This day I love.......: Schleich

My youngest daughter loves glitter, mermaids, role plays, unicorns and dolls. She fits the stereotypical girl model although she does also have a side to her that loves getting muddy too. Her 6th birthday is fast approaching and in all honesty I have struggled with what to get for her.

You see, because she loves all those things she has several dolls which she plays with every day. She feeds them, changes them, and looks after them as if they were real. We have almost been late to school on several occasions because she had to get her baby to sleep. What she doesn't have is a unicorn, although I am not sure if I can find one of those and a mermaid.

Well, she didn't have a mermaid until I had an email from Schelich. They have released a new range, new Bayala Mermaid figurines. Having had Schelich figures in the past I was keen to see the new mermaid range and responded to say I would be delighted to receive one.

There are three new mermaids joining the collection from February and these figurines come with a magical shell case. The case makes it perfect for transporting and collecting all the mermaids. The case is decorated with sparkle and glitter. In different lights the glitter appears different colours making it rather magical. There is no clasp to hold it closed, which makes it perfect for a 5 year old to open without help.

Inside the shell is the mermaid and her turtle. The turtle can be removed from the mermaids hand if you wish. In addition to the mermaid and turtle, the mermaid also comes with some accessories that can be stored inside the shell.

The mermaid has glitter both in her hair and on her tail. The sparkles shimmer in the light giving a magical feel to her. The details are the outstanding quality you would expect from Schelich. I love the soft colours of the mermaid which I think add a real magical touch. One of the great features about this particular figure is the move ability of her arm.

The mermaid is the perfect size for a 5 year old to hold and play with, I would supervise any children younger than this as the accessories are small. I cannot wait to watch my daughter's imagination unfold as she plays with the mermaid. I also cannot wait to see her face when she unwraps this on her birthday. As a child who loves mermaids and sparkles this is going to be perfect for her.

The girls love imaginative play. They love their Schleich figures and creating adventures. Recently the girls were sent the Croco jungle research station by Schleich, and they were keen to create an adventure. First though we had to build the station.

The Croco Jungle Research station took around 15 minutes to build but the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Each piece was easy to fit together and nothing was too fiddly, in fact it was actually simple to build. The girls helped, assembling trap doors and filling chests with gold coins. As you would expect with Schleich everything is of exceptional build quality and could withstand a 5 year old attempting to fit pieces together.

The croco jungle research station is quite large when built and does take up most of my coffee table, the advantage is though that there is plenty of room to play. The girls started making up their own individual stories whilst intertwining with each others imagination. My youngest got the vet van and brought it over to the research station to aid her sister who had captured a crocodile!

The quality and detail on each piece is simply amazing, and I think it is down to the amount of detail that sparks such creativity. The animals look realistic, even Little Man has begun to recognise animals from his Schleich animals. There is so much care to attention to detail, photos cannot do each piece justice.

The Croco jungle research station as 3 areas that can be played with independently or together. The crocodile rock has an upper jaw that can be opened, closed or removed. Inside the jaw is a hiding place in one of the teeth. The back of the skull can also be removed to reveal a hidden treasure chamber. The Crocodile rock can then be clipped to the viewing platform. In doing so the secret trapdoor leads into the treasure chamber. This is then linked to the house. A ranger and scientific equipment come with the set, along with 4 animals, and the girls use the house as the rangers house. The third piece is a pen. The girls open the pen up and use to capture crocodiles. The pen can be placed near the house or further away.

There are so many ways that the Croco jungle research station can be played with. The girls can play their own games but still interact with each other. Little Man is often given an animal to play with. It is rare that you can find something that can entertain 3 children of such varying ages. The Croco jungle research station would make a perfect gift.

Little Man has started making progress with his speech. First he was more interested in developing his climbing skills but now communication seems to be his main priority. It is lovely listening to him babble and make sounds, and more so that he now says Mummy. We play daily with our Schleich animals as a way for Little Man to learn to recognise both animals and their sounds. We take some animals in the bath too, one of the great things about Scheich is they can be used anywhere.

Using our Farm animals Little Man has been listening to me make random farm animals noises, particularly cows, as we have a herd and he likes to check that each one makes the same noise. Which probably explains his love for cows. His first animal noise was to moo and point at the cows in the field. I know that our creative play with our Schleich animals is working for his animal recognition.

His farm has got even better lately with the addition of a Tractor with trailer. I must first point out that the recommended age is over 3, but Little Man is stubborn and so I supervise his play. As you would expect from Schleich the quality is absolutely fantastic and certainly built to last. Even with Little Man pulling and pushing on the tractor.

The large, chunky, grooved wheels are a real source of entertainment for him. He hits and spins them, his fingers the right size.

The door open and shut with ease, and Little Man can put the farmer inside ready to drive the tractor. Little Man then peers into the tractor and waves at the farmer, The transparent, break-resistant plastic is perfect for Little Man and his sometimes rather clumsy toddler fingers, he can see the farmer and easily open and close the doors to play. Little Man has also spotted himself in the mirrors a few times too when he peers into the tractor!

Little Man also loves the moving front loader. Perfect for picking up some of the farm animals or pretending to dig in the farm.

Sometimes Little Man has more animals to transport and the trailer comes in very handy for this. All four sides can be put down or one at a time, meaning we can pretend to load in the animals for movement around our farm.

The trailer adds onto the tractor to allow it to be transported around the farm. Little Man makes 'Brum Brum' noises as he moves the tractor and trailer around the farm yard.

Little Man loves his tractor and trailer and it has made a great addition to his farm yard. He also has grown attached to 'moo' as he is called, as I often find him in his hand walking around the house.

Ever since my youngest daughter could answer the question 'What do you want to do when you are older?' her answer has been make animals better or look after animals or care for animals. Either way the profession is a vet, or something very similar. She is an incredibly imaginative child and loves role play and make pretend games.

The Schleich Mobile Vet Van, which is part of the Schleich horse club range, is a well matched toy for my youngest daughter. Suitable from age 5 to around 12 years old and with my youngest daughter 5 years old she absolutely loved it.

First the Schleich Mobile Vet Van comes with both a vet, who has bendable legs so can sit and drive the vet van, and a foal. The van has safe clear plastic so you can see the vet in the van, and both doors can be opened. The foal is hand painted and contains some beautiful detail. Everything fits inside the mobile vet van so it can all be taken with you as you drive around the countryside.

The vet van has an X-Ray machine for performing those all important assessments and of course a laptop to be able to see the results. Along with medicines, food and a box to keep them all within. The mobile vet van is perfect for any child who loves imaginative play.

There is some small assembly needed with the mobile vet van but the majority of this is sticking on the stickers. My 5 year old and 7 year old helped to build the van and it took no time at all. Some of the pieces, in particular the medicine bottle, are very very small and I have had to make sure my 1 year old does not get hold of them. However, the box clearly states this is intended for play for the over 5s. Without these small pieces my 1 year old does like to play with the van and the horse and vet, but we take out the other items before he plays.

The mobile vet van is well constructed and sturdy enough to support the play of all 3 of my children. Even with what appears to be some very rough imaginative roads the van has not lost any paint or chipped which is a good sign.

Overall my youngest daughter loves the Schleich mobile vet van. Both well built and lovely colours it appeals to her creative and imaginative side and she has so far come up with some amazing adventures and journeys. The vet van has been combined in play with our other Schleich products to create an even bigger adventure!

My children learn best through play. I personally feel that when learning is fun that children will often learn more as they become engrossed in what they are doing. Not only this but they also remember what they did.

‘Educational Play the Schleich Way’ is a new initiative from Schleich. Schleich have created a 16 page brochure to accompany the campaign and within it is a wealth of ideas. The guide begins by discussing the different roles within a balanced play diet. This was something I had never thought of before, but it makes perfect sense. Giving children a mixture of active, social, Creative and free play. Another important point the guide makes it to be there for your child and to play with them. I think we all get busy sometimes and it is important to make time to play.

The guide also explores other issues such as sharing. With each one it gives ideas of how to help and makes suggestions of how to use some of the Schleich range. I felt it very important that the guide states not to gender stereotype toys because every child is different.

My youngest is learning about size at school and so we used our Schleich toys to extend this learning at home. First we lined our toys up with the biggest ears, then by size and finally feet.

When we had collected her sister from school the girls played together in the garden with the Schleich animals. My youngest showed her sister which was the biggest and which had the biggest ears, reciting everything we had talked about earlier. The girls then began to bath the animals before taking them down to the grass for some food. They each took it in turns to look after each animal and it was simply lovely listening to their story unfold as they played together.

Schleich toys have been a success with the girls. They love how detailed each one is, so things like sorting is made easy. The details also spark conversations as they discuss which has more black on it, the zebra or the cow?. They also love that they can play with them in water as well as out of the water, without damaging them!
