what treasures you can find in your local area.

The scooter mentioned was sent for review, all words are my own opinion.

Last weekend we had a very early start, but we had a very important task to do.  Our mission was to take place at Dalby trust, which is part of the Forestry commission, and our goal was to spot the Gruffalo.

The girls were armed with their scooters, ready to follow clues and see if they could spot the Gruffalo.

Prior to leaving I had downloaded a free app to help us with our Gruffalo spotting.  As we walked around the trail we had to look for footprints in the wood, as we held the app over the footprints magic would happen.

Out of nowhere the creature, whose footprints we had found, would start to appear.  The girls would watch in amazement as the animals came to life on my phone via the app, but in reality there was only their footprints in the wood.

The app allows you to take photos directly from within, so you can get your children to pose either side of the characters.  This did involve lots of instructions shouting across to my two to try and get a picture!

We had 2 creatures which had gone shy and simply would not come out to play on my phone, and a Gruffalo who was very tired and refused to stand up but non of this seemed to detract from the fun both girls were having.

As we found each of the creatures in the deep, dark wood we were given a little fact card about them and even an activity to do to be just like our found creature.

This was a nice little touch as the activity was a great way to encourage more imaginative play when out in the woods.  It also got the girls to think about each animal and how they would behave.  Once we had completed our walk around the deep dark wood, and found the Gruffalo we were awarded with an Astounding certificate!

I can see in the future this technology could be used to bring to life fairies, or other magical creatures within the woods.  Personally, getting out and about in the woods and spending all day exploring is a way to spend time as a family and to put away technology.  However given that the majority of us at some point then get out our phones to take photos whilst we are out exploring, sees this as no different to getting the phone out to make a character come to life.  Encouraging families to spend time together and explore the outside, can only be a good thing.  Plus it helps to create wonderful memories such as these

This day I love Gruffalo Spotting

At 7am on a Sunday morning I was awoken by two children requesting to ride their bikes.  Hardly focusing and struggling to wake up, I got the girls their breakfast before agreeing to take them out for the morning to ride bikes.  As my eldest is still building her confidence on two wheels I picked a local park to ride around which is nice and flat and usually quiet.  I also know it is possible to run around the lake in 15 minutes so figured it would be a nice route to ride around, and one suitable for both girls.

We started off around the lake, the girls riding through the muddy puddles and giggling as the muddy water splashed up their legs.

As they cycled around the lake they stumbled upon wooden characters from Room on the broom.  They would both drop their bikes in a very excited fashion and run over to the characters to see which one they had found.

Before quickly jumping back on their backs again to see who else they could find.

Our cycle ride took longer than originally planned, but it was a lot of fun hunting for the different characters.  The reward at the end of the ride, well to see if there is room on the broom!

Yes, there was room on the broom for two!

After a wonderful adventure it was time to ride into the sunset and head home!

This day I love is there room on the broom?

We have just returned from the most amazing week in Portugal.  Our time seemed to fly past in the blink of an eye and we have returned home to the cold weather. That is not to say it was bright blue skies all week in Portugal, far from it.  In fact we experienced more wet days than dry but that did not deter from our fun and adventures.  I am going to split our time into a few posts, the first our resort and the second our adventures.

Our stay in Portugal was in the beautiful Martinhal Quinta resort set in the Algarve and in the Quinta do Lago resort.  With only a 20 minute transfer to Faro airport this made it perfect for travelling with young children who simply wanted to stretch their legs after a 3 hour flight.

The resort consists of a collection of privately owned town house and villas.  Each one of a similar architectural style but internally displaying their own unique stamp by their owners.  The resort focuses on being family friendly, with large outdoor swimming pool, indoor heated pool, play area, toddler pool, play van and in ground trampoline.

As the taxi entered the resort we were met with an abundance of colour.  Pastel houses lined the grey cobbled streets.  Each villa and town house covered in well maintained flowers, trees and shrubs.

The resort was easy to navigate, a perimeter road linked by grey cobbled streets.  The majority of traffic, although hardly any, stuck to the main perimeter roads giving us plenty of opportunities to explore on foot.

At Martinhal Quinta resort there are 2 and 3 bedroom townhouses and 3,4,5 bedroom villas.  Each one has an outdoor pool and garden space giving plenty of room for a family to relax or play games.

We noticed that some of the villas had fences around their outdoors pools, some had fences to stop access to the front of the property from the back and others had a mixture of the two.  The villa we stayed in had neither of these facilities and I guess this is up to the private owners to install so it might be worth checking upon booking.  Reception did also state that there are BBQ available to hire, had we had better weather we would have taken advantage of this.

In addition to the gardens we also benefited from two roof terraces.  Whilst sitting in the garden you never felt overlooked and even from the roof terrace you were unable to see into a neighbouring garden, this gave reassurances as to privacy which I think is of great importance when travelling with young children.

The interior of our villa was flooded in light, it felt bright and airy.  I fell in love with the open plan concept and the high ceilings in the entrance way.  Our villa was exceptionally clean, with ladies calling every day to clean it and fitted with modern fittings.  The kitchen had all the appliances you could need and full instructions in English too.  Hair dryers were fitted into the bathrooms, of which there was one for every bedroom, and we were provided with both pool and bath towels.  In fact the only thing I really needed to pack was clothes and swimming costumes, everything else was provided.

There was a high chair for Little Man in the dining room and a travel cot in the bedroom.  Stairs were fitted with safety gates at the top and bottom, and additional baby items were available at reception if needed such as sterilisers, baby monitors and socket covers.

One of my favourite aspects of the villa was to stand on the terrace in the morning and watch the sun rise.  The warm glow of the sun on my skin was the perfect way to start the day.

Facilities on resort included a hair dressers and a small supermarket which stocked the essentials.  This included the essentials for baby too with milk and food, along with nappies and wipes.  Had I known this in advance I would have packed less food for Little Man.  There is also a larger supermarket about a 45 minute walk away from resort which stocks a lot more choice and variety should you need more than the essentials.

A large number of our days were filled with heavy rain so we made the most of the indoor heated pool.  Around the pool was plenty of seating area, for those not swimming, and for those in the pool there were inflatable toys for the children to play with.  Little Man was comfortable in the water and given it was his first time in a pool really enjoyed himself.

On sunnier days the large outdoor pool made for the perfect getaway.  Behind the slides were water fountains to play in and at the side of the large pool was a toddler pool.  Although not heated the girls would not come out of the main pool and spent their time between the two water slides and the floating bean bags.

By the side of the main pool is the entrance to kids club.  Upon arrival all three of my children were given a gift from kids club of a beach bag, hat and a toy.  We thought this a really lovely touch and it broke the ice with the children and the kids club staff.  The girls enjoyed kids club and asked to go most days, it certainly gave them plenty to do on the rainy days.  Should we have wanted to there is a baby sitting service available, but we decided not to make use of this.

Baby changing facilities are located next to kids club and before the entrance to M bar.  All other toilets, with the exception of the ones in reception, did not have changing facilities.

M bar is a great spot to grab lunch or dinner, or even an ice cream.  We often opted to sit outdoors but you could also sit inside.  The girls had plenty of choice and there were daily specials to choose from also.

M bar also provided the perfect spot to sit outside but with cover to watch the spectacular rain and it was amazing to watch.

Above M bar is the exquisite setting for breakfast.  There was the option to sit outside but we sat inside in case of rain.  The girls loved chilling in the sofas after breakfast and watching people go past outside and watching them play golf.

Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice.  Pancakes, pastries, toast [with a large bread selection], meats, cheeses, fruit, cereals, hot food and an egg station.  The girls were spoilt for choice and I have never seen them eat so much.  Most days we arrived at 8 and left around 10.30!

The view from breakfast was always breath taking especially when the rain was about to start.  The clouds added a real feel to the scenery giving it an extra dimension

Underneath M bar is the heated pool and the blue room.  The blue room was the perfect escape, computer consoles and games filled the room which was sure to keep anyone entertained.  We would come here after breakfast to let the girls breakfast settle before the day ahead.  It was also the perfect retreat when the rain started.

Near the outdoor pool is the Mvan which inside has been transformed into a chill out area for children.  Comfy cushions and chairs made it the perfect place to watch the world go by, or if you preferred the driver seat to let your imagination take you any where you wanted.

Quinta do Lago is made up of a variety of hotels and any guest within this area can use another hotels facilities at a discounted rate.  Great for golfers as they can access the different golf courses, and great for families who can explore additional facilities.  At the top end of Quinta do Lago is the supermarket and a shopping area and at the far end is the beach.  Both within walking distance.  In addition there are a variety of sports facilities from tennis courts to sailing and a wide choice of restaurants.

The beach is 2km from Martinhal resort and whilst there is a regular shuttle bus from reception we chose to walk and it was a really easy walk.  The beach itself is accessed via a long bridge and situated on the other side of a large sand bank.  Worth noting that this is the only entry and exit point to the beach.  We were greeted with long golden sand and blue sea with white rolling waves.  Not a beach I would let the children swim in but one I was happy to have a paddle in with them.  The sand was incredibly clean and the girls had plenty of space to run around and explore.

Martinhal Quinta resort is perfect for families and especially those with young children.  Everything you need is accessible and there is plenty to keep the children occupied, whatever the weather.  We had no need to hire a car as we chose to walk everywhere.  Should you wish to explore further afield it is possible to hire a car from reception or use their private car service and they can even provide car seats.  Little touches such as separate pool and bath towels, or even providing stair gates and high chairs help to take away some of the stresses when travelling with children.  When both your children refuse to get in the taxi to go back to the airport and said they had the best time ever, you know that there is something special about Martinhal Quinta.
