This day I love.......

The cold weather seems to be on its way.  The school routine is back in full force and the dark nights seem to be slowly creeping earlier and earlier.  Reflective gear is now a requirement for running and the girls are wrapping up in more and more layers for school.

It feels like the Summer holidays were a life time ago, yet in reality the girls have been back at school for 3 weeks.  Those new uniforms I bought at the start of term are well and truly worn, the shoes are looking less shiny and homework is once again a normal part of our weekend.  Our weekends taken up with making the most of our time together and walking the dog.

Looking back over the summer holidays we filled it with so much fun.  Weekend trips to the seaside and long road trips to Scotland and to Brighton too.  A summer full of adventure, my youngest learning to ride a bike and Little Man growing in confidence.

As we settle back into the school routine the girls have been eased in gently with some reading from Maverick.  Maverick have sent us two new titles:

Hamster Sitter Wanted - Tracy Gunaratnam and illustrated by Hannah Marks
Clumpety Bump - Phil Allcock and illustrated by Richard Watson

Hamster sitter wanted has become Little Mans book of choice recently.  I am not sure if it is the fantastic details in the illustrations or the humorous prose he likes, but either way he has a liking for this book.  I rather like the adventures Marco and Polo, clever names for 2 adventurers, get up to.  The question is can they find the perfect hamster sitter for their cousins?  Will it be a giraffe who practises Yoga? or a Sheep that knits? You will have to read the book and find out!

A book which has a character by the name of Wally Wobblebottom is certain to have both girls laughing out loud each time the book is read.  It never fails to make them giggle.  I tend not to read the story for bedtime as they do find it rather amusing.  My youngest is very similar to Clumpety Bump too, she loves to make people happy and she loves her food!  A book we can certainly relate to.

We now begin to look forward to Autumn.  The school routine well and truly in place.  Leaves will soon be lining the walk to school and the girls will soon be filling their pockets with conkers.  Whilst we certainly had a wonderful summer, it is also great to get back into a routine and hopefully I can tidy the house before half term!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently but this week has been rather a strange one.  Apart from Monday I have had every day in either the Dr or hospital with various blood tests, physio appointments, vaccinations and allergic reactions.  It has been one of those weeks that once I pick my youngest up from school all we both want to do is chill and watch TV.  I am also guessing that 5 posts about how I love to spend time with my youngest and just chill, and am so grateful that, at 3 years old, she has such a caring and understanding personality, would probably get a little repetitive.  I will save the details for the hospital appointments for my pregnancy round up this week and instead continue with the rest of the week.

me and the youngest

After the girls were finally allowed to open up the box, Laa Laa seems to now accompany my youngest everywhere.  My youngest and I are enjoying our time together before we pick up her sister from school, but I do wish I could do more with her without so much pain.  It won't be long now before her younger sibling makes an appearance and we are making the most of our time together.

I have spent my mornings finishing off the nursery for Thing 3 and am so pleased with the final outcome.  I am just in love with the room and cannot wait for Thing 3 to arrive.  It feels as if a huge wait has been lifted now the room is complete.  There are of course a few bits and pieces that could make the room even better but these can be done once baby arrives.

After a few weeks away I finally felt well enough to volunteer at parkrun again.  I have really missed it and it was good to be back.  My eldest came with me to help and we had the important task of collecting the finish tokens.

parkrun, the tokens, the bump and the eldest

I do feel this week has gone rather quickly, perhaps it is with keeping busy in the nursery.  The girls seem to be settling back into a routine this week, which is always good.  Am just hoping they let me have a bit of a lie in in the morning!

Bed time in our house has always been stressful, always been a battle and the girls fight until gone midnight every night.  It has been the same for almost 5 years.  We do have a routine and we had tried every recommendation but nothing worked.  Nothing could break the screaming and the tantrum or the general messing around.

This week something has changed and I know that by writing this post that I will jinx it but oh well.  Since returning from Britmums the girls are going to sleep in their own beds without me sitting in their rooms with them.  That is a huge achievment.  My eldest seems more content that I am not with her sister first, as she usually does less messing and falls to sleep quicker, and so goes to sleep.  I am not saying there is no playing up, of course there is they are children after all, but the playing around is minimal and for the past few nights I have had both girls asleep within an hour of them getting into bed.

I haven't really done anything different same routine and same bed time.  The thing that changed is the night I returned from Britmums my youngest said she was tired and wanted to go to bed.  I put her in bed gave her a kiss and said night and that was it.  My eldest played up quite a bit that night to the point where I took to twitter to say stop now enough.  It was the only place for me to scream [I know online and it doesn't really count].  After that though they both seem to be getting used to me not sitting with them.

It hasn't been easy for me, I miss their cuddles and I miss stroking their hair as they fall asleep.  It serves as another reminder that they are growing up far too quickly.  On the flip side, bedtime is much more peaceful and a lot less stressful.

I hope bedtime continues to be as peaceful.

This day I love bed time battle be gone

Before having children I never struggled with sleep.  I would have the occasional night where I found it hard to drift off, but these were few and far between.  I also have the ability to sleep anywhere, including trains.  At one point I was so tired I even slept through and missed an entire day.  Long gone are the days were I get a lie in and my children seem to be the exact opposite for me with sleep.

Both my girls are a nightmare to get to go to sleep at night.  During our holiday to Portugal I was informed by one of the locals that Portuguese and European children go to bed at the same time as their parents.  I came to the conclusion my kids must be European, as it is the only way I can think of to explain their inability to sleep.  They wake up between 6 and 7 most mornings so am lucky if I manage a lie in in the morning.

I have followed lots of tips to try and help the girls sleep:

- routine
- No TV/tablets at least an hour before bed
- They have no toys in their rooms so that their bedrooms are only for sleeping in, not playing
- Jigsaw/wind down before bed
- No naps in the daytime [not that they would if I tried]
- Tiring them out during the day

Nothing however seems to work, they don't seem at all tired during the day so they must be getting the right amount of sleep for them.

When the girls do finally fall asleep I have a couple of things I like to do to aid me get a good nights sleep.  The first is I turn my phone face down so that the flashing light doesn't show.  I have noticed this helps me get a deeper sleep as I am not constantly woken up by the light.  The other is to be woken up in the morning by day light gradually rather than a harsh alarm noise.

As a working full time Mum to two girls it is important that the girls are in a set routine, else I would never leave the house in time for work.  This been said I am not one that believes that everything has to be done at set times. more in a set order.

For example:

Wake up, Breakfast, brush teeth and washed, dressed, hair done, check bag, leave house

A very simple routine but the girls know exactly  what to expect and when to expect it.  This means they are ready and we can go.  Routines don't have to be rigid, such as you must be asleep by 7pm.  Let's face it we all feel tired at different times on different days, so bedtime is between 6-8, dependant on how tired my girls are.  Same with eating, lunch is between 11-1 not at 12 every day, its not practical for us and my girls are not always hungry at 12 sometimes they are hungry before and sometimes a little later.  This way reduces stress but still keeps the importance of a routine.  I totally agree routines are important for the health and well being of children, they know whats coming they understand what to do and it helps them learn.

This flexibility allows us to have more fun, I feel anyway, as I am not constantly stressing about what time it is or what we are going to do next.  It works for us.  Every day my children see new adventures and challenges as they grow up into beautiful girls.  My eldest will soon be moving into pre school, which is a big challenge and new adventure for her and my youngest is learning to brush her teeth.

Dora the Explorer from Nick Jr, have a range of down loadable step by step guides which are fun for children and helps to guide them on their own adventure.  Here is the brushing teeth one.  My girls love to learn and have a great sense of achievement when they do something themselves.  Dora can be there with my girls to guide them as they learn.

My eldest also loves to record how quick she is growing and is taking great pride in measuring herself with the Dora the Explorer height chart.  With its soft foam back and fun magnets and stickers my eldest loves to measure things, including me

so big

So if its learning to ride a bike

riding a bike

Learning to brush your teeth

brushing teeth

Baking for the first time

Learning to bake

Or simply one of life's little adventure

off on an adventure

A good routine and the helpful guides from Dora the Explorer can help you on your way.

The girls were very kindly sent a Dora the Explorer wall chart to review, all words and opinions are my own.

With the girls poorly the past few weeks our normal routine went out of the window.  I don't have a routine in the sense of at 11 am we do this and at 3 pm this happens but we do have a structured day or routine.  Once a week the girls go swimming, I try to do an activity with them everyday.  Today we had swimming lessons to catch up from the 3 each girl missed when poorly.

I took my youngest in the pool first for her 30 minute lesson.  As its a pool we tend to use for catch up classes my youngest has never swam in it before.  She was a bit taken by the size of the pool and kept looking round, not really paying very much attention.  She normally splashes and kicks her legs, today she was too busy looking at everything.

My eldest has used this pool before.  She really enjoyed her lesson and has now taken to standing up and jumping in.  Her aim is to make the biggest splash possible in order to get Mummy as soaked as possible.  She absolutely loved it today and we had plenty of giggles.

lets go swimming

After swimming I took the girls out for lunch, followed by a quick trip round the supermarket.  Having run out of bread, milk, rice and most fruit and vegetables a food shop was definitely in order.  My youngest decided to test out two new things.  The first is to grab anything she can reach, including members of the public and their shopping, and put them into my trolley.  Rather amusing the first few times.  The second thing she wanted to test was to take out any item in the trolley she could reach and either eat it and if not edible throw it.  I can see future shopping trips taking even longer.

This day I love swimming and shopping
