This day I love.......

This year I have been trying to make more of a conscious effort to shop more ethically, or at the very least be more ethically aware. Making little swaps, like buying vegetables not wrapped in plastic, to slightly bigger swaps, using quorn or meat substitutes at home instead of meat. In addition we are trying to reduce waste, by using our compost bin more and grow some of our own vegetables. We have partnered with Suttons, online gardening retailers and advocates of grow your own vegetables, to look at some of the other trends in food and drink this year

Guilt-free alcohol

Alcohol often crops up now and then in our diets, for some more than others. However, we are becoming more health conscious and calorie counting doesn’t go well with a taste for liquor…
But, not to worry, guilt-free drinking is on its way. This new trend allows us to drink and be sociable without consuming extra calories. The low-calorie option amongst alcoholic drinks has been a rising segment for many years and will continue to grow as we increasingly monitor what we eat and drink.

It's already popping up here and there. You might have seen low-calorie beer on the shelves for example. Now, 78% of bars offer cocktails which is up 12% on 2016 — driven by social media and people’s willingness to post photos of their fancy drinks. Zach Sasser, a head bartender, predicts that ingredients such as beetroot juice, kale and pureed carrots will be popular. “Going into this health-conscious age that we live in, I believe integration is inevitable,” he says.

We might see healthier additions included in our cocktails too. In one survey conducted by the National Restaurant Association, 700 chefs were surveyed on what they think the latest culinary trends may be. They said that the relationship between the bar and the kitchen is to become stronger. Can we expect vegetable-infused cocktails in 2018?

Make room for more mushrooms

Scientists have discovered that mushrooms are better for us than we once thought, and it’s down to our ‘adaptogenic’ compounds. These compounds have anti-stress and anti-cancer properties. In fact, Food Navigator found that year-on-year sales of food products that include medicinal mushrooms have risen between an outstanding 200-800%, depending on the variety.

Experts are predicting that the mushroom market will be worth over £37 million in six years. Making its way into the food and drink sector through mushroom-infused coffees and mushroom smoothies, many cafes and retailers are already profiting from the trend.

The use of the mushroom is not limited to foodstuffs either. We can expect to see the ingredient on the labels of our hair and beauty products too. Different species of mushrooms are chosen for their varying properties — for example shiitake mushrooms are known for their richness in antioxidants and high vitamin D content, and the reishi mushroom is selected for its anti-inflammatory properties.

More non-meat eaters

More people are removing meat from their diet in a bid to help the environment. In fact, the number of vegans in the UK has risen by 350% in the past decade — predominantly driven by the younger market, with half of those opting for this diet falling between the ages of 15 and 34. At home we have been adopting a flexitarian diet — primarily vegetarian with meat and fish occasionally.

It’s possible that more plant-based ‘meats’ will be available to us. An example of this is an innovation called Beyond Meat. This could come in the form of burgers or fried food. Expect to see other indulgent food too, such as extravagant vegan desserts.

Smoothies and plant-based workout fuel

Smoothies were big in 2017, you might’ve noticed an abundance of them on social media. Finely ground tea leaves, matcha and powdered super vegetables such as kale, spirulina and spinach have been popular too — their texture making it easy to add to soups, smoothies and salads. Registered dietician, Abbey Sharpe, explains their popularity: “I think people love a quick way to get in their healthy-eating fix, and powdered substances are seen as an easy way to pack in the nutrition.”

As part of the new craze, it’s likely that we’ll see more plant-based proteins. One of the newest forms of this is pea protein which has many benefits including its neutral taste — making it favourable for regular consumption.

Taking to the gardens

One prediction for this year’s food trends is more people growing their own produce. Brexit is already changing our views on food shopping. In April 2017, one in five said that they were more likely to buy British food after leaving the EU to support the economy. However, this was dependent on pricing, and if prices rise, many will go for cheaper alternatives.

In 2016, we witnessed first-hand the implications of relying on imports. Vegetable prices rose by 6.6% and this was explained by climate problems in Europe which led to shortages in some items. Can we risk facing these soaring prices again? Many think not. Instead, keen and amateur gardeners are heading to their back yards to plant their own vegetable plants and seeds and it’s expected that this trend will continue.

What are your predictions for healthy food trends in 2018?

The Easter holidays have arrived and I am very much looking forward to getting out and about with the girls and baby.  We have lots of activities planned and my Mum has even offered to have the girls for a day out.

The girls have been trying some new products to help with our trips out over Easter. The Sneck is a travel pillow which attaches to the headrest using Velcro.  It is incredibly soft as it is filled with microbeads and it provides a great place for a child to rest their head without getting in the way of the seat belt or harness.  The girls also love the pocket so they can stash treats inside.  It is really easy and simple to use and gives the girls that extra comfort if they need it.  I can also see it to be useful on the plane when we go on holiday next year.

The Junkie has been a life saver and absolutely amazing. It has two cup holders, retractable trays, a 'tech mount' and a place to organise everything you need in the car.

The tech mount has been fantastic as it means we only need to take one tablet with us and the girls can share and watch the same film.  We fill the removable tote bag with things the girls need before a journey and then fasten the Junkie into the middle seat using the seat belt.  The Junkie really becomes useful after a journey as well as all the items the girls have used or their rubbish can be taken straight out the car.  We simply love how everything is easy to reach and kept tidy and that it contains everything the girls need for a journey.

The girls have also been trying the award winning BubbleBum.  BubbleBum is an inflatable car seat.  It takes less than 20 seconds to inflate by mouth and conforms to all EU and US regulations.  The BubbleBum has proved really useful recently as my Mum had to pick my eldest from school when I was in labour with baby.  My eldest had the BubbleBum in her school bag just in case.  It meant that should I not be able to get her from school she would be able to get in the car with my Mum or her friend and be safe.  It is designed for ages 4-11 so is ideal for my eldest.  It is perfect for those emergency situations or even for travel in taxis or abroad.

Both of my girls take part in lots of after school clubs, which can often mean rushing from one place to another after school.  Some days we often do not get time for dinner before the club starts and so the girls have a snack on the way there.  Snackeez is a great solution that provides drink and snack in one handy container.

The Snackeez cup holds around 450ml of cold drink, it is not suitable for hot liquids.  When filling it is important to leave enough room to screw the snack bowl on top.  We have found this is to around the same level as the plastic grip.  The snack cup can then be screwed securely on top and filled with a snack of your choice.

The cup so far has not spilt even when knocked over, provided the snack pot is screwed in tightly.  Although I would not want to test this by tipping completely upside down.  The cup is light weight, and although on the large side is great for my 5 year old.  There is a rubber grip running around Snackeez making it easy to hold.

We have used the snack pot on its own without the cup and is a great storage container to take out if you wanted to use without the cup.  However for us it is fantastic.  My eldest absolutely loves it and it accompanies her to all her after school clubs.  Even better for me it is dishwasher safe [top rack only], meaning it is easy to clean ready for the next day.

There is plenty of room for her snacks and she has plenty to drink at after school club too!  I am actually slightly jealous of the snackeez and would love one for myself.  I may wait until Autumn when licensed Snackeez will arrive with Frozen, Shopkins and Star Wars available for kids (and big kids) to collect [I want a Star Wars one!].

I think the Snackeez will also be great in the summer for picnics and day trips.

What would you put in your Snackeez?  My daughters favourite is chocolate buttons in the snack pot and Mango juice in the cup.  Why not tell Snackeez_UK on both Twitter and Facebook What's in Yours?

We were sent a Snackeez for review, all words are my own opinion

We have been fans of Shloer for quite some time.  I was first introduced to Shloer when I launched it in Asda stores.  I worked as one of those people who ask members of the public to try new products.  I really enjoyed my job and in particular the Shloer campaign really stood out for me.  Shloer have launched two new products.

The first we tried is the new strawberry punch flavour.  The Shloer strawberry punch for me is the perfect summer drink, fruity, refreshing and perfect for those summer BBQ.  Shloer gives those who cannot drink alcohol an alternative or for those who simply enjoy sparking juice.

Shloer have also launched a Shloer light range, in two flavours white grape or red grape.  We tried the white grape and to put it to the test did a blind taste test

Shloer Light uses stevia leaf extract which means it has less calories than traditional Shloer, but as the girls can tell you it tastes no different.

Why not treat yourself this summer to one of the new Shloer range?

We were sent a bottle of Shloer for the purpose of this review, all words are my own personal opinion.

The first week of the school holidays is over, only 5 more to go.  Not that I am counting down or anything.  My health and fitness has gone out of the window this week, the girls have come first and I have done my best to keep them busy.  I have discovered that tomorrow it is parents day in America and I have decided to adopt this as an excuse to treat myself for a busy week and a successful first week of the school holidays.

I have planned to go for a run tomorrow morning and am really looking forward to it.  I have missed running this week and tomorrow is much needed.  I haven't planned anything else for tomorrow and am looking forward to a nice quiet day at home.

My husband will be spending the day with the girls and he has planned to enjoy some of his favourite Beanies coffee.

Beanies Coffee flavours

I have an allergy to caffeine so haven't drunk them myself but my husband loves them.  Vanilla and Orange are his favourite favours.  There are only 2 calories a cup so are a guilt free treat for him and a treat that he says has a pleasant taste and aroma.  I can smell vanilla, orange and hazelnut when he makes them.

How are you planning on rewarding yourself for surviving the first week of the school holidays and for Parents day?

This is a collaborative post

At the moment I am trying my best to reduce the amount of sugar in my diet.  It is not easy as I have a huge sweet tooth.  One of the changes I have made is from juice to water, problem is I am bored of drinking water.

Not sure if it is just me but there is only so much water I can drink before I get fed up with drinking it and want something else.  It is at this point I usually add the dilute.  The girls also drink a large amount and so I wanted an alternative for them, as well as myself.

stur flavour options

Stur provided me with such an alternative.  Stur is gluten and wheat free and according to Stur:

An innovative and great tasting range made solely with natural fruit flavours and lightly sweetened with the highest quality, natural stevia leaf extract. Containing zero fat, calories and sugar and 100% of RDA of Vitamin C in every squeeze, Stur not only gives you a metabolism boost, but can help combat tiredness and fatigue'

Stur is perfect for a low calorie diet and can be added to yoghurt, smoothies as well as water.  Each stur can make up 30 servings which is 6 litres of water.

Stur blackcurrant

Stur has proved to be popular with the girls who haven't noticed the swap from their regular dilute pop.  Stur has really given me a new love for water and given water a much better taste

All words are my own opinion.  I was provided with Stur samples.
